Alright, done with Dark souls 2, found it more fun than Dark Souls 1 but I can see why people hate it and if I didn't have 10 years of warning and advice I probably wouldn't have liked it all that much either. Didn't like The Crown of the Sunken King but the other 2 were good. Time to move on to Dark Souls 3, the game I already played 20 times at least.

I had to strategize and play with the environment in ways I don't usually need to in either DS1 or 3, playing to the weaknesses of each member, make the melee guys run after me once behind me hit the archer, slow the havel guy by dropping into the pond while I slap his leaner sword buddy on solid ground and finish the last guy with backstabs and parries. It's no Nameless King but it was better than any other duo boss in DS1, 2 or Elden Ring.

I stopped that awful DLC where you are in the dragon sanctum. Couldn't find a/the(?) bonfire in there and the lake area with imperfects seems silly. They take seemingly no damage from anything (tried lightning, all physical, magic, dunno what they're weak to) and you're in slow-ass water. But it was more I was just tired of the expansions by that point. You think DS2 is a joke, then the DLC all make it worse. DS2 feels like it's made by people who hate souls players, and DLC turn that dial up.

I only died once to those guys and it was because I somehow didn't see the giant fucking monster behind me, my sunlight blade on a lightning infused royal greatsword did good damage to them but I was using both the ring of blades +1 and the lightning clutch ring.

Amusing looking at the negative reviews for each dark souls title in steam. SotFS negative review area is littered with negative (i.e. clown) awards. When you like something it's hard to see people rejecting that thing you have a part of your personality attached to. The people who dislike it usually don't do it as an insult but subconsciously it might be taken as such specially when it's a common opinion, as it indicates you're an outlier. Humans don't like being outliers, baked into our brains for survival as fitting in a group was somewhat important but emotionally having the "wrong" opinion means you aren't as great as the guys with the right opinion, and if you can't win them over but are somehow attached enough to something to really care about it, something like Dark Souls 2 and it's steam reviews, you might as well defend it.

Yeah that sounds about right, I've seen the same and similar in other areas of life. Interesting too as hipsters are a thing and they're akin to the flip-side of the same coin. I seldom have this attitude, but I to some degree have some distrust for anybody who says DS2 is "the best" or (to a lesser degree) their "favourite souls game". More-so with how militant such people typically are (steam review awards being one of many examples). I'll be getting DS3 soon and I hope I enjoy it. Loved 1, disappointed in 2. And it seems as if those who liked 1 also liked 3. And 2fags can't enjoy any other title.

If you go into 3 expecting Dark Souls 1: 2 you're also going to be disappointed, it is a good game but not because of it's similarities to 1 and if I had to describe it, it'd be as if 1's DLC design philosophy was made into a full game.

That's fair, I've done a little bit of reading on it here and there (trying to avoid spoilers) and watched a little bit of the start and can tell it's much faster. One big downside is how roll-spammy it apparently is (by what I've seen and a common complaint). Enemies and bosses seem to have more silly attacks and combos, of which what I've seen on ER this is even worse there too.

What would this be for you? I found Artorias to be a great boss, Manus to be poor, and Kalameet to be decent/good. I remember not caring for the most part of the environment (what little there is anyway) in the DLC too.

NTA. Ds3 is a boss game. Run backs are almost nonexistent. While The level design is a huge step down from 1. Though I won’t call it bad. Whereas dark souls 1 is a dungeon crawler game. The environment on the way to the boss is a huge part of the boss fight

I still remember the first time I fought it. I was lucky enough to barely see the ladder and kill the crossbowman on there, then I fought the boss normally. I didn't even consider the plunging attack from there, or to trick the boss into having him fling himself off a ledge (aren't there 3 spots he can do this from along the wall?). Deathless at least but felt a little silly. I though the ladder was only so you don't have a ranged prick shooting you the whole fight, similar to the Channeler near the Gaping Dragon.

