Every single idea I come upon, with serious consideration and regardless of level of uniqueness, ends up having others appear out of thin air with similar games. Why does this keep happening to me? It just keeps happening over and over! My best and one of the more unique ideas to date has finally had this happen to it as well. My chances of making it are slipping out of my hands! Why does gamedev have to be so popular now? There are higher odds of others arriving to the same idea as me partly thanks to the sheer quantity of developers. It doesn't even seem to matter how unique my idea is, if I thought it, then there is likely someone out there with not just a similar/same idea but is developing it too. How am I supposed to cope with this?

same phenomenon as when you switch cars and suddenly whatever car you got appears everywhere. and I don't mean in GTA because of the spawn table, I mean in real life. it works for any new item you buy or use, you will notice it everywhere because now you're looking for it and before you weren't.

>How am I supposed to cope with this?
1. 99% of game projects are vaporware so most likely whatever competitor appears will just wank around and never release anything. don't take them seriously unless their game looks nearly finished.
2. nobody ever gets into any serious dispute about IP in the games industry. it's understood that we all freely yoink ideas from anywhere. if it worked any other way it would suck.
3. most game mechanics have already been done any way. if you see a competitor appearing with an idea you thought was your own, likely neither of you really came up with it. likely the same thing was done in some late 90s or early 2000s game. the 3D game mechanics space was explored rapidly in the golden era. few stones were left unturned. consider that they literally made voxel destruction work in Red Faction. that's technology that would run at 27 fps with dips if a big studio made it today, and they pulled it off on 90s PCs. so humble yourself. you didn't really invent anything new and your competitor didn't either. you have to accept that one idea isn't what gives your game value. it's which ideas you select and how you execute the combination.

tl;dr - you are supposed to either not think your idea at all, and still make it (for example, your thoughts formed in your brain before you are conscious aware of them)... or, you are supposed to think your idea, realize it is a race, 10 other people who love porridge decide to make your game at same time as you for unknown reason. You race them, you beat them.... Or you get upset and post sponge bob onto 4chan.

and guess what? I have same idea earlier today to make the same post complain about people share ideas. Same for you, but you beat me to posting it.

This right here, the amount of rage won't let me enjoy these games knowing they ripped away my chances of freedom. I just couldn't enjoy the first game I played with a similar idea to mine. Idk why, it just felt so similar to mine even with the differences. It sold well by my standards.

best way to build large structures? have general idea for the shape and traversal of the structure. so far, largest structure I create. rest have been simple design

Yeah but yesterday, what I complained was over an idea sitting in my notes for maybe 2 years until I recently saw others using a similar style culminating with seeing one in next fest. It wasn't as enraging as this since I wasn't too sure about the idea. This idea though, this is the one™ starting to feel like I'd have better odds gambling on crypto and just hiring a team to make my ideas for me with the riches. Now I've got the advantage.

Would help with how competitive indie gamedev has become. Look at how aggy daggy has difficultly succeeding compared to the 2010's. A team of 3-6 anon's sounds like a solid team size not to big not too small. Enough to work on up to 2 or 3 projects at one time depending on size while also having a rotating door of potential games to jump to should one come off as ngmi and get cancelled.

i'm a lot into meaning making recently. ofc basics like old school philosophy first. basically cognitive science.
i more and more have this theory that every is a form of language. be it art, music or video game. or architecture or whatever. everything is symbolic and therefore a language.
so everything you do is saying something. and what you say needs to make sense for people to understand it.
e.g. when you don't know how to speak the language of music you might make a song that says "rabbit house banana i run ship and down forward halftime". people will just be confused.
you need some sort of pattern to tell a story. everything needs to speak a language.
for a video this would be "i explored the area and found a monster and killed it, then it dropped some loot and i found a rare strong item. then i equipped that item and became stronger than before"
this is the type of language people will understand.
and that type of story also describes the genre or archetype.
first and foremost we love clarity. that's why cotton eye joe can be just as successful as a love song.
ofc there is themes that succeed more than others, but fundamentally what people love first and foremost is clarity. stuff that makes sense, things they can understand.
whatever you create is a form of communication. a symbolic language. that's how we also navigate in real life.
"i was in the forest, a place full of trees, i heard a noise, i saw it's a deer, i followed the deer, then i took my bow and aimed at the deer, then i shot the arrow, i have hit the deer, it fell down and died. then i went to the deer and picked it up, bringing it back to my shelter."

in everything you do you need to identify the symbols and the context and figure out if the story it tells makes any sense.

