I've got to dump my autism on this because it's going to bother me and I need to get homework done and I can't think about it until I get this shit off my chest.
What the fuck is going on with the world design? It's pretty heavily documented how inspired they were by a tour of Europe when designing DD1, pretty sure Suzuki quoted Britain specifically as a direct inspiration as late as the 10th Anniversary video. It's been bothering me ever since we've known there was a desert area, I've got no clue where they are trying to place this shit. The armor is largely the same so far, and that was always very Greco-Roman, which I don't think is supposed to clue us in on anything other than the character designer is aware of how those two societies affected the Middle Ages. The massive aqueduct-looking structures around that are crumbling denote a place formerly under the control of the Roman empire, but the heightmap is all wrong to be a place in northern Europe. Can't be Germany, either, Vermund(?) is too close to the coast and the mountains are much too small to be the Alps. The name "Vermund" is pointing to the gap between Denmark and the Netherlands, but the foliage is all off, and there's no deserts up there at all. Those areas are also quite flat.
So we have to move south, but we aren't going into Spain or Italy, the architecture is all wrong. And Spain is the only one with proximity to a desert in that part of Europe. It was at this point that I noticed the pines, which are strangely pretty rare in Europe, and are really only native to the depicted areas on that map there, which again puts us in Spain, but again the architecture is all wrong. Overlaying it with a height map, our only other options are fucking Bulgaria, Turkey, and Greece, all of which don't really qualify but are at least closer to a fucking desert than northern Germany.
