I can kinda see what he means about specific hits, like if you catch someone's jump right after they leave the ground, or punish an airborne backdash or Kain's fireballs or something, they count as airborne and non-counterhit so they flip out instead of knockdown and if you confirmed into a special that whiffed on their iframes you can get punished when they land and are actionable instantly, that's weird coming from games where that kind of thing doesn't happen and it makes things like holding up or mashing backdash in gaps much harder to get meaningful damage off when you beat it and it feels kinda bad sometimes. Also a lot of the buttons are weird in scrambles, there's no extended hitboxes during recovery or something so you and your opponent can whiff buttons in front of each other in ways that feel weird.

But a lot of that is also just not being used to using the tools that give you reward in those situations, like DP break or EX moves you can chain for a full combo. It'll be interesting to see how the meta develops around stuff like that, and guard cancels which seem like they'll be really good at shutting down those tools. Definitely too early to say much other than fuck Rev Blow

Sooooo what was the scene like for Garou anyway? It's always compared to as SNK's Third Strike but it always seemed like one of the more niche fightans in the genre. I don't know if it or Fatal Fury itself are more obscure, since Garou itself always seemed to be consumed like it was a separate entity from the franchise.

Once you play Real Bout 2, you'll realize Garou feels a lot less separate to the rest of the series.
That game introduced feints, and a few other gameplay and aesthetic things that also went for Garou
I can't say much about the original Garou scene though, I know nowadays it's real active on fc2

I think anime players won't stick with CoTW, there's a lot of neutral and the defensive mechanics will be too strong for anime style gimmicks or tactics to work. See diaphone collapsing in real time when they started blocking his crossup setup. Rev guard killing crossups and side switch mix is a big deal, and that's not getting into the full potential of JD options and red parry.

obv she doesn't have to commit to an air button after brake, but I wonder if Jenet gets decent pressure either way. The Rev Guard pushback after crossup should still let her land stand C. Barely anyone I fought blocked my 214D brake crossups, and no one ever thought to use Rev Guard, so I'm not sure.

I can understand the frustration of air hits not converting into anything, KOF is the same way. I'm fine with it, but there are some characters with conversion privileges that make them annoying (rock can AA CH into super, clark's EX anywhere tackle)

what makes GG different from the rest is what faultless defense adds to the corner game, the japanese had an entire term and meta centered around it that made competitive GG worth playing. without it it's just scrambling around until someone scores a hit into the corner (melty blood). this game is more neutral heavy than even KOF, it reminds me of 3s and SF4, so there's no way an anime player like LK will like stuff like air hits not allowing a full conversion into corner carry consistently.

A smaller scene mostly concentrated on Japan and in the states on fightcade. It was pretty much doomed the moment the arcade scene imploded, and SNK porting it to the dreamcast instead of any other console at first at the time.
The meta it did develop was a kuso meta where top tier characters had blockstring infinites or could easily guardcrush you.

i don't think fallen rock will be playable. he's just going to be rock's model rigged over nightmare geese's moveset. defeating fallen rock will unlock nightmare geese, and he will be wearing the exact same thing as fallen rock. so nightmare geese will effectively be the playable version of fallen rock.

Unless they are direct IP or LAN, lobbies should be accessed through master server too.
Now, it could be an actual SNK server or some Steam/console service (IDK), but both of those aren't an option for a cracked game.

I think the episodes of south town mode for CoTW is a good idea but we need to see how it works. I think the only way to really get casuals are singleplayer campaigns, but not crap like world tour. maybe something fun and addictive like virtua fighter's quest mode or something.

The fact they haven't shown much of it at all tells me that it's an underbaked side mode that exists only as a distraction. I'd have liked a little more of an explorable South Town, just not the kind of stupid autism that World Tour seems to facilitate. The topic's been pretty consistent though. KOFXV was backed by Chinese money, CotW is backed by Saudi Money. When they were working on S1 of KOFXV, they planned for S2 and CotW at the same time. Focus was mostly on CotW while S2 was just done by a smaller DLC Team that once finished started working on CotW. They clearly needed all hands on deck for CotW because they could only afford to do Mature/Vice as DLC for XV when people kept asking for the game to get more support while they considered the game done with Hinako

