I got to Field Marshall which always surprised me
But then when I went back and checked, I realized a HUGE percentage of my play time across all the Bungie Halos was in custom games, be they online or split screen/system link.
That will always be the core Halo experience to me.
We should have another Halo fest

By Halo standards at least I'm inclined to agree. There's so many aspects of the game that are just such a fucking mess.
Nobldy even remembers or talks about this anymore but the fucking dynamic resolution bull crap they pulled just to get the poor xbone to chug along a consistent 60 fps was some of the worst visual compromise development I've ever seen in a video game. You'd be looking around at a Vista in full HD, and then after some Prometheans started shooting at you, the rocks around you would suddenly look like something out of a PS2 launch title. If anything that's the biggest shame about the campaign not getting released on PC, because to date there's no way to experience a good-looking version of the singleplayer.

5's campaign was flawed, but the moment-to-moment gameplay was alright. It fell apart whenever there was a cutscene, or a boss battle, or a walking level.

Any time prometheans are the enemy it's the most insufferable Halo gameplay I've ever dealt with, because almost all their weapons auto track and the game uses having always 4 players to justify overloading the map with hostile AI.
The Covenant moments are less ass, albeit extremely ugly.

I won't forgive them for what they did to the Boltshot, but the rest of the Promethean stuff was greatly improved in 5. Knights weren't just lame teleporting sponges, most of the weapons were given more unique functions, and Watchers weren't so annoying.

Probably not. It's just very clear that the Xbone couldn't run the game they had built without significant compromise.
What they should have done is either designed the campaigns visuals around lower polycount models with string art direction that "pops" (see CE elites vs CEA elites) OR just set the campaign at 30fps and kept the res stable. The compromise shit really just didn't work.

Knights aren't a problem in 5 because they got completely overhauled. Even in large numbers they would be fine because they don't take forever to kill and offer something a little bit different than the usual enemy. They're almost like big Jackals.

I never found Knights in 4 difficult to begin with. I never had trouble dispatching tjem because they went down so quickly to their own weapons. If you like the overhaul that's fine, it's kind of irrelevant to me. What's relevant to me is how much homing ammo is on the screen. That's what makes 5 such a slog for me.

Midnight is my second favorite final level in the series. It's the only level in the game where I never have ammo issues because every gun is either promethean or a power weapon so either way it's super effective against Knights and they drop like flies even on legendary. The earlier level where you're forced to use the DMR is hell.

Honestly the best thing about the One X was the backwards compatibility improvements, and the SeX makes those pointless because it does them even better.

Like many things in the franchise, they peak right here in CE.

Altogether a great showing which, while not recapturing the magic of CE's Flood, finds its own appeal.

Incompetent. They constantly show up late, react to the plans other factions set in motion, and get tricked. They tried to add some mystery back by not showing Gravemind's face and having him talk telepathically, but his role in the story is so pathetic it doesn't even matter. And while their environmental corruption courtesy of the Xbox 360 could have been interesting, it's wasted on a bad mission (Floodgate) and the worst mission in the entire franchise (Cortana).
An embarrassing way for the true villains of the franchise to go out.

Good point. And if you factor in more of the gameplay it exacerbates the problems. CE's are agile and aggressive. 2's are slower but you don't have the Shotgun to mow them down. I do understand Bungie wanted the Flood to be more reactive to damage in Halo 3's gameplay, but it leads to them feeling less intimidating than ever before. Combine that with the writing and it's just unfortunate.

Still, the Spartan Laser needs to perform more like a Binary Rifle with a charge up time. You should have to stay on target for more than a tenth of a second to get the kill. It takes one guy with a brain to pick it up and refuse to use it on infantry to shut vehicle gameplay down. I would know because I was that guy. Make it a little more difficult like I mentioned and have the Reach 25% charge use per shot, and I think it might work better. Play around with respawn times and spawn locations as well. I really think the weapon can work, it just needs changes.

It's very uncommon. You need to swipe unreasonably fast to miss a vehicle kill, and infantry kills are almost guaranteed because the full burst doesn't even need to connect to kill them. Making it like a Binary rifle would nerf it in the sense that you would have to be even more careful and deliberate when using it. It would discourage using it on infantry while making vehicle kills more difficult.

