Mostly the second one. Story can be skipped, companions can be ignored. Nothing will save you from playing a really shit-tier game except not playing that game.
I play Neptunia games though. I have no standards.

To answer my own OP: Imo shit story in rpg is the bigger dealbreaker. RT combat was trivial, but the story and companions got me to replay it twice. Thought WOTR story was cringe only played the game once.

I think you are mixing things up - in Dragonfall you get to work with Lofwyr as his personal security contractor, in Hong Kong after the dlc you choose whether to stay a shadowrunner and then integrate into triads expanding to Seattle or leave all that shit behind, get your SIN restored and open a security agency with your brother. I want to replay shadowrun sometimes, but then I remember the VR levels and no longer do. Actually, VR levels are about the only thing I remember about HK, I can't recall the story even remotely, and only remember one companion - the sociopathic dude with the drone. Oddly enough I'm sort of the opposite, I really loved HK's story. Like the guy who uses chips to manufacture a cheery personality where he retreats into himself and basically runs on autopilot because his world is too bleak but he can't muster the courage to kill himself, or how the Kowloon Walled City is one giant chi resonance focusing device. I loved all of the weird blend of traditional Chinese mysticism with Shadowrun. Despite most people's preference for Dragonfall I found the memorable moments of it to be the dragon and that was it.

And as for gameplay, I think I'd just install cheatengine if I was going to replay them. The actual gameplay was never great, I think I'd just want to blow through any shooting part.

Dogmatic endings are probably the best for everyone.
That doesn't mean you have to religiously choose the dogmatard option. There are plenty of alignment points to go around. So long as you predominantly go one way it gives you that ending. I got the dogma ending, but I chose iconoweenie options plenty of times as I saw fit.
That said the neutral ending is pretty good. Nothing horrifying happens.

Managed to create a NWN2 character yesterday after a lot of agonizing.
Gonna go Fighter/Bard/RDD/FrenziedZerk like anon suggested, but I'll have to go 2 Fighter/2 Bard at the beginning. The prestige classes will be enough to protect me from the multiclass penalty until level 24, but I'm hoping that by then it won't be that big of a deal.
Picked halberd as my weapon for big cleaves. I think it's underappreciated in fantasy. Hope the animations don't suck.

With master valor im at 12 repair. I get 4 more levels if I grinded to 20. Thats 2 more feats, if I took the +1 repair feat with both skills, thats +2 repair. +4 more levels is +4 more skill points, I have 1 skill point stored up. Thats only +2 more repair points.

just use a save editor and cheat it in. Repair serves no purpose on your main character besides repairing HK47 anyways, and a fully upgraded HK47 is still one of the worst party members in the game, so you'd essentially be cheating to handicap yourself anyways by using him.

For CRPG it's the bad story of course - the narrative/plot is the main reason to play such games in the first place. Even games that allow multiple builds usually end up being trivial and boring once you find broken combos.
For not CRPG it's a bad gameplay. For example, Death Stranding was a total drag to play and I don't care how "cinematic" is this story, how deep lore or "open" the world is.

Wizard is superior due to how resting works. There may be some items that are alignment restricted, but it's mostly irrelevant.
Also the game's not party based and you can only have 1 AI controlled companion along, so playing a caster is a bit of a pain in the ass, especially early.

Welp, looks like I'm starting over. The game consistently bugs out after this cutscene here by loading into the main menu and giving this >>517245306 nonsense error report. Googling gives no help, but does reveal that this is a recurring issue with lots of people, that has reports from now going back to over a year, so it doesn't seem to be something they've resolved.

I love this game a lot, it's one of my favorite contemporary games, but the old Owlcat spaghetti code menace shows up again.

I've done the prologue more times than I'd like to, but I'm willing to do it because I just love this game so much. And it's also kind of a shame because this playtghrough was ideal, all fail-able rolls were passed for story decisions I'd prefer. Oh well. What can you do

Got myself a halberd. Pleasantly surprised by it actually having bigger range in melee! Very nice.
I have to say the game looks absolutely atrocious. The art style is just detestable, even if the fidelity isn't that bad. I wish I had the armor editor from NWN1.

Yes, it'd be cool for them to have their own unique trees so that you won't just dump them for mercs and it does give them more flavour and background instead of having it dumped on you. I don't really recall any CRPGs that do this. Tekehu in Deadfire has a unique transformation but that doesn't matter much. DOS2 had unique source skills for each character but all of them save for Fane's and the OC are useful.

But Gondor does have this bizarre devotion to past kings. It was portrayed in quite a bad light ~ if I recall correctly it was one of things that caused decline of Gondor; kings were more interested in bygone relatives rather than their own children.
I ahve always thought that it was something like mystery cult where only king and numenorian circle of peers around him were invited - with rest of realm following their own spiritual traditions. Some added materials (and later ttrpg projects) imply that Umbarians have a far more morbid version of that cult too.

