Dude the Lyra starter game is a fucking mess. Why do people say act like its the holy grail of starter projects? Its just layer after layer after layer of unnecessary abstraction. I hate it!
The Multiplayer Shooter project in Unreal 4 was way easier to poke around and learn from and that was in pure fucking C++.

Its da "industry standard" that's why. For small indies that's kind of useless. All the abstraction is probably because its difficult to work with blueprints in teams because you can't merge a blueprint so functionality is split up between multiple classes.

Does anyone know how well Godot handles high-resolution 2D assets? I want to make something like The Vagrant or Astlibra, but I'm unsure of whether to use Godot or Unity.

dude your character is clearly rotating towards the camera.basis.z while/inbetween attacking, look at the floor
where in god hand movement is baked into some attacks but it will always be back/forward
there's definitely no rotation between punches in god hand

More development than I was expecting, considering their minuscule momentum and that presumably none of them are paid.
I wonder if they have any plans for funding. Competing with Unity, Godot and Unreal is going to be tough.

I think the issue is I'm way more excited for my game than other people seem to be, so they don't really care about my progress. Yeah it took like 4 hours to add, capture then edit, but to the average person it's nothing.

If I was the Redot dev I'd look at what Godot is lacking, add that, and announce it.
Like if Redot made a full implementation of Compositor shaders (AKA real big boy shaders, not the garbage method Godot currently uses which is placing a quadmesh in front of the camera) then Redot would unironically look very competitive.
It's not hard to find Godot's faults, what's hard is implementing that shit

I lurked the redot discord when I thought there was a chance they might do that but they're retards. The "founders" are so non-technical it's laughable, they have no idea about the basics of the engine or software dev in general. By the time I left they'd cycled through about 3 different sets of codemonkeys, who all quit as soon as they realised the whole thing was pointless and directionless.

You're also out of date on the shader stuff, 4.3/4.4 added rendering pipeline hooks. Look into that.

Encapsulation is the default, but it's trivially easy to globalize things. Godot has autoloads and groups for that. I just saw my first Chinese indie dev game on the TL. These guys are insanely talented, it was only a matter of time.

When I was researching vfx, I came across Chinese demo reels on yt. After reading the translated comments, I found that one of the channels recommended cgjoy.com . The homepage has newbs posting their portfolios for jobs. CGJoy classroom (pic rel) has the course catalogue. The "game effects" section, their term for vfx, has multiple doublecats level vfx tutorials with regular instructor feedback, and it's really cheap (maybe not as cheap for them). The instructors stick around after the course and help students on their first few original projects. The only comprehensive vfx tutorial English speakers have for Unity is Gabriel Aguiar's Udemy courses, and it doesn't even come close. Colosso has some, but it's not comprehensive because they focus on unreal.

For stylized environment art, we have stylized station courses, which teach you to make underoptimized assets that are barely okay for gamedev. The Chinese have modeng, they might have better instructors on their internet, but modeng is the only one who translated his course and put it on artstation.

Colosso is the only platform that has this level of quality by having professionals explain their workflow. Their game animation course was made by Riot Games' principal animator.

We might have the best colleges or game studios that teach newcomers their craft, but that knowledge doesn’t really get shared with the average game developer. I’m sure all this information is scattered across various channels and blogs, but newbies have to struggle to find it because it’s not compiled in one place. The Koreans put their stuff on the open internet and translate it, but the Chinese post on their own internet, and our torrenters don’t even bother with it because it’s in Chinese. It's useless to us without translation.

I made this animation back in 23 when I was studying elemental magic.

It's not that dificult if you draw the reference first in a .png sequence you import as video in blender.
It's just a blendshape animation.

You can make it to be a separated character with it's own FSM and animationtree, and just make it behave like a character based on player current animation and state.

Like if the cape collision areas detect a wall, then play the cap animation that is close to a wall.

Wont be perfect, but it will look like a 2D cape that reacts to game actions.

If your active project is actually good, you wouldn't be dropping it. You drop projects because you start them without a clear design in mind, likely due to a skill issue (i.e. not having a comprehensive understanding of what it would actually take to build everything). As you work on your project, you learn more and more and begin to alleviate those skill issues, but in doing so, you get a better understanding of how stupid your game idea was in the first place. Thus you start coming up with new, better game ideas with your newfound skills. This will keep happening until you no longer suffer from crippling skill issues.

I think you hit the nail on the head there. For my last project, I dropped it right when I was working on procedural dungeons. I got it to work well enough but ended up thinking it was tedious due to the tileset I was using not working well with my algorithm.

