I think the point of all the chaos and how out of character these two are is cause of episode 2, where neither trust eachother and being absolute insane people neither give a fuck.

Ashley saw a horrible vision where it actually seems plausible to happen, so she's trying to keep things back how they were while Andrew is losing it from his affection for his sister but remembering how hard she makes everything so he's just now saying fuck it.

And once andrew learns of that vision ashley hid, neither are really caring for what happens anymore.

Nemlei said something along the lines of finding the route of all your problems and episode 4 is probably trying to fix them instead of ignoring the chaos that stems from it.

Again they're both completely uncaring anymore with everything broken down between them, no respect from Ashley to andrew along with no help so he isn't gonna care too much about anything like he was before being so used to her antics.
She's fearful of the vision, not wanting shit to go that bad so she's trying to still bring back andy and leyley since that's her own normal for her (which is pretty much causing more shit due to it).

So now it's confront their shitty selves or end up dying/caught this is their ctual state of rot.

I imagine burial might not take super long to create since it won't have flashbacks like decay does, since they're just gonna ignore it all.

Decay having any sort of positive resolution would be fucking bullshit. So what's the idea, to make it so every single decision made towards improving their relationship in episode 2 actually turns out to be useless so that Decay has that arc?

I really don't get it, and at this point the story is just more tiring than intriguing. Remember when we all were excited to see the cult stuff? Guess that's not happening any time soon.

Not likely considering everyone loved Episode 2 on release. The complaints about Decay 3 seem to be pretty clear cut. Too much puzzle, too many time wasters, story is way too chaotic.

The issue is that Nemlei (and then everyone else because of what she said) stressed out multiple times in desperation that Decay is not the chaos route where everything bad happens....only for Decay to be the chaos route where everything bad happens. What was the point of pussyfooting around it so much? Since when has it been a warcrime to make a VN have clear cut routes?

There's some other stuff that are really spotty and weird this episode like the writing in the emotional moments, the puzzles, way too many visions instead of present time moments, but those are more subjective I guess.

She explained a good bit in her qa post anon, it's not a guarantee happy ending for them since neither of these two are the good guys.

The visions are problems heading their way as was explained, either by possibly killing eachother or something plausibly bad is also gonna happen in burial to as they just ignore their problems in that one.

She warned it was gonna be cut off with a cliffhanger on this, we'd probably might find out more in episode 4 with the cult or that's mainly burial side.

This whole storyline makes no sense. They should have just stuck with Julia being a cope/rebound for Ashley. It makes more sense for Andrew while also giving Julia a better role in the story.

That's the fucking opposite of Burial though..? You get episode 2 by literally attacking their problems head on in Episode 2 and forcing Ashley to accept that maybe Andrew has changed. This explination doesn't make sense.

Ill be honest, i liked the episode. Its true that there are *a lot* of puzzles or parts in general that require player input, but i think thats fine. And personally, i like to see what Andrew's inner world looks like, and his connection to you-know-who, so we can have the full picture about his side of the story, which not gonna lie, everything blows major ass from his perspective. But so far, (at least in the route where you stand up for yourself when threatened and insist on Andrew over Andy), it looks like Decay is a lot about Andrew coming to terms with the fact that he does want his sister, despite how much she annoys him.

We all know that, we all understood that, and we all read Nemlei's posts. The thing that doesn't add up is why go through all this trouble to stop the routes from being clear cut? You can have both routes end with complicated situations that aren't happy endings but make the routes themselves make sense. Right now, nothing that is happening in Decay feels like its directly related to Ashley's decision in Episode 2 or that its something very specific to Decay, or that Decay even has its own identity as a route. Its just a bunch of intense moments, Andrew acting extremely edgy and weird regardless of your options, and wayyyyyyyyy too many flashbacks.

Andrew lied. People died. Lord Unknown made a pact with Andrew because he was a "grime soul" aka tar soul to hatch. A quick scene seems to suggest tar souls can become demons.
??? is autistically playing Ashley against Andrew because it sees a future where Andrew cuts their contact with ??? and doesn't believe Ashley when she says that he's not trying to kill her.