But considering what numenorians knew, and barrow wights and rest show, they knew some real divine magic secret stuff. Even the set-up of Minas Tirith throneroom shows there's insane amount of spiritual authority invested on the king.

Of course, there is also surprisingly little information on the matter - it wasn't something that Tolkien, being christian, was willing to put much thought into.
I kind of like it, it ironically makes the setting more unique

I think Hard is the upper limit on still being at all fun instead of cheese tactics and being forced into a certain build or the same certain spells and abilities over and over. I think Core and playing unoptimally is ideal, really. Taking feats and using equipment for RP reasons and that sort of thing.

People complain about the trap detection in BG, but I actually like it. I might be good at spotting them but that doesn't mean I can race through a hallway, at least that's how I headcanon it. So it's a mechanic that actually makes me change my play style, I have to advance cautiously and pause occasionally, as if I'm actually looking around for traps.

Fun to see the new spells from Spell Revisions, some are pretty neat. Also Shar-Teel has 120% Cold resistance just from equipment, some experiments will need to be performed when we're somewhere safe. As a Fighter->Mage I just got my level 4 spells, and Polymorph Self has the Winter Wolf form. I'm envisioning Faldorn throwing down an Ice Storm and Xan blasting everything with Cone of Cold, ideally healing Shar-Teel a bit.
Also looking forward to trying Simbul's Spell Matrix, basically a lower level Spell Sequencer.
I don't remember clearly this part of the game, but in 30k experience I'll have my fighter levels back. I hope it happens at a kino moment.

It's funny how many people want another Pathfinder game, but they're just kind of like "Nah :)"
Maybe they're sick of the setting or something. But it just seems so stupid because like, they made amazing progress from Kingmaker to WotR, and WotR is I think the best modern CRPG we have. BG3 sold more and appealed more widely but I think WotR is all-around the best of what we have so far.
To get to that point and then just drop it like "Well, time to do completely new and unrelated things!" is just... I don't understand it, I guess. I suppose as a creative work, it necessarily has to run on team enthusiasm, so if they're burnt out on it I guess I can see that, but... I don't know, just seems fucky, and like they're just dropping something they've finally gotten to a pretty decent point.
Wish I knew more details about why they're leaving PF behind for the time-being. Also they aren't like, breaking with Paizo or something. It's been confirmed a number of times, they are just prioritizing other things and would be open to PF in the future.
Just somehow, after the really impressive work on WotR, they decided to ghost and move on. Because why make and sell APs with this already finished engine when you could start from scratch, right?

It doesn't attract the top talent like film & TV, or more commercial software products. So people learn as they go along and then probably leave when they have an offer that isn't exploitative gamedev pay.
And with everyone their own indie studio there is very little institutional knowledge passed around, everyone learns the same lessons over and over.

the difference is buffs in mmos last like 10 minutes so you do it once before the dungeon/raid and maybe once before the boss fight
and those buffs are just mana+cooldown based and you can still use your entire spellbook without sacrificing slots
here you have to click through shitload of buffs that will last 2 minutes or two turns and which effectively limits your ability to cast anything else

Except that's how I've been playing and it's fine.
Maybe barkskin on 1-2 people more likely to get hit, chug a mage armor potion and bingo-bango ready to go. I have Ember as a pacifist who will do NO damage the entire run, so her whole thing is running around helping people out, it works very well and I don't have to spend time buffing. It also behoofs me to improve initiative then too.

Shit story I can sit through if there are at least nuggets of intrigue. I didn't like the main story of WOTR, but it was intriguing to find out what the deal with the knight commander being as absurdly powerful as they are. The payoff wasn't worth it at all. Companions I don't care much about, they fulfill a function.
But if I don't like the gameplay at all, or the building is completely one-dimensional then I'm not going to do much beyond that. WOTR in particular (being the only crpg i've played to the end in recent times) has some moments of horridly boring gameplay but it at least tickled that build theorycrafting itch in the back of my head. Even if most of them didn't pan out exactly.

Ninjas are basically just Japanese spies. They're more about information warfare than performing superhuman feats and killing people. my favorite build of all time in NWN1 was the kama monk rogue. since most servers had a max level of 30 post-expansions, since the last 10 levels just absolutely trivialize the game entirely it ended up being something like

albeit it was absolutely an entirely dead build against somebody or something that was immune to crits/sneak attacks. pretty sure that same build works in nwn2 as well. i even recall doing it but with assassin instead, which was orders of magnitude worse than rogue simply because assassin doesn't even get close to the versatility that the rogue does.

The middle three are easy.
First is either a paladin or a cleric of Iomedae. Wearing a tiara, so clearly relies on mental stats. Longsword is a classic paladin weapon, but there's no rule saying that a cleric can't wield one, and it is Iomedae's favoured weapon.
Second is a slayer. Wielding a shortsword, but wearing medium armour when a rogue would wear light, and missing the inquisitor hat.
Third is obviously barbarian. Wearing hide, wielding a greatclub, built like a brick shithouse.
The man on the far right and the woman in the foreground on the left are trickier. Neither have weapons or armour, which suggests either arcane caster or monk. Monks usually don't wear shirts, but I don't think that's a hard and fast rule.