I'll try to keep it short.
Dark Souls 1 design was quite open and while being centered around combat it wasn't an action game (mostly). I'm not sure how to describe it but I'll go with "Adventure RPG", a big journey that mostly let's you make your own path, while there is a kind of intended path a big part of it (in a first playthrough) is fucking around, exploring, going forwards and backwards, all that stuff, and while combat is always present and the main challenge of the game it isn't the focus, it's too exploitable, easy and somewhat clunky. Exploration and discovery are. Dark Souls 1 is "hard" might be experience speaking for me but none of the games except Sekiro are but in a puzzle way, because once you know what you're doing the mechanical execution of what you need to do is quite easy and under close inspection most bossfights are gimmick fights that are there as a roadblock or to emphasize the end of an area.
Of course that changes with the DLC, exploration is a part of it, but you only have one way to go, your build's mostly set in stone by now and the bosses are designed in such a way that you can't really get clever anymore, you gotta roll, you gotta block, you gotta hit and that's it, no more climbing on a tower for the plunging attack or running to the stairs to get the dogs, it is a straight fight, encounter design isn't a puzzle but an exercise in pathfinding, target prioritization, mechanical execution and how skilled you as the player are to make it happen, no longer YOUR journey through the world but an action adventure where most paths were defined by the developers, an action game.
I'll talk about 3 in my next post but it's mostly me repeating myself to make a point, sorry about taking so long but it went through a couple of rewrites because I collected my thoughts about the games as I wrote the post.

Dark Souls 3 is an RPG flavored Action game, the levels aren't bad but they aren't a puzzle or your own adventure through the world, it's the defined path the developers put for you with a couple forks on the road, encounters aren't puzzles anymore, they are exercises in pathfinding, target prioritization and pleyer's skill on reacting, defending and attacking, the focus is combat and the game's very good at it but most fights are straight fights, not puzzles.

You have one path with a couple of forks in the road with some secrets along the way, the level design isn't bad, but it is the level design and exploration designed for a focused action game with a fixed path, the RPG aspects are the player's way of inflicting damage on surviving the enemy, magic might be ranged and miracles can heal but it's all about rolling, blocking and hitting them in what are mostly straight fights, and bosses have become so good (while being mostly straight fights) that they're basically half the level, not simply a roadblock or and endpoint.
Builds are balanced and focused, you can't make a giant dad taking advantage of the Roleplay mechanics of Dark Souls 1 the allowed Pyromancies, Havel's and FaP rings to be so good as they were thematically appropriate but awfully unbalanced for gameplay. The combat was optimized to almost perfection on both the player side and the enemy side but that also allowed 3 to be lazy with the puzzly design of it's encounters, those "puzzles" were the crutch that made clunky DS1 remain entertaining but 3 didn't need them.
That's about all I have to say without repeating myself even more than I already did, Elden Ring is the closest of them all to the Dark Souls 1 experience but the Dark Souls 1 school of encounter and boss design is gone and can never come back, not because Fromsoft isn't capable of doing it again but because doing it again is retreading old ground and they ran out of interesting stuff even back in 1.

It is obvious but I consider 3 to be the best of them all with Bloodborne being a close second and Elden Ring to be a regression but unlike 2 where it's an incredibly flawed game with some great ideas I believe the rest of them are fine, but different and 3 appeals the most to my taste.

A shame since I don't care for bosses in games in general, but really enjoy being in a game that feels like a world, where it was designed as an environment first, then game/level second (DS1), than the opposite (DS2). I've looked about as it's a frequently asked question for games similar to DS1 (specifically the level/world design) and there's basically none like it. A few 2D games get mentioned but personally, no thanks, mostly misses the point and 2D games are impossible to capture some fundamentals of DS1 (e.g. able to see other areas of the world far-away that you can visit). It's weird that to me it always seemed as if the world and everything surrounding combat is the focus, with combat being secondary, but yet post-DS1 the developers seem to think otherwise. I'm probably not wording it correctly, but it seemed as if combat was only as good as what surrounds it.

