Alright, so in the Shots and Such ending, the ending dialogue includes pic related, which is leading me to believe that maybe, just maybe, the wounds Andrew and Ashley inflict on each other in the Burial sex vision are actually a sign that the vision is from a bad end path, because like the Shots and Such ending, they're doing it because they still have unresolved issues with each other, and it will lead them down a bad path.
This would also explain why Nemlei changed the message and added the skull before going through the 'incest door'. Maybe that route is a red herring, like it's a path where they just use sex to try and cover up their unresolved issues and it ends up not working?
Thoughts?

The way Andrew and his mom interact during the flashbacks feel a bit like a retcon.
Nothing too big but the impression I got from Ashley during episode two was that both at least faked being cordial to one another, they don't even try during the flashbacks we see.

that's basically the conclusion I came to after seeing the changes and how decay went. The vision for decay happens in a bad end route, it's not that out of the question the same is done in Burial, though at least in burial it seems to be a bit more upbeat, perhaps a calm before the storm sort of deal.

The more I think about it, the more I believe Ashley's claims about Julia being two sided.

She called Ashley to tell about her and Andrew even though Andrew wanted to do it himself(and it caused him to resent her).
We still dont know who started the rumors about Ashley and Andrew, but I think it was also Julia, especially with how she brings it up.

I feel like Julia is more manipulative than she lets on, but she's much more sneaky about it, I wouldn't even put it past her that she suspected they killed Nina and it's why she brought Andrew to Nina's grave.

Her letter to Andrew seems to imply she suspects that, but I think she blamed Ashley only at first and thought she can take Andrew away from it until she realized he's also complicit.

It willb be interesting to see more of Ashley's side of the story in Burial run, but so far Ashley has had a good read on people and i no longer think she was merely being angry, I think she was right about Julia all along.

I might identify more with Ashley, but she's way less in the wrong than he is. To be perfectly honest, it's one of the few things I don't like about Decay 3a is that the whole conflict feels like it's being perpetuated for the sake of creating conflict rather than something stemming from genuine emotion. It's not completely beyond the pale or anything, but the fact that even an irrational person would very obviously be able to tell that a miniscule scrap of perspective would resolve the entire conflict. Not to say Burial might not have similar problems, but 3a just feels unnatural compared to chapter 2 in general.

Holy shit, there is so much stuff to unpack that it's going to take me several days to digest and let it settle.
My biggest complaint by far is that I really really wanted to see an endstate where Andrew just leaves. Forever.
After Julia breaks up with him and friend B gives him 20$, I wanted to see a route where he doesn't go back. Even if it just finishes there with a drawing of him being sad, I wanted to see it.
The flip side of this is that I also reeeeally wanted to see a route where Andrew is able to turn the tables on Ashley, and pull off a reverse of the "bitch in a box" Andy ending.
Not a 1 for 1 of pic related, but at least something similar. She can't live without him. The only reason she has power in the relationship is because she thinks he feels the same. Which is true as we've seen, but that doesn't mean he can't bluff. By threatening to walk away, he can hurt her FAR more than his beatings ever could. As soon as she acts up, his retaliation is effortless, and he can just walk out the door.

Make a few branching options that lead to a different drawing card.

I could tell where the route was leading even before it ended, but I was shocked that there wasn't an option for Andy to commit suicide by himself, without her.
A different side to it might have been that at least Ashley could have acknowledged / realized that she was hurting him, but admits that keeping him is more important to her than his happiness. Possibly show that she somewhat tries to do things to make him happy, but they're obviously surface level stuff like bringing him cigarettes rather than solving the deeper issue. At least this way it makes her seem evil rather than just retarded.

The last option would be to double down on the Dominant Ashley stuff. It'd be mostly out of character, but just go all out and have Andrew get turned on by the fact that she is owns him. To make it fit with the narrative, you could point out that he is relieved that SHE is the one handling everything now; and how he's actually a bit proud of her. Rather than causing problems and forcing him to fix everything, she is now the one cleaning up the messes whilst he is just tagging along for the ride. Their roles have switched, and he feels liberated despite the fact the she's "in control" since it means he no longer has to carry the burden anymore.