You're overthinking everything.
It's a paladin because it's wearing a paladin basic garb+heavy armour. A cleric can take a heavy armour proficiency feat, but no feat would allow them to wear a basic garb of other class. The cleric is the woman in the front, kneeling in front of a fallen soldier because she's wearing a cleric class garments.
The other three are fighter, barbarian and wizard because they are wearing their respective class garments. Although i'm not sure about a fighter since I don't remember what their clothes look like, but she does have a tankard on her belt which only fighters have as part of the attire I think

Source is easy to get though
Kill 3 enemies with pyroclastic and you can source vampirism it back from their corpses
And from 16 and onwards you have an infinite amount of bodies littering the world to siphon from besides the ones you kill directly
Not to mention the source fountains in act 2 and 4 that are LITERALLY INFINITE
An ability costing source is not an excuse
It is harder to set-up, use, and build around reactive armor than pyroclastic eruption

Yeah but balance in DOS2 is already a joke because there are 1 billion game-breaking builds and strategies. So nerfing one spell while keeping the others is just stupid.
Chamleon cloak costs 1 memory slot and 1 polymorph investment and is available from level 1, it can even be taken as a starting skill. And it breaks the AI if used solo in a fight. With play dead on-top you can kill enemies, chameleon cloak, kill enemies some more, and then play dead to repeat the process.
And for damage there are more ways to kill enemies than you can count, including instakills with lava from terrain transumtations and other polymorph spells which equalise hp
This game is broken as shit already, why ruin a genuinely interesting strat that is fair?
Reactive armor has a long cooldown and deals damage to yourself. It is more balanced

And this annoying ritual is perfectly reasonable to expect from the player, as Larian forced you to heal yourself manually after every fight in the prequel, which took longer.
My point is that source is abundant and infinite, therefore source being required can't excuse a spell being overpowered.
You also get apotheosis at level 16 as well and skin graft at level 9. Meaning you can spam as many source spells you want in combat as if they were normal spells. Spells costing source is just cosmetic

Sure the fused spells are strong when I get to cast them but having my spellcasting MC be a sitting duck for 90% of fights is like the opposite of a power fantasy, they didn't even give this class any attack cantrips for some reason.

I might debase myself and get the EA for Swordhaven and Banquet for Fools and Songs of Syx, just to support two indie crpgs that I think are promising. I won't play until the games are finished though.
Maybe Skald, Legionary's Life, Six Ages, some other smaller titles and crpg-adjacent, we'll see what's on sale and how I'm feeling.

You're also talking as if I implied gameplay is the most important part of an rpg, which also isn't the case.
I'm not "discarding" Baldur's Gate, or anything of that sort. I'm just saying that the gameplay is rough. Which makes sense considering it's the 1st Infinity Engine game, but doesn't make it less true.

I remember Spellhold causing quite the trouble in the unpatched version of the game, but yeah, BioWare was kind of an exception back in the day (which was one of the reasons why they've had such success in 2000s).

The key for older games being better (not perfect) about not releasing buggy messes was the notion of 'physical release' which many zoomers might not be aware of.
In the Beforetimes, to play a game one had to have its Soft-ware on a diskette of some type, typically bought from a store (like a merchant in a shop) and used on your computer (basically a really big phone).
This method of interacting with the game made patching very difficult.
With advancements in the World Wide Web and the Information Superhighway, it became more practical to disseminate patches digitally, and so many studios began the practice of "fuck it, we'll do it live". The most cynical of studios even banked on players not making it to later content.

I know, most of the millennials are retards but at least they are not as conditioned to sucking on merchant's cock as later generations are. Now they slurp on slop micro-transactions f2p shit and praise devs for "patches". There are retards that pay premium to beta test games in form of "exclusive EA". Oddly enough the games are still bugged mess anyway, even after release.

That was more of an issue for much older games like Ultima (downloading a patch for Ultima VIII to fix the platforming was quite a big deal). Besides, it opened the other can of worms, like inability to delay the release even if your game is quite problematic (like it was with Arcanum, VTMB, or Alpha Protocol).

Having devs patching the game is better than having modders patching it. Literally every big cRPG from late 90s/early 00s have some sort of "unofficial patch" going on, which are mandatory to enjoy the game; and the older ones have their engine entirely rewritten (like Ultima VII and Exult, or Daggerfall Unity).

Sega shelved the game for couple of months, with no testing whatsoever (it was just lying around), and then pushed it for physical release just to be done with it. Steam wasn't that big a deal back in late 00s.

Talking about this particular swede, DLCs broke Paradox because they've viewed them as an excuse to release half-baked poorly designed games, and then just pile features on top of it, but on the other hand with their old addon model they would've just abandoned CK2 and Stellaris with some crucial unfixed bugs just like they did it with EU3, HoI3 and Vicky 2, nevermind Sengoku.