Quite interesting what you say about ER and it gives me a little more interest for the game, whenever I pick it up as it will be a while. Taking a short break from Souls for now then will get 3, then again a break, then ER. I hope 3's combat is more reliable than 2. 2's hit/collision boxes were often pretty bad and yet I seldom had complaints with such in 1. Your posts reminded me of a common theme I've seen in those who praise DS2; it's PvP. Something I don't care for, but apparently 2 has "the best" PvP. I can see this at least being partially true with the covenants, 2 seems to have the best covenants for PvP, at least thematically (like rat covenant, is interesting conceptually).

It sorta is, but I'm used to reading a lot anyway and I really enjoy this (albeit rare for 4chins) dialogue. Would you say the world overall is good in ER or at least, you liked it? I forgot to add: I wish for them remake (actually remake) DS1 one day and actually complete it. It's obvious enough when playing, but then you read and listen to interviews and alike from Miyazaki and other devs on how the unfinished DS1 is due to time. Anor Londo onwards the quality takes a dip, especially in areas like Lost Izalith. Probably unrealistic, but it's rare I give a damn to this degree over an unfinished product.

You're not alone in that thought and while many moved on there are still quite a lot of people who are still waiting for the world design and interconnectedness that was shown back in DS1, you kinda see ghosts of that interconnectedness and that world design in the game sized Elden Ring DLC and to a lesser degree in the base game.

Think back to 2011 to 14, what was Dark Souls known for? Being the game with a great world or being one of the rare hard games when gaming was being streamlined in the pursuit of mass appeal? With that in mind it makes sense for them to put that focus in combat, Dark Souls 2 probably tried the world design thing again but it also failed in most aspects due to development, but From, both past (kings field, shadow tower) and future (SOTE) is perfectly capable of making great worlds that connect in interesting ways.

Covenants and invasions mechanics are better but the hitting another dude part was the best in 3 and sadly went back both technically and mechanically in ER.

The world is fucking great (DLC is better), it does suffer from the open world curse (recycling and the interesting parts being divided by mechanically nothingness). It is more action oriented like Dark Souls 3 but unlike 3 I think it found a nice middle ground where it can have both great combat and an interesting world, though this time the online element is the one that's suffered the most. The thing is normal bosses don't cut it anymore, the player (both the character and the average guy who is playing these games) has grown so much that "normal bosses" are barely common enemy material nowadays, the gimmick fights in 2, 3 and Bloodborne are considered the worst by people with bad taste which is too common and as I said before while I appreciate 1 I think both the players and the developers knew you can't do that kind of design again, it's unfortunate that ER reached the endpoint of this arms race between player's skill and boss capabilities where it's getting hard for sure, but mostly annoying.
I'll borrow >>515127043 but I'd say that both 1 and ER aren't level games, they are their own category, world games, different in how they execute the premise but they're neither level games nor boss games.

They should remake all the souls games, I don't care about the gameplay or the graphics, change them or leave them as is, but I want to play the side B to all these games that was lost in development and now only exists in early builds, leftover data and old idea. I want to see the snow in the Northern Limits of Demon's Souls, I want to see a complete Dark Souls 1, I want to see the time travel bullshitery of Dark Souls 2 but most importantly the Eclipse of Dark Souls 3, the flying serpents and Snake Soul haven't left my mind despite the game being almost a decade old.

Hell no. Not going in there without a divine weapon. By the time I went there I had two (and a third if I downgraded the occult club if I needed). After Parish I done a lot of Darkroot (Basin and Garden). I remember even killing the Hydra and Titanite Demon after Gargoyles, neither were tough even though I remember people saying they're tough. 1: Chaos Servant. I like that there's this neutral and frail NPC you can be 'friends' with. In a world full of extreme violence and corruption, seeing neutral and friendly entities is a rarity. And speaking with her with the ring richens the experience too. IIRC she appears healthier the more humanity you feed her too which was a nice touch.
2: Honestly none. They're all pretty boring, much like the game. Loosely similar to above I chose Rat King at first as it was a little amusing to just walk around otherwise would-be enemies. And the Rat King's dialogue is a little interesting too, IIRC it changes the higher your rank. But the novelty quickly wore off so I left.
3: Mound-makers. The tiny bit of lore is what's interesting for me. You've perhaps seen a pattern here. I don't care for covenants in any of the game and generally just pick someone who looks/sounds interesting. I've no interest in PvP or any of the ignorable rewards.

