That puzzle where you have two stars on an elevated platform on each side and you push them into a groove with three checkered positions was bugged at release, right? The one you do as Ashley before you go to the summoning grounds with the entity.
I remember being stuck there, trying each possible combination and none worked, over and over again since there were 9 possible combinations. Reloaded once, it didn't work either. Reloaded a second time, and pushed the stars into the middle position each and it worked perfectly. Really fucking confused me.

You're already on camera at the gas station, the kid may have already described you, and the cops who saw you there would have been part of the response. Those two may even have been the first on the scene given how fast they arrived.

The demon seems to have stolen the souls of the policemen though, and the camera in the gas station may not have been plugged in, and the cashier is probably not sentient enough to give a better description, so maybe it works out? That's a lot of bodies either way though, and possibly a traumatized child. If they weren't on the news before they sure as fuck are now.

People concocted a false dilemma because their brains are made of mush. Either she must be interested in sex or she considers it as possible leverage over Andrew. Since the game confirms the latter, for some reason they thought it disproved the former. As if both could not be true at the same time.

I have finally gotten to play the new chapter and got two endings, but I am not really sure what is the true ending as I just found out there is a third I have to go back to episode 2 to fix. I ended up with the pregnancy ending for one, then I got the jumping one, but apparently if I go back to episode 2 and have no bullets I can get another ending. Is that the true one? Is there a name to that path I can look up a walkthrough so I don't mess up again?

Yeah, there is an ending that will lead you to Episode 4 when it comes out. Because of that some people refer to it as "Cliffhanger Ending". I am not spoiling it for you but you will take deep look into Andrew's psych.

You didn't get the true ending. You can have bullets, but you just mustn't shoot Andrew in Ashley's vision and let him slice her throat. Then later in Episode 3, choose Andrew and not Andy. That puts you on the correct path.

If you run out of bullets or choose not to shoot Andrew in self-defense in the Decay vision, it will lead to a different outcome, because Ashley herself is different. By choosing not to shoot him, Ashley is saying that even in the face of death she wouldn't hurt him. If you get that ending, and then choose to be Andrew rather than Andy, you will get a very different outcome!

I hope you enjoy that route. It's a hell of a ride.

So my thoughts on Episode 3

Cliffhanger route I feel could've used a lot of revision. Andrew going off the deep end as a result of breaking away hard from his sister is an amazing concept. The execution however falls flat because most of it is retreading stuff we knew about him already. I respect the decision to make his life feel extremely isolated and menial through gameplay but I don't agree with the way it was done. Puzzles are extremely obtuse, uninteresting, and take up way too much time compared to the exposition we get in between. Most of these flashbacks don't feel repressed in that they don't feel like things Andy had to forget in order to survive. It lacks a real consequence on Andy's part for trying and so there's no push and pull to his efforts, let alone intrigue. Though it feels like the bulk of 3A is going into whatever Episode 4 is going to be so I hope that's worth it.

Shots and Such was exciting from start to finish. I already posted about it a couple threads ago so I don't wanna repeat all that.

Visions and optional scenes were fantastic on their own while being implemented very well. Non-disruptive, added depth to the characters each time by showing us a new side to them, I can't remember one I didn't like. Making Renee more hateable yet sympathetic at the same time wasn't something I was quite expecting. I also wasn't expecting to feel even worse for killing Douglas where it seemed as though he didn't deserve it.

Game desperately needs a better skip/jump feature like a proper vn would.

All in all despite most of this being criticism, I already gave tons of praise to Shots and Such. So realistically for me, all of Episode 3 turns out to be a solid 8/10 update.

If he was going to be submissive and miserable through his teeth then that could've been a lot of potential for Ashley to ignore his needs at the actual cost of his wellbeing for not speaking out. This could have shown us a side to Ashley that she never had to wrestle with before. And at the same time it might reinforce to Andrew that being submissive without fighting back is how he finally gets what he wants, which could trap them in an endless cycle of her just failing to be competent and him laughing at his impending demise knowing he was right.