Wouldn't most of the planet's ecosystems and weather patterns have been wiped clean or completely altered? That doesn't sound fine. Even if you blew the planet up, all its materials would just get ejected and eventually combine back together due to gravity, so technically the planet would still be intact because none of its mass actually got erased, just converted to other types of matter/chemicals/molecular compounds and it would still be clumped together so you could technically say the planet is still 'fine' but looking at it from a common sense perspective, that doesn't sound fine at all.

Forge World was a good "Look at what we can do" idea, but the performance hit wasn't worth it. Forge maps ran like shit in that game. I'd rather have gotten 5 separate maps like they originally planned, at least then they could have changed the time of day or something.

He point wasn't that Forge World performed worse than Sandbox, his point was that it's annoying that as the basis of almost 40% of the launch map roster, it caused all those maps to have less than ideal performance.
The maps in Forge World are anywhere from fine to whatever tier, but it' annoying that they make up such a large chunk of the game's experience.

How do you not have fun in those silly Invasion modes in the customs browser? Between those and Desert Bus with modded vehicles are what saved Reach from being completely not fine. I like the ones where you have to have to board Covenant/UNSC battleships in the air or at sea. And then it gets more dangerous/claustrophobic as you push deeper into enemy territory so it really feels dynamic and exciting, especially if you get to the objective. Some of those Invasion modes/maps have so much variety. You really feel like a squad of Elites/Spartans doing a real mission in the Halo universe, not just generic arena team battle or regular boring invasion with generic-ass objectives. Some of the objectives are a wall of turrets or anti-air guns you have to blow up that the enemy can actually use, or objects to steal/destroy, it's not always just king of the hill pretending to not be king of the hill.

I also like that one with all the battleships in the water with warthog turrets set up like anti-air guns, and as the defenders you have to destroy the incoming falcon/banshee swarms while they try to knock out all your guns. They can get really creative and fun with these. This is the most Halo that Reach ever gets, so hating these means you hate Halo. Custom Invasion is fine.

No, they're fine. Some of them seem designed to favor one side, but in those cases it sometimes makes sense, but for the most part playing either side is really fun because you have a bunch of different weapons and vehicles. But it really depends on your team in the end. Plus, you switch sides anyway, so that makes it fine.

How fast does Doisac spin on its axis? Is it similar to Earth's? If they have longer days, perhaps it actually took longer than 4 Earth minutes to destroy the Infinity. Maybe more like 4 hours. We'd have to check. Or did he really mean 4 Earth minutes? Since the Banished were originally part of the Covenant, maybe they used their form of time which could be different. Not sure if the Covenant and UNSC ever agreed to some kind of shared universal time, so I doubt we'd have the same time measurements/system. 4 Earth minutes is a bit fast, it's hard to believe. Even if it did take only 4 minutes, it might be more believable to say 4 hours, 4 minutes sound like an exaggeration, so it might not be taken seriously in the future and maybe even discounted when they put it in the history books.

It helps keep the pace consistent though. I don't want to be stuck playing a perfectly balanced match and no one makes any progress and the game ends in a draw or the other team wins by a technicality which just feels unsatisfying. I want a clear winner/loser and I don't want the match to drag out for too long. It's not impossible to make a comeback and it's not like they're completely unbalanced. You still have a chance to score either side. But generally I think the attackers should always have an advantage just to keep things moving. Being stalled at the first objective is never fun, especially since that's when the mode is most stingy with the sandbox, so you're stuck with all the shitty weapons/vehicles (on both teams). The great part about customs is they tend to be more lenient on the sandbox items early on.

That only happens in Reach Big Team Heavies. You can always fight back in Invasion because you always have tools available. Heavies makes it so easy for one team to just take everything from your side and lock you down in your base for the entire match. Invasion at least lets you switch sides for a reset so you can still have some fun. Invasion customs is one of the more fun modes in Reach because both teams get to feel powerful.

