and i don't mean putting mai shiranui in there and calling it a day
i mean putting in a new character that attracts lots of curious attention
and even then it's not that simple
it's about the experience and engagement of playing as a character like that in the game and making that character feel alive in the game in some way, or else it's back to blender porn for you and that new character

CoTW's biggest selling point for non KOF players is that it's a 1v1 fighter with only hop for a more traditionalish neutral, this will probably be the first time Rock is played by people willing to give a SNK fighter a chance.

As I argued before, why didn't Bandai Namco just demote Heihachi to simply not being a part of the story while keeping him for stuff like multiplayer, time attack, and other modes that don't require story? I doubt the Heihachi fanboys (and Harada) would have cared he wasn't in the story if they just wanted Heihachi back at all.

Even then, you can just do this shit and that would literally please everybody. You get your super hype character and it doesn't break the fucking lore in half and retroactively ruin like over a decade of storytelling. Kong Kuwata/Richard Epcar, Geese's JP/EN voice, was the announcer for the CotW trailers up until the Billy trailer so we know Geese is going to be involved in CotW regardless if he comes back to life or not

Whoops forgot to reply >>513500716 but I get to post my second pic to prove a point. Mulling it over I started asking myself "why did SNK call the only available version of the game Special Edition?" because there's no real reason to suggest it's anything but the normal game with the DLC Pass available for free. Usually SNK only ever uses the term Special for Dream Matches in their games. Given the Garou roster is base game and Ken and Chunners are DLC, it makes me very curious about the rest of the DLC

The ironic thing is, they already once did exactly that. He "dies" in Tekken 5's intro but is still playable, and Tekken 6 later confirms that his appearance in that game was literally non-canon. So it's not like there isn't already precedence for just straight up having 'What If' characters.

Heihachi and Bison coming back was obvious and inevitable. The problem is that they didn't let those characters stay dead for at least a game + their DLC cycles or two before bringing them back. They came back way too early which invalidated a lot of any potential.

I feel like my meter expenditure is all wrong here (lol @ popping quickmax just to spend two bars' worth anyway) but I couldn't think of a better way to extend for stun. Sucks that sequencing prevents normal follow-ups off dp+K from working in this combo, rekka drops, EX rekka doesn't follow up, etc.

If this game has all of the OG essentials like Terry, Andy, Joe, Mai, Billy and Geese that'll feel like how SF6 had all of the OG World Warriors back in its S1 bar T. Hawk and Fei Long because fuck them. Except, you know, this game actually HAS Garou characters while SF6 doesn't have a single SFIII character because, you know, fuck them

The DLC will be canon because they have planned out 3 years worth of content for CotW. This isn't like KOFXIII/XIV where the DLC characters there deliberately contradict the base game roster/story. I'm pitching the idea that they're using the term Special as a way to get the idea that this Fatal Fury is both canon and a Dream Match the same way KOFXV is. They're including characters that are going to be important to the story, but also feel "impossible" the same way a Dream Match would bring in radical characters that you wouldn't expect to be in the game. There's a high possibility we could also see Mr. Karate II or an Iori who wasn't cursed by Orochi since these are also characters that have precedent being in previous Fatal Fury Specials too

I'm unsure if they'll be S1 ideas though because as it stands now there's still 4 completely unknown characters and we don't know who is going to round out base roster along with Hokutomaru and Kain

Iori was in a handheld spinoff. That doesn't count. Mr. Karate II isn't a stretch either because Art of Fighting shares the same continuity as Fatal Fury, so old Ryo would be a viable character, but that would steal Marco's thunder.

I'm more worried about Ken than Marco though. While Marco is directly Mr. Karate II's disciple, having another Shoto makes it more difficult to focus on Kyokugen practitioners. That being said it can be no real different than the contrast between Ryo/Mr. Karate I/Takuma. SNK isn't really shy putting a lot of Kyokugen users in their games

Likely lost source code. It was a JP PS1 exclusive version of RBS without lane changes so it's sort of an afterthought in the grand scheme of things. Most people just play RBS or RB2

MI did it because Falcoon is an SNKhead and wanted to do his own OC story using the source material. If anything Dominated Mind kind of reads like a prototype of Garou since Alfred was kind of being shilled as the new protagonist after Terry. It's a shame they didn't really write anything more about his character outside of "the new protagonist outside of Terry" so that shit went fucking nowhere

It's such an insane decision because T7 already had no story outside of Kazuya vs. Heihachi so to just backtrack on the one thing T7 had going for it feels almost like a joke. The whole point of Marco is that he is third-generation Kyokugen-ryuu Karate. Takuma, Ryo, Robert and Yuri all flow into him. He is Kyokugen in the Fatal Fury era.

