They tried with wild rift because it would invite more players to play League since it's on mobile and not PC.
PC League is dated and needs a complete overhaul but they wouldn't do it yet since they can still kick the can down and make enough money off it to fund other projects.
They've also been trying to diversify the IP by making other games or publishing books/comics, board games, tv show, whatever to gain relevance or some revenue to see if that would be profitable enough with some being good and some bad but it seems like PC League still holds king.
The loss of potential players that will probably not pick up the game long enough to level 30 and even think of buying a skin compared to veteran ones on their 10th account buying the same 5 core skins to complete their collection for their champ is nothing in comparison.
I also think if they do try to make things from scratch the new devs being hired to make them will make it somehow lower quality than the current one because every new iteration or update to the client has been awful so far with the only one that was working and fine being the original one despite looking outdated in terms of it's UI but that might just be me being cynical and the new game being fresh from scratch will perform better than the current one which has been worked on top of 15 years of spaghetti code.
