imo the branching paths determine how much of a spine Andrew has. If he accepts the olive branch from his parents he's a bitch who's still scared of his mom.
If he caves on the Andy thing he's a bitch who will just do whatever Ashley tells him.
It seems like once Andrew is "solved" Ashley kinda just forgets his existence matters at all and begins to romanticize the demon instead since he's an authority figure who she has to listen to.
This also makes me feel like in Burial we're going to have a take charge Andrew who makes Ashley into a fucking faucet.
That said it's hard to read into this stuff too much because I think that the branching paths don't necessarily represent what these characters choose to do in the moment, but who they really are in the minds of the players. And if Andrew was a spineless bitch who just spends his life getting walked on, Ashley probably wouldn't love him.

As someone with the headcanon of it being Pomerania, I feel like it doesn't truly matter in her story. Religion isn't brought up period, and all of her games have been devoid of real-world religious mainstream imagery. The grandparents are the only thing now that springs to mind, and they don't have any denomination mentioned. I only assume that their society is irreligious like the writer and that what christians remain are evenly Protestant and Catholic; with a little Eastern Orthodoxy. It's all fruitless though, as the author is secular enough that there probably won't ever be any Christian subtext in the game. A bit of a shame, I felt like it could accentuate how flawed and messed up their world is as disillusionment with their situation and faith's failure to keep them going would have been a decent motiff. But alas Nemlei seemingly has no particularly cold experience with christianity, which is good for her at least. I feel Ashley would have tried desperately to be a Christian, and would despair in tears for why her savior wouldn't answer her prayers; doubting herself with what she did to make Jesus turn away from her. Wondering why she was left with a mother that thought little of her, and why she and Andrew were so destitute. In the unmatured mind of a child or teen in misery, this worldview wouldn't seem unrealistic.

Ashley's conflict is that she doesn't know how to be normal, but she loves Andrew who wants to be normal.
Andrew's conflict is that he wants to be normal, but loves Ashley who doesn't know how to be normal.

This can be resolved (positively) in only two ways:
1. Ashley learns to be normal
2. Andrew stops caring about being normal
There are of course numerous ways for them to fail and those are the bad endings.

I always thought the game took place in America but the more I think about it Northern or Eastern Europe makes more sense. America has a lot of corruption but nothing like the water company organ harvesting would happen here.

I'm kind of sympathetic to Doug honestly. Even more interesting is that the siblings don't give a shit about him but they don't hate him either. When they're arguing in a later flashback and he asks them to let him sleep they actually listen and Andrew even seems a bit embarrassed. Even his ghost is "kind but aloof" and seems happy to see Andrew in the vision at the very start. He wasn't a bad guy, he just never had it in him to be what they needed him to be.

If you look at the environments it definitely seems more European, or at least created by someone from Europe.
The residential road in chapter 2 is just barely wide enough for two cars to pass each other which is the norm in Europe but I think in the US it would even be illegal to build a road that narrow.
Also the bathrooms are consistently connected to hallways rather than bedrooms.

Trusting andrew was removed instead for an option where Ashley inquires the trinket about if she should leave Andrew with the parents and she does that after the trinket makes her think its okay. And the warning wasn't always there. Previously the only text prompt when choosing between having the sex vision or not was a simple "are you sure?". It was changed to the "this isn't going to go down the way you think it is" this update, along with the addition to make Ashley lock up Andrew before the vision.

The thing I don't like the most about the episode 2 retcon is that it makes a first time playthrough a lot more confusing. Decay is supposed to be the route where the two are on a more negative and toxic journey due to Ashley not making any attempts to accept Andrew's tries to improve their relationship.

However no, if you ask me, a new player will read the "No. Trust the trinket." prompt and think that one is more negative and less trustful than the FUCK THAT option because in that one Ashley doesn't trust him and decides to trust the demon over him, compared to her just not trusting him.

It really seems to me like new coffin players will get stuck in the decay route constantly because of this one choice now making it very hard to even know that there is a route that starts of better than decay.

Now she jumps to the trinket instantly, meaning the idea of trusting Andrew did not even come in her head at all. It's a very different thing in terms of character work.

there's your first problem, the routes are supposed to be equal, what that entails we'll see when it happens.

