Also, a big factor is that the game is at the moment where there's a modern degenerate combo system, but is primitive enough for it to not devolve into modern combo autismo unlike more modern fighters.
It's basically retro enough to feel like 98, but modern enough to have modern combos, but old enough for them to not be a major factor in the meta.
Yes, there are characters that can kill you with some 5 stock bars.
But at the same time, those combos are limited and aren't free candy like modern fighters.
So basically It's like an old dish, with enough chilli peper to be spicy, but at the right proportion to be spicy without trashing the taste of the dish.
Also, all characters are viable at higher level.
Doesnt mean that there aren't tiers.
But more that even the lowest tiers, have usually enough tools to become degenerate at the highest levels.
But those degenerate levels still takes very high skill to just being able to input them.
Basically Chin and choi has a 80-90% damage combo, but literally only like the top 1% autismos can lab it.
Also, all the cast have at least a 1 KO combo with 5 stocks.
Even shermie has a 80% damage combo, that is easy to do for begginers.