Lord Unknown shows up when the demon starts playing Andrew hoping he'd fail a contract and ??? could deal with the problem itself. Lord unknown starts digging into Andrews memories which pretty much come back incest and "Juliacels lost"

What do you mean? They're both at their worst right now after those events cause neither are wanting to actually open up to the other cause one (ashley) is still scared the good amount of the episode of losing her brother from the vision or the demons threats
Andrew is currently going through hell with loving his sister but so fucking done with how she just doesn't stop her bullshit.

They're gonna act out of character here, I'm not sure how this is so surprising to people.

In Burial, Episode 2, Andrew steps up when left alone and decides to stand up for Ashley in front of their awful mom, WHILE also standing up to Ashley and telling her that its not okay for them to be stuck in the past and that they should forget Andy and Leyley and be Andrew and Ashley, and be better to one another. That's literally how BURIAL ends.

In Decay, none of this happens, Andrew lets Ashley walk all over him and they don't talk about anything meanwhile Ashley dreams Andrew is gonna kill him because she knows she upset him. Now in Episode 3, the entire present time of the episode is Andrew starting to abuse Ashley back or completely giving up to her, with none of it being about the two talking about their relationship or "figuring stuff out", they just go on.

Literally nothing about Decay is them facing their issues and everything about Burial was, so in that context, nothing in Decay makes any sense.

Decay Andrew is just bad edgy fanfiction. The entire deal with Andrew before was that he has these bits where he's aware of people's emotions and he doesn't necesarrily want to be vile to people, he'd rather avoid it. They're letting stuff be seen out this episode but haven't went to fix it between eachother just yet.

I hope you're right, but I'm not getting the impression at all that this isn't mean to be taken as canon. I feel so fucking weird about this episode. It must have been written last year at the latest, close to Episode 2, so what the fuck happened with the writing? The Andy diaries at the start were so fucking good and impactful, but everything after is the siblings having the same argument over and over. Andrew feels like Nemlei trying to hammer in that he's not the victim by making him a bigger piece of shit, but in a way inconsistent with his previous character. I love the banter, but their arguments achieve nothing every time. Really mixed feelings so far.

Holy shit. So, I got the Leyley route first. I just finished the Andrew route. A lot of shit to process. For 1: HOLY SHIT, HE PEAKS AT HER IN THE SHOWER!? 2: The ending very much confuses me, so he's going to work with Lord Unknown to stop, "feeling these feelings". 5.5 hours later, and I'm finally done
That was really good, haters are absolutely tasteless. Some of the puzzles were annoying, but overall it was fun. I enjoyed the shift from VN to puzzle game, but I'm also someone who loves puzzles. Narratively, I enjoyed the deep dive into Andrew's mind, which is obviously the focus of the whole chapter. I find Andrew to be extremely relatable. Whenever I play Coffin outright, I find I always take his side, and it's only after I think more about it that I come to terms with Ashley. This time, I really related to Andy/Andrew's struggles with difficult parents. Somehow, this fucking game always manages to hit me when I'm at a moment of personal change. For the past week, I've been thinking about the parts of my upbringing that left me with issues, and it's a lot of what Andrew went though. Never being able to confide in your parents, always feeling inferior, becoming a yes-man just because it's easier than being honest. That feeling of just giving up on being a real person.
I thought a lot about Fake Plastic Trees by Radiohead. To me, I think Andrew is trying to become a fake plastic person, but is unable to (since nobody really is). I think it's why the second part of the chapter features Julia so heavily. Andrew WANTS to be a normalbot 9000 who has a normal gf. He wants to be a cookie cutter person who doesn't have night terrors. However, it's just not possible. A combination of choices and circumstances put him in a position where he just can't avoid his facade crumbling down.
IMO, Chapter 3 is all about Andrew struggling with that. We spend so much time in his mind because Andrew has not accepted becoming Andrew. Part of him still clings to Andy. Andy is a good kid, Andrew is a bad man. Andrew doesn't want to be Andy anymore, but Andrew isn't exactly a person worth becoming.

While I understand why some anons are annoyed by the repeated conversations, I find that those are the point of the episode. Maybe it's because I actually have a sister, but those moments where you ask a simple question and it spirals into a fight are things that actually happen. It's a well written relationship that's falling apart. Simple things are misinterpreted because the other person enters the conversation on the defensive. Andrew accepting he's fucked up and unwell happened already in Episode 2....Burial. Not Decay, and even if it happened in Decay, it still makes zero sense. There's an entire huge line between being fucked up to the people you know and you have connections to which fuel you desire to lash out, and just randomly starting to kill innocent people, and Andrew was nowhere near in hell to crossing that line.