Not really. It's essentially the same thing. If you're capable of sitting down and actually writing down 100% of the systems for your game, then you can finish your game no problem. When I say 100%, I mean that if I ask you what every data field in your save file is, what your entire damage formula is, or what your standardized jump height is, you have an immediate answer for that. None of that "I'll figure it out when I get to programming it" bullshit. Anything else is ideaguy drivel.

Trainwiz's flop bankrupted his publisher, and now he has no idea what to do. They wasted god knows how many shekels to force a gorjillion streamers to play his game, and didn't recoup any of that, let alone the money to pay everyone's wages. Based on his month one player counts, he definitely lied about how much money he got in that first month, which is why he's too embarrassed to come back here. He can't push it out of EA either, since he promised stuff like full voice acting and multiplayer, which will never get done.

I thought the publisher was primarily in trouble due to all that is going on in Israel. But Trainwiz did lie, probably to both himself and the publisher, about the state of Underspace. That also hurt the marketing of Underspace.
The publisher additionally made poor investments in regards to which other developers they invested in. Ascent of Ashes are no longer involved with Camlann Games, but they turned out to be incompetent, foolish or dishonest with themselves in regards to certain aspects of programming. In a systems-heavy simulation game similar to Rimworld. If Camlann Games had micromanaged the apparently incompetent developers of Ascent of Ashes, maybe they would have fared better. The Ascent of Ashes developers were apparently major modders of Rimworld, and must have had some insights and domain knowledge, even though modding a game can be extremely different from designing and developing it.
Other Camlann Games has not fared well either, only Underspace is out and sold somewhat well relatively speaking.

Trainwiz has, as he has stated clearly multiple times openly, the mentality that delivering something broken early is better than delivering something of good quality late. He derived this insight, by his own telling, from an experience during his education, where a classmate prioritized poorly. The issue is that this insight does not always hold. It depends, on a lot of aspects, how to prioritize for a given case. And now Trainwiz has to deal with multiplayer. Final release is not out yet, maybe multiplayer or the final release will work out for Trainwiz.

Also agree with this mentality, but I think he's overestimates his abilities and underestimates the difficulty of what he's promised, especially the multiplayer. If his game wasn't originally designed to be multiplayer, it's next to impossible to hack in without a complete rewrite. Even if he did manage to hack it in, it will be incredibly janky and unfun.

That was indeed a huge mistake, no matter what ideology one has, if the goal is commercial success. Unity was weird at that time with licensing, might still be, but a rewrite in another engine is just such an extremely large undertaking, and something that has sunk, cancelled, delayed or severely hurt several game projects, for instance Blood Bowl 3 and Duke Nukem Forever. An additional, and big, mistake, was writing the Unity project using DOTS while Unity DOTS was still early in development and unstable and buggy, and even not recognizing that choosing to use an unstable implementation was their own fault.

I think that counts towards >>521633051 arguments, to be honest. Unless the final release of Underspace does really well, there are games with much smaller scopes that fared as well or way better. A lot of it is luck, but not all of it.
Though, one could argue either way. Going for an apparently underserved niche, like Underspace did with Freelancer, can be less risky in some ways.

If you're <100IQ, you're never going to make anything worth playing, and so you're better off flipping burgers and playing video games in your free time. You don't know that. I don't remember if he said what his deal with Camlann was, but if they gave him a pay advance, most or all of the sales revenue will go to Camlann until they recoup the pay advance. So even if the game sold, that money doesn't go to Trainwiz until it sells enough.

He got over 100k (I don't remember the exact amount), so the publisher break-even is probably around 300-400 reviews, assuming they get full revenue until they recoup. ToK should be able to hit that in a few weeks.

He does earn a lot of money from modding Bethesda games. But modding is something that is a very uncertain income, and deeply dependent on the choices of a single company, whose economic interests may not always align with his own. As I understand it and am somewhat guessing, Trainwiz divesting into game development and diversifying his income sources was not necessarily irrational, in that perspective.

I worked on my last game for 18 months full time and it earned $350. And it's not like I don't know how to make a decent game because I have two other games that have earned a lot more. But all the skills and all the experience didn't save me from working 18 months and earning $350 for that effort.

I do not know how many more reviews and sales Tower of Kalemonvo will get. Reviews are staying "Very positive", and it is still being played, so it may continue selling decently. On the other hand, SteamDB reports rank #3438 top sellers.

The publisher might already have earned their money back, it might be difficult to tell. But not far off, I am guessing. You could also be right about it.

You sometimes see this question "if you could be instantly good in art or programming, which would you pick?" but personally I would choose writing.