This is just the example I thought of off the top of my head. I'm sure there could be more interesting and multi-layered ways to go about the idea if they really thought about it. But the point is that they just stopped where the concept itself begins and it felt a bit like wasted potential that didn't go anywhere or mean anything.

following up on this, apparently Ashley's head dropping from the giant plush in the vision is part of a character sheet, which is animated to move in place and simulate the head coming out and droping. Also theres now a unique sprite for the corpse of the hitman depending on if you chose Shoot or SHOOT! with different amount of bullet holes in them. I still think its weird to put objects in the character sheets given that both can be used in the same layers, but maybe its just for simplicity while animating. Its interesting to see Nemlei's work process from this.

Last addition, everything used in the minigames (the numbers for the math problems, the groceries for the fridge, the progress bars for the gaslighting) are also objects that exist on character sheets to facilitate on screen movement. It's just extremely tragic because these two are horrible stupid fuckups. But even for as twisted and misguided as they are, you can definitely see there's a real passion about the way they care for each other. I unironically hope that in Burial, that Nemlei adds in an optional route where both siblings find someone who genuinely cares for them enough for them to start feeling like they can stop being codependent and actually start being happy and trusting of others.

The entire home life scenario for everyone involved in the family makes me too sad. They don't deserve the redemption but it does make me feel like someone should be there for them to break the cycle in at least one route. Just the idea of someone caring that much for them is something I think everyone deserves to know.

Part of the more subtle tragedy is how Douglass and Renee are more or less Andrew and Ashley. Obviously, they are a "good end" version of them, but the two really are nasty awful people to everyone except each other. The bad influences that each parent has on the other is more subtle (Douglass being spineless in the face of his dad).

I wonder what exactly Nemlei plans to do with Andrew and Ashley's characters, with Andrew in this chapter besides what we already saw in the previous ones she did a whole backstory where she shows that at the beginning he was just a normal kid but because of all the shit he went through at the end he ended up becoming what he is, while with Ashley even though she also puts some bad things like Renee's treatment towards her she goes much less in depth and put her more like someone who was born with something wrong from the beginning.

Yeah I don't think it's realistic to just give them a happy ending out of nowhere. Especially not just because someone happened to both be that altruistic and in the right place at the right time. But I do think there should be a healthy way to break the cycle.

One of my favorite parts of Nemlei's works is that for the most part, there isn't an ideal form of happiness. Some clearly worse than others but none really trying to invalidate the authenticity and emotional depth going into even the most horrible decisions. In truly bad ends there's nothing but regret. In morally-bad ends that aren't ideal, there may be regret for the past, but the choice to stick those endings out is always done without, which makes them feel humane. And with a writer that likes to explore different angles to happiness, I think one of them should be a healthy form of it. One they don't deserve but one they don't need.

On a related note

What's really good about their relationship is that even the idea for it could be just as interesting as Andy and Leyley's dynamic in its own right. And it wouldn't even have to be a repeat of their story despite their kids inheriting their psychological issues. Julia had the heart to care about him but not the capacity. The problem is that Andrew always internalized that no one would love him for being a complacent child-murderer. The kindest possible girl imaginable comes into his life and falls in love with him, but one of the very first things she tells him is that she hopes the absolute worst for the person who killed Nina. He's holding onto an illusory idea of affection at that point because he wishes it was more real than he knows it is.

The tragedy here is that none of the Graves at heart had to be bad people, Andrew included. But no one will believe in him to be good despite that. That faith is performative because everyone is always going to choose his worst at the end of the day, which would make anyone feel resigned to their fate. Especially knowing they would all deny him his innermost feelings to sate something psychologically

Ashley is doing soul things with the demon in Decay where the ??? gets summoned by people, it pulls Ashley over, then Ashley sacrifices the soul of the person who originally summoned ???, and then ??? goes back with Ashley. This is in both routes but in Shots and Such she made a bad deal so she can't quit this job and lives in the human world with Andrew.

