Yeah, I am sure FS is going to totally change their next game which has been in development for years because of the success of a spin off. Get real. It would have to get insane critical acclaim matching or above that of ER plus just as much financial success for them to change it based on that. In reality the game will score in the 80s (at best) on metacritic, have a decent sized playerbase for a month, then slowly die off and the next game will continue the current trajectory that they were already on.

There is no reason for it to exist. People just talk about Dark Souls in here. The current iteration of /drg/ is filled with genuine (and I mean that) schizo /qa/ type posters who are obsessed over names that no one knows and they just genuinely spam and say completely off the wall things. If you want to talk about Dark Souls just do it in here and people are generally happy to do it. Last thread we had a great discussion about DS1 and how it has aged both poorly and really well in different aspects.

Doing my first quality build for elden ring. Haven't done one since DaS1 (when I didn't even know what a quality build was). I have been going through the game solo with no ashes to make it more challenging. Last night I beat Morgott for the first time solo and today I beat Mohg, lord of blood solo for the first time without ashes. Both very enjoyable fights. Quality has been a blast, I have a ton of different weapons to play with for any situation

yeah that's the one good thing about quality. it's a shame that the dedicated infusion isn't very viable until you're incredibly overleveled. even the pre-dlc buff wasn't enough.

I wanna replay ER and I am not really sure what I want to do. I mentioned it before and got a few suggestions they were appreciated.
I've played two builds, one vanilla and one for SotE. First was a sorcery build before we all knew it was OP. Second was a STR build utilizing two great hammers to just stunlock bosses with jumping attacks.

So I wanna do something that is not one of those two. I just wanna base it around fun weapon(s) with cool movesets or really sick ashes of war. If I can get the weapon at a reasonable time in the game and slowly upgrade it then that would be even better. I don't wanna memerush the game and get myself a maxed out weapon in an hour and then sleep through the bosses, I kind of want it to feel like a normal-ish playthrough, but I am totally cool with bending it to go grab the weapon as soon as it is reasonably obtainable.
Anyone got any ideas?

That is my only real issue with quality builds. It would be awesome to switch weapons often depending upon the terrain, boss, environment, etc but upgrades are so powerful that you really cannot sit there and upgrade more than like 2 or 3 weapons. I almost wish upgrades were transferable in some way but that would really trivialize the game by making you not have to think about your limited resources.

I enjoy it a lot
You get an item early on in the first boss area that lets you stealth when necessary and I have a blast implementing it
Nothing like shooting a heavily armored enemy from behind with a magic arrow then running behind a corner to disguise myself so he feels like a schizo when he shows up to punish me

INT might be the strongest 'pure' build in the game. Hybrids will always be king due to soft caps on stat scaling and combining buffs with stats, but INT is very, very good. Sorcerery can struggle at the start due to not having many good spells and a lack of FP, but once you get some decent items, talismans, and spells you'll see that your power scales really hard really fast.

Are there any weapons in particular that stick out for a Dex/Fai build or am I just taking a random weapon and putting lightning on it?
STR/FAI is obviously the paladin archetype/fantasy so I am curious what DEX/FAI would be.

Yea I have had to spend tons of runes for upgrades. Getting upgraded to "good enough for now" is easy with miner bell bearings though. Just takes away runes I could be using to level up but thats ok with me

I recommend an arcane build.
There are plenty of fun weapons in the base game that you can get somewhat early like Reduvia, Eleonora, Regalia of Eochaid and Bloody Helice.
You can go for a weapon + offhand shield playstyle and try things like parries and guard counters or even shield poking, medium shields are really strong now so you don't need a STR build to use those effectively.
Also if you level FTH up to only 15, or even just equip the heirloom talisman, you'll be able to use a lot of incantations with the Dragon Communion seal and deal decent damage with them.

It's a really interesting build that isn't very stat heavy.

I really don't know how you guys actually consistently do PvP. Nearly every time I try it is a terrible experience of phantom hitboxes, teleport backstabs, extendo weapons, etc. I have pretty decent internet and live in the US so you'd think it wouldn't be a bad experience but it so often is.

Arcane kind of has a bad reputation I guess, but fuck it if its for me. I did see there was an art of war that basically lets you kick a motherfucker and explode them if they are poisoned or scarlet rotted. I am sure that could be combined with bleed since they all are effected by arcane, right?

I think my issue is just the inconsistency. It is complete cope to say this, but it is weird when it feels like the vast majority of the time the connection fuckery benefits the other player rather than me. I have definitely gotten in hits that were total BS, but most of the time it is me getting hit when I am noticeably out of the opponents range. Maybe they're just more experienced with lag and as such are attacking when they know it might hit and I keep acting like it is offline street fighter or something.

How do people play this game without back buttons? Frankly, it's kind of insane From expects people to put up with their stupid dpad item selection by default. Taking your thumb off the left stick is always a bad idea, especially to cycle through a dozen items because your control scheme is so out of date it doesn't even use selection wheels. Having to cycle is automatically bad, but at least if you can reassign it to face buttons (and reassign the facebuttons to the dpad, then map them to the back buttons) you can do it while still moving.