Now a big reason why Tung's disciples don't use Hakkyoukoseiken moves (along with him usually being playable) stems from the fact even though he taught these characters, they branched off of his teachings into their own styles like Terry's street fighting brawler style, Andy's Shiranui Ninjutsu, Geese using Great Nipponese Daitō-ryū Aiki-jūjutsu grapples and Cheng using Tai Chi because he's fat and that's really funny. In contrast to these adults who have fleshed out their fighting styles, Chonrei was possessed by his ancestors (where his fighting style came from) and is 14-16 tops in Fatal Fury. By the time CotW would happen, he'd be in his late 20s and a fully fleshed out adult which is the perfect justification for such a massive shift of character. The fact you can combine Chonrei's light show techniques with actual Chinese Martial Arts would make him closer to a Dragon Ball reference, which Tung already was, and I think people would be very interested in a FF Vegeta. The harder sell honestly is Chonshu, because they paired him up with Kim and whoops we already have two Kims

I don't consider him likely any time soon, but I do consider this the perfect opportunity to completely reboot FF's most underwhelming antagonist

Neither of the Jins started getting trained until after this era. It's the RBFF2 ending where Tung starts training Chonrei. He also gets Kim training along with Chonshu but Tung's ending has him do the traditional Kung Fu training regime alongside and KOFXIV references him as a disciple. We've never seen what either Jins are up to post RB2 since Garou wiped the entire slate clean

Which is mostly because fighting games are pretty shit in terms of content or characterization. Even then SF6 took 2 years to hit 1 million sales so it's not like people are actually eating up that game in droves, the global appeal is doing most of the heavy lifting and I think the game would've been better if they were adding characters that they actually like instead of whatever the fuck Season 2 is. Being a MotW sequel is the biggest appeal of the game so as long as they don't muck up the story this is the biggest opportunity they have to hit the ground running. The biggest misstep is more so not trying to lock a Switch 2 port since what you said, but it being multiplat and on PC with crossplay out the box supplements the issue at least

SNK is expecting esports to carry CotW but they really should be focusing on the casual base a little more since they'll fall off after a month if the game doesn't launch substantially enough. Episodes of South Town seems interesting but I hope it's less of a diversion and more of a way to expand the game like World of Light was trying to. It's a game where the little things build into a greater whole compared to what they've previously released

I get the feeling they still treat KOF as a vein to pump blood from so they can give life to their other IPs and either XV finally gave them enough funds to fund more ambitious games or XV was the last straw and KOF no longer is profitable. We just don't know. We do know that Oda wanted to bring back Fatal Fury 10 years ago, and finally has, so we're getting a genuine red carpet game more so than either XIV or XV were. SamSho didn't even get this much attention from SNK and they seemed pretty proud of that game too

KOFXIII is less trying and more finishing what they started. That game didn't sell worth shit because they fucked up by releasing it before it was done and there was no saving that game. And of course every time they rerelease it people say they're going to play it this time and fucking don't. More people play XV at the end of the day regardless of its faults because even if it came across as incomplete or unambitious, it's still generally a more fun game and has more toys to work with than the graphically ambitious game that has four headswaps

XIII's and XIV's "success" if anything likely showed SNK that KOF sells because it's cheap to produce and is a sideshow at the end of the day to SNK's more creative IPs. A return to the success of 90s SNK means KOF isn't top dog anymore, or ever should have been in the first place. The fact is this is the best time ever to be an SNK fan in the last 20 years even with all of their still fresh fumbles

Anyway regarding the working stupider, it's the fault of KOFXII and them planning shit out stupidly and needing to revamp the game mid-development getting one extremely half-baked game and one game that still has a doughy midsection. Instead of off the bat planning a KOF soft reboot with their HD sprites featuring Orochi Saga characters because apparently those characters sell, they were planning a genuine Ash Saga finale without Yuri, King, Mai, K', etc. unironically and pivoted mid-development to get what we got instead

The game was doomed to fail regardless if KOFXII was delayed to be finished like XIII or not, especially since they already started planning the XIII roster mid-XII development realizing

could say in hindsight that a more classic looking kof for xii would have been better and more money saving, but snk should also train their smaller newer talent up by having them develop small indie level games, then work their way up while their efforts are judged and tweaked by someone more proficient, like "here's how to optimize what you did here, here's a more O(nlogn) way whereas you're doing O(n!) here for some reason"