Good coding is difficult but I'm steady in my reps and I think I got a good grip on it.
Drawing is more difficult in my opinion, but also it makes sense to me and I believe I have a good eye for what's good art and what isn't.

Writing might as well be arcane black magic, I have no idea how would you even get good at it, and yet I want to write cool stories for my games and create characters people would fall in love with.

Nta but some publishers have a higher percentage cut until revenue is recouped. At 300 reviews assuming 9,000 copies sold at $20, it comes out to $180k revenue. All that in mind and he maybe made $60k so far. That's rather terrible for almost 10 years of effort. It is worse since the game isn't even done.

Guess that 5% of the players of Skyrim and the other major Bethesda game buy lifetime Creation Credits worth on average $10, and Bethesda takes a cut of 80% and the remaining 20% goes to modders, and Trainwiz mods' constitute 10% in terms of price of those mods among modders, and there are guessed 30 million Bethesda games players, then:

30,000,000 × 5% x $10 x 20% x 10% = $300,000

Really rough guesses, though.

And then divide by 10 if we assume 10 years.
$30K/year. Not great, but not that bad for a job that is not full time. The guesses are too rough, though.

The best games were made with their own engines from the ground up but I have no disillusions about being able to accomplish that. UE3 games had a weird muddy look to them, and character models had this shiny plastic look as well.

That sounds like a gross overestimate.
I think this is his only paid mod https://en.uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim:Forgotten_Seasons and it's a zone + quest. I have no data to back this up, but I suspect very few players will pay for that kind of mod. They'd rather buy horse armor.

I think I'm going to incorporate slav and USSR aesthetics to my scifi game. I have no sympathy for Marxism, but the soviet aesthetics were pretty cool. I got interested in their culture because all the great works from that era are in the public domain. No corpos trademarking IP and hounding me for the crumbs I make from the game.

I think a copyright system where the duration of copyrights for individual artists or groups stays the same, but the duration for works created and owned by corporations gets halved would be incredibly beneficial for the flourishing of human arts.

Added the functionality to set "extra" points not on the board normally, when you use dice that can made > 12. Plan to make this pay 2:1, and obviously add some special chip synergy with it.

I just want to escape the wage cage, is that really too much to ask? I don't want to work some dumbass job that sucks the soul out of my life.
I'm so close to taking all my savings (about $20k USD) and just fucking off to live in some shithole Indian or Southeast Asian city where I can survive on a few hundred dollars a month. You'll be able to read and understand all of this because you just kept doing it and trying to do what the other guys did, until it becomes second nature. "Shut up and draw" is a thing, the skill is what is known as perishable. There's some cerebral stuff you can do, but other artists are incredibly cagey about it for some fucking reason. This guy skipped elaborating at least 2 other lighting workflow steps between 4 and 5, by the way, literal "draw the rest of the horse" shit, don't trust it entirely.

Here's some tutorials from a pr0n artist that was successful enough to move to japan and get further education/work over there, and has yesdev'd VN's at least. Start with "breaking down assumptions" and "learning to copy first."

I just came back to America 2 months ago to do my taxes and other shit.

The only annoying thing is having to leave the country every 3 months to do a visa hop for a week
I went to thailand/singapore/cambodia in those times
Thailand was the worst because it's filled completely with jeets and it's expensive as fuck since they gouge tourists on everything

I generally dislike SEA but vietnam is legitimately one of the best places I stayed in, in my life
It's the only reason I stayed there as long as I did and couldn't even stay 2 weeks in thailand before wanting to gtfo

Saigon sucks with the noise. And it's the most air polluted city so I wouldn't recommend there. I lived in Nha Trang in a hotel.
The Windows are Good enough that you probably won't hear the horns and cars and stuff. But be careful crossing the streets because the motorbikes are nonstop and there are no traffic lights

I ate out everyday too. I don't even particularly like Vietnemese food but there's a billion euro restaurants and a lot of Russian Expats that live in Vietnam to the point where even the locals will try to talk to you in Russian first.
Koreans are now slowly taking over and there's a bunch of new korean restaurants popping up

The beach is extremely nice and the water is like sitting in a bathtub.
I went to the beach every morning and game dev'd until night.
Redbulls and Monster Energy drinks are also like 30/40 cents each so I pounded away energy drinks like crazy

What laptop did you use? I unironically wouldn't want to live in SEA because I like a desktop with 2 monitors. Can't imagine working on a laptop.

Oh. I only work on laptops. I use a Lenovo Legion that I carry around everywhere.
