Are there any horror games where the main playable character is a child? I'm kind of sick of horror games where the MC is a some gruff bearded guy who kills zombies for breakfast and it makes sense for the MC to be weak in horror games

It took me around 6 days to figure out how to code my own 2D fighting game input buffer.

Turns out the solution was pretty simple.
You simply have one buffer for all the D pad signals, another that only take into account the ortho d pad signals, and another buffer for the buttons and another to checkout how long have you been pressing the d pad.

And then simply using the ortho buffer for shit like
DP and hadouken and the full buffer for shit like double taps and diagonals and down charges.

If you think of other games as animal species and how you'd use those games to find ideas for your own game. Then it probably makes much more sense to only copy properties of them.
E.g. when you see a spider in the wild, as a human, does it make sense to try to become a spider? No. Because a) it wouldn't improve yourself and also b) you simply can't shapeshift into it.
The same counts for games. You can't shapeshift into the person or team that made the other game.
BUT, you can copy something. E.g. a spider uses a net to catch prey. You can do that too, you can use a net now to catch animals or fish.
You basically now extended your abilities with something a spider does. Instead of copying the whole thing, you copied what was useful for you.
Now you turned into your own species kinda, at least in behavior. You are now some sort of human spider hybrid.
So, if you want to find new ideas, do this. Do not copy other games but extract things out of them. And then combine all those things to become your own species.

Does anyone have any experience with publishers? How much money they took, what services they offered, etc. etc. Do we have any accounts from aggydevs?
I know everyone has horror stories of publishers stealing all the profits and not doing anything passed by word of mouth, but I'm also interested in hearing it directly from people who actually worked with them.

Fill an environment with various items. They can be random, or they can follow a theme that matches the environment.
Everyone in the lobby is given a different arbitrary task to perform using the items available in the environment.
For example, a player might be given the task to create an explosion, and they might complete this task by finding a box of matches, striking one, and dropping it into the fuel tank of a vehicle.
Nobody knows what another player's task is unless they outright state it.
Players are able to interfere with each other to try to prevent others from performing their assigned tasks.
Any player that doesn't perform their task within the round's time limit is eliminated and unable to move on to the next round.
Each round, a single player is randomly assigned the role of "menace". The menace's goal is to prevent at least one other player from completing their task. If all players that have a normal item-based task succeed, the menace is eliminated.
A single other random player is assigned the role of "hero". The hero's task is to make sure that all players with item based tasks complete them, and that the menace fails to stop them. The menace will of course lie and pretend to have a normal task .
When three or fewer players remain, the menace and hero roles will no longer be assigned.
Play continues until a single player remains.

people hire you to clear buildings. you can pick between small and big jobs. you have to start small to buy better equipment etc. and you work your way up to clearing huge hospitals and shopping malls. you also have a limited size inventory and they allow you to loot whatever fits in your bag as you clear the building.

i actually decided this year that i want to make money. somehow i always was interested in gamedev and made several small projects, but i never had the goal to make money.
i feel like without the goal to make money you don't take it serious enough and it just goes nowhere.
the biggest problem is that you just conveniently avoid anything that isn't interesting enough to you. this way you can delude yourself that you are a good gamedev, because you only measure your success in your ability to do your small little projects.
it's about setting higher goals forcing you to have higher standards.

if you need it - here's how i did it in an abandoned project

you basically listen for direction inputs in update, if they change from frame to frame you store them in a stack or list

when the player does use any kind of punch input you compare it to a list of (directions + punch type) to find if the combination was valid

a game is a frequency.
shooting? fast frequent actions, noises that are high in acoustic frequency, noises repeat often.
we consider it "action".

farming? lots of walking with nothing happening, noises are intentionally damped/cozy/cute, noises are not that frequent, we consider it relaxing.

every game needs tension or release. so it doesn't just work to make a game boring to make it relaxing.

in stardew valley you also have actions like planting and harvesting which require more high frequent actions (cutting over and over, planting over and over).
but the baseline tension is really low. so it's considered cozy.