DEI is only a portion of that game's problems. They'll never be able to replicate VII's success because they were actively trying to replicate VII's success in extremely surface level ways while thinking trilogies are still a good idea. That's my point. A true failure of a game is a game that doesn't get an expansion passed its Season 1. Similarly, MK1's future plans have been pretty frozen since S2 has been a breaking point and there just isn't enough interest to keep the game going. Sure you can scream DEI, but that's just the icing on top the shit sundae. This mostly comes across as a KOF issue because SamSho actually does bother to explain what its roster is doing during the events of the game while KOF doesn't even give us an introductory cutscene to explain why niggas are doing what. I can't really blame the Team stuff because the game HAS cutscenes and just chooses to have them exclusively for the handpicked "important" characters while everyone else you have to gleam through their endings. It doesn't help that SNK still designs games assuming everyone knows what Fatal Fury, Psycho Soldier, Ikari Warriors and ESPECIALLY Art of Fighting are

I think CotW will have a similar issue about forgetting to include some important character context, but I definitely think they'll at least give us actually interesting cutscenes this time given the Mai trailer. And I like that they've experimented with actual cutscenes in XV so things aren't a static back-and-forth between models like in XIV/SamSho so they might actually be able to pull it off this time

Outside of Japan COTW was on track to make a big splash (for an SNK game) but they wasted all that marketing momentum. After it peaked with showing Mai off, it's just flatlined currently. They didn't even take advantage of the Cristiano Ronaldo tease and they wasted the Ken and Chun-li announcements on no gameplay, no cinematic and not even new renders. I don't know what happened, for a while COTW marketing was firing on all cyclinders but now it's nothing.

It might just be due to the game not really having anything worthwhile to show off. After Episodes of South Town and Color Edit we haven't gotten anything but character trailers, and somehow last month didn't even have that despite them needing to reveal 4 characters in 3 months. It's nice they announced preorders are up, but people need more to sink their teeth into than just OBT to be interested. But that's on SNK. Personally the game pushes all my buttons on what I want so far. I'm a FF head more than a KOF head so MotW + the Classics was more than I was expecting and could ask for. MOTW for the break, feints, and just defend systems.
KOFXV for its combo structures, while COTW is purely EX move cancelling into each other, combos in XV still have a lot of special to special links.
SF6 for its meter management and the REV system being comparable to the drive system.

One thing SNK games is lacking is a black male char we can use for ntr roleplaying. Street fighter has Balrog and to a lesser extent Deejay and Birdie that can all fit the role while SNK has zero chars that could serve such a function.

Sure, Michael Max and Axel Hawk could easily work but they'll never be in a SNK game ever again/no one working up at SNK even knows who they are at this point. Then there is 2/3rd of the American sports who would be perfect but they too will never be another SNK game either. All we have left is Marco but he's too goofy and brazilian. Need someone who is more "nigga" black.

To be clear, FF:CotW uses the Rev gauge for different stuff than SF6 uses its Drive gauge. CotW has REV Blow (a unique command normal when you're in the SPG third of your health bar), which has a couple parallels to Drive Impact. Rev and Drive are also both used for EX specials. Most crucially, there is no equivalent to Drive Rush with the Rev system. Instead, there's Rev Guard, a special guard that has more block pushback and also negates chip damage; it's commonly compared to Guilty Gear's Faultless Defense. There's also Just Defend guard cancels, where you can cancel a JD/Hyper Defense with a special/REV Blow or stronger at the cost of a bit of Rev meter.

When I was watching VODs of COTW gameplay, it looked like the defensive mechanics constantly forced interactions to go back to neutral so there's already a huge difference between how COTW is approaching defense compared to everything else out on the market currently.

Not really I would say it's this way only for KOF. I think people forget that KOF will never change the characters from other franchises, Fatal Fury teams always have an ending about money or something related to Pao Pao Cafe in there, and AoF is always about the dojo or the BBQ thing.
I feel like the complaint about the outfit is more from people that know her from KOF or just know her because she's Mai. I'm happy about her, Joe, Andy and Billy having new outfits (even though we don't know if Joe and Andy will be playable at launch) and having the story moving forward. I also don't know how it will work but I hope they use the episodes of south town thing to talk about what the FF characters that won't make into the game have been doing from their last appearence until MotW/CotW

Kensou had this thing with dragon spirit and Ron being interested in him, but it's Kensou, so that plot was dropped faster than Iori's panties around Kyo. Ikaris are also deeply tied to Leona's plot, so while they may not have a character development themselves, they at least have something to do that isn't going out for a drink.

