Was just watching some gameplay videos of COTW, and I gotta say, some of the English Voice Acting is ASS. Terry and Rock(Rock JP is way better though) are alright. Tolerable. Not bad by any means, but still amateur. Probably also helps that Terry speaking English will take some getting used to. But others like Mai are just not it. She sounds robotic, no real emotion in some lines. The attack-shouts get grating and the pronunciations are awkward. The English Voices are really 2000s anime-dub tier. Really hope there's a dub option in the beta and final game.

By SNK standards, this is a good dub. At least the characters sound roughly the same between languages (looking at you, El Fuerte). If you want some truly cringe dubbing, go play KOF:MI or KOFXII.

I actually like English Rock better. All the character from his old voice is missing, he just sounds like generic coolkid bishounen now. But I'm not very impressed with a lot of the English acting so far either. Vox Reaper is especially bad.

AAA means less games being released because they make more money. Pachinko is the reason KOFXIV looks like that. If they actually fucking made games instead of dicking around with gambling, they wouldn't have taken 10 years to make a game that looks slightly better than MVC3

COTW won't even have a "Konquest" mode to get more attention. Easy controls might help, but they won't work miracles. Ronaldo could make the game sell 1 million by himself IF he was playable. That's what I expected. Not because I like Ronaldo, but it would help the game a lot. but that teaser followed by months of radio silence makes me think that this collaboration, if it actually happens, will be a shot in the foot.

It has single player content just not a Yakuza-lite. We don't know much about Episodes of South Town since they only showed it off once and only really showed off NPC fights which is cool to have since it will add a lot more variety than just dicking around with the roster exclusively. That's part of the appeal people saw in World Tour alongside the 3D movement. As for Ronaldo, he obviously was not going to be playable and I don't know why anybody expected him to be. Whether he's heavily featured in the game via collectables, cosmetics or some NPC I dunno but people need to get the idea of "collaboration means playable" because most of the time you end up with Fifteen Dollar Turtle Costumes. Meanwhile getting Ken and Chunners for free is a boon, especially since they'll likely play better in Rev Drive than Ryu would have. I theorized maybe he'll voice Gato's dad but who knows if he'll even be playable at this rate. They need to reveal 7 more characters in 3 months

Really the main problem is SNK doesn't seem to have the budget for marketing. Waiting a month and sometimes more for news and it's just another character trailer doesn't really cut it unless the game is already out. I feel extreme pity for whoever was handling the KOF anniversary because that shit was a monumental disaster. Hosting a website only to reveal all the shit on Twitter, you might as well not even have had a "celebration"

I'm not really bothered by all the radio silence (especially since everyone should be used to it by now) but I know it's not a good look for big corpo to not be shoving shit in your face every waking minute. That's part of why KOFXV died even after they "fixed the online" because people just outright forgot it existed. No advertising for it or anything post-launch. Just more trailer reveals

I see amateur advertisers have arrived. They don't need to start running ads till March.

What's most important to get people to play and watch is having huge prize pool and tournaments series.

And you don't need to be quotation marks around "fixed the online" they legitimately fixed the matchmaking. And KOFXV was never going to be a big game (PLAYED BY THE TOP PLAYERS IN FIGHTING GAMES, NOT JUST 5HE USUAL KOF PLAYERS) without a huge prize pool.

Quality as a fighting game doesn't matter.

Dude I've been worrying about Hero teams soaking up all the fucking roster slots since Season 1. Unless they start cutting characters like K' and Ash so they don't have to be forced to write characters who have no real place in modern KOF, which they won't because people will cry their main is missing, KOF needs to stop having OC Heroes and focus on what it already has because it's going to get really bloated really fast and that'll either mean more cut content or KOF games taking 10 years to cook instead of 5

Right now the essentials are Kyo Team, K' Team, Ash Team, Shun Team, Terry Team, Ryo Team, Ikari Team, Athena Team and a Rival or two for them. That's 8 Teams with Kyo, Benimaru, Iori, K', Kula, Ash, Shun'ei, Geitenkun, Isla, Terry, Ryo, Ralf, Clark, Leona, Athena, Mai, Yuri, King and whoever else is "necessary" to bring back. Some of these characters have been cut before but they definitely won't be going forward after the disaster of KOFXII. This is already 18 "mandatory" characters which is the same amount that SF6 even debuted with

