add more hover bikes as progress from previous post, last boss is a pro who rides a three wheeler.
bike on far left is player bike. Second left is desert guy you will race, followed by computer world guy you will race. finally, the farmer who is a challenge.

hope they are not looking to similar with each other, just added quickly today. Did the UV unwrap, but not with the texture yet.

Can do knick-knacks and trinkets on the hover bikes as decorations to each of them to add variety, since basic model is similar for them.

>fully made arcade machines (twin stick shooter game, full clone of crazy taxi, but as pizza)
>race the hover crafts with the new rivals you meet along the way (only after unlock the hover craft of your own)
>impress the bird fanatic, by taking remote control of the bird and poop on things
>go to the music store in the mall, play the instruments
>on friday evenings in real life, a band will load at the coffee shop, and they will perform a concert
>go to the meeting, take the side of your boss or the side of your coworker

some thing I don't know about, seeking advice... I have a parasol that is unlocked on the game, that allows you (the player) to glide across distances.
1) will it have a timer limit for glides? (like zelda botw)
2) will it require violence to unlock? (so far, idea is there is a character wearing this hat (pic), and you strike him down with a katana... then attach the parasol hat to the katana, thus unlocking the parasol)...not sure if violence is the answer in a game that otherwise has zero violence.

You should make this. I don't know of any games with this feel except maybe some of the mad max and mad max inspired games. But you can look up old photos of the baja 1000 for inspiration

If this >>514225601 is also you it would be interesting to have an open world off road driving game, but not post apocalyptic since that's been played out. I feel like there's a real gem somewhere along these lines

maybe itll be a fish, but the type of fish is octobus, since they are roughly parasol shaped. This octobus, for example, would make a fine parasol for even the rainiest of days.

100% convinced that every single person saying you need luck+marketing for your game to do well is delusional and can't accept they sunk months or years into some project that is average at best.
I have yet to see a genuine 10/10 game, not released in a terrible genre for indies, that sold fewer than 10000 copies.

Ye that is me, good eye mate!
I am letting some ideas simmer in my brain for now, mostly I want interesting gameplays and stylistically I want something prewar, not apocalyptic, just a lesser developed world and the rickety motoring of the past has inspired me too.
What seems fun is to make a challenging track with different kinds of surfaces and obstacles, more like a rally and less like a typical race. Preferably one long track with a couple of checkpoints and maybe some branching. Mostly the focus must be on how the vehicle behaves on the terrain, I want to implement physics that are interesting but not overly complicated and controls that make sense but also reward mastery, and level design that has a good risk/reward balance. So maybe the checkpoints can be gas stations where you can fuel up and get a score card for a segment.

Open world seems a little daunting to me at this point but who knows.

I have seen what I described above many times.
All these people complaining about not making it despite having developed a great game actually made a 7/10 game at best.
I agree that marketing and luck can give you a massive initial boost but if your game is great, it will eventually sell a lot.

what engine are you using? if you are on Unity and if you want, I can share with you my waypoints track system from my previous game (like crazy taxi, but as pizza delivery, with an arcade "race NPC drivers to the next delivery" mode)

it takes a city map of roads, and randomly creates a track at initialization, and there are "stops" but not gas you need to fill, instead it's restaurants and food trucks where you stock up on pizza.

Or, if not, I can at least share with you the method behind it so that your ventures will be easier.

Yes. People like being able to do things that they care about. Self inserting into a simulator makes them care about the tasks they are performing. It's a substitute for reality, with the same sense of meaning.

Why do clothes still look like absolute garbage in games? With all the advancements in lighting and geometry detail or even hair you would think we would have at least gotten past the single clothing folds texture stage.
The more recent Rockstar Games are one of the few exceptions that blend between textures for the folds at least.

I am thinking of going godot since I used it before but I am interested for sure!

Mainly because it's incredibly expensive to simulate in real time. But Epic has been working on some cool machine learning cloth tech that basically learns from presimulated offline fabric simulation and plays it back. I don't think any games are using it yet but it'll be in that new Captain America game.

basically it works like this (pic is a top down view of what roads in a city might look like)
pink dots all represent a waypoint (stored in an array), the orange dots represent the last waypoint before an intersection.