Yeah, I got a Vader 4 Pro for PoE2, but I recently went back and played ER and after setting up the back buttons for it I literally cannot go back. It is so dumb they expect you to hold B to sprint while taking your thumb off of the fucking stick to move the camera, as if I don't wanna look around as I run.

It's kind of clunky compared to focusing on just one stat but you can do it.
Basically just infuse a weapon that already has bleed with poison, or one that already has poison with bleed, and Arcane will scale both statuses.
And yeah, that poison kick ash is awesome.

Maybe I'll try to do that then. Proc scarlet rot or poison, then kick them and they explode all while I am bleeding them. You can combine it with the charm that gives you damage against poisoned enemies, the hat that buffs you when you poison enemies, and then mohg's rune that gives you damage if they bleed, right? They'd all stack?
Could actually be a genuinely decent build, probably not as good as pure bleed but I just wanna kick mfers now.

I play with my right index finger on the buttons and cycle items with my right thumb, so it only stops me from moving the camera for a split second rather than my directional movement.

They're solid for coop on fast weapons like dual SS.

But recently I've found that they really shine on Smithscript Daggers, even for duels.
People who try to play passive against the daggers or use shields get utterly fucked because it means constant regen even from blocked or phantom hits.

It's just the perfect weapon for combo stuff because it emits a constant stream of dual wield hits from a safe range.

I feel like an issue with ER is how OP the player can get. Enemies and bosses have amazing moves and even fighting something like a Crucible Knight while underleveled is a better bossfight than 90% of the stuff in previous Souls games. Once your build is online you have so much overpowered bullshit the only way for them to make a challenge is have something like Consort Radhan.

I did a couple things today. One is I got over my autism about maintaining the unity of the dpad and remapped the incant and item cycling to triangle and circle so I can do it while moving. I have no idea why I insisted on compensating by only using two items or spells at a time + the pouch slots other than it felt "wrong" to separate the spell and item cycling from the weapon swapping since the UI implies they're all supposed to be on the dpad.

The second is that I solved the problem of the short duration for the black flame buff by putting double slash on my claymore. It was that or switch to a smaller, faster weapon, which I could do, but I like this thing too much, and I hate how little damage smaller swords do.

I know this is not the thread but because the other one is ded this will do. I just finished DS1 as my first souls game, can I skip to DS3 or I need to do DS2? sotfs is the most different of all the souls games. it uses a different engine and has an oddly weightless quality to its combat. it is still a decent game and i like it. for what it's worth, it has access to hexes which is arguably the most interesting school of magic the franchise has ever had.

just make sure you have good Agility (secondary stat, something around 99, ideally you want 105 for the same 13 iframes as all the other souls games)

The helm sucks, no complain otherwise.
For anyone like me who love the set but share the same feeling about the Knight Helm: use the Raging Wolf Helm and Mausoleum Knight Greaves instead. The Raging Wolf Helm looks fantastic on the Knight Set, and the Mausoleum Knight Greaves are for keeping 51 poise and doesn't break the colour scheme or look out of place.

How can future Souls games avoid the problem that DS1/2/3/BB/ES all have?
Which is to say: After you get past a certain point and have your weapon fully upgraded you just start running past most items and loot and exploration becomes pointless? Every time I have played a Souls game the last ~33% usually becomes a get from point A to B as quickly as possible even when playing blind because if I find some cool weapon when the game is 90% over then I am not gonna farm materials to fully upgrade it and switch my build around.
I think the only real way to do it is to have post-game content but I honestly think that is kinda gay and doesn't fit in a Souls game. None of the DLC has been "post game" style content even if it is harder than the base game, it is still generally accessible from the mid game.

they need to add far more weapons per class, and far more unique ones with unique effects/skills and move sets. that way you'll probably want to switch each play-through unless it's just doing a one weapon deal.

~6 thrusting swords with most of them sharing the same moves and effects (ashes) is quite limited when you could have 20+.

Alternatively they maybe should make a way of transferring upgrades to other weapons. Maybe through a literal sacrifice of your old weapon or some kind of hefty rune cost or limited consumable. DS2, for example, shits upgrade materials at you and you can fully upgrade as many weapons as you want with a few bonfire ascetics. In the other games it requires some insane grinding or you just get like 3-4 of the last upgrade mats and that is it.
If you could fully upgrade like 4-5 weapons (that would involve doing side quests, bosses, exploration, etc) but then also get 4-5 upgrade transfer materials you could actually find a late game weapon and swap to it, but you're not making it to the late game without having fully upgraded a weapon.

that thrusting sword example would be 20+ quality/unique weapons rather than 4 mostly the same and a few unique. it'd take more time for them to balance out the move sets so the dps is in line with what they want, but that's not too much of an issue. and have several from each category locked behind a hard and unique boss (many of which aren't remembrances), invaders or on ng+.

and you can do the same for armors, spells/incants, talismans and so on.

One issue though is that Fromsoft seems to think that "unique" now means some kind of weird dancy moveset where your character flies and flips around. I think like all of the SotE weapons are like that.