Funny thing is they're doing a great job fleshing out Shermles in a way that she can actually drop Yashiro and Chris any time she wants. You can have say, an SNK Heroines Team with the likes of her, Luong, Nakoruru, Mui Mui to bring her back or Sylvie and Mian to reflect Orochi/NESTS/Ash in a thematic way. I wouldn't worry about her being cut, but it does mean she's not going to be important going forward like Mai

Rock will probably team up with Terry I doubt they'll do Team Fatal Fury again. Especially now that Andy/Hokutomaru/Mai are likely going to be in the same game for the first time so Team Shiranui can be a thing. Team Joe too. But that's 3 Teams rather than 1 Team so it doesn't solve anything

Otherwise my thoughts exactly with your list. If they want to get creative like with XI again they have tons of potential but if they want to stick to the tried and true Teams like Fatal Fury, AOF, Ikari, etc. then there's going to be less reason to really pick up brand new KOFs going forward outside of possible shitty gameplay gimmicks

It's really forced because they sort of forced Shun to be their protagonist when they had zero plans for him. His story parallels Team Japan's in 94 where even though Kyo had a significant tie with the final boss of the game, he was really sharing the spotlight with the other 7 (really 6) Teams. But the difference is they tied Shun'ei to a Fatal Fury character specifically, so he's not really built on his own accord and more so being shaped by characters around him like Terry, Kyo and Tung

Shun's a character I've grown to like but he's just not a good MC. He feels like a side character in the grand scheme of things

There's nothing really wrong with this, per se. Plenty of characters and new gen MC's succeed even when their identity is built on those around them like Nero from DMC and Rock. Shun'ei's problem is the lack of focus and SNK just not seeming to really know what to do with him despite him having some pretty good building blocks to work with which is less on him and more on SNK themselves. The manga handles him pretty damn well even if he does kind of take a backseat there but you can see the spark there. KOFXV takes that spark and fucking BURIES it. Which is a shame because Shun'ei does come off a bit better than he did in XIV but he's barely involved in his own plot which is all sort of retardation. The fact that Dolores would pull in someone as stubborn as Isla and tell her what's going on but not Shun'ei or at least have a talk with him about the Otoma Raga shit is so unbelievably retarded I can't believe someone allowed it. Shun'ei has questions, Dolores has answers she's willing to give btw but she never pulls aside the OTHER amp specter because reasons?? It's just so fucking stupid. They don't give him any confrontation with Otoma despite her being the source of his misery and fear all his life either. She's just another monster to him like anyone else would be when this really should not have been the fucking case. There's also a potential side conflict with the Ikari's who were surveilling Shun'ei even in the games and could have wanted to prevent him from getting involved instead of just letting shit play out. Even his big hero moment of saving Isla is shitty because he doesn't even save her of his own accord, his powers just kind of do it for him instead of him actively using his powers to save someone of his own volition. Shit's so infuriating.

It's a coin toss, honestly. You could argue Shun's relative unpopularity would prevent him but it's never stopped them before. Kaede was the 6th most popular character on a poll at a time and usually stayed in top ten same with Akari who usually placed even higher than him but they picked Hibiki to rep LB in CVS2 despite her highest being like 32 or 50-something. It really depends on the whims of the devs.

nobody plays kof in NA because what you get most of the time is mexicans on pizza box routers spamming flowchart in ping that deviates from 60 to 100+ ms. this wouldn't be that big of a deal if the netcode wasn't ass but nobody wants to talk about that, they want to act like crossplay was all the game needed, and not address the fact that anything below 4 bars is unplayable and even then will still give you connections like I described above. if you're somewhere that doesn't have good density of players to have a decent likelihood of finding someone close then the game may as well be dead.

SNK might consider Andy and Joe's comeback in Fatal Fury to be a big deal to have waited this long to reveal them. Nightmare Geese doesn't even need to be justified as a dream, you can just say he's the collective nightmare ghost of South Town. People in this thread have brought up how Kazumi was a ghost the entirety of T7's lifespan so reviving Heihachi was just completely unnecessary when you can state the character is dead in canon but still playable on the roster. I don't know what it is with every dev thinking people want these characters brought back to life just to be playable it's a waste of everyone's time. T7 and SFV are completely pointless because they banked their entire existence on "the main villain FINALLY dies" only to just undo that shit immediately in the next game

Besides, KOF already did this and straight up made it a plot point how every character was revived by Verse's defeat so doing it in FF is extra unnecessary

