I fear for the future of this franchise. The latest games have no direction nor idea what they are doing. They have no balls and either make a neutered GoT-turned-shonen or can't even fully commit to Aerith's death. Their latest games try everything and in turn, botch everything because they have no direction, no clue what they're doing, and no passion besides making cashgrabs. The gameplay is so oversimplified to the point casuals fall asleep. Why?

Just pirated 16, it runs worse than the demo for some reason.

Also, I don't get why Benedikta didn't turn into Garuda for the boss fight. Maybe she was cocky at first but after she god knotted the second time surely she was mad enough to just go all out, no?

Short update here. Just got the reveal that the hooded figure is Joshua, which I already suspected anyway. Removing the hood was probably just a formality at that point. Honestly though, aside from some writing nitpicks so far, and some technical stuff (only game I've played in ages that has crashes as an actual thing, and I play heavy stuff on a daily basis), I've got pretty much only good things to say about the game. The combat is fun so far, getting an extra eikon power really opened up a lot in how the combat flows. And while yes it is turbo braindead, I can appreciate the cinematic stuff QTE's mid combat for the cool effect.

I've heard nothing but bad things about this game so pleasantly surprised.

The problem for many is how long this lasts. It's a much longer game than many compared games and the novelty wears off for many.

Sales aren't important.
Paid reviews aren't imporant.
Awards from incestuous industry connections aren't important.

What's important is whether the game is good or not.
Is it interesting? Is it engaging? Is it fun? Does the story engross you? Do the environments and characters capture your imagination?
FFXVI? Not good, and nothing good about it.
Forspoken? Not good, and nothing good about it. Embarrassing even.
FFVII:R? Not good, massive wasted potential. Ruined for no reason.
FFXV? Not good, massive wasted potential. Should've let Nomutard have his schizo twin peaks edgefest.
KH3? It's ok after the DLC. Which is not a good thing to say about a mainline KH game, but out of all these games it's the only one with good combat (after the DLC). It was supposed to blow everyone out of the water and just didn't. Massive wasted potential.

Square Enix has been on a downward spiral for over 10 years now, starting with FFXIII and their desperate attempts at widening their demographics into the western market.
Like the story of the dog with the sausage, looking at his reflection in the water, they tried to get something that wasn't in the cards for them, and lost everything in the process.
Try to take a guess at how much money they lost on Forspoken and XVI.
There is no future for Nu-SquareEnix, and as they fall lower and lower their only option to survive will be to accept stock pumps from Blackrock and the like. Let political activists like SweetBaby have more control over their development. Release more uninteractive schlock like Life is Strange.
Unless a miracle happens here, it's unironically over.

and XVII will be the same, because CS3 are working on it with Ishikawa and Koji writing.

Harada said noctis was the most popular and best selling Tekken DLC and it got an influx of sales when noctis was added, the entire reason they even put clive in Tekken was because they wanted to replicate the success they had with noctis but with the newest ff mc, except they chose clive 6 months before ff16 even released and didn't think xvi would flop or that clive wouldn't be popular. Now clive's easily the most controversial entry since negan and straight up called the death of an already controversial game in a dismal state 2 months prior to his reveal.

I think it could have been fine, except that it wasn't. There's a timeline where Wuk Lamat is a minor side character who doesn't suck, the traditional parts of the MSQ aren't dogshit, and then Solution 9 is actually kino instead of just "well, I guess it's better than what was happening in Tural". Unfortunately, Kate and Hiroi made sure we don't live in those timelines.

At this point, I wouldn't be upset if they just keep using the Crystal Tower as a plot device and every subsequent expansion is a "Shadowbringers" using the Crystal Tower as a vehicle... except that the Crystal Exarch is now a moe moe kyun uwu fujobait simp, so maybe we can't even do that anymore.

How is that any different from IV being the blueprint for ATB combat for 30 years? 7R might have done a lot of things wrong but one thing it got right was the combat that found a balance between action and RPG. They’ve been going through trial and error with this for years even with XV and XVI. I wouldn’t mind if they stuck with 7R’s combat for another 30 years, as long as they don’t forget what made it good in the first place. Things can only get better from here.

Because it's a stupid point of comparison. But I'll level with you. I agree that Metacritic's weighted average is nonsense because we have no idea how they've assigned the weight to each critic behind the scenes and it could all very well be made up (thus creating "bullshit numbers") but in the case of Steam reviews where we have an average score and the number of reviews that created that average, then a weighted average can be created without making anything up. No personal opinions getting in the way by assigning games different weights based on their own feelings, just pure mathematics using numbers from public data.

This is another name that Paulie is allowed to melt down about for literal hours. And SoP blended Nioh and FF very competently.

