>>519722043>>519720967>>519720510Not to sound like a fag (I do) but DS1 was just legitimately intimidating. Going around the world always had a feeling of unease to it. Everything was so strange and weird. Enemies could be aggressive or sometimes passive or territorial. It felt like there were secrets everywhere. Some of the secrets good, some of them traps or enemies. I remember when I found the hydra in the forest for the first time I just fucking ran away, I was like "There is no way I can defeat an enemy of this size."
When I found the Ash Lake (and the Hyrda within) I legitimately felt some amount of fear when exploring it. It is such a surreal and dreamlike place, or more like nightmarish. Then at the end is just a giant, unkillable dragon that you can pray to.
DS1 has an atmosphere, feeling, "vibe", or whatever vague buzzword you want to use, that is pretty unmatched in all of gaming. It took the mechanics of Demon Souls but put them into a semi-open world (That is a series of interconnected levels) and came out at the perfect time. There was enough internet discourse to talk about the game but the world had yet to become so cynical that people were just dismissing everything. Eventually the memes and lore videos came which is fine, but for a while there it was a pretty magical experience.
Also, it is safe to say that DS2/3/ER never got the chance to recapture those feelings because at that point everyone understood Souls. I no longer get intimidated by large enemies or hidden locations. I am just too used to it by now. Not to mention DS2/3/ER are certainly more gamified and less abstract. In many ways they are better games but lesser experiences.
