I'm honestly really glad this general exists. It's true that discussion here is better than anywhere else and I genuinely have a lot of fun talking in depth about the game with anons. Knowing there's a whole group of people as obsessed with the game as I am just proves how special Coffin is as a whole. I have a deep admiration for Nemlei so far at least. Staying up and messing up my sleeping pattern the second 3A dropped, other anons here doing the same, not being able to think about anything other than Coffin etc, it's been the most fun I've had in a while anons! I usually hate starting unfinished stuff, but with Coffin it's been fun to have been here almost from the very beginning.

That's the route where she isn't maturing as a person. My guess is she sees it as a power play. She wants him to know she'll do what she wants and doesn't give a shit what he tells her. Andy would back down, and maybe she doesn't really expect Andrew to, but she can't make herself "give in" and doesn't know how else to handle that situation.

Renee and Rosa are both abusive mothers. Whilst Renee has Douglas and genuinely loves him, Rosa's baby daddy abandoned her ASAP, leaving her as a single mother who is used goods that no one actually loves. This makes her seethe and she becomes abusive to her daughter, telling her that she hasn't loved her even once in her life (amongst other things). As for whether she's a cute fuck up or not I can't say because I hate her, but she has her waifufags.
Perhaps Rosa is what Renee would become (as a tar soul to be that never fully hatched) if she didn't have Douglas.
Douglas is truly Renee's tether, without him I think she'd be a completely lost cause. He is the only love she feels towards anything in the entire world.

I think picrel, if you take out the single mother parts obviously (because Douglas is THE GOAT) is pretty similar to how Renee feels about Ashley. Both Renee and Rosa hate their difficult daughters. Both are obsessed with keeping up appearances and looking good in the eyes of society (I'd also argue a big motivation for this is both want to prove their families wrong). Both resent being mothers. Both resent how much they have to work to provide for their child(ren). They both can't appear good to the outside world like they so desperately desire because of their daughters. Both see their daughters as huge embarrassments. I really enjoy reading deep dives into abusive parents like this, especially mothers. It's so interesting to me.

Lord Unknown will sacrifice Ashley's soul and in exchange, Nina will survive. Her and Julia will grow into adulthood and occasionally think about the unfortunate weird girl who died in elementary school. But they'll quickly move on. Andrew will grow into a total robot. He'll be totally incapable of connecting with the people around him, but will be able to keep up a facade. He'll get a scholarship for a good school, go far away to become a lawyer, and never contact his parents (who are happy to be rid of him) again. Late at night, in bed with the wife he's still trying to love, he'll wonder if things could have been any different.
But he'll never know.

I can see the similarity but it's hard to tell who loves their kid more. Rosa always apologizes to Maria after every beating because it seems to tear her heart apart after realizing what she did. Renee, on the other hand, has very little to no remorse over her actions.

Very little remorse, but not none.

The surgeon wanted to trick the parents into getting tested and locked up with the kids. Then he tried getting them to willingly join the kids in death. Then finally offering them cash + a tip on how to get more from life insurance.

Renee asked if she could help them and the Surgeon reaffirmed that they would be dead very soon and she can't stop it. Considering that these people have been murdering entire buildings, getting shoot-to-kill orders preventing rescues and sending hitmen after loose ends. Renee probably took the last possible offramp before she and Douglas mysteriously disappeared by agreeing to the deal.

Still, the surgeon told them that they would die very soon. Instead she had months of calls from the kids begging for help. So much that she couldn't even bear talking to Ashley anymore with her final "g-goodbye" showing that she was wavering.

She even mentions "they say absence makes the heart grow fonder" and the devlogs confirm she and Andrew are quite similar and they could have reached a deal to go their separate ways before they were forced into the basement at gunpoint. That's when what little love for them that remained vanished and why you can't have a real peace with Olive Branches because it takes place after they're tied up.

Both routes will have a good ending. Both routes will also feature incest.
The good ending in Decay relies on Andrew reaching his breaking point and having to confront the "rot" inside of him (wanting to fuck his sister). The good ending in Burial will rely on Ashley reaching her breaking point and having to bury Leyley (she has to grow up at last).
Decay has jokes and feelings that lead to incest; Burial may have incest that leads to them grappling with their feelings.
However, the 4 hour voiced sex scene (complete with foreplay, dirty talk, and a lot of sibling moans) will be locked behind a fully randomized puzzle during which you can't save, nor does it save any progress automatically. Failure deletes all your saves as well, so you have to get it right the first time.