Each road section (any length of road in between two intersections) will have its own array of waypoints, with the first and last being waypoints that serve as intersection waypoints.

When it will generate a track, it will go section by section. So, road section 1 will be the start, and the "track" will follow it to the intersection waypoint. Then it'll go to whichever road section corresponds with where the intersection can turn.
At that point, it will decide "will the track turn left, right, or keep moving forward?" and then it will assign a direction, and the starting waypoint (usually the nearest intersection point of that path)

This works best to randomly create track paths that are "infinite" since it's pretty tough to tie it back to the starting point.
To change the direction of the waypoints, its as simple as reversing the array of waypoints.

in this game (the pizza deliver game), how I managed it was a destination address would be assigned as one of the waypoints locations, then the visuals for "deliver here" would appear.
The other cars would follow the current waypoint path they have stored (based on location of them, which road are they on, etc. not too different from the common kart racer AI systems many games use), but their ultimate goal would be to reach each deliver destination prior to the player.

problems are that, AI navigation is not as good as in a pre-set track. This is because that style can make use of splines that are pre-made, making the tracking for the AI kart more accurate. They're basically going to whichever is the next waypoint transform position, rather than generally following a premade line traversal.

If you ramp up traffic, you multiply sales. You can't multiply zero though. You game sales page has to be able to do that part. I was good at the conversion part. That's what I was paid for. Other guys literally did nothing but become experts on buying ads, web traffic, or mailing lists. Hell half the time the millionaires were just sending out emails to their other millionaire friend's customer lists. Having a list of people that already paid for something similar was like a license to print money for them.

It's one of the hardest genres to choose to do alone depending on your plans. I mean I'm literally just making a shmup and I have to do dozens of sprites, sound effects, stage music, menu and settings systems, and I literally have hundreds of files in folders at this point being worked on. - Writing is hard and you need to do a lot of it.
- A lot of systems with a lot of data + save-load.

What if I want my game to be an autistic simulator rpg?

What's so hard about an rpg, other than implementing the dialog and plot? Every time I see someone trying to code a dialog system or a plot system I see people using a giant array and switch statement. Toby Fox did it, that Pirate Software fag did it, but these could just be retard codelet problems

Is the content required above and beyond any other type of game?

>a bunch of environments like towns and dungeons

This was a 1MA game for the first few years of development. Graphically, it used to look much worse than what the storepage looks like now. He decided to sign with a publisher after making gaining too large of an audience for him to handle alone. This is true, but it's also not a new concept. I think people just haven't studied direct-response mail order history as much as I have. I was really obsessed with this stuff. I'd have libraries order in rare books that weren't even sold anymore. I watched people shift into seo marketing, ppc, twitter, facebook, and so on. Usually what happens is people make a quick buck and then it gets really tough to manipulate the system. The people who have really long tails in their sales are often people that simply produce something honest worth buying. If you make a game worth buying, it will continue to sell for a very long time. I think that's what you're getting at and I agree with that.

I'm not going to comment since what people consider an RPG is highly subjective. For me, an RPG is like WoW or Eye of the Beholder. A story isn't required and a lot of the time they get in the way (because the designer doesn't know how to write or design). However, a great story is what changes it from a game to an experience and it provides the player with a lot of motivation to explore all aspects of the game.

Hone your skills, erics early pixel art was absolute shit but he improved tremendously through practice
Do whatever it takes to keep your project going till it becomes something good you're proud of, don't release something half done just because it might feel youve been spending way too much time on it. Eric even got a part time job when their savings were running out despite all the external pressure to just release the damn game earlier
Make something you're genuinely passionate about, stardew was not some machievallian scheme to exploit a gap in the market, it's the product of a genuine harvest moon fan making the game wanted to play after the franchise fell off

"Farming game" is a misnomer. The successful ones are slice-of-life town-sims. They only become "farming games" because farming is typically the most meta money making activity in those games. An Animal Crossing-like with minimum farming also makes tens of millions. Cropulation is not a town sim.