Honestly anything short of ER2 is gonna disappoint a lot of people. It would be hard to go back to Dark Souls after an actual open world. I think that a DS4 with the lessons learned from 3/ER could be really awesome but I think that people just want ER again (again).

I have thoughts but no one cares. Overall pretty fun but janky. Looking forward to DS3 and then replaying Elden Ring (so yes this is on topic). I wonder if having the context for the rest of the series will make ER even better. I already can see the inspiration and references that ER had that went over my head.

I think the game is weird because most of the difficulty came from what I felt like were bullshit gank squads and AI that was either INCREDIBLY aggressive or outright retarded. They went out of their way to just make annoying encounters instead of challenging ones a lot of the time. Some of the hitboxes were bad but DS1 had some janky hitboxes too, frankly.
Bonfire Aesthetics and changes to NG+ versions of areas is a brilliant idea and I don't know why they were abandoned.
The game seemed to have a pretty good upgrade economy but is ruined by the DLC. You can go to the DLCs kinda early and just run past enemies and every other chest has 3 twinkling and 3 dragon things (I did not do this)
Some of the bosses were cool, others were covetous demon (who gets reused in a DLC lmao). I felt like they didn't need to have as many bosses as they did.
The animations were weird. Some are really goddamn smooth like the player's roll, parry/ripostes, backstabs, and some boss attacks. Other bosses look outright bad. Lost Sinner and Fulgur Knight (or w/e his name is) come to mind. Their swings lack any and all impact and weight.
Power Stancing is a great idea but I ended up not using it for long due to the insane stamina requirements. Two handing a katana felt more effective than power stancing them.
The invasions were kinda BS but I like them. The summon signs and invasions meant even in a relatively dead game it still kinda felt like you got the Souls experience. The person in the DLC who waits for you to open a chest then pops out, backstabs you, then emotes is fucking hilarious.

Overall it definitely feels like it was not made by the original DS1 team and had a lot of weird ideas, some good, some bad, and some just jank. It was cool that there were so many weapons, armors, spells and shit though.

I don't know if it counts, but doing Lost Sinner in NG+ early onto get the Chaos Blade (after my friend gave me a hint about doing it) kicked my ass a lot.
Royal Rat Authority probably killed me the most but I don't even know if that fucking counts. It is JUST the stupid little toxic dogs that would toxic me in 2 hits. The Katana has a HORRIBLE, HORRIBLE, HORRIBLE hitbox for smaller enemies. I couldn't even fucking hit crystal lizards with it and would have to just shoot them with a bow. I'd just get instantly toxic'd 90% of the time and the fight was over.
Boss itself that was the hardest might have been Blue Smelter Demon for me. It was a combination of the boss being hard and also the fucking runback.

Favorite boss I think was Sir Alonne or Sinh. Alonne's runback was also horrible but I beat him on my 2nd try and it was a close fight.

Just finished up my divine beast run at RL 130. This build turned out really wild and fun. Dragonclaw and beastclaw are both quality weapons so I went 40/40 str/dex and got all the deathroot to get all the beast incantations.

There for 20fth users honestly. The only spells you'll use are beast hp regen, rock sling, and the bear roar. Those are all you need though, the claw spread attack is on the beastclaw hammer and the self aoe ground claws are obsoleted by the bear roar.

if you are okay with scrappy newgrounds artstyle and 2d, then salt and sanctuary.
at its core it feels someone just smushed dark souls into a 2d platformer
magic is good, miracles r good, str is good, dex is good, shields are good, poison is good if you're playing enhanced mode (rebalance mode included in the game)
you can parry with any weapons in the game, even crossbow, bow and gunparry like in bloodborne
a bunch of diff weapons with unique combos-- u might have to google because some of them require up and down inputs iirc, but they're pretty simple. usually like light light heavy attack
charged light and heavy attacks
offhand gun/crossbow/wand have special combo with mainhanding a small weapon, has a built in backstep dodge
weapons within the same class have different attack speeds and other modifiers-- and u can edit these a bit with charms u can attach to weapons. and some weapons are just completely unique to their class
lots of different enemies
unique hub and warp system
unique but simple magic system that rewards you for swapping between 2 types of spells
covenants that give massive benefits
transmutation system to get boss weapons and other unique gear

hitting stuff feels responsive and chunky

Is there a reason to not just kill Alexander when you first see him? I mean you lose 5% damage but you get to use the talisman for the entire game. Otherwise you need to wait until damn near the end of the game. I guess you could use it for the DLC, but even then you still get to use it for so much longer if you kill him.

It's the same thing as Millicent's Prosthesis. Just fucking kill her. You lose out on 2% damage, gain +5 Dex, and can use it for like 90% of the game instead of right near the end. It's pointless and ultimately bricks your character for PVP, which is the place where the burst damage increase from Alexander's matters the most.

For PVE you can just stick with Soreseal + Heirlooms + Estus recovery increase and then eventually swap the seal for talismans that increase your defenses and basically outperform any other setup.

If you really want to spam L2 just equip the Carian Filigreed, that can be obtained much earlier.