Tizoc even with the throw bug can theoretically do okay in results since he is still a grappler with a focus on evasion at the end of the day, Rock and Freeman just don't have any potential explosive factor that they have that could secure them wins.

They only likely flopped on Krauser cause they ended up making Rugal who was basically the exact same character in terms of presentation. German/Austrian evil emperor that hosts a worldwide KOF just to flex. They clearly were trying to make him the ultimate main baddy which is why they made such a big deal about him being in Real Bout Special but I don't think he just ever stuck cause none of the bootleg Shadaloo of FF2 stuck

No he's his own thing, he doesn't even really function like Andy. Practicing Garou for Mai isn't really necessary since she's in every other game anyway. You might be better off playing KOF96-98 or NGBC/Console XI for Mai since she actually has her old moves back

I don't know, they immediately brought back Geese in the non-canon Special, a revamp of FF2, and then brought him back for real in FF3. I'd say Geese's popularity is what killed Krauser and not Rugal being a bit of retread.

Rugal, Geese's popularity and making Krauser's suicide canon cause they didn't want Fatal Fury to be a revolving door of death like other franchises were doing. Which is why the series ended up stuck in Dream Match hell before Garou. RBS wouldn't have an intro with this image if they didn't have some pride in Krauser back then. He was just playable in Team Boss the prior year too, dude was still a big deal by this point. But when Fatal Fury died, KOF continued to shill Rugal and Krauser never made a true comeback while Geese continued to persist in the limelight it completely tanked his popularity

Being non-canon and being Dream Match are two different things.
The point was that SNK had ideas of how to continue the series, not whether those ideas definitely were a part of a one big South Town timeline (one can question if it is even a thing at that point, considering that Buriki One was already retconning certain things and it's hard to imagine MotW going into Savage Reign/Kizuna Encounter in the future).

Is Buriki One even canon to Rnk/AOF and GD/FF since it retconned Ryo's birthdate and going with the Buriki birthdate (Ryo is stated to be 32 years old there, therefore you subtract 1999, where the game takes place and subtract it with 32 and you get 1967) would contradict RnK1/AOF1 being in 1978 (having Ryo be 32 in Buriki One an putting his birth year in 1967 as opposed to 1957 would make him 11)?

The truth is, there was an intention of it being "canon", but it doesn't matter. The answer to that question is whatever SNK feels like at the time of the question. They can say that Kim, Mai, Yamazaki and Xiangfei actually competed in FF1's KoF tournament. They can decide that AoF being set in late 70s sucks for using characters from there in games further in timeline and soft retcon their ages, as well as disregard AoF3 ending. And then after all that on the next day they can walk it all back.

It is not a problem by itself, AOF started as a period piece game in the first place. But it is a problem when you want to make Mr. Karate II a trendy and cool slightly older guy rather than a 40 something fossil.
An alternatives to that would be to either reveal as little as possible about certain and relative dates, as well as not telling character ages, or not to visibly use Ryo in that time period at all.

That will depend on where the promised RnK/AOF continuation will take place. If in the 2000s to tie with MOTW, Ryo/Mr. Karate II would be 51.

Though why the need to make a character really look his or her age? I mean, Terry still looked young at 35 in MOTW. Surely the same can be done for Ryo.

The old SNK plan was to set it in 80s and make it about ninjas or something, which could be interesting. But now, I won't be surprised if it would be set in-between games or be a remake instead.

Taking Fu'un into account throws another wrench in the mix. It's stated that Chun was given his hat by the legendary wolf, the series is supposed to take place in the first half of the 21st a century, so the latest it could take place is 2050. Taking that into consideration and Chun's age he ends up being around 3 years older than Terry at the least.
That would make stuff like people theorizing he's Rock out the window or if taken at face value some kid that was given Terry's cap since the kid would be as old/slightly older than Terry himself. I remember calculating this around the time KK's streams were still a thing.

