The thing about magic in asoiaf is that it doesn’t always answer. The degeneration is also in the morality of actions. You will be expected to castrate children at times.

Skin changing is the most reliable, or just consistently used/usable type of magic, given that it’s innate, rather than ritualistic or desperate. The ‘degenerative’ effect is just then splicing their personalities with their chosen animals. A person who bonds with a deer will become a coward, etc.

On this I agree, with DMGS you just use ash of war and attack. Same with Moonveil: stance, lash, repeat. Wing of Astel has great strong attack that also saves FP and AoW that rapes poise.

Not just him/them, but Martin goes out of his way to talk about about people controlling air, water and other elements. The Rhoynar apparently washed away a Valyrian city, then there’s stuff like the Valyrians themselves who were a civilization more or less built on magic. Asshai is noted to have all kind of sorcerers that thrive. In fairness there’s no mention of consequences for using them right now and that could change later and that’s not to say they don’t come with a price but there’s clearly no adverse effect on the level of something like the frenzied flame

The point is magic isn’t a science, and it doesn’t always work. It’s capricious. You can attempt to dabble all you want, you will still wonder if it will work or not, even if it’s worked before.

Sometimes the magic just goes away or doesn’t respond at all.

Moon sorceries use the same Carian sigil, probably to denote it being Carian owned. Cold sorceries don’t even HAVE a spell sigil, like the primeval sorceries, which makes me wonder if it’s one of the older types of sorcery, lore wise. Likely it isn’t Carian, it just goes far back. Zamor and such. They use it too. The snowy crone could have been a Carian, or of the Zamor.

Then again, the magic was done so poorly in this game it’s also possible they just didn’t want to spend more time on it, to make an actual cold sorceries sigil.

Game feels very unfinished in areas.

Giving everyone the same amount of spell slots was a massive mistake, and now everyone who isn’t a pure caster is a caster hybrid, nonetheless.

I’m not saying those memory stones are a mistake, I’m saying that they should have had Mind increase spell slots more or something.

I also think they should have made three slot spells more mechanically workable…

I know it's a zero percent chance thing and it's probably just a "You want to play a different game" but I wish there was less combat and more like environment stuff? I really like the idea of having to deal with things like swamps and having multiple ways to deal with it, boluses, torrent, flame cleanse me, I like that, or like the like lantern for light, torch for light, the light spell, but utility spells kind of like stop at that. I just want more ways to interact with the environment, navigating always felt more engaging than dodging normal enemies
Then again, again, the fact that that just sounds like a different game is probably the problem and also the fact that I can't think of specific examples of what something could be is probably a sign that it wouldn't fit. My main thought was like those giant statues that you have to have an enemy break, something like that like a Boulder blocking the way and there being multiple ways to deal with it. That sounds like combat rather than utility though still

Elden Ring has completely ass level design, but you can't really separate level design from enemies in a game (and a series) where you have almost no non-combat actions you can perform as the player.

The in game justification is that all the big shots didn't gave two shits about getting Great Runes (think of all the other Tarnished), failed and are out of the "game" (Vyke) or are doing something else (Gideon). His castle was also being defended by Morgott('s clone) with Night Cavalries patrolling Limgrave.
My headcanon-lore explanation is that no Demigod is able to get killed by a single person alone (except for plot-mover Player Tarnished) and taking down Godrick would be a more like a coup involving the entirety of Limgrave (and it ends up with Nepheli being put on power) because he sucks as a ruler (no support for Castle Morne and Fort Haight, his soldiers in Stormveil Castle are getting ill, his own son hates him and a lot of the soldiers aren't really "his", just mercenaries) It doesn't look that way since it's soulslike gameplay.

Did a few summoning pools today for the summoning pool challenge. Did half of Faram Azula. I just don't enjoy playing this zone, so I'm not every enthused to progress here.

I put on the hunter's ring today to try out life as a hunter.
First fight went terrible. But I one three others with help from the others. It seems you get spawned pretty close to the action, so there isn't a lot of time to prepare. Just got to eat the crab, and my physick up if you can, and jump into the fray.

In pick related, the red was right i the next room. I was crabbing when he noticed me and started swinging. I just started spamming R1 and praying. I have a lot of stamina, so I hoped to overwhelm him with a constant attack. He hit pretty hard though. There was some lag, and then suddenly the both of us are dying. I'm not even sure how the host and dog showed up. They just came out of nowhere at the end.

But hey, a win is a win, right? My life for the hosts.

