With quick tinkering you can set up landmines in the middle of a gunfight, or throw poisoned caltrops everywhere, assuming you don't go for chem mines or straight up beartraps

Not really. Traps are mostly just dice rolls.
The way to make traps interesting is telegraphing them to the players but making the puzzle how to actually deal with/bypass them.
Too complicated for vidya.

traps and locked chests/doors exist only because sleight of hand/trickery/lockpicking does. they never pose a real threat or obstacle and only serve to waste time. they're like a fantasy trope that won't go away and since equipment is behind traps, doors, and chests, lockpicking becomes a universally must have skill.

Kotor was funny tho, being able to collect mines and then actually use them against enemies. I struggled to kill Kreia once, many moons ago, and instead placed like 50 traps on top of each other and baited her over them.

KotoR had the correct approach to boxes. I hate games that REQUIRE you to lockpick or otherwise TEEHEE no loot for you.

the best approach is to stop littering world spaces with nonsensical skill checks, sleight of hand primarily. skill checks should be moments of expertise, not mundanity. but at least kotor didn't cuck you for applying a lightsaber as a lockpick.

that being said, any game that obliterates the magical contents of a chest because the lock was targeted deserves death by obscurity.

It's the same plot, but instead of Yrliet performing a key plot device, it's someone else.
It actually makes more sense with the backup person, mostly because idiot playtesters hated the original yrliet version and flung handfuls of their own shit at the owlkek staff until it was hastily rewritten.

In my run Owlcat's bugged coding turned her into a schizo.
She helped me kill the Farseer and the rest of her buddies only to spend the rest of the game talking as though we left them to live happily ever after on Janus. Also activated her side quest without any conversation.
Her delusions continued upon our return from Cormorragh. Within 30 seconds of setting foot back on Janus I had the new farseer executed in front of her but when we got back to the ship she spouted some dialogue about how he was resting elsewhere on the ship before he was ready to depart again.

I had Abelard as Vanguard because it felt appropriate but he all the best things he did weren't Vanguard related at all

They all have rooms, but they mostly come up in dialogue and random warp encounters (ie when you find Argenta crying in her room)
Cassia has her little library and Ulfar has a pretty sweet maintenance deck all to himself
What I find weird is that despite the palace on Dargonus being a palace the Rogue Trader AND his secret room are just off the entrance hall
Though I guess he has many rooms and probably many secret rooms, so maybe that's just a room for short stays or something

Clearly killing the Immaculates isn't a real option you're supposed to cooperate or infiltrate or some shit because I'm just killing an entire town of named NPCs.
I also think the frost area was supposed to be earlier than the Silverglen area based on gear but I don't know since I did it after.
The story also is clearly out of order and I'm piecing together after the fact.

There's also loremaster for identifying things (although you can pay and money is basically infinite), charisma (does the stupid rock paper scissors minigame), batering (redundant because of the useless economy), lucky charm (RNG loot, which is terrible as a whole), level restrictions on gear, and many more.

Anon, at the point you recruit him, you're actually at the powerlevel one would expect of a Rogue Trader, ie someone who can afford all the best cybernetics, gene mods, and equipment. Just because the game has you digging archeotech out of random trashcans to use lategame doesn't mean that you shouldn't be able to snap your fingers and have people deliver the best of the best of whatever you want. Muhreens have a considerably higher power level then your average human, but if you're willing to spend enough money, you can get most of the way there except for some of the weirder geneseed perks, same way that Imperial Assassins outclass Marines.

Is vanguard just kinda shit?
I'll admit I only skimmed the class but I didn't see anything all that much better defensively than an AM with cautious approach, dependable and maybe survivor. +5 dodge and parry per stack of versatility is a hefty defensive boost by the end of your first turn and an unassailable one once you get Daring Breach or Finest Hour off. Get whatever temp up you need with Malpian Shroud and one of the counter-attack on parry items.

It has a better taunt IIRC, but Rogue Trader's combat is just way too lethal to try and have one of your guys soak damage instead of killing the other guys unless you're playing on a difficulty where you can faceroll the keyboard and still win.

theres a mod for automating prebuffing if you want that, theres a mod that makes the longsword that levels up throughout the acts able to be different weapons but it doesn't really matter since you get a talking weapon that shifts for you anyways. Bloodrager is good, one of its subclasses lets you decide between taking bloodrager or barbarian abilities when you level up and its basically just better barbarian. its not the most skilled of classes but if you want to be passing skill checks you should be making a character/class that uses int or proficient in a lot of shit like rogue. personally I found it easy to have 20 dex and 14 int on my rogue and fill out most of the skills, but I'd say only worry about that if your planning to skill monkey, you don't have to do that to succeed. (you just have to deal with taking certain companions for their skills)

Any class is viable on Normal which is what you should play on as a new player. You can adjust difficulty on the fly, so even do a Custom thing if you want.
No mods are necessary. You shouldn't need to prebuff on Normal with not-completely-stupid build/equipment choices on your party. I think it's mostly autists who do this, the kind who get a little ability damage and reload or something.