Just finished making my shitty an*roid game and I've only just realized that Google added some bullshit 14 day testing requirements with 12 different users just to put the game on the goddamn store

So how am I supposed to make lag compensation?
For example shooter:
I press fire button, it sends input to the server with a timestamp, server calculates the lag and rolls back in time the controlled characters and shoots
Now question, how exactly the server calculates the lag? You cannot use RTT since its one-way message. There is no info on it AHHHHHH IM GOING INSANE

workin on localization. each language has their own set of fonts the game switches to. missing some chinese characters still

protip: dont localize and dont do key rebinds. game would've been done like last year if i didn't do that.

wtf do you mean with "calculates the lag"? the server would just receive 'client input at tick 50', it will rollback to tick 50, process the input, then will "roll-forward" executing all queue up inputs from all players again and send the world state in the next tick (it would be many ticks ahead). this works great but consume a lot of cpu, basically the server must be able to run lots of "world state" and keep rolling back and forth between many states for every tick

What if framerate is not fixed and its impossible to synchronize the session time?
My current best guess is that the client stores its input history in buffer, then the server asks it and executes in order, so it can calculate RTT

I literally spent all night yesterday trying to make a reaction diffusion shader and got close but never managed to get a good result. There's tutorials in how to do it for glsl and other software but I don't know how to translate that into Godot because you need to create a feedback loop with subviewports which isn't a 1:1 translation. my chemical reactions always die out really quickly for some reason

To increase revenue and reduce churn, I was thinking of adding a level skip button. If a player dies enough times on a level, they can watch an ad to skip it, but it wouldn't add to their score nor mark a level as complete. I think what usually works well is requiring a certain bar to be met, over multiple levels, to unlock the next … level of levels.
Don’t know what kinda levels your game has. But offering a "completed, but not very good" path is sensible.
Unlocking everything or allowing to skip everything just so - I believe makes the player feel like their achievements are entirely unvalued. So this doesn’t go well usually.

the tick itself is just a number that keeps going up each tick update. when the client connects the server sends the current tick so they agree on that, and a contract lets say 30 updates per second, now the client and server are ticking at the same rate and time even if lags happens (this is a oversimplification, you need a proper algorithm to do this kind of stuff in order to avoid the one trillion edge cases around time) but this is the summary

Well it's kind of different depending on what you're doing right? But rollback would generally come down to storing previous states. So for a shooter, what would matter is position of your entities. So you save a buffered list of the entity positions at each server tick. When the client shoots, it attaches a timestamp. The server compares that timestamp with its current time and says "this bullet was shot X server ticks ago." Then that bullet projectile on the server gets some int (rollback steps) on it that tell it how many ticks back it should check entities for collisions. Basically you're using the fixed update rate of the server to unify client behavior in a discrete way, so that you only need to decide during which bucket of time the bullet should have existed.

For more complex games it introduces a kind of mess where some things can influence the saved data that should come after it, and you need to figure out what influences what and what should take priority. In the case of a shooter though it's easy; the bullet is its own authority.

The server knows its own tick rate, you just roll back the timestamp delta divided by that to find the right timestep. There's no "agreement," the server is the authority and the client tries to predict what's going to happen there. Having input running on a separate tick doesn't solve anything.

It's done by synchronizing the client and server beforehand: client_offset = client_time - server_time - RTT / 2 (server-side)
Taking the median of multiple samples to account for network variance. Once synchronized, clients can start the game at the same time knowing that: lag = client_time - server_message_time - client_offset
On the server: lag = server_time - client_message_time + client_offset

yes, shots based only on raycasts are really easy because they have no future consequences, if some shot/raycast needs to be added in the past due to lag, the future of the scene doesn't change much, nothing other than a possibly a player with less health. for physics you will need let's say for 1 second of buffer, and a client server with 30 ticks per second it means that you will have 30 copies of your entire scene with all rigidbodies, and if you receive an input from a player with a delay of 999ms the server will have to go back to the oldest buffered scene, add this new late input, and resimulate the physics 30 times forward taking into account all inputs of all players in each tick AGAIN until reaching the current frame, then resend the updated state to all players. It's actually more complicated than that, because each object in the game can have a different acceptable compensation window, you need to define what's best for your game for each specific object (its hell), maybe accepting shot reconsiliation with up to 300ms of delay is ok, but a touch from a player that are 500ms behind who pushed the grenade in another direction may not be ideal. Imagine that the grenade has already exploded and 3 players took 50% damage, and then the server receives the delayed input from the player who changed the direction of the grenade 500ms ago, if the server just accept this you would have to revert all the consequences that the explosion caused, the players without any lag would see their lives filling up to what it was before etc, for a big game testing all these problems is chaos, but if you're working on an FPS it's probably ok, good luck :)

There is a extremely low draw distance with build-in occlusion culling since the camera angle is always facing forward and lots of fog for atmosphere/survival horror feel it runs very well; I wanted to make sure its all one scene since its online multiplayer but a big connected world.