In the other route that leads into Episode 4 she still lives with the demon so she doesn't need to summon the demon first to get things rolling. But also Andrew is MIA as of the cliffhanger so Ashley is probably going to have an emotional meltdown.

I think you missed the entire last 20% or more of 3A is Andrew coming to terms with the fact he loves Ashley and has been running from it his whole life, combined with his guilt over Nina and obsession with being normal causing more trouble to Julia and himself than it was worth, creating a dynamic where he's been self defeating from his own emotions and guilt. He even recognized at one point that he is probably the reason why Ashley is the way she is.

No, you get the shit and meh endings first because the game won't give you a satisfying conclusion for straying into what is functionally a distraction from the main route by choosing the wrong options. We get the good stuff in part 2, which will almost certainly include an ending with Andrew and Ashley together and another where they get fucked over even more gloriously than what we've seen so far.

Most people pining for Andrew and Ashley being together would be very happy with an ending like NGN's Yule route.
In any case, Coffin is a far larger project than anything she did before. It also includes a large number of endings. Rehashing death and/or misery ten times over (which is almost certainly going to be once Burial is finished) would be the writing that only a lecturing hack trying to convey a "moral lesson" to the reader could think is good. At minimum, they'll get at least one noticeably better outcome than Shots and Such in both routes.

No, but it was a widespread assumption that Burial would be a more jolly route of the two for the siblings. Hell, even now many who haven't been following the updates closely still believe it. Nemlei really has herself to blame for that with the route naming. The obvious assumption was that Burial refers to burying their old selves and that Decay refers to the decay of their relationship. Only recently we learned that Decay refers to the "moral decay of Andrew Graves". Burial might still mean burying of Andy and Leyley. Or maybe just Leyley because Andy got buried already. Or something else, who knows?

If I really had to guess, the "surprise" that will go down is that Burial will end up with just as much misery potential for the siblings as Decay, but will still allow for a relatively good ending if you make the right choices, like Decay. And thus neither route ends up being truly good or bad.

Before this update, as someone who's also been following the devlogs closely, I would've also been one to tell you that Burial came off as the more "jolly" of the two routes. Namely going by how much more playful Andrew and Ashley are with each other by the end of chapter 2 without being nearly as mad at each other. It's also very hard to imagine how Nemlei would be able to foster character drama when Andrew killing his parents really felt like a sort of "okay I'm locking in to my bullshit now" moment. Like, she'd have to be pretty careful to not cheapen the dynamic by regressing or rehashing their arguments

Whilst all this in depth conversation about their characters is great to read I just want to make the point that having Andrew and Ashley learn to love each other and not end up killing themselves does not cheapen the story or even have to be tacky. They could very well be just as toxic and awful as before but still grow past the 'live fast die young' phase they are currently in without making it seem like a 'happy ending'. Maybe have a Gothic version of the Collyer brothers situation with all it's abhorrent drawbacks extended with the co-dependent incestuous relationship featured in the game growing even worse but still controlled in the isolated environment of some rural house or some other thematic exile.

Nemlei seemed to say something along the lines of “burying ones problems” so perhaps Ashley will attempt to bury her and Andrew’s conflict rather than facing it head on like Andrew seems to do at the end of the Decay (which also said it was his “moral decay”, though the true ending he seemed to have the least - shots and such ending fit this the best).

I think it might be more "The Burial of Leyley" because Decay is "The moral decay of Andrew". The next decay chapter is probably not going to be smooth sailing problem solving.

In fact... it's possible both routes are going to be just 1 of the siblings solving their own problems while the other's persists or gets glossed over. And the all-stars vision is the only possible future where they are both properly fixed in a reality that can't exist properly in the game.

