i dont think those games are addicting, it's the combo of being pushed by streamers (social fomo) and an extremely low IQ gameloop since RNG does most of the work (see: balatroon, vampire shartvivors, etc)
basically they're autoplay games pushed by streamers

there is another crap kind of "addicting". when a game makes you lose slowly by restricting what you can do or and having the algorithms make you slowly lose, like a turn based game and the AI has different scaling per turn, leaves you feeling "if only i was a bit more optimize i could have won, better start over" again and again just wasting time with a game that isn't even fun anymore. think 4x games, excel spreadsheet games (hearts of iron, city gamedev tycoon, etc)

and then there is a more wholesome "addicting" which is like the guy said, learning. but it doesn't have to be real life facts or game mechanics, it can be story facts such as a well written VN on the first playthrough that has points you reach that changes the meaning of previous things you were wondering about, like a conspiracy you slowly unravel. I only like VNs that are very terse and have rapid plot development, otherwise its boring walls of text i just skip through. but you go from "hmm, i wonder what this game is like, i will play it for 15minutes and find out" to being 3 hours later and halfway through the story and only stop because the game crashed and you got no savefiles. also it is good if the game presents you with a challenge and no clear way to solve it and you think "how am i supposed to do this" but then you go "i bet you have to go here and then do this" and that you are right some of the time and sometimes they put that there as a ploy and you discover it works a different way. you get rewarded for paying attention and thinking strategically but sometimes you get shown that it isn't as easy and straightforward as you might think which keeps you from getting bored due to too easy. so in a VN this can be a character is on the run and you are chasing them and you have an overworld and each place to visit advances time and there is 3 places to visit before night and it is too late and there are 6 choices. and your knowledge lets you correctly guess. stuff like that.

Basic navmesh navigation is built into godot, state machines using enumerators aren't hard to write, just hard to keep track of.

So like i said, look up a tutorial on using the navmesh node and navigation agent. To properly use it though you will have to use multithreading when you ask the navigation server for a path and then use your own steering instead of the nav agent. Reason being that the navigation server locks up the main game loop and causes stuttering when you don't use multithreading. As for the state machine, basically use an enumerator for the states and then use a match statement for the enumerator and in the match statement have conditions for switching states. I can't help more than this right now.

Godot has very simple multithreading built in using the workerthreadpool singleton, basically you give it a function to run and make sure the result gets put into a variable in the script calling it. Every cycle you check the variable to see if the result is there or not and when it is you 'recall' the worker thread to free up memory. Takes a bit of playing around to get working right and to make sure all variables are reset for the next time you need to get a new path.

Still working on getting all the kinks out of the combat system, fixed a major glitch that was causing NPCs to not move every other but after completely rewriting everything I've slightly broken their attack code, fun times, ranged doesn't work at all now. And as you can see in the webm moving away from a melee attacker soft locks the game. More stuff to work on tomorrow

I had this problem until I realized the hundreds of hours I spent with a character I made was basically gone after I put the game down. I wanted some kind of game where I could create a character, story, world, enemies, etc. and keep it around. I started looking into digital D&D games where I could create custom campaigns or something but realized what I was trying to do was make my own game essentially so I got back into gamedev
Now that I've gotten better it actually pays off. It starts to feel like a game itself but even better because its something youre making and not just consooming.
As for the guilt aspect when you do decide to play another game. Best to just let the feeling go. You sometimes need a break and to see some other work out there to get ideas, inspo, etc. so take some time to enjoy it

I've been making a survival horror game where your main mode of defense requires you to care for it like a pet Tamagotchi (lest it end you).

Been drinking from the fire hose for a while since I only started learning game dev stuff (coding, modeling, etc.) near the middle of last year. Definitely the one of the most fun and satisfying things.

Hope you guys are doing well on your own projects. I'd like to make more indie game friends as I carry along; most of the people I know that dabble in the creative are just artists (which is fine, of course, but I don't really talk to anyone else who works on games and that can be kind of lonely).

If for nothing else, you can check out the progress of the other devs without having to scroll through a ton of retarded screeching, politics, grifting, and wannabe business advice. You can be inspired that these bastards are working on their game, so why don't you? You can also set yourself reminders. If you have the discord rot and it is basically always open in a tab when you are online, it can be actually useful. Sometimes you might even get actual advice.

Oekaki is just art without anti-aliasing, the art in the webm is high res but it's still undeniably pixel art in the way it's drawn. If you actually look at the sprites for Dead Cells you can see how messy they actually are, there is no way you can get such detailed art with a technique like that. There is a reason why the NPCs in that game have such a different artstyle since those are actually traditionally drawn pixel art instead of just being 3d models turned into sprites.

The "sprites" in that anime video are rendered at like 1024x1024 and are very simple models to begin with

You still don't get art of such quality regardless of model quality and sprite resolution. Companies like SNK and ArcSys/French Bread have used a similar technique for most of their 2d fighting games and that shit is not fast or easy at all since they still have to touch up every single frame manually or it just looks like shit.

I had an epiphany lately as to why the process of uploading a build to Steam for the first time is so convoluted compared to itchio that allows you to simply press the "upload" button.

It's intentionally like that to filter out the... well, just look at the most recent tab on itchio. Steam doesn't want its website to look like itchio which has essentially no content moderation and looks like a gas station toilet.

That workflow was only used for KoF 12 and 13, they even showcase a comparison to the spritework of the previous games which used more traditional spriting.
But despite how good the new sprites looked, that workflow is likely a big reason for the downfall of the series because it was so expensive to produce yet didn't really result in better sales for the company.

Well. Maybe ultrawide is useful for some people, but as far as 16:9 being super restricted for multitasking, maybe you're just bad at organizing. Do you unironically use a disorganized alt+tab style workflow? Virtual Desktops have been a thing on every operating system for years now, and it's very simple to dedicate each desktop to a single program and just swipe between them.

I never even needed a second monitor. I had one for a while, but got rid of it because it was pointless.

(i.e. "it's not fun", "the shooting feels bad", etc) Gamedevs can actually explain what they're talking about. So a place like Itch.io that has a huge percentage of game developers is the place to go for feedback especially early on. You just need to be able to parse feedback that is in line with your game's intentions and not fall for the constant idea guying that devs do.

This is correct, however there are some problems with this approach.
There is a phenomenon of channels that download 100 itchio games per day so they can spam their videos on the site and get some traffic for their channels. You're not going to get quality feedback or glean anything important from watching them play, especially if you're making a slower and story-driven kind of game. They'll just rush through everything and click out after 10 minutes because they have to get to the next game.

On another note, I feel that itchio is not a good fit for games that are trying to be anything more than a quick and forgettable arcade-y experience.

No idea. This was the only thing I saved from him. It had fluid looking top-down combat, with a chibi proportions main character kinda like yours which is why I asked. Though in his case it seems he used a pixelation shader.