I parry everything in dark souls 1 but I still use a shield.
I can't parry anything in 2/3 consistently and I still use a shield.
I see other people dual wielding and using large 2-hand weapons and performing better than me.

I just did that and got all Elden Ring achievements in ng+1 and so I had put 140 hours into my first playthrough where I just did everything on my own and found all but 1 of the bosses (One of the 3 dumb magma wyrms but the one that has an achievement tied to it for some reason). Did Ranni's quest and got her ending. Started NG+ and got naked with the 3 fingers, defeated every major boss and Radahn to open up the crater so I could get the only Talisman I was missing from Nokstella. I backed up my save just before Radagon/Elden Beast, got Frenzied Flame ending. Then I loaded the save and completed Millicent's quest, stabbed myself with the needle in Placidusax's arena and got Elden Lord. All in all getting from 36 to 42 achievements took me 12 hours. If I didn't save it would've taken me around 18 hours so I don't regret it at all. After all I am just scratching this completionist itch and it doesn't really matter at all apart from that it looks cool on my Steam profile.

Great Scythe was the only one that stood out to me because it has the uniqueness of needing to hit the blade for full damage, and you can hit behind shields. fun moveset with backstepping to trigger running attacks, switching between 1H/2H. had a lot of fun sitting in the Darkroot Forest with my Great Scythe.

Probably a bit of a silly question but how likely are you to be invaded in souls games if you're just playing through normally and not going out of your way to PvP (e.g. covenants)? I've never been invaded in multiple playthroughs. Unhollowed. I don't think I've ever sinned though (maybe one playthrough in DS1 but that game perhaps too inactive for invasions). I clearly don't know the mechanic well enough but never been invaded in so much time is a little strange. I do see bloodstains and the random phantoms/ghosts of players in the same area briefly (those you can't interact with) too. Or is this only something that really happens in the latest souls game of the time and probably not in any of the older ones?

ds2 still has item inject cheaters and has item banning but ds3 doesnt. i dont know about ds1. in ds3 youre safe from hacked items and item injections. items dont ban in ds3 at all. they disabled that to combat people getting banned by cheaters. for some god forsaken reason they didnt give ds2 the same treatment though

I was trying to figure out why my hand was starting to hurt and I just realized the fucking Steam Controller has terrible ergonomics. the most used buttons are down towards the middle, thumbstick and abxy, basically swapped from xbox.

If anyone wants to know a great controller for PC look no further than the Razer Raiju. My gf's Dad gave me this as he had it for his PS4 but it doesn't work on the PS5, I had been using a PS4 controller to play Souls games on PC but this thing is a beaut. It's super heavy and feels weighty in your hands, it is also good if you have fairly big hands. It's of solid construction and has 2 additional shoulder buttons and two paddle type buttons on the back. Game changer.

I've unlocked all or most of the shortcuts around Skyrest Bridge, and it's neat that there's like 8 fucking paths that all loop on themselves, but I have no idea where the fuck to go. There's an elevator in the shitty wooden shanty/cargo area but it doesn't really go anywhere except back up to Skyrest. I've tried fucking around in Umbral but that's just more shortcuts and opened doors back to SB again.

I want to replay DS1 for the first time and I'm not too sure what kind of weapon or build I want to go

My first playthrough I used the great scythe and some pyromancies and so for this playthrough I want to try something different. I want to use a weapon but I wouldn't mind using sorceries to buff and stuff.