you basically need to fine-tune the frequency at which things happen. if you'd e.g. need to harvest stuff under time pressure, now the frequency goes up because you have to hurry and suddenly it becomes more stressful.

you could argue a genre has it's frequency range, just like radio stations. and you shouldn't leash out into other frequency ranges.

that's why you don't want a doom-like shooter inside a farming sim. it's like wildly going off frequency.

actually everything the player experiences is a rhythm/frequency. and you need to figure out which range your game is in and then make sure the player experience the whole range in a rhythmic pattern that makes sense.

predictability and uncertainty also is a concept that comes from frequency and rhythm. uncertainty is when you can't predict the rhythm, and predictability is when you were able to predict how the rhythm keeps progressing. you can also play with that.

actually you are making music when you are making a game.

Why do people turn a blind eye to how many benefits they are enjoying off a virtual product, and proceed to cry about the very few demerits? It's not just your post, I see a shitton of artists cry about how the illustration they made and posted in a public space (twitter) was "reposted" somewhere else. Not even stolen or sold, just reposted for view enjoyment, and they cried as if they're only ones who should be able to do it.

Sometimes I feel like I'm the only person alive who still remembers a time without mainstream internet.

Stardew Valley is a good game that people enjoy playing. Not the easiest thing to do, and without an engine I might add.

I know it seems like it would be easy and relaxing but it's not. Coming up with quest ideas is initially not that hard, but the more quests you have and the further you progress into the plot, the harder it becomes. As for actually implementing the quests, it's a lot more work than it seems, especially if the player can affect the outcome of the quest beyond completing/failing it.

Yeah I'm obviously not going to say that literally everyone is incompetent and has no idea how to reproduce their success, just meant the average GDC post mortem video. The best ones I found were about explaining the technical aspects of their implementation IMO, like Halo one, or Destiny multiplayer one. Or just war stories about how the game came to be like the Diablo 1 one.
I don't know if the devs you mentioned did any actual post-mortems either, at least concerning their game design approaches. Romero's book was just about their lives and the making of the game but I don't think anybody there preaches about their game design.

This mirror plugin doesn't seem to allow for a scrolling noise texture on the distortion though, so if you look really closely the spheres' mirror image is distorted in the same way in the same position.

Just an update, but I got it canceled by support and got a full refund + a 10% discount.

This is just a cautionary tale to anyone wanting to use firverr, and some security to that you will get your money back for scams if you have proof. Funnily enough, it took him almost 2 weeks to give me that slop, but took him only a few hours to give me all the directions (still missing idles) after making a big deal about how he would have to start over and it would cost me more money and blah blah. Text book scam.

Thanks to anons here for convincing me to cancel fully. I was almost a retard because I almost felt bad and was about to give him atleast half.

Yea this is kinda normal on Fiverr, some people just take on gigs they can’t handle, or don’t put in good effort. You won’t lose money on it, it just can be a small hassle to resolve the situation.
With time you get a feeling for who’s trustworthy and who’s not, the more trustworthy people will usually ask some good questions before taking on a project and already discuss what kinda shortcomings to expect if any. The bad ones just say "I can do that" in broken English and then deliver something vaguely related.

ThIs the real artist and even does commissions (closed for now tho). Idk how much he/she charges, and there is a 95% chance that if you do commission them they will NOT give you full rights of owner ship to the OC you create with it, but atleast the real artist is there as an option.

Or, just Use AI and produce the same results desu. Most likely they are using AI aswell. The only issue with AI is turning the sprite into an actual sprite/animation sheet for use in a game. There is a program that specifically does this, pixellab.ai, but ive never tried it to see how good it is at animating a single sprite.

Looks like someone noticed the gamedev edge someone else had with their paid hidden object game and made a ton of them, likely to somehow capitalize on it even though it's free. There was a dev team, husband and wife who would make games like this. Don't think it was fast either. They sold them for money and had alright sales. Seems this dev team (I doubt it's an individual with how many there are), caught on and started making a bunch for free.