Andrew has succumbed to his delusions and dies happy to fulfill a romantic gesture of dying together, but look at Ashley.

She looked either scared, or sad, or both.

They were not happy because Andrew couldn't reconcile his feelings for Ashley and rejected her when she tried to do what he wanted to do, grow up from Leyley into his Ashley.

Her acting like a brat for most of the story is his fault, because Ashley is perceptive enough to see what i means and if he rejects Ashley, then she'll only stay Leyley.

Until the ending, that is, when her last moments in life she finally lets this guard down and dies as who she really is behind her brave face persona.

If Andrew were a basically decent person and Ashley were the sole monster in their relationship, then Andrew and Julia being together—and Ashley learning to let him live his own life—would actually be the good ending.

But Burial or Decay, Sane or Questionable, it doesn't actually make a difference to the specific fact that Andrew never genuinely cared about Julia except as a tool to mask himself and pretend he isn't a psycho, or a creepy incestuous pervert.

As much as the "Sane" route is the "healthier" thing for Ashley to do, it probably won't lead to a good ending—although I suspect the "Questionable" route probably has its own foibles. I also wouldn't be surprised if at least one of the burial routes ends up being as fucked as Shots and Such.

I don't know how variables are set in the code, but it's worth noting that you get the exact same ending to Chapter 2 if you take the questionable route, but then have Ashley back off when Andrew starts freaking out about seeing the sex vision. So the door choice itself doesn't seem to matter as much as Ashley's reaction (decided on by the player) on whether she agrees that their relationship won't tend towards being sexual, or whether she's absolutely fine with pursuing that with Andrew.

The whole S&S route in particular, Ashley outright refuses to pull the trigger when given the chance. It certainly makes that a more illegitimate decision for her character, and the same can be said fod the Andy route. He already is in mutiny against Ashley, that he would stop in a fairly low-stakes environment after she pushes his buttons again really just wouldn't happen. Nothing against the writing overall, but it is clear what direction would actually occur with the characters we knew from the first two chapters.

I think Ashley is written well enough where, especially in Ch 1 and 2, that even though she is guilty of everything she did to Andrew, that she has genuine feelings for him. She's just so damn stupid about how selfish she is.

Decay almost entirely feels like it's from that angle though, probably intentionally so. I wonder if Burial will be kinder to Ashley.

Honestly I like how this game plays and its puzzles, but I dont think I like doing puzzles for 6 hours straight.
I really should have played ep3 in 2 or 3 batches. Going 6 hours straight ruined the whole thing a bit because by hour 4 y was so done with the puzzles, I barely paid attention to anything in the last hour.
I was also on 3 hours of sleep that day, didn't help either.

It's really no surprise, we can see that Andrew as a child did seem to have some affection for Renee and wanted her approval, obviously that faded over time thanks to Renee's shitty parenting so he was only left with Ashley seeing as Douglas himself was more like a piece of furniture, and even with Ashley even if she gives him validation it's a fact that their relationship is fraught with various emotional and psychological issues, Lord Unknown is the first person at least for Andrew to give him emotional validation about he true self without any manipulation in between, obviously that may change depending on what we learn from LU in episode 4, but Andrew sees it that way for the moment

Sure, things could still always turn sour and it might well be part of a bad end route but they seem content enough in burials vision alone.

Brute forcing busts might be easy, since to the best of our knowledge, they are of the format "img/faces/PREFIX_EMOTION[BUST].png", where PREFIX tends to be a short alphanumeric sequence, and EMOTION tends to be an English word, and the words tend to be repeated between busts, of which we already know many.
This is what my opinion WOULD be if I hadn't already tried brute forcing the busts. I am finding it worryingly easy to reverse the names of chapter 2 busts, while finding not a single chapter 3 bust. It might just be that I am unlucky, and I haven't gone through every already known emotion yet, but this IS pointing to one of two things. Either the prefixes have gotten longer, or the format has changed. The latter would be truly hopeless.