So it took me a good 3 days of playing to actually finish Decay 3A. Played the main route with friends and only used a guide when I needed, took 12 hours and then did everything else in a single play session after.
What is the general consensus on Episode 3A?
I didn't enjoy the main route much, and while I feel I'm biased since my friends read really slow to the tism, I feel it was too much exposition and the writing was a bit dodgy.
I enjoyed the alternate route with the wedding ring and while the "Leyley Wins" ending is fucking anticlimactic, it still feels like a better climax than what the main story path is. Also, seeing the absolute worst of both protagonists made me fucking wrench in disgust, a feat rarely achieved by games for me.
Also I swear to fuck I saw an image of a high-school aged Renee and her husband but I cannot tell if it was fanart, it was from a YouTube thumbnail.

Again, I agree. What I'm saying and where I think we're at odds is that I don't believe Andrew can successfully do this if he goes down the route, which Lord Unknown is setting him on, of becoming a tar soul himself. He needs to find a way to move on from the past that isn't just giving up his own humanity to avoid the trap, however that looks in practice. Continuing to hate and resent AshLeyley would cause him to fail, but how could he stop Ashley from becoming a demon if he lets Lord Unknown set him down the same path? Would he even want to?

Divilethion - Pretty good short story. Liked both endings. Only problem I had was the girl cultist, in one route she seemed compassionate and disturbed at how heartless the MC was then in the other route she turns into a fanatic who has no problem with killing, seems like a bit of a 180. Also at one point she accuses the MC of being a hypocrite for being unwilling to sacrifice a family member but we already know that he sacrificed his mother, if anyone is being hypocritical it's the bitch who is suppose to be a priest but hasn't done anything for Divilethion thinking she's better than the guy who has done more for Divilethion than everybody else in the village combined but has one line he won't cross.

Better Half - Interesting premise but the story needs a rewrite. The MC is pretty good but the entire mage subplot should be dropped, it should be more of a Groundhog's Day/Liar Liar type story where the curse itself is the focus and not the hows and whys. Plus I just find the mages annoying and I'm butthurt there isn't an ending where you can turn them in for their crimes, or stab them to death.

Candy Scabs - I found it pretty dark even by Nemlei's standards. You spend most of the game getting to know this sweet girl and then in two of the paths you read about her getting brutally assaulted by someone she thought was her friend. There's a good end but when you see how bad things could've gone it just feels kind of hollow.

No-Good Noelle - Biggest take away is that this is by far the most upbeat Nemlei story. In both endings the MC gets a pretty good end. The art style is bright and cheerful. In the rest of Nemlei's settings evil rules and good is impotent, In NGN it's the opposite and the best the forces of evil can do is scheme from the shadows because if they reveal themselves they're doomed.
That's not to say it's all sunshine and rainbows, it's a Nemlei story so it has plenty of dark stuff but the outcome is far more lighthearted than most of Nemlei's stuff. The child eating demon gets punished no matter the ending and doesn't eat any more children, Noelle gets threatened with prostitution but doesn't have to go through with it.

We probably would see even more of stuff like that in Burial route, when we see Ashley's side of things, but what I am getting so far, is that Leyley is Ashley's protective bubble she created to deal with crushing loneliness and adversity.

Leyley is loud, brash, talks back at everyone with even more vitriol than she gets, she dishes out what she gets, but she's also an escapist persona for her to hide behind, to not show how things have hurt her.

If Andrew rejected her when she approached him as Ashley and now they settle for the joke that whatever they had going on prior to episode 1, with fake cuddling, etc, then Ashley has no real reason to come out of her shell, while Leyley takes it all for a joke it really is.

One part I think is really underrated in episode 3A is the opening montage of Andrew's hate and resentment, a montage of all the sacirfices he makes, his kills for her, only for her(in his mind) to not take it seriously and demand more is great.

For most of it, she doesn't, like laughing at how much their lives have fallen apart, turning killing the Hitman into a joke.

However, there are some occasional moments where I think the mask slips, she shows she's actually afraid of their confinement, and she's wondering why they won't just kill them, she wanted Renee to help them, and she was hurt no one they knew did anything to help them either, but those are only small moments where she stops pretending.

Man, I did cliffhanger route first, then did Shots and Such and now I'm depressed. Kinda wish I did it the other way around. Shots and Such was just... sad, just terribly, achingly, sad. It ended up turning into a situation where both parties, despite deep down loving each other in some way only keep making each other miserable. Yet at the same time they can only ever find comfort in each other, so it just ends up being an endless cycle of hurting each other then comforting each other, never really getting anywhere.
Andrew beating Ashley was particularly hard to watch (masterfully written). It felt like a final irreversible breakdown of the relationship (siblings), and the reaction to it afterwards from both sides was truly heartbreaking. All in all though, I kneel before Nemlei's character writing. It's amazing how deeply invested I've become in the story of Andrew and Ashley.