Yeah I think this outcome was for the best. It's nice Andy actually looks good for once too. Hopefully he gets his old moves back since Mai has finally been freed from KOF hell. Including Mr. Big is a gigachad move that opens the possibility to actually have more than just the popular picks and helps significantly with the world building. Really feels like SNK actually cares about the writing compared to their contemporaries

Yes Mai has a better body in general in COTW, but COTW constricts and lifts up the breasts too much, which not only makes them look way less natural but due to her idle stance suspiciously hides more cleavage and gives them less realstate in comparison to her entire upper body, giving the illusion that SF6 is showcasing more. Even ignoring the tone difference of their fighters, SNK and NRS attract 2 different groups of players, SNK always focused on the arcade experience while NRS/Midway always focused on attracting casuals with gore & cinematics.
If Terry got in MK1 MKfags wouldn't care cuz he's "weebshit" while Scorpion on FF/KoF would be seen as a desperate attempt on SNK's end to bring in the western dudebro audience.

Pretty much. Along with Yamazaki and even Duck King, S2 basically writes itself. It's good futureproofing to actually cram all of the essentials like the MotW cast and the OGs like Andy, Joe, Mai and Billy so that you literally do not have to work on these characters after the fact

It's what I thought Capcom was doing with SF6 before they decided to waste their S2 on shit nobody cares about

And being fair on SFV's release schedule Season 1+2 focused on "story" characters and full on newcomers. It obviously didn't work, but it had a focus. SF6 feels the opposite where the launch game + S1 had focus but S2 absolutely just feels like them throwing shit at the wall and seeing what sticks. A completely filler ass season is less exciting when the biggest complaint with SF6 is how it feels stagnant despite its strong release. Bison was an unnecessary character to bring back Year 2 and Elena is one of the least interesting SFIII characters to be the first to come back I theorize it's because she's African since we haven't seen the second stage for the DLC Pass yet and less said about Mai's presentation, the better. Terry would've been cool if they actually made him work but being in SF apparently nerfed his utility making him the worst of the 3 characters released so far somehow

Where as CotW has all of its essentials in base game + its FREE S1 Pass and had enough room to squeeze in a really cool oldhead pick like Mr. Big who hasn't seen action since a 2008 Dream Match remake

Because Juri was lightning in a bottle and supplanted C. Viper - whom you could tell Capcom was betting big on because she appeared in Marvel vs. Capcom 3 - as the ambassador of SFIV. She was already getting Sagat-tier billing when she debuted, getting her own OVA and replacing C. Viper as Chun-Li and Cammy's new rival. Psycho-sexy Korean taekwondoka bitch filled a giant hole in Street Fighter's roster, and they've been riding that wave ever since.

Depends on what you're looking for but yeah Luke is pretty fun but if we gotta go with new gen protagonists I'd prefer Alex. I know grappler's aren't for everybody but he's got a fun and unique playstyle, would be a much better new-gen capcom rival for Rock than Luke, and honestly he just fits the South Town vibe a lot better.

I think it proves a point how SFV's newcomer roster was gunned down in a public execution along with the game, and that the only survivors were Rashid, a character Capcom was convinced to make by Harada, and Ed, a character who flopped initially and had to be fundamentally ground-up redesigned to even justify an inclusion in 6's DLC. Needless to say: People aren't playing legacy franchises for newcomers. We already have dozens of characters that need attention and waiting 3 years for DLC Passes to possibly include your main/fav is a horrendous feeling. Capcom's newcomers have been supremely miss outside of Juri so when the brand new game is 1/5 characters that won't be in the next game, people get significantly less excited about the future of your game in general. Yet they haven't learned shit

it's more so wrapping up the roster since all of the other Heroes and Rivals were already revealed. KOF falls flat when it comes to character reveals because the 3 characters that have to be on canon teams need to have some relation to one-another and that makes it tougher to include genuine surprises. Unless they go digging for literally whos, XV already spent most of its best reveals early on, on the Garou/SamSho Teams or a handful of the S2 singlets

Probably because it's a crossover game and SNK needs to actually work on their source material. I think people are more interested in Mr. Big coming back because he has more potential relevance to the story than the likes of Duo Lon or Hinako would have

Nothing that autistic happens in Fatal Fury it's been a grounded kung fu movie with the closest thing being the Jin twins being possessed by their ancestors. Geese coming back once is a one-and-done thing in FF so bringing back dead characters without reason will just muddy the stakes of the series. It would be nice if developers were allowed to actually stick to their decisions instead of begging them to be retconned. I think it works in KOF because it was never supposed to be "the main canon" to begin with it was a spinoff with OCs who had their own stories