To the point Team Ninja must've given me overly high expectations for 16. Just imagine a Devil May Cry game with as many weapon types as SoP had, the closest is 3. If you could customize movesets for each weapon like skills for SoP weapons, it'd be a blast. Couple that with an FF game's huge enemy variety with sophisticated enemy attacks like a DMC game's, the concept had so much potential that didn't happen. I guess the devs thought the player couldn't handle it so Clive's basic sword moveset and the enemy movesets had to be shallow.

SE just stopped paying for Denuvo on XVI, so you can try it out for free, or even finish the game and never buy it.

As a piratefag who later buys the games that he likes when they are on sale, this is what I recommend. Same for Rebirth. Play the game now, and if you like it enough, buy it whenever it's eventually on sale for $25 or whatever.

Why do you guys love the idea of X and VII sharing the same universe? FF titles are not meant to be related. If anything, having the same universe undermines the identity of each games.
And yes I know Ivalice games and FNC exist, but FF is not known for this feature.

That is possible, yes. The way Steam achievements work, sometimes I even unlock everything just by booting up my save, but even in these instances there are usually a few achievements that are not unlocked even if I have done their prerequisites in my save file.

You just drag and drop the file, yeah. Or, sometimes, the pirated copy already writes the save file to the same directory that the purchase copy reads from and you don't need to do anything.

I think this depends entirely on the game. Newer pirated copies usually are a slightly outdated version, but I've never had any issue. That said, there are times where I don't even download the game after I purchase it, so I can't say conclusively that it's never a problem, but any time I've wanted to replay something that I pirated, or any time I've decided mid-playthrough that I wanted to buy the game because it was currently on sale, I have never had a save file issue.

If they were to remake it, they really shouldn't go for the full mainline quality graphics. They should do something in between, like between Trials/VIsions of Mana budget and their mainline budget. Only in graphics, though. I would fully expect animations, content, and a much further fleshed out story and world.
Someone said that the game should be split into two, with the World of Balance, and then the World of Ruin. Sounds good to me.

I think I figured out why CC is so unmemorable besides the ending. In a game full of interesting sounding things we're stuck with FF7 references and Gackt. This game had the opportunity for the Wutai War, Wutai members disguising themselves as Shinra employees, Anti Shinra elements, infighting between departments within Shinra's military, a fucking psychic. There is not a single FF game that can be posted in this thread that causes as much unfiltered seethe as FFXIII does. There are many mentally unwell people here who will literally attempt to burn the thread down with their nonstop shitposting, just at the sight of it's screenshots. They default to "if you post XIII, you are my sworn enemy and a shitposter of the highest order no matter how much discussion you participate in"

Every single FFXIII poster talks amongst themselves and will engage with each other peacefully on the game and it's themes without a second thought. I know because I have those discussions all the time. Others though, will melt about the game and it's posters completely unprompted.

They cry and piss and moan about those FF discussers and enjoyers. Simply because someone openly criticizes FFXVI. How dare anyone praise the game I don't like and criticize the game I do like!

I thought the ending to XVI was melancholy and bitter sweet, but ultimately a retread of Final Fantasy XV's ending. There are a ton of similarities.

But instead of being an unforgettable sequence of epic fantasy proportions, where a King takes his thrown and serves his destiny, where the souls of the Kings, your grandfather's and father before you send you to the afterlife wielding their powers so that you can kill Satan once and for all who is your great uncle.....it's just a big wet noodle. There is no deeply satisfying character conclusion and post credits scene that makes you say "that was an unforgettable adventure" while wiping away a tear.

Instead, you punched "god" in the face without anyones help. The Eikons don't count. Ultima lays there like "k you won but your world is still doomed fag" and then Clive says "but humans are like, strong or whatever" and then they both die. The characters cry. Torgal howls.

The storybook ending post credits might be the most unoriginal plot device in FF history.

Overall it's all well directed, well produced, well realized....but the ideas behind it, the actual meat of the storyline itself, it's bland, uninteresting, and has almost nothing unique to it's payoff.

just the overworld stops though, stops in mt corel for example only heal HP
it makes some chapters easier like against bottomswell, but others work the same as rebirth, the chapters that are dungeon focused

Every modern FF game is talked about here though. People post about VII Remake A LOT. There's daily XV posts, XIII trilogy posts, XII, X. VII, VIII, IX, and beyond.

XVI is the most recent mainline title, so it's completely understandable why many discussions take place around it

The reason XIII has it's discussion is a lot of factors, mostly the characters. But also, FFXIII is the last mainline title that shares more game design with it's predecessors in 6/7/8/9/10 than it does it's successors in 14/15/16.

It's Active Time Battle, 6 Jobs, three niggas in a row. It has a very over the top melodramatic JRPG storyline with bold characters and science fantasy elements. It is a linear game, but it's storyline synthesizes it's game design. It's themes are timeless and hopeful centered around family.

