I assume its because they set an image alpha to count down based on the time/frames from title launch and either set it to a static opacity, or didn't use the inverse of the countdown percentage to calculate their alpha value...

this looks kind of okay, but, i think that there might be different lighting on the girl vs the environment/chairs like look at the back rests on the chairs and how they lighten and darken, then look at her skin and hair and how it is constant. once you realise that, it really makes her look like she is popping out of the environment. and personally i don't really like that unless it was a temporary selection highlight effect.

use a kinematic controller or a floating rigidbody controller.
floating is basically kinematic, except its set up to "float" above collisions, it's for a more springy or fluid feeling movement. Most kinematic controllers have the colliders make contact.
it doesn't have to be kinematic, all that means is that it won't be affected by forces unless you tell it to be.

It's not insanely different from the character controller and the move() methods, just the methods and implementations are different.

i modelled the hair with splines that i use as a path to drive some very basic strand meshes i made. it's very convenient for iteration because it's nondestructive. the outlines are done by a sobel filter that reads normals and diffuse.

and yeah she doesn't respect the lighting at all right now, the interior is done through lightmaps that I'm baking out in max because it gives me control of how they work, but obviously that's not applicable to a character mesh. a proper solution is probably going to require me to reprogram the engine further, but for now im planning to just do the classic light vector dot normal nonsense and get a simple vector from nearby light sources to read direction and colour.

Adding her as a guest character is definitely in consideration. I can't make any pormises though. I'm kinda done making characters for now after doing it back to back to back to back. Keep in mind I didn't know much about modeling characters before this. It's funny as there are dev lore reasons as to why Aurora and Ayako ended up becoming different characters. My issue with trees being culled too vigorously is still there, but the frame rate I'm seeing is extremely promising. This is while using Game Maker Studio 2's virtual machine instead of properly compiling the game as well. Using the YoYo Compiler, the frame rate is more than doubled. I have other ideas on how to optimize the graphics but I'll need to do more research for that.

The big issue is how GMS2 handles draw events. Even if there's nothing actually been drawn in the draw event of an instance, it still takes cycle time. My big issues I've been working on have been foliage drawing not being buffered as best as it could, as well as foliage being drawn even if it's off screen while in multiplayer. But you're absolutely right about me needing to use the profiler more. That being said, last time I did nothing bigger than drawing being heavy stood out to me.

Protip: the _Input method in Godot does not work correctly with analog sticks. It's also shit for action gameplay, so it's only good for menu/misc actions (that don't use the analog stick). What the engine expects you to do is to check for action gameplay inputs in the _Process function, and use the built-in button focus system for menu navigation. Anything else means you're using the engine wrong and it will break on you. Ignore the docs telling you to use _Input/_UnhandledInput. They are lying.

Another Godot tip: avoid using SubViewports. They are glitched and broken on Linux and will only cause headaches. The more esoteric/complex the feature you want to include in your game, the less you should use Godot. Those features are usually broken.

My game takes place in only one scene like an arcade game. Is it worth making a debug scene which is the exact same thing but with more testing features or should I just incorporate it into the level manager script?

Godot sells signals as 'you shout into a void and anyone that cares to listen hears you'. In reality signals are you shouting into a can tied with a string to a bunch of other cans and you have to make sure you tie the strings before you shout. This is completely ass backwards in an engine and language that allows direct access between any class or function to ANY member in any other class or function. There is no such thing as private in godot.

The retarded example godot devs give of how to use signals is: an enemy collides with your player, you get the collider info and get the parent which is the player and then connect a signal between the enemy and the player to call a damage function in the player. This is retarded because if you know the ID of the player then you can directly call the damage function from the enemy class. Oh and don't forget that signals are only one way, if you want to relay any information back from the player to the enemy then you have to call a function in the player script to setup a second signal. And then you have to remember to dispose of the signal connections properly before you free the enemy or player scripts.