I played the (pre?)alpha before it caught on and it was pretty fun. then the chinese hacking started and I quit playing. fighting over scraps with your bros at your side, airdrops creating a mini deathmatch from time to time. tension of finding a good hiding spot for your base and coming back the next day hoping it is still there unraided. idk if it's still like this, probably not?

I was stuck in a "startup" that involved a kid trying their absolute best at figuring out how to press "New Project" in both Unity and Unreal Engine but he had such strong passion that he was going to make a Destiny 2 killer that he got his high school buddies and made a team of about 50+ "developers" where they all just sat and cried about how hard life was the entire time. A friend and I were invited and we were the only ones to actually make deliverables after being promised pay for it and then at the very last second that kid decided we should've been honored to work on his game so we shouldn't have expected any pay. As far as I know, that game is now just a thing in that kid's head because he's too busy trying to find a way to share his ultimate story (proving that autism/mental illness isn't real, that you can defeat depression with hard work, and that cancer can be solved if only doctors weren't so lazy) and to find the ultimate monetization scheme so that he could make billions but also make it free for everyone to play so he could donate to charity.

Nah, the problem with shading like that is not that it's not doing volume right, it just faulty antialiasing. Gives off an immediate mspaint vibe the rest of the picture doesnt.

i wanna rephrase one of my posts from a few threads ago
i think single-player non-competitive games should have less extrinsic focus on pushing themselves (e.g. locking non-cosmetic rewards like weapons, levels or characters behind rank, time, or score requirements or other more specific tasks) and instead make high scores be their own reward by making playing well just inherently, viscerally satisfying
but conversely, i don't believe such rewards should be blocked off from the player for any non-diegetic reason, i.e. other than story progression, finding them in the game's world, or overcoming enemies or obstacles therein.
the reason for all this being that i believe that players usually have the most fun when they are given lots of choices in ways to progress, and that while all of them should be able to progress through the game reliably if not easily, the differences in the way they work should be enough to encourage replayability through experimentation, and then further through practice and the building of skill

tldr; you should be able to unlock everything in a game just by playing through it and knowing how everything works, and skillful play coming from that resulting understanding - measured via score, time, or other records - should be its own reward
games should be a playground, but players should be able to challenge themselves if they want

there are definitely parts I enjoy, it takes making a very very replayable, fast iteration game which is possible. It also takes keeping UI and graphics minimal. Not common but 100% possible. My games generally fit this criteria, and allow for limitless improvement in gameplay so I can still enjoy playing them. Making new levels is fun, playing them with other players is fun. Pushing my times lower on my levels is fun too

Anyway, The Witness has nothing of that. After you play a puzzle game, the most you'll watch is someone else playing for their first time, which quickly becomes stale. The game simply has no content creation potential which is why it's impossible for it to stay in the algorithm even if JBlow tried forcing it by paying out people to make videos or stream the game (which isn't needed because the game was already popular, it just really doesn't have any long term content potential).

Depends on your artstyle. Half life is kitbashed photos for instance. Besides that, texture size isn't a problem unless you're doing 2k+ resolution. Besides, you can use many forms of compression to lessen the memory useage.

I'm not very experienced with modeling but I tried shooting my own textures from life and it's kind of fun, you can always crop and resize your photos so that's not really an issue, good lighting is pretty important but it feels like it may be more work than painting them by hand if you have those skills.

It still takes a considerate amount of time to go through 2200 games to reach the good 400 ones, assuming people will actually "try" to see them all and not just stop after the first 20. (Or much more likely, they'll just play the top 20 in the list and not bother with anything past)
The less entries there are, the higher chances someone sees your game.