I think the resolution for Episode 4 will be Andrew deciding whether or not to separate the Leyley and Ashley personalities into different people.
The bad route will be him learning the hard way that they are completely different people. He'll kill Leyley while she's passed out and take Ashley. But he'll learn after she recovers that Ashley doesn't have as much love or attachment to him and he's made a mistake.
The good route will be him realizing that it's Ashley as a whole he loves and despite the 2 apparent personalities he can't have what he wants without both.
The joke end will be him deciding to take Leyley after separating their personalities to try and raise her properly. But she's a murdergremlin who becomes one with him by killing him in his sleep and eating him

I wish I could say the same. I think later routes could have puzzles be that degree of challenging but better designed and not take up so much plot. But I didn't like that the puzzles we actually got were so... mediocre? Their demands were inconsistent, figuring them out was inconsistent and just took more trial and error than deduction. Also took up way too much time which wasn't healthy for the story balance. It felt like they got artificially harder to highlight your progress in the game but that really didn't feel necessary.

Holy shit, just spend the last 13 hours playing this incredible, fucked up, insane ass game. I love it so much. Shots and Such is so fucking demented. To be honest it's a little disheartening knowing it maybe the closest we get to a true, "romantic" ending, but I dont care. Nemlei fully delivered. Superior gameplay, writing about on par with first 2 installments, the little bit of fan service included is just enough to bring a smile to your face without it being too much and overly annoying. Coffin episode 3A gets a 9.9/10 from me. Only reason it's not a 100% perfect 10 is because of one retarded puzzle. Though after one play through it's kind of a breeze.

Finally finished Episode 3: Cliffhanger edition

I also did the Andy path because I was surprised it even gave you that option but the results were predictable.
The Andrew path was... I would say rollercoaster of emotions but puzzle games really had me in an headache and genuinely made the game unfun to continue playing. Not because they were hard but because there are so many of them and spread so randomly. As soon as you finish an interesting part of the story, there pops a puzzle game like a fucking ad.
Ignoring puzzle games aside, this wasn't the route I was expecting. It is the romance tragedy I always expected it to be but I thought there'd be more violence or tragedy. As far as I am concerned, it is the part of decay where you realize you fucked up but instead of cutting ties from the decay, you're trying to bend the railroads towards a burial path.

I won't speak anymore until I try the other route, although I have to play the game from start again because my retarded ass didn't save any important save points until ch3

I just think the other chapters were a lot better at balancing the evil ratio between them and the world around them to maintain them as sympathetic. Sure Ashley is a psycho bitch but her backstory is depressing and anything she did post box incident was at least somewhat justifiable. I don't get the line in the S&S route where it says that the Steakhouse doesn't care about Andrew/Carl's English diploma.
Andrew is legally dead so his diploma is worthless anyways. And that also implies he graduated college too but that doesn't seem to be the case anywhere else in the game because it's also revealed he was on an ultimatum to move out willingly when he graduates or get kicked out. BTW I just sound the coffin of I played the chapter 3 and git multiple endings, I enjoyed it however this time around Main duo's personalities felt a bit flanderized, in episode two Andrew was shown that he could be an asshole sometimes but here he's an irredeemable piece of shit and Ashley's brattines has been turned up to eleven, sometimes she acts like a total bitch for no reason and does dumbshit just to create conflict. In the end I just looked up the solution because even if you assume that there aren't supposed to be any duplicates that leaves 5*4*3*2 = 120 possible combinations that you'd have to brute force.

I have the exact opposite view.
The "Cry About It!" update has made it very clear that Renee mistreated her children and that Andrew and Ashley were lusting for each other since the very beginning.
In the Vision Room there is a joke scene that openly mocks the idea of Andrew siding with the parents.
So what I guess happened is that Nemlei anonymously discussed the story of episodes 1 and 2 on the internet, got pissed off at how people were interpreting it, and wrote episode 3 in a way that directly contradicts the interpretations she didn't like.
I don't at all get the same vibe with the incest aspects, if anything it seems to me like episode 3 is the horniest episode yet.