The Sarkoris one is good and gets a pretty interesting companion.
Through the Ashes/Lord of Nothing takes place parallel to the main story. I liked Through the Ashes quite a lot, and didn't care for LoN except in continuing the story of TtA.
Some people don't like it because it's kind of a bit survival-y, and very low level adventure, and unrelated to the main quest (I don't understand this complaint but I've seen it).
I thought Midnight Isles and Inevitable Excess were bad and didn't enjoy them at all. Others will have other opinions.

Yes play on normal.
Core is not recommended AT ALL for your first playthrough. Even if you think you know pathfinder as a tabletop system you have to understand that this game cheats.

Normal pathfinder you might find enemies with 20~30 AC. Here you will commonly find enemies with 40+ AC cause fuck you and fuck owlkek for not understanding balance or fun.

Correct. You can adjust whenever if it's feeling too easy, but the PF games have a steeper slope to Difficulty, giving a much higher ceiling for those who are interested in it.
Most new players will still mostly feel challenged by Normal, I think, especially while becoming familiar with the game and if they're new to PF. Even knowing PF well, this is a certain kind of interpretation of PF, so it can still take time to adjust.

Not making excuses for Owlcat, I think they made a lot of bad design choices, but balance is tricky. I think Core is actually pretty well balanced for a player who understands the game mechanics but also isn't into cheesing too much.

one suggestion for building a character, the more you invest in a stat the more it "costs", and imo unless you have a really good reason for it, I would say to not push past 19, the cost is not worth it at that point. Others may disagree, but that's my advice. You also get the opportunity to invest a point every few levels.

What this anon said. Alignment systems make 0 sense and basically just shoe horn you into playing one particular way. They more often than not remove any sense of free will and role play.

The best way to approach these systems is a reputation system for factions, each pulling and tugging at each other as you help them in various ways.

Greedfall while not really a CRPG had one of my favorite versions of this system

Yeah, they're OK, Primalist gets to pick either bloodline powers or barbarian rage abilities, so you're basically a barbarian who can also cast a few spells.

The Last Sarkorians and Dance of Masks are both well integrated in the campaign, the former adds a new companion and the Shifter class and the latter is a very late game party with all your companions.

Through the Ashes and Lord of Nothing are separate campaigns, they're ok on their own and they have some very minor integration into the main campaign.

Inevitable Excess and Treasure of the Midnight Isles are outright bad, IE is a separate campaign after you finish the game where you import your level 20 Mythic 10 character and fight a bunch of overpowered enemies, the story is pretty retarded. Treasure of the Midnight Isles adds a separate roguelike mode which is fun if you just want to quickly play a certain character in just 10 hours instead of the 100 hours the campaign takes, this DLC also adds a mega dungeon for the main campaign, but it's extremely tedious and throws the leveling balance out the window.

All these DLCs add some very overpowered items, especially the Treasure of the Midnight Isles, so they're nice if you're minmaxing, which I wouldn't recommend on a first playthrough,

There is an autobuffer mod you can install later if you get tired of hearing Magritium Turinos 15 times before a fight. Toybox adds a bunch of cheats and lets you mess around with the game's parameters, it can be helpful if the game bugs out.

Just as another random bit of advice, a character you get early has hexes. Two good ones are Sleep and Evil Eye. Do whatever you'd like but especially in the early game where sometimes you're a stray crit away from dying, I think they're the most helpful, Evil Eye scales well through the whole game as well.

There's a button on the lower-left, Inspect [Y]. You should enable this. Hovering enemies will tell their stats, right click makes it stick on screen
The biggest things to keep in mind different from 5e is Flat-Footed AC and Touch AC, but that comes in time. But basically if you surprise attack someone or otherwise get them flat-footed, their AC will be lower, and also some hulking goliath in heavy armor might have high AC but low Touch AC meaning you could easier hit him with a shocking grasp or something.

Oh also casting or using ranged while next to an enemy equipped with melee will let them have an attack of opportunity on you. Same with standing up, which can really suck.
Anyone ranged is going to want Point-Blank Shot and then Precise Shot.

Uhhh what other random things. Something many players might not even know, you can feed potions to other characters. I haven't tried Cause Wounds potions on enemies (almost certainly not) or if pets are able to.

Plague of Abaddon is pretty cool, I always like abilities that grow with you as you progress, in ways that you get to choose. The first level I'm having hit Dex. I don't even remember where it's listed, but in the last fight, it was -4 dex first round, -2 second. Not bad for infinite use, level 2 ability. Of course it needs to land vs fortitude, and right now it's melee touch attack (I don't think giving AoO)
Probably will end up useless with every enemy immune to disease, I haven't played in a long time. Certainly against undead.

Why are owlcats cucking me and not including my 2nd favorite class of gunslinger? It's a base rulebook class even. Did owlcat just refuse to implement guns cause they were lazy? I mean most likely, but still it's dumb to have them spending all this development time on NONCORE classes and skipping a main class of the setting that helps differentiate it from DnD.

I've also played a heroes unlimited campaign that lasted around a year.

