I added changing scenes via match statement and with a level endscreen instead of sleeping lol

I think it's important to do at least a little every day because it adds up over time.
It's also important to not fall for the sunk cost fallacy and know when to cut your losses. If you didn't progress yesterday it doesn't matter, you can always do it today. What matters is that it gets done.

False. Success comes to copycats and following an establisbed formula. Innovation is risky. Algorithms don't recommend unique new types of games, they recommend games similar to the ones you've played before, and players seek out games similar to the ones they like. This is why genres exist.

Once again thank you for your advice, it turned out to be really helpful. I watched some youtube tutorials for how to make a character controller in GameMaker and after a couple house of slamming my head against a wall I finally made a square move around on the screen without just copying exactly what the tutorial said. I'm really doing it!
Now to figure out importing sprites and getting animations to play.

I enjoy working on UI. I think it comes down to having the right tools for the job. For example, most of my UI is simple base prefabs and I generate widgets/windows at the start of the game. Each UI element has a component that provides generation and identification info.

I showed off a change log window I made in another thread and that window took me minutes to make.

what do people like in a devlog video? personally i hate fast editing for laughs and uncharismatic devs trying to make jokes that just make me cringe. but I also don't like long, drawn-out technical videos about some guys 2D game engine they built over 4 years in C (they made pacman using it) or the 827th minecraft clone (but its voxels bro!!!!). seeing satisfying visual progress seems to be good, and the dev walking the audience through the trial and error of implementing different gameplay systems.

I can only speak from my experience.
AI has helped me tremendously in getting myself self educated. It guided me to resources that I never would have found on my own (or this general). It's not perfect by any means, but it does help the user like an assistant. I think its a unique product.

That's the thing, we already have a solution to that. It's called using a library, or copypasting from stackoverflow.com.

I genuinely haven't seen a single application for AI in gamedev that isn't already solved by asset stores or github. Maybe AI voice acting but that just a slight improvement on already existing text to speech

I'm making a model studio simulator trainer game powered by AI with the idea that you groom/lewd your models over time, with the encounters generated by AI and the images/videos you take generated locally

it'll be an actual game too with a campaign, you can level up your studio and you have to hit certain requirements, fufill contracts for companies that require certain body types/hair types of models, hire new girls, new locations unlock idk the sky is the limit

I am using .json to save my game state now.
I save all gameEntities and components data to a single file, even if the gameEntities and components aren't being used which means all .map files are the same size of 2.4mb.
I could add more boilerplate to the code so that it only saves the entities that exist to reduce filesize, but I can't be fuuucked.

So what's the best for coding questions between deepseek, gpt, and bard? I don't even know where to start. ChatGPT is the single most useful computer tool I've ever had access to. It's made life so much easier it's hard to even put it into words. Kind of reminds me of the early search engine days. I know most of you weren't around yet, but search engines really didn't exist at first. You had to go to somebody's personal website with a dozen to a hundred links on it and click on those. ChatGPT can give me instant "good enough" answers to pretty much ever problem I have. I can also spot coding errors that I miss. Only danger is trusting anything it says. It can always be wrong.

I think o1 is slightly better for my use cases. Follow the leaderboard at https://lmarena.ai/ and choose the category relevant to what you're doing, there are more benchmarks around you should look at but generally deepseek is really close to tied for 1st. I think claude still wins in web development too, check the webdev arena tab if you're interested in that. Also labs are sitting on better models just not releasing them. Everyone suspects anthropic to have something, but they don't have the compute to serve them - they keep running out just serving claude. Openai have o3 but are still doing safety testing, and they are currently training o4. I'm not sure how o3-mini is going to match up exactly but that should be out very soon.

The selling points are the lower cost in terms of computing power and electricity, and that it's not from Silicon Valley.

Probably Unity if you are okay with waiting half an hour or whatever to download it. Godot is easy to pick up and drop because it takes like a few seconds to download. Unity tutorials are more complete in terms of series and specifics like shaders.

Have you guys heard of Hunyuan 3d? bit of a vague question. If you've never done something like a skill system before I'd advise looking at other people's code/ tutorials. At the most basic you can do pretty much anything you want with an oracle that manages which skills are unlocked, and whenever something happens that could be affected by a skill look there to see what code has to be ran.

Yeah, AI is not good for generating logic of any kind. It can do boilerplate really well though, it's more comfortable than typing it out. Any code that needs any sort of thought though is not going to be usable.

I already have a house and 10 years worth of living is $720k at my current salary which is enough to pay it off and have $615k leftover. I really don't want to use Godot, but it's the best alternative for me between GMS, Unreal and Unity.

I feel the best option would be to use framworks/libraries instead of an engine, but I am really tired of writing C code with Raylib, and I really don't want to go down the Vulkan C++ rabbithole and become an eternal enginedev. Are there no reasonable options?

You don't need to be a citizen to work in japan. You can live full time with a 30k investment, office space, and hire a full time employee. To be a citizen you must renounce other citizenship. But you can live long term without doing that. That's just one visa, there might be other ways. Might involve border runs though.

I dislike Juan and the community on a personal level, and I met plenty of issues with the engine that required me to do various workarounds, but overall I am still developing my game 2000% faster than I did with SFML and C++ (god if I have to implement a bbcode text renderer one more time...) and it's a dozen times more lightweight than UE4 (the previous engine I used). It works perfectly fine for my needs (small 2D game) and best of all I don't have to worry about any license fuckery or revenue payment whatsoever, forever and ever.

I use godot and I agree 100% with everything you said except the amount of time I've spent looking for workarounds because of things that should already be baseline is around 30% of my dev time which offsets whatever speed I was gaining from using it in the first place. After the unity fiasco a lot of people jumped into the bandwagon and so did tutorialfags which inflated the apparent usefulness of the engine. Its still very unpolished and it will remain for a long time. So I guess my 2c for anyone listening is use it at your own discression.

Did you fall for the "make a steam page as fast as possible to get wishlists" meme and didn't actually make an appealing trailer/screenshots yet because you thought you'd add them later?
Your game page going "live" for the first time is the second biggest exposure you'll get to people without any marketing on your side (first one being actually releasing the game). If you're not going to market the game you should at least take the time to make the page as pretty as possible before putting it up, in my opinion. Even if you add cool screenshots later, the people who skimmed over your game before won't come back to see them if you're not actively marketing.

It's good but I feel like it misses a few things here and there.

However it would take days to code what ai can make in a few seconds and gives great starting points even if it's not perfect.

i think they're good, they give you ideas of progress to think about
instead of just completing the level, you now motivate the player to get a high score at the end of the level
it adds replay value to the game and makes the game generally feel like more effort was put into it, which is always a good thing

Modern AI seems to have a problem with lisp (well when you pick certain dialects). Ironic considering lisp was invented to be an AI language. In this case it was able to find some Guile specific functions but it didn't understand the context.

If you asked the same question for a BASH script it probably would have got it right and used environment variables. Then if you asked about the script it may have answered correctly and used Guile's 'getenv' procedure.

Yeah I bought it used it twice and never opened it again, it's too convoluted for what it does (essentially just effects/fx) and the dev keeps adding features that exist in other software like making tilemaps with no export support just deal with the json yourself(??) instead of focusing on streamlining the experience, same issue as crocotile I just went back to blender with addons for pixel art.
