SNK is usually pretty good about getting characters out at a solid pace. Guessing it's Jaie as he's a model swap of kim and was way more popular than hokutomaru and freaking mai is already the ninja in the game.

Is Smart Style not having feints and breaking really that big of a drawback? I was looking forward to the game because I heard it had Modern but I'm seeing ppl on twitter say Smart is really bad. I don't need it to win tournaments but I got up to 1700mr in SF6 with Modern Cammy so I'd like Smart to at least be able to do the equivalent of that.

Brakes are insanely good so kinda, but we don't know how good having the ability to pretty much insta dp or command grab with the easy inputs will be. Feints are also good but hard to tell.
I think some characters might actually be decent with the smart style, but the only way to be sure will be playing the beta

We've already seen King (or at least are pretty certain it's her). She's the short-haired blonde woman with the purple dress on the left side of the Street Stars bar. She's not even the only Art of Fighting cameo in that stage - Jack Turner has his own lounge on the second/third floor, and Lee Pai Long is hiding in the rafters.

Brakes allow players to get optimal combos, and Feints allow for pressure and even combos for some characters. Smart style losing them would be a hit, for sure.

On the other hand, one button invincible supers/DPs with no damage penalty is still good, and will be good in COTW. However, I still think Smart style players need to do motions in order to properly guard cancel, aside from Rev Blow which is a two button input; this would be a very smart decision from the devs, because one button guard cancels would be extremely busted.

I don't think that's King because every AOF cameo has been a classic design. Hell, Bob's cameo is also a classic design. The only cameo that has an altered design is Raiden, and even then it's basically just his Wild Ambition design.

It's mostly because they know better than to radically alter a design for a background cameo it misses the point to have said cameo look almost nothing like a character and them to go "no yeah it's them" even if said character is like 20 years older now. Redesigns are saved for when a character's playable because that's when the spotlight is actually on them

People are far more familiar with King's designs than they are with Jack's or Lee's, since she's been in KOF this whole time, so it's acceptable to give King a new look and expect players to still recognize her.

Smart Style being locked out of Feints is good and I do think SNK should add a 20% damage tax like Modern in SF6 does, not sure why Oda and co think its fine that a beginner who practiced for hours to get his DP input down at the start should be doing the same damage as someone doing the simple input. That's just fundamentally flawed and it's going to make grapplers on Smart Style stupid. And ultimately it's not even good for onboarding. Motions having a reward incentives players to incorporate them into their game as they progress and makes the transition to legacy controls more natural.

On the opposite end taking away Brakes from Smart is a bit too much, it would be like taking away Drive rush routes in SF6. You can't create saucy combos without it and I think having something more optimal to do in smart than the autocombos is good for progression.

Heinlein siblings are probably something supernatural, but nothing in their background story implies they were anything but kids trying to survive South Town, the only thing that stood out was that Kain seemed to be unusually powerful for his age. But he has attacks with fancy names like "heavenly breath", "heavenly soul" and "heavenly gemstone", not really something that would be tied to vampires. No color red in his attacks, either.
If anything, he reminds me more of Elisabeth Blanctorche.

Verse, Re Verse and Otoma would have probably fared better had there been some explanation to why they were doing their thing. The visual designs were okay, and the gameplay of two Verses was okay. Otoma and her crystal attacks can go fuck themselves, though.

I just checked the footage again the logo is similar, but different so you're probably right

Interesting part is there's 3 characters left and Dream Amusement Park still doesn't have an associated character. It's probably Hokutomaru's Stage since I doubt something so peppy and lively is Freeman's stage. It could also be Jae Hoon's stage which would also be a bizarre choice. The game likely has an unplayable, Geese-like final boss given Geese's Tower is a confirmed stage or it's just the set dressing for the final fight with Rock and Terry

In Bison's case it was more indefensible since they were trying to wrangle him into working with modern controls, with Kain's case it's because red parry would have fucked him design wise over if he still had charge fire balls, and charge Schwarze Panzer.

That was true in MOTW, Kain was surprisingly really hard to play at top level because he couldn't reliably access JD guard cancels without doing charge partition, and in COTW with EX combos, and now red parry, he would been the worst character in the game and akin to 3s Remy had he kept full charge.

KOFXV ended up being the worst offender of the overuse of the grid of the recent offenders since even SF6 has a stage toggle and Capcom forces all of their pro tour tournaments to ban the stage.