If they actually put Bison in a female body and actually made him not just suddenly be 'Bison' again by cutsceen-no-jutsuing Psycho Power and played up the destroyed angle more, it would've been fine. Same with a Heihachi who has become good and wanting to redeem himself from the evil he caused, like ffs he overcomes his evil and then he just... Is evil again because status quo. Think about Reina being all over Heihachi and realizing he's not the same person. Heihachi could've worked as you said yeah I think the Tekken team were just lazy and wanted their super hype badguy back. Even then they could've just brought back ghost young Heihachi and have him haunt his son since it doesn't really seem like Kazuya's dead or Jun's alive I don't know dumb ass game nails the Jin ending ignoring T6 but it also just feels like they're ignoring details so they don't have to commit to anything

If CotW really wanted to be stupid it could've just been KOFXV lite with characters like Andy, Joe, Blue Mary and Yamazaki headlining the game and maybe we got a conclusion of Gato's story but it actually gives a shit about its new generation and brought back more or less the entire MotW cast so unless Geese has a really good damn reason to "come back to life" they're not going to contradict a story told over 2 decades ago. He's going to be in somehow, we know since Richard Epcar/Kong Kuwata was the announcer for the earlier trailers, but his death will have to be acknowledged. Especially with Obari animating the Real Bout showdown with Terry

It's an interesting time since Kazuya and Jin no longer have the Devil Gene, Reina's devil'd and Jun *is* alive, just been fucking doing nothing since Ogre I guess, some sort of magic coma. The only uninteresting thing is Heihachi being alive AND evil so there was no consequence with him almost dying, at least Bison visibly looks like shit.
And I do like that the entire Garou cast seems to be in base (Plus free Season 1, which I still think is weird since why not delay the game, but I guess it's a good look or something), which probably means all the old FF cast will be DLC later (I wonder what'll happen to Raiden, since he's already on Tizoc's stage). I really don't think SNK are going to bring Geese back since Geese isn't the type to wait 10-20 years to come back, dude would've come back to South Town as soon as he could. He should stay dead and use Nightmare Geese, RB2 did, even Maximum Impact did. No reason to change now because Geese's dickhead ghost is still going to draw attention, no matter how canon it is. It's mother fucking Geese Howard.

I get that GD3/FF3 was not an ideal game to explore story (you have to be REALLY good to reach and/or defeat Chonrei) but if it means making players avod the need to touch GD3/FF3, COTW will need something like "Recap Mode" for lack of a better term to help players go over the stories of earlier GD/FF games without actually playing them (since we're not getting an official translation of Memories of Stray Wolves any time soon).

It was a mistake that was being course-corrected mid development because they were planning more radical changes to the roster like KOFXI (let alone the sprites) and they didn't have the time to finish the game they were actually working on. It's a crossover at its core and SNK didn't want to continue the stories of the FF or AOF cast in this game since they wanted their original series alive again to do that with, that's why we got so many OCs. I would buy XV for Xanadu and Gang Il but as it stands now the game has the roster more bland and vanilla I've seen in a KOF and thus I have zero interest in getting it.

Kind of impressive how badly they botched the return of CYS, Goenitz, and Rugal and the addition of Haohmaru.

I don't even know what's so botched about everything you're saying most of these characters are already playable in prior Dream Matches and Haohmaru being added just goes to show SamSho doesn't really fit KOF's gameplay at the end of the day so he wouldn't have ever worked even if he was added back in 95. Nothing about KOFXV is really fresh or new it's just fanservice. It's fun fanservice, but it's a game the team were obligated to make because suits wanted them to. KOF has been stale for a long, long time and there's no way to refresh it because they've already tried everything they could do. You think good graphics, massive roster of new characters and old fan favorites is going to interest people? It's an SNK crossover and SNK hasn't done new games outside of SamSho in the last decade. You're not going to sell people on KOF because KOF is supposed to be selling SNK

SNK needs to be more than KOF if KOF is going to ever sell. Unless you fundamentally change what KOF is which is what they did for Maximum Impact and why that's the only "KOF" game to be successful. SNK hasn't been open about KOF's sales in ages despite apparently being their "money maker" which leads me to believe even they realize this franchise isn't worth shit anymore

Their return felt deflated because they did fuck all in the nothing burger story and we already saw them in dream match re-releases and Shemie being in SNK Heroines was basically a calling card for them returning.