The fact KOF Studio lists all the prior fighters under its name should prove this, meaning it's pretty likely base XV wasn't even being worked on by the entirety of KOF Studio. They would've also been making SamSho DLC at the same time. Given the game was due for 2020 and Corona/Rollback delayed the launch by 2 years, it's very likely KOF Studio was like this:
>2014-2016: KOFXIV was developed and released, had everyone on-board. China buys SNK during this period
>2017-2018: KOFXIV is released on PC, they start working on SamSho and co-developing SNK Heroines using XIV assets and Season 1+2 of KOFXIV are dropped
>2019: SamSho is released and KOFXV is announced for next year. SamSho would release DLC up until KOFXV is finished
>2020: Corona delays KOFXV a year
>2021: Saudi buys SNK and they have to delay KOFXV again to incorporate Rollback
>2022: KOFXV drops, later this year Season 1 is finished and CotW starts development
>2023: KOFXV Season 2 is finished and CotW gets its first previews
>2024: CotW development, Mature/Vice released at the end of the year
>2025: We are here

With what we know, I think it can be generally agreed XV was thrown under the bus for Fatal Fury because the game was meant to be a quick one-and-done that kept getting delays and wasn't really high budget so they could prioritize moving onto reviving more properties instead of doing more KOF

It's very likely that the staffing was split 3 ways between SamSho DLC, XV and CotW preproduction similarly to how SamSho was split between XIV DLC and SNK Heroines. The only difference here is that SNK Heroines was technically outsourced, so it was less stressful in the long run

That being said I don't think SNK fully put the carriage before the horse with CotW because they would've absolutely shown us more than just a Rock poster for Fatal Fury's development back in 2022. The fact we didn't get a name until the following year must mean a lot of workshopping... After Team South Town released. I don't think Awakened Orochi or Samurai really got much dev priority given the first two S1 Teams were packaged with the game's "Special Edition"

But again the flip of "less than a year for new game" going into "takes 3 years" can't be ignored. Clearly KOFXV was the game they wanted to make, it's just an intentionally unambitious one because it was effectively a promise to keep the hype of "KOF is back" going that got stunted by real world events and left XV limping from start to finish. So I figure it was designed to be a distraction at best and was never really SNK's focus. XVI might be dealt a much better hand depending how they approach it

I would still maintain early-XV was more cannibalized by SamSho while late-XV was by CotW. It wouldn't really make sense if CotW was cannibalizing XV during its development due to the short flip turnaround from one year to two and a half. XV being a less ambitious project altogether just makes more sense from the initial announcements. Making a game in one year means you think you have everything ready and don't expect anything to go awry. If I learned anything from the Game Freak docs outside of Masuda is an incompetent retard, it's that whatever you plan for a game to be is completely handled at the beginning of development so that it goes smoothly

CotW at best would've been boring preproduction planning and pitching to SNK during 2022 and I figure after Rugal/South Town is the best timing for all of that to have been finished because after him is when XV's promo and ambition just kind of drops. They also would have likely finished planning S2 by that point

There's a lot of theorycrafting from me about the timing but XV really came out the best it could have been in the end, just very, very delayed. Maybe the planning was poor or KOF Studio was really hemorrhaging being split between like 3 games minimum but the game is in a better state than it probably would have been if it actually came out in 2020, especially after Corona killed SamSho prematurely

Noise Factory worked on Rage before they got their hands on Power Instinct, so they reused the engine for Matrimelee. They left in four Rage characters and MUGEN-ified them a bit. Jones and Elias were already strong vortex characters, Lynn was okay and Jimmy sucked, but thanks to buffs and added jank, they're Matrimelee's best characters. Let's say China never ate a pangolin. If the game came out in 2020, the game would've been the same but without Rollback. There's a high likelihood they wouldn't have even bothered with fixing the matchmaking or crosplay and left the game to rot because they wanted to work on Fatal Fury immediately afterward. Unless they actually wanted KOF to be the biggest game ever, and I don't even know why they would when even back in the 2000s they treated KOF as a cashgrab and the one time they didn't it lost them so much money they quit gamedev. It's SNK's Smash except all the games it's crossing over are dead meaning they're crossing over IPs they can't even use or promote so they have to make OC slop to justify why there's even a new game at all

So I think KOFXV is at its best it could have been without a fundamental restructure of what it should be from the get go. I don't think any more deep cut DLC characters like Duck King could really change what it is. I don't think a cinematic story mode was going to sell the game because their protagonist is a wet noodle at worst and an uncharismatic nice guy at best. Even if oldheads like Kensou, Chin, Chang, Choi or whoever KOF considers a "mainstay" was base roster it was going to get the game to sell. KOF needs to return to being SNK Smash for SNK themselves to grow. And I really don't think a fanbase whose favorite games usually are noncanon asset flips really should be considered the "core fanbase of SNK" because I personally don't think a single IP should be reflective of an entire company. It's why SNK Playmore never took off because instead of making SNK games, they were more or less just making KOF games

the last beta was actually really good if you think about it, they have the opportunity to make a second beta now after the capcom cup, like a week after it, and everyone will play it because the dix fatigue will be at the highest point and it'll be a beta with all the fixed problems from the first one, fixed matchmaking, training room available, full roster, better menus, less lag/loading, it's a huge opportunity