Its got the speed and cost of a light and fast weapon art but the damage and poise of a super heavy attack, the range of a spear charge and recovery time of a feint.
Look how Giant Hunt is
>220% damage, 600% poise
but unblockable blade is
>297% damage, 600% poise

So its the same stance damage on a as a giant hunt from a spear/halberd/twinblade (30), just a hair less than from a colossal (36). Faster than piercing fang and less recovery but inexplicably does like 50% more damage and has the poise damage of heavy weapons, when its on a fist. Even fang only does 24 on thrusting swords

It did get nerfed though.
It lost the running 2hR2 > R2 combo the Pata has.
It also got hit by the global dual wielding damage nerf.

Also the damage type works against it, because the other weapons with that moveset have pierce, which will deal way more damage with the spear talisman on.
Also holy damage is heavily resisted in base game PVE, and bugged in PVP where most damage boosting gear won't affect it.

It also has low poise damage outside of L2 spam and doesn't have status so it'll get DPS mogged by bloodflame blade fists or claws, which is a setup with almost no stat reqs.
I reiterate my point about status, because in coop most weapons without %damage status are utterly useless.

It's a pure Holy AR weapon.
The Pierce that matters for counters is the Physical damage subtype.
After the DLC introduced the Claws of Night, they could've made it so both the Cipher Pata and the Coded Sword also had a shield piercing component on regular attacks.

Now that I think about it, the Claws and Sword of Night completely shit on the FTH anti-shield ones.
>split AR but it scales with a single stat and is so high that it doesn't matter
>regular attacks partially go through shields, ashes ignore them
>status buildup, 5-hit true combos, ranged attacks
>non-bugged elemental damage type that almost nothing in PVE resists either

Just for comparison:

The biggest nerf was for PVP by disabling headshots.
For PVE the Claws of Night L2 is absurd, because it has similar properties as things like Pest Threads where against big enemies it hits multiple times.

But what's stupid and broken is that the projectiles each deal 70% damage / 70% status buildup at short range and 39% damage / 70% status buildup at long range, so its still 280% of your bleed applied even if you're hitting someone at a medium/long range because of how many projectiles there are, not hard to land 4+ at long range.

the headshots pre nerf were insane because with so many projectiles it almost always gets one, and every headshot isn't just extra damage, its a guaranteed stagger, so it was 280% bleed and high damage and stagger on every shot

Not exactly.
Big enemies have multiple separate hitboxes, and Claws of Night's L2 can tag all of those individually.

The Star Fist charged R2 deals more poise damage(guard breaks a sewer omen in two R2s instead of 3 cipher pata L2's) and can be chained faster, while also having access to bleed and even frost depending on the infusion.
The Cipher Pata's L2 also won't trigger combo talismans, while the double hit of the Star Fist 2hr2 activates them even when uncharged, completely defeating the damage argument
And you don't need to pay a 17 FP tax to swing the Star Fist.

One fun thing I've noticed while testing the Cipher Pata is that the 1hR2 actually deals twice as much poise damage as the 2hR2 for some reason, and it chains pretty fast too so it's probably the better way to use them for PVE, and for PVP the 1HR2 still combos into a R2.

And the 3 hit combo of caestus does 34

I did some side by side video recording and looks like initial hit of cipher pata L2 from neutral is almost exactly same speed of charged R2 from star fist, and the chained second attack of star fist is faster than a second cast of unblockable blade by about a half a second difference

And going from 3 to 2 hits to break poise is a lot, the Star Fist can even use Cragblade to increase that further, but it comes at the cost of the ash slot and weapon buff.

Though the main reason the Cipher Pata doesn't see more use is simply because it has to compete with the Blasphemous Blade.

Playing the dlc for the first time, finally beat Rellana. This is my current build. I don't know if it can be improved further but I'm quite happy with how fun the deflecting hardtear is. Makes me loathe the dragon fights that I left behind since I can't just learn the moveset and "parry"

You can spam the R2 projectiles as many times as you want from using the AOW once compared to only 2-3 beast roars or vacuum slices, hitting something both with the laser and the weapon in melee range does a lot of damage and frost buildup. I mean its pretty easy for most of the game with flames of frenzy, black flame, lightning spear, rotten breath and optional swarm of flies from early mogh but yes the best spells like giantsflame and black flame ritual are gated at the very end. That's a shame because in DS3 you could get reasonably early GCFO

Flames of Frenzy hits like a truck but drives like one too. For whatever reason Giantsflame Take Thee was given uber high damage and lockdown while using the same cast animation as regular flame sling, so you have to wait all the way until mountaintop before you suddenly become an overpowered piece of shit

holy infusion isn't as good in base game since so many bosses have high holy resistance, so your damage isn't that good