Andrew unironically has the serial killer mentality. He justifies his killings by "putting he choice" in the hands of someone or something else. For Anton Chigurh, it was flipping a coin. Same thing I have an issue with.
I like the elements by themselves but I miss episode 1 and 2 when Coffin was more character drama in a fucked up present world with some satanic/demonic elements. In Decay it seems like literally everything revolves around demonic stuff and Andrew and Ashley being literal comic book level villains that kill anyone and everyone and have zero empathy left in them. It's such a sudden fucking change to from Episode 2 where especially Andrew was not happy at all about how things degenerated.

NTA but I feel like that's more a necessity of how the story and gameplay kinda have to progress. Nemlei already broke with the visual novel format in the last two chapters by having the player walk around and do stuff. Now we're in the demon realm in order to examine Andrew's memories, but the player still has to do stuff. So it necessarily becomes solving demon puzzles and whatnot.
But I get where you're coming from. There really isn't much time spent in the present.

Nemlei spent 3 steam posts telling people that "guysss decay isn't the bad route! pls trust me" and now we all now that in fact it is very much the shock value route.

Her previous steam posts were also not so subtly telling people that she was gonna focus on making something for the hardcore mystery lovers and not the morally dubious incest bros like us, and since that mystery community tends to be anti taboo relationships, it's pretty much GG.

Decay has and is gonna keep having incest stuff but with them not panning out fully and Nemlei beating you over the head about how bad it is, and Burial is probably gonna have none of it after that dream.

Honestly only bits I liked was the beginning with Andy so we can see how awful it was being him back then and the highschool flashback stuff. Everything else felt like edgy fanfic shit to me. Andrew going full murder crazy, him starting a sexual relationship with Ashley that involved him beating her to get off, the demon stuff is starting to make less and less sense, the general dialogue is a bit all over the place.

It wasn't like, totally bad but its still a lowpoint compared to episodes 1 and 2. I hope its gonna be the only lowpoint.

This episode made me fully hate the two. I previously thought that Burial Andrew would maybe change for the better in the sense that he'll really start trying to improve stuff for the two of them and not just be these walking death signs but this episode showed he stopped doing that a long time ago. You know what else is stupid? Splitting the route that was already a split off into more split offs and tying those to the smallest most unimportant shit so that no one even knows why they get the ending they do and where the story is going.

This is exactly what I didn't want Coffin to become, another western VN that just has a bunch of fractures and splits for the sake of it to the point that the story makes no sense anymore.

It's like a vn with a ladder style of story progression.
You can step away at certain branches for a short route with its own endings but at the end of the day you need to keep going up until you reach the real ending.

well i chose andrew route, killed the family nad hopped into portal, then in the realm-in-between andrew started chasing ashley wanting to kill her
the first room was the same one Ashley was in in the ch2 ending vision on decay route
after some puzzle rooms Ashley gets to a dead end where you have to catch her and if you it in time you kill her

Episode 2 has the obvious Burial/Decay choice
It also has the shoot/ SHOOT!! choice
If you do shoot + decay you can get an option when in the dream to kill or not kill Andrew
If you don't kill him you can get the true ending that leads to episode 4 by picking Andrew instead of Andy in episode 3
If you do kill him you can get the Shots and Such ending by picking Andrew instead of Andy in episode 3

As someone who was concerned by how wonky the camp scene was, I am pleased to have been impressed by the chapter 4 cliffhanger. It is evident that this was where the bulk and passion of the chapter went to, and I am so happy to say that the tonal issues of being too comedic or overcorrecting into being too melodramatic was not present here. It stook the landing I'd say, although gripes about how much puzzling and perhaps too many flashbacks are there. I was always on the fence about how much exposition and background info their ought to have been in this chapter, and although I was ultimately fine with it- I can see why the last hour or so being just pure background exposition of Andrew and Ashley's life without any cuts to present events would annoy some. All in all, while the other routes probably suffer genuine issues in terms of their scripts, the core of the chapter nonetheless lived up to the hype. It is worthy of being alongside chapter 1 and 2.