Fatal Fury doesn't really have that many moving parts to really account for lorewise so it'll tap out around S3 with characters like Duck, Mary, Yamazaki, Alfred, Rick and Krauser. The series never really hit SF or KOF levels of essentials and the MotW cast + Andy, Joe, Billy, Mai and Geese is really all the game absolutely needs. Asking for more is just being super greedy

It doesn't really lend itself to the possibility of new games going forward but the game only really exists to conclude a cliffhanger in the first place

Honestly with the way SNK handles their fighters I have higher hopes a Fatal Fury sequel wouldn't really fuck up the lore, continuity, etc. that much so if we get "another one" it's a high likelihood they'll manage to bullshit something better than what Street Fighter's been doing

But honestly it's been getting harder and harder to justify brand new sequels to games as of late when people want games that live on for 5+ years and get upset when a sequel doesn't reinvent the wheel

Unironically would rather have Iori or Shermie over Kyo. They have fighting styles that would imply a lack of Orochi presence in the FF timeline and Claw Iori could make up for a lack of Freeman. I think it's a shame that moveset is basically cucked from existing because there's no reason not to just have traditional Iori in games

Also I feel Shermie seems to be the most willing to get into brawls over even Yashiro or Chris. Without Orochi influence, Chris is basically just a kid. Yashiro's entire motivation to get involved in shit is because of Iori so he doesn't really strike me as someone who would show up unless Iori is there. And in that case, Kyo is still a better option in the long run

Plus hypothetically it would be really fun to see 10 year time skip versions of 98 characters in CotW

So I finally got around to checking out all those Neo Geo games that Amazon/Twitch gave out for free like 5 years ago. Got some stuff like KOF98 and 2002. They seem like really outdated ports because the menus are just horrible, I hate them. Is it worth getting another version of these games like the ACA editions? I've wondered that too. As I said before, given the split between KOF universe and the Ryuko no Ken/Art of Fighting and Garou Densetsu/Fatal Fury universe didn't happen until KOF 96 (RBGD/RBFF also being in 1996 where Geese died there yet he isn't dead in KOF 96), both KOF 94 and KOF 95 can still happen in the Rnk/AOF & GD/FF universe.

They can't happen in the same way that they happened in the games. The AoF team is younger in KoF than they are in FF and '95 would either imply that Orochi exists or would have to be rewritten to remove Rugal's Omega form (in which case, what happened to him? Did he blow up his base again, but actually die this time?)
One could also argue that Rugal's tournaments caused the King of Fighters to catch on to the public, unless Chizuru not hosting '96 caused it to just be a fad.

I think Tsugumi Sendo is one too, but otherwise yeah you listed the only 3. Fatal Fury has never really been a grappler series. It's why I vouched for Shermie being included since you wouldn't really need to worry much about the lore as long as you just say she's from CYS who are just some no-name band. Or even remove her from CYS entirely

Otherwise I don't think there's much potential for a new grappler design in this day and age. We see this pseudo grappler shit all the time in new games like Manon end up being dropped completely cause Gief is actually just better to play

Just realised that these Japan only pins could tell us that the base roster is going where most of us think it's going. There's one for each character (plus two logos) but only two are hidden when it should be three to line up with the 17 characters in the base roster. I'm thinking Kain and Hokutomaru get the two that are hidden, Jae Hoon shares the Kaphwan pin with Dong and Geese and Fallen Rock don't get one so they don't get spoiled. It also lines up with Freeman likely being cut and not getting one.

Freeman is likely cut because his voice lines are with the other NPCs like Grant and Marky, so if he's not playable he won't be getting a pin which would make sense because there's only two pins left (likely for Kain and Hoktomaru) and the other character can share a pin with someone else (likely Jae sharing Dong's pin). If Freeman was playable then there'd need to be another pin for him but there isn't.

The main reason that game keeps dying is because nobody ever actually wants to play it. SNK practically caught them on a bluff with Global Edition and outsourced it to some shitty dev studio who fucked up the online so this time it doesn't even work... And there's still no response to XIII being broken while Oda was pissing and shitting himself that the CotW OBT didn't work