Well actually I think less and less people care about that. Larian was eager to jump ship, even Critical Roll has made their own system.
I don't think anyone is turning away from Solasta2 specifically because it doesn't have Official DnD Stamp of Approval, I think more a matter of budget and market reach that it won't hit bg3 levels

Last point I will say its up to preference sure, but also turn based games are better than your autobattle simulator.

It's one thing if it's just food or other small gold items, but random boxes in a warehouse will just have useful stuff like thieves tools and even better like invis potions in the early game.

They did give you nigh infinite buff duration as a mythic power, which clearly was a step in the right direction even if it wasn't full bubble buffs level of automation, and then RT got rid of out of combat buff stacking though it had it's own faults.

Buff bots aren't typically spending their spell slots on anything but, and so it's not a huge problem to give up on other mythics. As to the concept of pre-buffing, that's just how Pathfinder works. Complaining about it in a PF game is like picking up Call of Duty and then complaining about how shooting guns is lame.

Hexblade and SwordDancer look cool. Bladepact is a trash without 6 levels of OathBreaker so Warlock is kind of a saved now since he won't have to compete with Wizards and Sorcs for ranged damage.
Sword Dancer is also nice since in 5E Eldritch Knight is kill and this is your best option of replicating Kensai Mage from BG1/2

BG3 builds mean nothing because the combat is ridiculously easy because "everything must be viable", which is fine, but leads to well... everything being viable, do whatever and win
Act 1 is very good, and I'm full of complaints about even the things I love. I would say Act1 of BG3 is quite good. Act2 is shit, Act3 is a mess and I would say not even worth completing.

BG3 builds are also harmed by the laughable state of level progression choices. The feats are abysmal, I literally thought I was missing some tab or something. And they're all the same short list across every class, not to mention the levels where you just basically hit "OK thanks for the +4 HP".
More on Act2, it starts feeling unfinished but has some promise. The various solutions with the Inn, a bit of the lore of situations around, it's pretty alright. The Shar trial is vomit, the whole darkness shit is vomit, the unconnectedness of most things is vomit. I have no excitement about ever playing through Act2 again, but at least it has some potential.
Act3 is even worse in this regard. Less promise even, some few good ideas (newspaper cool-ish but should be a minor point among a lot of major points), timed underwater pretty alright for something you have to plan and consider sacrifice, ... Not a lot else strikes me as more than just filler and lazy and half-assed. Wouldn't be interested in replaying Act3 either.

lmao no. Anything is viable. I did the different-class-per-level achievement first time playing blind Tactician. (Don't talk about Honour mode, it's just Tactician with a dash of meta/autism, not more challenging.)

pure tank classes, in general, are pretty useless. there's too many high damage companions and enemies never live long enough to make vanguard, or counter attack warrior, viable.
the enemies that do survive are likely to roach around you, so you can't taunt all of them, and ignore your tank.
"tank" abelard is better as max THG, max STR arch militant, with confident approach

An I crazy, or is planning a character blind in Rogue Trader absurdly awkward? I get the impression the game is easy enough no matter what so far, but holy shit. The worst part of the 40k RPGs is that you have to go back and forth in the book a lot the first few times you play to get a feel for the countless talents with sometimes unintuitive names, but they made that a lot worse

It feels that way but it really isn't.
If a feat or talent looks stupid, it probably is.
However there are a lot of feats that interact in unexpected ways. You might find yourself getting an extra turn without quite knowing why, or doing compounding damage for no clear reason.
But there's always logic behind it.
Don't be afraid to just give it a try and see how it goes, checking the combat log on the right of the screen to see what's going on. If things don't seem to be working, talk to the guy on the bridge for "training" and respec everyone. Take your time over it.

it doesn help that it uses randomly generated equipment, so you can keep reloading saves until a chest or vendor has what you want

I see it all the time and don't understand it at all.
Even if you're too lazy to make proper loot everywhere, just run the random generation once for everyone.

Honestly what I'd like to see is a more adaptive system for itemization though. The choice of weapon/armor types is an important part of player freedom, but since you can't easily customize drops for them you could have 'power cores' drop or something. So you have base items from a vendor or some shit that you then enchant with your power core that has the cool ability.
Or just get off your lazy ass and make a real system to generate loot based off the player's party's feats/currently equipped gear. Stop giving me fucking gnome hooked hammers when not a single pawn can even equip it. Alternatively, stop allowing the player to spec into fucking spears when there's only two in the entire game meanwhile there's a new unique longsword literally every dungeon.

Game itemization is largely hand-made, hand-placed items. To the point that even though there are containers with random loot generation, I've been playing that game since launch and I only know of like one off the top of my head. There are no items with random stats. Random loot generation has more to do with giving wizards an opportunity to get a cool, rare scroll to add to their repertoire. To say more about the items themselves, there are a ton of unique items. The game is chock full of treasures and the game is huge, so there is enough variety to support a full team of six and plenty of unique play-styles. I like that items are dependable in that game. If you want to mix it up, you can get a randomizer.