Consider taking a look at the visual novel horror game Higurashi. His character art is very amateurish, but he uses photos for backgrounds which may inspire you.

you just bake a texture from this and its seamless, tiling, and you can split off the metal material for example to reuse for some other details
this took me 2 minutes. of course you could spend fucking hours making this better, for example

It is my honest belief we're going to have less than 400 games hitting 1000 reviews or higher soon. Imagine that 30k game's releasing but <400 games hitting 1000 reviews. Gamedev is getting saturated and fast. This isn't the only field suffering this, it's almost like a mentality spreading worldwide into various fields. Overall my blame is the normies, they're invading so many fields. Combine that with

>twitch streamers
>twitter
>reddit
Places where they can get that sweet, sweet desired attention from society "look at me, look at me, I'm making a game! shower me in praise and money!"

I'm not happy about this situation. All I had to do was start an extra 10 years earlier and it wouldn't matter that this horde of people showed up. Once you've established yourself as a popular gamedev, you've got people buying your game's for years to come so long as you put effort into them, they don't even have to meet the high bar that new unknown gamedev's have to meet.

the rope is made of multiple 1-meter-long segments overlapped, with a knot at the end. if i just scale the root of all that stuff it won't be too fiddly to get it to look OKAY

the main driving forces in any game is is either stress or boredom.
any type of game that is popular on steam falls into those 3 categories.

category a) problems come directly at you (e.g. tower defense, vampire survivors, tetris) - those games work well for indies, because they don't require exploration and world building, you just are somewhere and the problems come at you. this type of game uses stress in order to engage the player. the big fat con of this genre is that it is heavily over-saturated.

category b & c) you are forced to go at problems, otherwise literally nothing happens. the main driving force of this type of game is boredom. boredom needs to be the default state of this game, in order to make people want to explore the world.

b) you need procedural generation in order to create enough world to explore for the game to be interesting, you need to make exploring the world stressful. enemies attacking you when you search for resources etc. (terraria, factorio, rimworld)

c) you need to build a nice world with lots of assets, a story etc. (the typical AAA game)

my conclusion is that if you aren't a very good artist and writer, then you are basically stuck with type B. you need to master procedural generation in order to make players want to explore your world.
in some sense type b is like type a, just that you control the speed at which problems come at you. but they require the player wanting to explore the world in order to achieve a goal. whereas in type A it's only about surviving the incoming problems.

the only future i see for type a games is revolutionizing it in some way. that would require finding other mechanics than just combat. the biggest strength is that the world is stationary and you things you come at you. you don't need to design a world, just the center of the world.

if you ever feel like gamedev isn't possible solo. i did (instrumental) music before and also got hardstuck when i realized making hit songs is impossible alone.

the problem is you approach the whole thing wrong. you look at team projects, where all profits are divided by team members etc., but those are completely different projects than what you should be doing.

you need to do things that you can do solo. and those things wont end up being big hits. but since you are just a solo dev, you don't even need a big hit to have success. e.g. if you need 20k per year to survive, then making 200k means your game feeds you for 10 years. if you sell your game for $10 and you make ~$5 profit per sale, then you only need to sell 40k units. this is far from being a hit game. if you sell it for $20 ($10 profit) then you even just need 20k sales to survive 10 years.

you really need to be careful what type of games you use as a reference. you need to know their budget, their team size etc. - you need to be aware what you can do as a solo dev and what you can't.

the problem i see with many people here is that they are waiting to become the super-human who can replace a full team some day. let me help you out: it will NEVER happen. the problem isn't your skills or your discipline. the problem is that you HAVE THE WRONG GOAL.

pvp games are like 1000+ hour time sinks with friends forcing you to waste time.

Singleplayer or even co-op games can be played an hour a day for the gamer experience you need to make a good game yourself but pvp slop games are cancer cocaine that you notice most retards are addicted to and try to keep you addicted to with them.