You also see that her desire to kill Renee stems not just from her devilishly fienidish planning, as she makes it out to Andrew and ???, but also resentment over Renee's betrayal, and it's another time where we see what may be driving her beyond what she claims.

Andrew hasn't really shown to be all that bothered by their situation in episode 1, and he's largely written off Renee and Douglas as failures, but Ashley kept hoping.

Bold prediction: Chapter 4 will be Andrew deciding how to handle his life and hatching into a true Grime/Tar whatever soul. Meanwhile, back in the cross demon realm Ashley is freaking the fuck out because ??? (Presumably) lost contact with Andrew. She freaks the fuck out and tries more and more desperate things, and it all comes to a head when it causes Strife between her and ???. And just as ???'s had enough of her shit and is about to kill her/steal her soul, Andrew and Lord Unknown will be there to save her. This leads to them somewhat reconciliation their problems, and maybe becoming Demons themselves or going back to the Human World to live out a S&S kind of ending, with much less domestic abuse... My take is that going along with Lord Unknown is actually setting Andrew up for a bad end because demons may not be intentionally malicious they are very autistic and only do things that benefit themselves. So the good ending is Andrew growing without actually giving in to Lord Unknown's plans that may involve harming Ashley or himself. This probably includes being honest to Ashley and working with ??? to escape the open ended deal he's unfortunately made in a moment of weakness.

I've only played a little so far, I'm just at the campsite path puzzle, but wow. This is so fucking good. I honestly lost most of my love for the game with how long it had been. I completely stopped posting here. I checked every monthly update, and I loved the character designs, sure, but I forgot just how much fun it was to experience these characters, Nemlei is really good at writing them. And the art too is sooo good. I've caught a couple secret star moments so far and it feels so nice to see those scenes. I thought it'd be just a small little sentence or two but they're much more substantial than I expected and it makes them feel even more rewarding.

It's actually the theme of the big Julia room. Andrew takes a key from Julia's bed and uses it to get a heart (Ashley's?) and sweep that heart under the rug in Julia's room while pretending she's Ashley during sex.

I just replayed through that part now trying to see a specific segment and noticed that sequence of events. It doesn't matter who's heart it is really. Either works as good allegory.

Well we're definitely under the impression the painting was from Ashley's perspective now so she might be assuming what will happen when she lets Andrew make his own decisions without interfering after she realizes Andrew isn't dependent on her anymore (wrong) and circling depression. I'm guessing there's a 70/30 chance that the "sane" route might actually be the proper incest route when Andrew turns around and comfortably chooses Ashley because Leyley is dying naturally.
And then the "incest" route is actually a fucked up demon route where they turn into a pair of demons or fuse their souls together literally or some other godawful abomination that only zonked Andrew could find romantic

I'm still of the belief that there'll be an ending in Burial that has Andrew get back together with Julia while Ashley watches on miserably, it's admittedly flimsy evidence but Andrew's internal monologue about getting back with Julia in Shots and Such might be foreshadowing for it considering there's foreshadowing for Decaying Along in the same path.

As in, mutual death but in a romantic sense.

Now I don't mean to say that I don't like an happy end to them, I really do like to see the Graves finally express their true unfiltered feelings and finally let the air out and embrace each other for what they really are. But I genuinely feel the most fitting full stop to their story would be their mutual death while embracing each other wholeheartedly.
We basically got that in the deadliest dead-end which was legitimately my favorite ending by far in the whole game but that felt a bit short and very violent.
And to elaborate, I don't consider it a bad end nor do I want a worst ending for the siblings. They're horrible people and the weight of their action should bite them in the ass but I don't want it to just be cops shooting lead through their domes. I want a proper conclusion to the story of Graves in a way that doesn't feel hollow or just unearnest like shots and such ending.

The neglectful cunt of a mother, the monster of a sister, the doormat of a grandmother, the too full of himself grandfather who talks a lot but clearly failed as a parent with how his own son ended up.
Kid just wanted to study to get in a good school and escape from his hell family but even that was too much.

I can see that but I like the mix and feel its a lot rarer of a niche to fill and that makes me happy, not being a full on horror person usually myself.
And the humor actually has my busting my ass off laughing at times which doesn't always or usually happen with stuff; she's really quite good at humor writing without just being nonsense jokes since it's deeply rooted in both the characters and the story at large.
And I love her general dialogue writing too it's fucking phenomenal.
