They were trying to attract a modern audience, e.g generation Z. They have nostalgia for things like Adventure Time now because it came out when they were 5 years old.
Younger people will spend more on an F2P game than older people.
Some kid that watched Johnny Bravo or Dexter when they premiered is now almost 40, thus is less likely to spend a bunch of money on micro transactions compared to his kid that has way more time to spend disposable income on games.
You may not like the roster, but that's because you were not the target audience. And that's okay. But this is like complaining that Fortnite appeals mostly to kids. That is who it's for.
Sure, the strategy did not actually work, but can you really blame Player First Games for trying it based on their market research?