I do hope the change is walked back when burial is released, but it could also be changed to make the actual story make more sense. You need to have not wasted all the bullets in the gun in Episode 2, then choose to shoot Andrew in the dream at the end of Episode 2. You'll be on the dead-end/cliffhanger route in Episode 3 and you get the "Shots and Such" ending by finding an engagement ring on an alternate path in the forest after you dodge the cops at the gas station, then choose to not throw it away in a later scene.

Sex in and of itself solves nothing, which is the only thing you are correct about. It's *how* it's approached and the intentions behind it. In Shots in Such, Ashley coerced Andrew into sex despite his refusals and feeling it was wrong. Making him drink until he lost all inhibitions. He wanted it, but "not like this." Ashley herself was not even aroused and only saw it as a tool of pinning him down - with Andrew waking up not with satisfaction, but resentment.

In the Murder-Suicide ending, Andrew makes it expressly clear he is not "into Leyley" - he wants "Ashley." This is expounded on in Shots and Such when he calls out that "Leyley" is a child that goes through meltdown after meltdown, never learns, and only responds to abuse. Whereas "Ashley" was powerful, dark, and charismatic and that's what he was captivated with. And the kicker? He is the reason for her unrelenting insecurity.

He rejected her honest advances, conflating them as a joke. Except that was the one instance she was being sincere and not manipulating him. She outlined to him previously that she's "kinda not into it...but maybe." Notice how Ashley was namely discussing the sexual aspect of dating and marriage. Remember how Nemlei said that sex doesn't fit into Ashley's ideal of "Andy and Leyley" where Andrew loves her unconditionally no matter what? But here and only here was she willing to let go of that. And thought maybe it would be "a good thing." Change might be "good." And what does Andrew do? He shuts off. Flees. Avoids her. And gets rewarded with permanent Leyley.

Instead of thinking of it as a retcon think of it more as trying to bring the initial mindset for both paths at the same level. A core theme of the game is Ashley's lack of self esteem. Her self worth is so low that she cannot conceive Andrew willingly sticking with her. From childhood, no one has willingly stick with her and she (mistakenly or otherwise) believes that Andrew is the same. As kids, Renee always pushed Ashley to Andrew. However, since at school Andrew didn't like spending too much time with Ashley, she though that even Andrew only stuck with her because of their mother's words.
Next, Ashley broke the blood pact by snitching about the murder to Renee. With both factors, Ashley has no confidence that Andrew would ever stick with her willingly. In both paths, Ashley should have the same mindset, and Ashley's confidence in Andrew would always stem from the trinket, and nothing in the story up to the choice had suggested to Ashley that Andrew was willingly staying with Ashley. It is only after Andrew rejects Renee that Ashley would get the first hint that Andrew might be willing to follow her willingly.
So it wouldn't make sense that Ashley trust Andrew before that, as Andrew has always been rather lukewarm and not even a few hours prior Andrew was unwilling to kill the parents. When Andrew refuses Renee's olive branch, Andrew demonstrates that he is not trying to run away from Ashley. It starts the process of Andrew building trust in Ashley and its why she is willing to share the trinket in burial route and not in decay where Andrew hesitates. Ashley does not have to different mentality when making the decision to leave Andrew with their parents, in one path she is slightly more willing to give a chance to see what Andrew does.

So no, not a fuck you but a more clear representation of Ashley's mind.

This is more so subjective at this point but even with the choking. Andrew and Ashley seemed much more friendly, trustful and just chill with one another in episode 1. In episode 3 of the true route, there's constantly an underlying tension that one of them is gonna snap and kill the other and there isn't a single moment where either of them feel comfortable with one another. They kiss because Andrew is desperate to get Ashley to trust him and it doesn't even work.

The choking argument and fight in episode 1 felt a lot more spurred by the extremely high tensions they were going through because of them having to escape and the way they made up after it to me felt like it was supposed to be a lot more comfortable than all the stuff that has happened in decay so far.

In episode 1, Ashley accuses Andrew of killing 302 girl because she rejected him and Andrew was considering killing Ashley just to make his life easier. That's not exactly a trusting relationship

In episode 3, they're arguably in a worse spot than before because they're on the run and stuck in a demon realm. But Ashley listens to Andrew about not killing the campers and she actually tries being honest with him. The kisses from Andrew aren't supposed to be manipulative, they're affectionate. It's pretty obvious since Ashley gets all flustered and can't even understand what the manipulation would even be when he kissed her the second time. Even Andrew thinks their relationship is better now so I wouldn't say it's subjective