SNK has stayed they regret killing off CYS (and Kriz iirc too), but let's be honest if they had survived even back in the late 90s they would have been glorified gag villains too.

They're a bit unhinged and bizarre. They shift between being playful and genuinely psychotic if you understand what they're saying in battle and what supplementary info says about them. Bloody is a pretty good theme that shows that sense of instability.

The real lackluster aspect of XV is the lack of NESTS shit it's like they brought back K9999 for the sake of saying "surprise!" and dropped all their NESTS plot threads because they never gave a shit in the first place, which I don't blame them it's why I've been saying NESTS and K' should be a spinoff this whole thread. It just doesn't fit in KOF unless you focus on the crossover angle

People cared about the personality of CYS because they were sold on how goofy and charismatic they were. Their awakened forms were a good surprise but then it immediately tanks when Orochi is the easiest boss of his own series. But they weren't going to be genuine threats in XV because the "story" wasn't even supposed to be about Orochi so they were always going to be doomed to be side gags unless they animated a fuckton of cutscenes for every important KOF OC Team to be the true "climax" for all these characters

It's not really the gameplay, story or even writing that's at fault it's the presentation for not evolving beyond arcades. You want your climaxes and showcases you'd have to sacrifice half the roster just so we got visuals instead

Like things are set up in XIV that are dropped quickly, even Hien's story is shoehorned onto Luong's, while Nelson's arm being a NESTS thing and the organisation are just not a thing. SF6 Team has "plans" for Lilly but they aren't ever going to actually own up to those plans because nobody fucking likes her either. Chang and Choi are more likely to show up in Fatal Fury now than KOF because KOF has too many OCs to make room for roster filler, as shown by XV

Is he? I don't know about Strive since I dislike almost every aspect of that game, but he's barely been relevant to the main plot in every other game (his voice actor even commented in one of the Xrd interviews that he didn't get to do much in the story). Faust's plot is mostly self-contained pre-Xrd and then all about Zato in Xrd. Prior to Xrd, all he did was try to find patients to heal and then, very rarely, find a hint as to who killed his patient and turned him insane.

Most of Guilty Gear's characters are irrelevant to the main plot and have self-contained stories (especially Bridget). Faust is a mainstay because he's unique gameplay-wise and personality-wise, being the obvious comedic relief in every game except for when he's Baldhead and Strive.

Guilty Gear rarely dropped characters until Xrd (due to the shift of moving to 3D) because they were able to reuse sprites for so long: Justice and Kliff were canonically dead and so didn't make it into GGX until GGX+ where the devs literally just resized the older sprites. They didn't make it to GGXX until Justice had half of her sprites redrawn and Kliff had 100% of them redrawn. The other dropped GG characters are bosses with barely any frames of animations (Leopaldon, Judgment, Gig), a palette swap (Robo-Ky II), literal NPCs made playable (Zako-A, B and C) or one character who was on a Wonderswan game with tiny sprites (Fanny).

96 would probably be worth a damn if 98UM didn't exist since OG 98 didn't bring back Team Boss, but honestly I feel like 95 has more of a reason for me to go back to than 96 because 96 just feels like the blueprint for the rest of the Orochi Saga. 96 being new assets is sort of a misnomer. The key frames were redrawn but the inbetween ones were the exact same as 95. 98 actually quietly redid the inbetween frames but some characters like Iori were still using sprites from 1995 until XI.

One way to look at it is that Kensou is madly in love with Athena, but Athena is scared of letting the relationship progress to that step. She doesn't want to change what she has with Kensou, at least outwardly, but the guy is relentless.

Kind of but I still can't see it. Whip for me was always the odd fighter out and while I've never played the full Ikari Warriors team, they were like this for a good full amount of KoF. Always happy to see Leona, Ralf and Clark back at it together. Heidern and Adelheid teaming up makes sense in the context of of their relationship to Rugal, but I'd rather see Whip in the all girls team again with Yuri and King. Though Leona, Heidern, and Adelheid is an interesting combination to say the least.

I found a way to generate 3D NPR anime animations from scratch in 6 hours and a extra process to polish all the frames in 1 hour.

Meanwhile SNK spent 18 months per character, my workflow only needs 2 days.