For infection I prefer Halo 3 with a really strong super zombie, like a juggernaut or fat kid or sky castle. And a lot of times your own team tries to sabotage you as a survivor, so it's easy for the zombies to build up their numbers at the start. And then eventually the zombies win. Reach's version of infection doesn't really do it for me, unless it's one of the wackier types like Godzilla or maybe a Resident Evil-themed city or something, but that's more of a map thing than a mode thing.

They need to hurry up and just port 5 to MCC already. Halo 5 Forge doesn't really cut it. I want MCC's playerbase to be able to easily jump into matches and keep the playlists and customs populated. If I do play Reach nowadays, it's usually through the customs browser or Heavies (which I'm instantly reminded why I don't like it, especially when they slap me on Ridgeline or Highlands. Go ahead and laugh, but the modded versions of this map I've played in customs with the killboxes removed are pretty kino. Just a big, open battlefield with a ton of vehicles. And sometimes the maps have a small city in the middle with skyscraper buildings that you can climb up on foot or land on with a flying vehicle to do the objective. The default/vanilla version is pretty lame though, yeah, dunno what Bungie was thinking.

I'm pretty sure your first purchase with it automatically gives you a $59 store credit too, but I'm not sure if that was just an initial promotion.
It's also a huge social flex to put down a luxury tier card at a bar or restaurant when paying.

The problem is that most people here are 1: Genuinely poor, and 2: are tempted to use it on way too many dumb little things like video game consoles and graphics cards that will only be used for gaming and AI porn. I'm not a musician, but I think CE's fewer instruments each had more impact and more weight to pull, where as a full orchestra with all those extra instruments and higher definition that have to share the space, so even though the instrumentation and sounds might be higher quality overall, individually the instruments don't pack the same umpf. They can't be all loud and strong like in CE because there's too many of them and then they wouldn't be able to fit the limited bandwidth of the sound file and you'd hear crackling as it peaks. So the volume of everything needs to be lowered and the sound is softened to show off that higher definition. In CE's soundtrack, there's none of that fancy dainty stuff. Each instrument has a big job and does its own thing so the sounds individually are stronger, but it's not crowded so they all have space to sound stronger. That's just my take. Dunno if any of that is right though. Maybe someone with experience in music can explain better.

There's a utility to convert them, you just need to find a way to connect a 360 drive to a PC. It can be either with an official adapter or just taking the HDD apart and plugging it in with your PC's SATA cables.
I did it recently myself and it works great.

You can search Halo 3 in the custom browser. There's always one or two guys running a number of customs, including fat kid on sky castle in standoff. Personally I love the games with the warthogs and stuff where you gotta knock each other off the small map/platforms. And Goose Hunt on Sandbox is always a good time. Halo 3 customs is so comfy and chill even today. It's not just nostalgia. It's still fun.

I highly reccomend starting with RUSTYNA1LZ or Jesus in Malibu. They both have a LOT of the classics you're thinking of.
One thing to note is that the MCC UI is somewhat cumbersome to navigate. You have to download game types separately from maps. I've found it easier to literally get a pen and paper, and write down the game types you get so that you know which maps to also download when you do that section seperately

The scaling should be identical. Halo 3 doesn't give you a lot of vehicles. It's pretty much just Tsavo Highway, The Ark, and The Covenant. Halo 3 levels have a lot of backtracking, too.

what is the UNSC main space fighter? The longsword is more of a bomber and anti-capital ship fighter, so what's their main dogfighting ship to counter the Seraph?

Is it the Sabre? if so why was it only in Reach?

The broadsword in 4 is such an ugly design I don't count it also it's 343 lore

The Sabre was a prototype model being developed in secret by the time Reach was invaded.
It likely was to become THE UNSC dogfighter. What it was meant to replace is pretty vague though.

I remember reading the codex in Mass Effect about how fighters are obsolete because of the distance combat in space is fought at, and anti-ship point defense systems. Was cool.
Then ME2 or 3 came along with Star Wars dogfights because it's "epic".

Dogfighting is dead now, let alone in the future in space where you'll be locked on and engaged by something 20,000km away.

As long as a cheaper spacecraft can launch a significant payload there will always be "dogfighting".

I never got into reading decent books because I was assured by lorebeards that the halo books were amazing. Trusting those people probably set my life back by over a decade because I associated reading with the boring, unimaginative shit that are the halo books.