I think that's probably why they were saved for DLC they clearly didn't have any plans to do anything more ambitious to justify them being base roster characters. They're fighting as if they always were while Terry/Billy have really fundamentally changed as people. Mai is a mystery maybe she's changed a lot too but I doubt it. These designs they whipped up were a little too NPCish, maybe if Joe wore his coat open and had his advertisement shorts that would be what he needed. Andy just needed a genuinely cool design for once

Plus unlike Terry, Billy and Mai whose characterizations don't really revolve around their fighting styles, Andy and Joe have always been more serious about how they fight

I don't disagree, I absolutely loathe SF6's newcomers as well. SFV didn't really have too many strong ones for me either outside of Laura, Rashid and Menat and of them I only really liked playing Laura. Again, I don't think legacy fighting games really need too many newcomers anymore because people want to play as the same handful of 90s characters anyway. out of almost every fighting game since 2009, probably the biggest and arguably the only lightning in a bottle design is a character visually inspired by surprise jojo's and that's juri and she has essentially graduated to mascot level, which is incredible of a feat whether you like it/her or not

I don't know the XIV designer but Sylvie's design is just Kyary from the Ponponpon video long after she became irrelevant which is why she was a dud. They changed her for the better though in XV leaning more into jirai-kei but I think they still put too much decora-kei fashion into it. The stained glass skirt is sick though.

I think Preecha is plenty ridiculous with the right triangle hairclips, that is so cringe it wraps around to being memorable to me. I think the previous design and Gai Tendo are bad because they kinda miss the point as to why Kazushi Sakuraba was so beloved in Japan, he was a relatively mundane looking japanese man surrounded by foreign fighters with ubermensch steroid freak physiques that were twice his size in PRIDE and beating them. That contrast was what made him so memorable at the time, and I think Gai Tendo being uberjacked or Preecha being this kawaii nerd genius loses that essence imo.

it's both simple and hard to find that really clever balance when it comes to designing a character that really gets people looking and talking

a female can be fet material or use sex appeal, but that's all she is, then she's just doing what every other attractive female character is doing and she'll blend into the background, and having an attitude of some sorts helps and that doesn't necessarily mean what you think it means when someone usually says "having an attitude" as there's a distinction between having some kind of attitude vs HAVING AN ATTITUDE

males are definitely harder to pull off if you want them to be super popular beyond "yeah they cool"
like there are characters who are just cool but they're just kind of there otherwise to serve as the vehicle for players or viewers and not much else, but then there are male characters who are at greater levels like kenshiro or rei, goku or vegeta, vash the stampede not the nu-anime or even nicholas d wolfwood, characters who have presence, charisma and aura
can't think of a male character in fighting games who really owned it and it's been the age of waifus honestly

like if you had to ask me on the spot who i think is one of the more standout male characters in fighting games, i'd most likely say iori yagami
there's a lot of moving parts to make a male character work, even if the surface of such a character like goku is pretty simple and straight forward, and a lot of that has to do with being able to give them a backstory that people can get behind and feel engaged in and a goal that means something and something valuable to them, and those are things not visible in the design itself, but in the way you present the design
that probably goes for females too, and actually, i might even agree that it does

As for the final boss I think they're doing a reference to AoF, Mr. Big can be related to the kidnapping of Marie just like he was with Yuri, he was always at odds with Geese over dominating South Town do he has all the motives to do it. He can be the sub boss like he was in AoF1 and 2, and then some mystery broken unplayable nigga is the real hidden boss (like Mr. Karate and young Geese)

Free or not, it's a wasted slot, since we're not seeing any big difference in the character right now to justify this action. Unless they play drastically different than they always have, I highly doubt it, at the end of the day they will still be Andy and Joe. They should be in the base roster, yes. Snk could have just replaced them both with Kain and another new character for this season 1. Something simple but would have had a better reaction than now. But Snk loves to make shitty decisions one after another. It's amazing.

They even tried to pretend Corrin was the character "before" Bayonetta when it was pretty obvious they settled on the latter before the former. Funnily enough even Terry would've been a better end to the first character pass just because of all the content he came with versus getting another Fire Emblem character. No wonder Samurai scraped together enough characters for a second pass

But I guess they weren't end reveals that left the game fucking dead like DBFZ or SFV. You know the devs hate their game with conclusions like that

Hokutomaru, Jae Hoon and Freeman should have been revealed by now. I'm sure we could've survived March/April with no reveals if they let the OBT last a little longer and actually put out more ads on YouTube/Streaming/TV/etc.

Now call me autistic but I kind of feel like SNK is playing a theme game with their pre-release which is why the last 3 characters haven't been revealed yet. Think about it, how many characters are in MotW? 14. That would mean Kain being the 14th character is thematically relevant this is the "end" of Fatal Fury as we know it and the last 3 characters are their "biggest" surprises (lord knows what they're cooking)

Anyway, themes:

Regardless of leaks I still don't think Tr4sh was going to really end on a solid note. They BARELY managed to make people appreciate Bowser Jr. because of the Koopalings, but the last couple reveals being Dr. Mario and by extension Dark Pit, who should've been shown off in gameplay in the Palutena trailer now that I think about it, really compounded the salt

They might even call Freeman something else entirely desu. snk has shown hints of 5 characters: duck king, king, hokutomaru, the fat masked grappler and marie howard, which marie's hints being the biggest one, the stage.
those don't fit the roster, only 3 spots left, there is an argument to say that none of those characters will be in the game at launch because they've been hinted, simply because there isn't space for all of them.
Marie Howard is the only character I 100% believe will be in the game's base roster, the other 2 spots could be anyone really, even hokutomaru isn't guaranteed.