You point out this retarded shit and anyone that has spent any amount of time working with the engine will admit that they use a signal manager singleton where scripts blindly subscribe to one half of a signal and depend on the signal manager to know who to relay the other half of the signal to because scripts don't know the ID of the script they're trying to signal to ahead of time.

you don't have to do any of that, aside from connecting the area_entered signal to a function in an abstract class that both a node under the player and one under the enemy inherit from, this class' methods will automatically handle reducing the hitpoints of whoever got hit with a simple subtraction, then the death animation and freeing when the hitpoints <=0, you don't have to call any more signals, are you fucking stupid? another day another prototype to abandon
wanted to experiment with pre-rendered 3d models into directional sprites like in prodeus
but in that game the sprites are rendered at runtime so the lighting info is correct
although I have a normal map spritesheet as well, it is still a quad mesh so depending on the direction of the light source it might look good enough or complete trash.

Maybe use fresnel so you can take advantage of the normal map in some way

not sure in unreal what are the equivalent functions, but for prodeus (unity) I think its also called render texture
from what I could find, they have the models somewhere else in the level and build an atlas at runtime as needed
then just sample from said atlas unto a quad
not sure if they render the models with a fixed background color and then filter the color out to get transparency, or simply have a dedicated render layer for these models
and I don't know if they render the normal maps into a sprite atlas as well or somehow replicate the light conditions in their atlas build space, the latter seems crazy tho

i don't actually know what game to make with it thoughbeit. my idea was to make it randomly generated with a huge amount of variation for different player options since you can generate pictures quickly but it's way more work than i expected and I don't actually want to do that. maybe it would be better to make it more like a narrative based game focused on specific characters and generating a lot of art of them instead with only a few variations based on a smaller number of possible player race choices. but i'm not sure if anyone would pay for an AI coom game

I implemented my game's save system in the first 72 hours of development. I made two versions, binary for release and the json for testing. It was super useful to be able to create any kind of save condition by editing the save file in a text editor.

You almost certainly want to learn specifically how to do object-oriented programming for game development - so start by following a 'basic object oriented programming' course or something online.
Make sure you do practical exercises like making little toy programs because it's the only way to really make sure you're understanding stuff.

After you finish / get bored of that - pick an engine or library or whatever takes your interest and try and do something with it and you'll quickly pick up stuff as you figure it out .
Don't let anons try to tell you which one to use because you're not obligated to stick to any one engine / framework - and no matter what you do it's all valuable experience even if you don't stick with it

mess around with it. watch tutorials that cover the fundamentals, then get a physical book about the language you're learning, and try to build stuff.
Only refer to the book. If you can't find or afford a physical copy, find a free pdf of it online. Alternatively, keep the documentation and scripting API for whatever engine you're using handy.

If you're trying to build something, do it with the above method (mess around, read through the book/docs when you get stuck) until you hit a point where you can no longer progress.
Then, find a couple tutorial videos or articles that cover that thing.
Don't follow the tutorial verbatim, just see what they're doing differently from you. If they use any methods you're unfamiliar with, then research that.

Also, learn the commonly used programming patterns for games. Things like factory pattern, flyweight, observer, etc.
Patterns are good, and they don't care what language you're using. It's basically the logical structure for solving specific problems. If you know some of them, it'll speed up everything because you won't have to think as much. Just: run into problem, find a way to explain the problem, decide which pattern best fits that problem, then apply that pattern in your game.

Having a clear cut inheritance or interface structure is good though, which the right pattern can give you if you use it appropriately

The point of using signals is extensibility.

Need to subtract hp? Connect on_hit to subtract_hp
Need to emit some blood particles? Connect on_hit to emit_particles
Need to play some sound effects? Connect on_hit to play_sound

You can easily add new connections without changing old code, and therefore there is no risk of breaking old code with new code.

You must not be familiar with game maker. The object o_enemy_attack, is itself a set of functions that trigger at specific steps. Programming in Gamemaker is not dissimilar to playing a tabletop game with a draw phase, main phase, and end phase.

You are looking at code that handles every enemy attack in an ARPG. All of them. Every single one.