The reason XVI has it's discussion is because it's an equally unique but not quite equally divisive entry. XVI represents an even greater departure than perhaps any FF before it by cutting out the RPG elements almost entirely and having a Mature rating. It's exclusively an action system, with it's game design influences shared with the MMO instead of the other FF games. It's themes are more dark and melancholic, morally grey. That is until the ancient alien threat out of nowhere. Action is fun.

Both of these games represent a "modern" mold of a big expensive Final Fantasy game. Something that puts the RPG systems mostly in the backseat. Painfully linear levels, casualized, dumbed down, streamlined. Over the top action and story elements.

But they both do a few things well enough that the player can sink their teeth into them if they so choose. Similar "throwing off" of the old and bringing in with the new. With XIII you have the open field area with hunts and ATB combat that gets really difficult, and in XVI it's the Ultimaniac and Chronolith trials with hack and slash combat that gets really difficult.

VII had far more of it's world at a higher level of detail, clarity and design already. Less characters to play. A world already more concisely designed in 3D. Which makes the job of remaking VII's game systems, areas and assets more of a straight forward affair. Nibelheim for example has already been designed in 3D multiple times before, it's not that hard to make that place again.

VI is entirely pixel tiles, every city shares the same tiles. The entire world shares the same tiles basically. It's flat. The work that they would want to do to create a brand new version of the game world and all of it's many locations would immediately double the front end work load of conceptualizing the game.

Conceptually, there's almost twice as much work that would need to be done in order to adapt VI's world, gameplay and storyline to a modern AAA title. There would need to be many, many concessions made and a lot of assets reused. Making it half assed is not something they like to do anymore. Just look at the Loveless play in Rebirth vs the original, silly ass play and how elaborate the production is. Or the Junon Parade and how polished the cutscenes were.

Then think about how over the top the entire Opera House sequence would be, and how much time would be spent developing JUST that scene. Then, extend that dedication across the many, many scenes throughout the game.

It absolutely would take longer than VIIR has, which would mean over 10 years. This would naturally lead to the game releasing in multiple parts in order to recuperate years worth of development costs.

Anything related to Yoshida is talked about here to near obsessive levels by seething schizophrenic shitposters who can't go even a few hours without shitposting about Yoshida. This has been occurring since long before XVI even released, except back then it was XIV. Back then, the shitposters would bring up XIV themselves to shit on it, and if anyone replied to them explaining why their shitpost is pullshit, they'd link the /xivg/ thread and tell them "wrong thread tranny". This is a deep seated issue for them, that no one has ever been able to explain.

As for why XIII is so talked about - it's completely artificial and manufactured. This thread has historically had Vanillefag (who might also be Clairefag), Clairefag, and then Vaynefag (who liked Cid Raines). These people did not talk about XIII that often, most of their appreciation was for the character they are associated with rather than the game that character is from. No one ever batted an eye, except to sometimes poke Vaynefag to engage in some "fun" shitposting with him, which I'm sure actually annoyed him. Anyway, now that the shitposters have chased nearly everyone away from this general, one of the preexisting shitposters took it upon himself to create a new persona that likes XIII, so that he can blend in with one of the few remaining constants - Vanillefag - and he's been using XIII to shitpost about XVI ever since. Of course, the seething schizophrenic Yoshida shitposters who never left took the opportunity to shitpost Yoshida/XVI this way as well, because their entire life's mission for the past several years has been to shitpost about Yoshida, and that's what XIIIfag's mission is as well.

None of it is real, all of it is fake. Prior to XIIIfag showing up, if you said anything nice about XIII, you got called a woman or a tranny.

He's already got a knack for telling a story from multiple perspectives, it could actually work, and it would definitely be more interesting and captivating than OG VI.

I quited enjoyed KH3, TWEWY Neo, XVI, and have the new Mana wishlisted. Rebirth was fun but still had some of the slowness of Remake. My original point was about all the fluff and time spent on things in the remakes anyways.

Despites flaws and actually hating it at first I appreciate how wildly different it's story is, and I really love 13 2 and lightning returns. The surreal insanity of the setting really appeals to me. Kinda didn't like how each game in the trilogy seemed to shit on the identity of the previous game though. While I can respect completely destroying the world repeatedly as a metaphor for man being at the cruel whims of the gods it really sucked if you liked the tone of any of them.

Good way to put it. It has familiar elements but it subverts many of those elements in interesting ways that are unlike what you've seen before. The Warriors of Light are cursed instead of blessed, the Crystals are feared more than they are revered.