This behavioral trend is getting really frustrating. I can't even risk buying an app ID and putting info about my game on the page, considering the views I would get, I'm sure Valve employees monitor your game during it's private state. It wouldn't be out of the question for one of them to leak information about your game to someone capable and have them clone it. Or even just cloning it themselves.

The game being a stuttering mess and requiring really high end hardware for some reason are both very true. The game also uses smoothed mouse movement instead of raw input (which I don't personally care about desu) but FPSfags get their panties in a twist about it.

Also if anyone ever looked for where to cap the fps, you have to turn on the advanced options to find it. I capped it to 10 to test something and it gave me nostalgic memories of playing skyrim on my old shitbox pc in 2012

Has anybody been moved by my words and tried the Chicken scheme + C combo with a TCP REPL? Shit is honestly crazy, programming a game while it runs. It has been a goal of mine to get something like this working for a while (obviously, I copied someone else for the most part).

Had originally the idea for playable arcade games within the game, one of which was a racing oriented game. Still keeping the arcade machines, but the racing game is now more fleshed out

In one of the levels/areas of the game, you now are rewarded with unlocking a hover bike, which then can be used to race various NPCs throughout the game. These NPCs will be in different levels/areas, so the race itself will take place in unique areas, styled after where the racer resides (so, desert scene racer, will race in desert. magical forest racer, will race in forest)

Not too much of bloat or feature creeps, either, since the logic for the vehicles movement can be stolen from my previous game, which was a game all about driving, and already had AI that follows waypoints, so can easy recreate to work on a track. Worst of all will be the fact that I now will need to make new scenes to host the race.

create console commands of some sort to alter the inventory while testing. that way each area wont need its own configuration, just a command to populate inventory w/ whatever.

A big streamer has been playing this game for the last three days, with other streamers and youtubers copying him, but the game only gained three reviews. I believe this is because although the game is receiving attention, the gameplay or game experience does not generate emotions within the viewer, and they feel zero desire to interact with the game.
It's not enough for people to witness your game, raw exposure isn't everything. People need to feel an emotion as a result of the game, which will then incentivize them to play the game, so they can experience that emotion to a greater extent. This game makes people feel nothing. This is why the exposure failed to convert to sales.

I think a real problem with the whole visibility and algorithmic marketing discourse in this general is that people like you are too retarded to understand long term payouts. You think every game needs to sell all of its copies instantly at release, or it's a flop. You think the instant a big streamer loads up a game, his entire audience needs to have played the game for a hundred hours and reviewed it or that visibility is worthless. Decided to finally start working on a prototype for a game after a long time of saying I want to make games, but not doing so. Love2D is pretty comfy, I managed to do this today.
Idea is to make a platformer with some Ghost Trick-like mechanics. Basically playing as a robot that can take control of other robots or machines, in order to beat levels. Probably more of a puzzle/platformer.

Idk what happened but I don't feel too great today. Just started feeling rather exhausted last night while working on my game. Can't tell if it start before or after I ate those meat sticks with a "use within 7 days after opening" it's been a few months and they still taste good, I just remove the tips that look discolored now unlike the remainder which looks normal. Hope it wasn't that, and I doubt it. Arm feels sprained, left butt cheek feels strained like I was sitting weird for hours. So much time spent all for a single asset to be animated. I hate this. Of all the things to do for my game animating certain kinds of movements is sooo hard. I worked on it the day prior too and it came out terrible that time. It at least looks good now. I think that may be the alternative cause of not feeling so good rather than the meat sticks I ate. Exhausted from spending so much time on a single asset and so focused that I was sitting with poor posture.

Uggh I need to adjust the animation further as certain movements need to be removed for a more convincing look. Thanks for listening to me vent.

I'm going to make a walking simulator but instead of walking you will drive and instead of simulator it's going to be an arcade game.
But one question, what would be a good way to implement delicate steering on a keyboard? Or should I just expect people to have a wheel controller?