1. It's Mai Shiranui. She has been THE sexualized fanservice character for decades. Not only that, but she has done so very consistently with little backing down. I think this plays a big part, because sexualization is a big part of Mai's appeal, everyone knows it and SNK themselves have almost never wavered or been shy about it. Had SNK decades before tried to """fix""" Mai and tone down her sex appeal, things would be very different in how she's portrayed in Street Fighter 6, but simply put SNK has never really backed down on who Mai is so the general audience have gotten used to it and even expect it.

2. It's Street Fighter 6, the most popular fighting game. When you're top dog you can get away with a little things and even be hypocritical. We don't know. He went with Kain for the couple years between MotW and CotW but we don't know what his morals are now and how he's changed since the last game. But I figure since SNK isn't really going to try to rock the boat too much he's still going to be the new age Hero of South Town using Kain's assistance against him

As for Billy, we know less about how he factors into things. Earlier on I was theorizing Billy would be helping Rock and Kain due to being the son of Geese, but given Billy is CEO of Howard Connection and his radical redesign makes me think he doesn't really have much interest in Rock in the long run. It's kind of wild that we know the MotW roster is all back but it's a genuine mystery what they'll all be up to and the fact nothing about the story has been leaked yet

Even if Rock kills Terry or some bullshit that's still not going to be as bad as T6. That game fundamentally ruined Jin it's a shame. T8 Jin would've been an amazing book ends with T3+4 but T6 really just kinda sticks out like a really fucking ugly thorn because they just went WAY too far. It's hard to imagine what CotW could to to monumentally fuck up the lore without just going "Somehow Geese returned" because any significant swing would genuinely be impressive given this shit ass genre and where it's at with its stories. Amazing how the coffee shop AU argument about KOFXV has fallen apart when SF6 was a massive gigadick success with even more coffee shop AU writing with its characters who don't do anything anymore

Not that Fatal Fury has ever had that large of a roster, CotW+S1 more or less ties with RB2's 23 characters and includes a minimum of ~13 characters from MotW when Capcom couldn't even include a single SFIII character until year 3 of SF6. I think the game alleviates all of the surface level issues KOFXV had in this general. Fundamentally the game has proven itself to be the exact opposite of an asset flip or cash grab, so there's little reason to be pessimistic about how it looks or what the future holds when the game has already been planned to have 3 years worth of content. Even if the game flops and sells low, it set out to do exactly what it wanted to do: Continue Fatal Fury

The entire hook of Tekken 7 was "Kazuya vs. Heihachi, someone is going to fucking DIE." The big narrative hook of Street Fighter 5 was "Dictator dies for real this time." At least SF6 gave Dictator the excuse of "new body + amnesia," but how Tekken 8's Heihachi not only survived but also augmented his movelist - especially in the face of T8's big hook being "Jin vs. Kazuya, for real this time" - left a sour taste in the mouth.

By all accounts, SNK appears to be sticking to its guns and saying that Geese is staying dead. It's been twelve years since his final fight with Terry, and the whole point of the story is about life in South Town after Geese. Hell, SNK commissioned Masami Obari again for a new animated short, and this time, it will be a retelling of Terry vs. Geese at the end of Real Bout 1. If that doesn't hammer home that Geese Howard is dead and staying dead, its hard to tell what will.

You don't know how businesses work. These games are live service fighting games. Their main source of operating revenue is from the subscriptions and active userbase. The big problem is that making a game all about "These characters will DIE" and not committing looks stupid and that you can't commit. It's not like dead characters have been playable as non canon ghosts or w/e (And Bison literally *can* be an asshole ghost).
Even if they were to be alive, you actually need to show consequence. Bison *kinda* has it but not really, and Heihachi had something and then it gets completely bullshitted away because muh status quo.

No he wasn't. Bamco changed their mind because money. Heihachi's soul was punched out of his body and you heard a heartbeat slowed until it stopped.

No one has a problem with Heihachi being playable in Tekken 8. What people have a problem with is that he's canonically alive. Dead characters can still be guest characters in their own game. Heihachi being alive means we are denied a timeline where we see the effect of the power vacuum he left behind on all the main characters. Tekken 8's retail story gave us a taste of that with Reina, but now she's a character who's arc has now been ruined due to pappa being alive. Also, this means Tekken's story is stagnant, so why even care about it anymore.

God I hope Geese is not back from the dead canonically.