True. Each one seems as distinct as the next. This harms the cohesion of the trilogy, but it makes each game unique in their identity and can stand on it's own merits. Each game can be enjoyed for a lot of different reasons, and each one is the favorite choice of each XIII fan. I think that is pretty interesting. The variety of the series is pretty special.

Here's an even better idea, make a party based RPG Final Fantasy game with elements and resistances. So that those interesting gameplay mechanics and powerful abilities can be shared across an entire cast of characters. I enjoyed XIII's ending a lot, so XIII-2 retconning it certainly was a kick in the balls. But the way I see it, my headcanon is that it's all timey wimey mumbo jumbo timeline shenanigans. There are many worlds and outcomes for those characters in those paradox worlds. XIII-2 basically kicks off the alternate history timeline that leads into the world being reborn and Lightning becoming the Goddess.

But I still like to think that XIII ends right there on Pulse. Snow and Serah are married. Hope grows up to bang Lightning. XIII really is a self contained story, but it has an alternate timeline sequel that leads into the world being reborn.

If you want to put aside differences, then you need to stop being so ridiculously insecure about FFXVI. You have posted over 30 ultrawide 1440p screenshots in this thread alone. You are constantly, constantly defending XVI from all sides from any and all critiques, like a mad man. You need to relax and post a different game for once.

That is basically shown to you throughout the game in XIII-2. From the very beginning when I saw that Serah was the only one who "remembered" Lightning coming home, I felt like it was basically just a split timeline. There had to be a world where Lightning did come home in order for Serah to remember. When you view them as being separate and distinct entities that tell different stories using the same characters and themes, it comes into greater focus.

When I post screenshots of Final Fantasy it's often trivialized for being "spam". The way these ultrawide screenshots are being posted so consistently alongside posts that aren't exactly intellectually engaging makes the XVI poster seem quite desperate for conflicts, desperate to defend a video game from criticism. The spells in XV are actually fucking amazing. Summons too. I'll never forget seeing Ramuh for the first time. Or the way you can QuadCast or QuintCast a Thundara/Thundaga, and just absolutely eviscerate a dozen Magitek in an instant. What a great power fantasy. It looks amazing and feels extremely satisfying. I'm not sure why so many people complained about magic in XV.....You put the ring of resistance on someone and then do whatever you want to. Multi cast Thunder is genuinely some of my favorite spectacle in FF.

Meh. It was designed around the 4 slots in combat. Ignis only has those slots, so there can only be that many elements. It's a design limitation that is linked with the gameplay. It's not just missing outright for no good reason. I never cared about the other elements missing, especially Water. And especially considering the elements aren't all that important to use in the game anyways. You can beat the game without it. It's far more about the visual and presentation of a power fantasy than it is the RPG mechanic.

I didn't "defend" the design decision of limiting the elements. I just stated that it is what it is. It's a limited design decision. The game certainly could be better with Earth crystals and Wind crystals too. Sure, there could be more elements. Why not? Well, there's still only 4 slots linked to the DPad and it doesn't use a full Commands menu. There's no room for extensive skill lists like in other FF games.

It didn't bother me. There's no Water or Bio because you can still Poison, and Blizzard is the same element but actually has a useful status (freeze). Also, XIII has all of those elements in tact. Not sure why you are deflecting to a different JRPG. I'm not talking about XIII.

The Remake is actually good if you play it solo. I just played through it all. There are some new endgame dungeons too.

Everyone who can actually seriously discuss these games openly admits the similarities between XIII and XVI though. I've posted about it many times. XVI is perhaps the single most direct follow up to XIII's linear game design philosophy. Fight/hallway/cutscene loop is very apparent during it's main quest. Liberation from opression theme. Fighting Fate meme. The streamlining and oversimplification of mechanics is a problem shared between the two games, with XIII retaining it's JRPG mechanics and Command based roots while XVI abandons them. Both of them hallway cutscene simulators where you only control one character.

People post about the SNES games all the time. But they are over 30 years old. Visually, not interesting anymore. It's not new. There's only so much that can still be said about them. People want the Remakes, but Square isn't content allowing that to happen without Kitase and Kitase won't do it unless he can expand everything.

I think with VIIR part 3 finally realizing the airship alongside classic systems and exploration, we may finally see another beloved FF remake.

It's running some mods and a Reshade but yes, I adore the look and feel of VI Remaster. It's far and away the best 2D FF in my opinion and arguably the greatest Final Fantasy of all time. The sight-sound synthesis is truly masterful.

I'm allowed to say I don't like Yoshida's games and they don't appeal to me, that Kitase's games do. That's my preference. You have yours. The point of a discussion is that you discuss those opinions and debate on merits. Outright dismissal of earnest dissent makes you narrow minded.

It is perfectly normal to not like Yoshida's games. Especially the two most recent ones.