The geometry of zone 1 was made bigger so 3D platforming in online co-op is better. The games limit is 8 players right now but at least you can easily share the space of most platforms on the level design with one other player. It will be interesting to see how 8 player co-op sessions will get through it but difference races also have different platforming character skill moves anyway like how the frog can grapple and bunny double jump.

I've been listening to Sam Hyde lately and I think some of his advice is pretty good now that he's mellowed out a little bit and isn't fucking BPD women as often.
According to him he spent 10 years working on comedy before making $1000 and even then it was many years of eating shit, his family being harassed and rejection before he finally made it.

I've got a friend who's getting some serious player influx from tiktoks. They didn't make the tiktoks themselves, they're lucky enough an existing guy did it.

You should do them if only so you can learn to make better ones because unfortunately, it does help.
Someone here did a talk about marketing like this the other day. Someone should be doing it on the team if you can't afford someone. If you can afford someone, you can hire marketing students for well below minimum wage and they'd love to get the experience.

Otherwise just set a target number of tweets/whatever social media posts for your team every week/month and try to reach it consistently.

I don't know if I understand, but as far as I know this is impossible. Assuming a single timeline would desynchronize the client prediction from the server with every tick.
The inputs of each player will never arrive at the same time on the server, its simply a physical limitation that is impossible to overcome. Would be possible if your game had a tick rate of 1 or 2 ticks per second, perhaps, but this is not enough for games with characters moving on the screen.
With higher tick rates, the server will always be receiving old inputs, there is no way around it, so you have no option of not going back. To process the inputs predictably, it is necessary to go back and reinterpret the inputs constantly. See, if the server is for example preparing tick 10, and an input from tick 8 arrives and you simply process this input as if it were a single timeline considering this input from tick 8 as if it were from tick 10, what will happen is that the server simulation will be completely out of sync with what the client predicted (the client interpreted the input at tick 8 and not at 10 like the server). The result of this is that with every state update that the server sends, the client would have to be "pulled" to the correct position, it would be infinite jankyness, netcode it very annoying no way around it.
All this paraphernalia is done so that the client can predict its position on the server before receiving confirmation from the server telling it its position, the only way to have a single timeline and not have to implement all these things would be to not have any prediction on the client side, but this is unacceptable for 99% of players, without client prediction they would press a button to walk, and nothing would happen until the server's response arrived, this is completely unresponsive and terrible but much easier to code :)

I'm mostly adding smaller details and fixing some bugs before demo day. I think I can add 1-2 bigger mechanics in and be fine. Last couple of days before demo day will be making an actual start to the game where it can be played from instead of what it is now.

been trying to make a dissolve death effect to get rid of corpses but I don't like the result at all. Think I'll just turn the enemies almost black and spawn some 2D flames to consume them. Should look more retro than dissolving anyway.

Early steam_2 build audio FX testing for Bokube_Tutorial level/gameplay.

I'm playing through the entire game at 100% volume and tweaking a lot of the sounds trying to make it not hurt the ears but expecting you of course to be at 70-90% volume.

I really want it to just be 2010 again. I wamt to be able to just comfydev without having such a high bar. There's no such thing as running tick early on the server, the ticks would happen at the same moment in the client and server, the system must be predictable to be in sync. If you just define that at X ticks you will make the server wait for all inputs you will introduce an insane amount of latency, everything would need to resync ether way and would create more problems, i don't see what this supposed to solve, you really should implement a simple version of this to see for yourself all the problems at play, its a very enlightening experience. But just for reference games where physics are very importante like Rocket League uses a whooping 120 ticks per second.

Also, if you want to do your players a favour, make the limit customizable as a setting, so they can tweak it to their liking. Nothing feels better than looking back at the carnage your hero went through to get to the next stage. Pair that with some juicy blood particles and decals after hitting enemies and you're golden.

I played that hexagod one, it's... Pretty okay? The demo cuts you off short and I don't like all the disposable resources you can place down / having to micromanage the villagers but otherwise there's a solid foundation there, combining building with trying to line up tile groups to optimize production.

I don't get it. Is the online clout that desirable to them? A salary that high means you could just be a wagie for 10-15 years, retire, and gamedev without risk. Remove social media and I can just see the majority of them dropping gamedev asap and returning to their jobs, assuming they can even get back in. Is their desire for popularity so high that this is things they do for it? I highly doubt most of these see it as a route for getting richer faster since you're already on a rather fast track to being rich with a salary like that.

a dungeon has distinct floors that you pass between via "staircases" (teleporters)
they are all loaded at once, and theres only 2 or 3 of them

I have the same experience with weed. When I tried to quit, my game productivity fell off a cliff. When I started up again, I've been cranking out work for the entire month.

Still trying to quit though. I hate how much of my long term memory is just a blank grey wash. I feel like I have entire years of my life just missing in my memory, which feels scarey and sad.