And I say this with experience mind you (1000 hours CS:GO)(1000 hours halo pvp) (1000 hours dota) (1000 hours deadlock) (1000 hours PUBG) (1000 hours r6 siege) (1000 hours Tarkov) once I quit being addicted to pvp slop and got away from my online friends who do nothing but pvp games my dev time improved massively.

cozy games don't exist. i cannot find any game without problems that actually sold.
"cozy" is in reality just "doing the problems at your own pace". stress is created by ticking clocks, by problems coming at you, by having to react fast or you'll lose. "cozy" is just when there's no clock ticking, when there's no health bar, when you don't have to react.
e.g. solving a puzzle is cozy cause you can do it completely at your own pace, even if it takes 10 years.
how you present your problems is what defines the genre.
and ofc there's the "color" of the game, which is the art style, music, sound design etc., which should ofc match the gameplay.

Papers Please is a unique game because the developer didn't start with an existing game formula as the base and expanded on it, instead he started with a real life experience he wanted to translate in the video game medium. Yes you could argue that "you click on things with the mouse it's kinda like an adventure game it's not 100% original" but that's just being reductionist and missing the point being discussed.

I dont think Thronefall looks like slop. It has a well defined and cheap to make artstyle while still looking good. The concept isn't really novel but adds some new ideas. Its genre is also a good fit for steam. Also anyone here could have made Thronefall scope wise but didn't. It's also well balanced from what I've heard from friends. I think Thronefall is great motivational material for any solo developer.

Literally the best advice I've had is to learn about dopamine and how it increases and decreases. I can even see how games I like increase my dopamine now that I understand it more.

I've boiled it down to 5 key points
>Challenge - dopamine increases when we feel challenged and know we have a % chance at winning or losing and not just winning or losing all the time with skill alone

I analyzed a bunch of those and what I can observe:
The successful games have more systems in place. E.g. systems to upgrade something, systems to build something, loot systems/inventory systems.
And they have a main goal with branched of secondary goals.

The ones that perform poorly mostly focus on one problem only "e.g. only shooting", which doesn't result into a graph of problems. Also they lack systems. It's really just about moving around doing one action over and over again. Those types of games fail even harder when the graphics don't look nice or when the music is bad. Or when the theme/style is boring.

designing your game to motivate the player to play it more is the difference between a flop with 10 minutes average playtime and a smash hit with 30 hours

well said, dopamine generation seems to be the key element of game design
if you can make the player feel excited to pursue something, they will play your game
that's really what it boils down to
this is why i think incremental games are so addicting, you're constantly chasing the next upgrade to your completely meaningless factory or army or whatever because human beings intrinsically enjoy the feeling of making progress

I think familiarity is a big part of that. Almost everyone enjoys Minecraft, because it's full of familiar stuff that we intrinsically recognise regardless of our age/sex/location.

I think farming/wood cutting/crafting/building are integral to our lives who ever we are. I would even go so far as to say that humans who enjoy farming/crafting/building evolved through natural selection against those who didn't want to farm/build/craft.

and these are just games off the top of my head
lots of cheap consumable dopamine generators out there, no need to risk a $30 50 hour experience when i can press the win button, get a dopamine hit, and go back to work
these games are basically drugs at this point

ofc it's comedy.
but then it also has systems:
digging system
loot system (finding ores, chests etc.)
shop system to upgrade your gear

what is the big goal? digging to the bottom of the hole. small problems? upgrading your gear, digging more.

it's a very distilled game, but it works exactly in a way that fits into my theory of what makes a game appealing. i cannot find those clear patterns in failed games.

holy shit this hits home. just like gamedev making their own games because they don't like other games, yet they end up being nodevs or making shitty abandonware.

i'm glad you say this, because a guy on youtube who successfully consults game studios and helps them design games from boring flops to major hits, said that the most enjoyed genre on steam are real life simulator games with rapid progression systems and open ended approaches
convenience shop simulator or something like that
people absolutely love these games because instead of spending 10 years building up a successful shop, you can do it in 30 minutes and receive the same dopamine hit, the same sense of accomplishment

i think you're on to something with this idea of meaningful and intuitive progression systems and goals to pursue

Reaching the goal is important though. Yes, the biggest dopamine high is before you reach it, but if you know the goalpost will move away and you won't actually get the reward at the end, your dopamine levels will actually dive really hard and you'll lose all desire to chase it. So you can't abuse this for infinite dopamine by delaying gratification indefinitely.