I think Tekken's is the least embarrassing out of the bunch besides Fatal Fury, but Fatal Fury hasn't had the opportunity to be ruined yet. It does sort of rely on whether or not you genuinely care about the Mishimas or not, but T8 is like the fourth time they backtracked on any of the Mishimas outright dying so that's kind of why people are sick of it. Outright saying the previous game doesn't matter ruins the illusion of giving a shit and makes people question "why give a shit?"

Gameplay can only carry so much for your game as shown by SNK games never performing well according to this general. So if the gameplay is shit and the story is shit, there's not much of a reason to check into the next installment if it's always going to be the same thing every time. I think people were more okay with Bison coming back than Heihachi because "retconning SFV isn't a big deal" but when you retcon the game that saved Tekken, I think people are going to be a little more pissed

But I'd just like for these devs to have standards. Maybe it's impossible because of DLC and Esports dictating how things should play instead of actual creative ideas or decisions. Every game will just be a fraction of the previous game's roster, a couple shitty new faces and then 4 characters I can already play in older games repackaged and sold back with maybe a new haircut to indicate "they've changed!". That shit sounds bleak and uninteresting

Bison was dead it's called SFIII. That's the reason IV+V take place before III, because Bison was fucking dead. SF6 fundamentally changed the franchise by stating "there's no such thing as a post-Bison world" which practically insults SFIII's entire legacy even more so than the fact we had to wait 3 years for a single III rep to even be playable. Bison being brought back has foundation in the lore and SFV is kusoge so retconning it isn't really the issue more so that Bison being brought back is just a metaphorical statement that SF is now permanently stagnant

Heihachi's issue is more literal. Tekken's killed him off 3 times already. Maybe only once if you really don't consider his deaths in 1 or 5 to really feel "final" in any way. But Tekken 7 is about making his heart genuinely fucking stop beating and dropping his ass into lava. Saying "that never happened" completely eliminates stakes, just as pretending Jin starting WWIII didn't happen makes T8's ending feel tonally awkward

Geese is still in KOF so they have no motivation to bring him back. And if they did, they have a free out thanks to Nightmare Geese. Especially since the game you buy is called the "Special Edition" which might even suggest the DLC roster are Dream Match fodder

kofxv failed not because it was asset reuse but because as a package it failed to deliver, and in presentation it failed, so it failed two primary checkmarks
you can asset reuse in the face of complaining internet nerds, but you need to GO SOMEWHERE with it
snk heavily reused assets for kofxv regardless of whatever anyone wants to tell you in the contrary direction, but it wasn't a short cycle on the surface anyway, unless you want to admit that they were sleeping for one year, because that's what *i* inferred

if you don't want them to have a CaC, fine, but there has to be *something*
it's like a canvas painting with a lot of negative space, if you don't want to fill that space with ONE thing, sure, but at least put something else there or you're just wasting canvas space and you could have done better with a smaller canvas that's cheaper, and believe me, i know how expensive large canvases are

They're not. They're only calling it the Special Edition because they can't think of any other way to explain that the only possible option for buying FF:CotW is the game plus season 1 as a single package. There is literally no other option for buying the game. They've said repeatedly that the "base game" will have 22 characters - 17 on day one, 5 as part of season 1.

Evil Ryu came back as "Kage" in SFV as a weird Satsui no Hadou shadow of Ryu separate from the man himself. The funny part is that in his story mode, literally everyone he meets (Sagat, Akuma, Ryu) calls him a shitter, and he just fades away.

Oh fuck off with that bullshit. Story is important to fighting game because it sets up character motivations. Stories must move forward, arcs have to end, characters have to retire for the new generation otherwise it all becomes stagnant and boring.

This wouldn't be an issue if the function argument could actually apply to actually good characters. Nobody really complained when a good chunk of the Tekken 3 cast replaced the Tekken 1+2 cast. I don't think people really are complaining about Grant not coming back since it's fundamentally not really a cut. When you get a bad function replacement like Kage for Evil Ryu, the reason is usually because the devs just fucked up and didn't really have confidence in what they made. I'm sure with the right tweaks people would like Kage, but it would require actual effort to sell him as opposed to just immediately crying and going

Again, the central hook of Tekken 7, more than anything else, was "Kazuya vs. Heihachi finally comes to a head, and only one of them will walk away." It was in all the marketing, all the presentations. Even when referenced in future entries or as part of any form of retrospective of the franchise, Tekken 7 is forever characterized as "the Kazuya vs. Heihachi one". You geninuely can't fault people for thinking Heihachi's death was actually going to stick that time.