I finished earlier and got the good "proper" ending that leads to Episode 4 (and the Cops Win end along the way lmao.) I kind of expected talking about it so much in this thread would desensitize me but Nemlei continues to inflict massive psychic damage. I can't reconcile my sympathy for the siblings with the knowledge they fully deserve the hell they create for themselves. I've got no words about Julia. It is a bit unpolished in places but this was well worth the wait, even though it made me feel absolutely miserable.

I don't think the exposition was wasted time but it could probably have been either condensed or organized a bit better. As someone who picked up from an old sage at the end of Episode 2 I think it broke up the "present day" action a little too much, although maybe it flows better if you've been playing through from the start.

Just finished Shots and Such, and it made me sick to my stomach. I know it's the realistic outcome when they refuse to solve their problems, but holy fuck, watching them beat each other senseless and have joyless obligation sex makes me feel depressed and helpless. I am of the opinion that Burial will have the last star so playing both routes and getting all the secrets will provide a "True" ending of sorts that is the most idealized extreme of their relationship, presenting outside of the story itself because it's not really attainable in context. eg Incest Family arc.

I think Decay3 is Andrew losing to his dark side, Decay4 is numbing himself to the guilt he feels about it via demonic lobotomy, and Burial will be him embracing it without losing control.

You chop up the ashley bunny and put the choker on "Andrew's Wife". He laughs and jokes about how funny it is but eventually the reality sets in and he starts feeling ashamed of himself as reality sets in. The screen fades to black and the Andrew mannequin on the cake gives you a star on the solid black screen.

Gotta go to sleep and I don't wanna type out my thoughts in full because I'm tired from playing Episode 3A all day. I'll try my best to summarize them before bed however

>Andrew's introspective adventures sucked. Lots of obtuse, unintuitive puzzles that kill the pacing with how little development there is in between each one
>Momentum in this route falls off hard after they reach the demon's home. None of the exposition after that point is interesting because none of it adds depth to his character. All the info in that sense was info we already knew and so his mental adventures just come off as self-appointed misery porn

3/10. I hope the setup for Episode 4 is worth it. That said

>Decay abuse adventures ruled
>Exact same breakneck pacing as Episodes 1 and 2. Puzzles serve as necessary breaks for pacing instead of being pointless time wasters that overshadow the story they're meant to serve
>All sorts of unexpected developments that explore the characters in new, interesting angles that constantly expand on the exact limits of their tolerance
>Makes the best of the opportunities only a route like this can have
>The extremely twisted affections the main siblings have for each other can still be seen despite how far it regresses deeper into their abusive tendencies, which makes even the ugliness still feel very human. The experience of watching them degenerate over time felt as morbid as it was exciting and heartbreaking

10/10 couldn't have asked for this route to be handled better

I was almost going to leave a scathing review after finishing my first run. Glad the other route was so much better and saved my impressions. I'm still skeptical about how that route will continue into episode 4 but it wasn't all bad so I still have reason to believe in Nemlei.

I was actually surprised how hard decay went with goth sister incest when that was only a real factor in the burial side of part 2 (plus it included the warning will it's super in your face in part 3 with no remorse)

I would have liked Friend B to make more of an effort to help Andrew. He genuinely cares and is seemingly a good guy, but I guess he does have a job and other obligations and doesn't know the full picture. I think a lot of Andrew's problems and ghastly behaviour in this route stems from the fact that he has nobody to talk to besides Ashley and Julia, and is suffocated from the hopelessness of his situation, which brings out the worst in him.

I don't know is sociopath is the right word, but he tells Ashley he "doesn't care about anyone." My impression is that Andrew fundamentally lacks the capacity to care about anyone other than himself and Ashley, even if he really tries. It's tragic that a friend is exactly what he needs, but that he can't really have one without using them because of his nature. Andrew and Ashley struggle to care for each other selflessly, and they're each other's whole world.

Yeah, he desparately needs to be honest in front of someone other than Ashley. Even if they couldn't maintain a real friendship, I think B's sane/outsider POV could have genuinely helped Andrew get some perspective, even for just a minute.
