It's the trend in many games that the final blow must be a clean hit. There's a reason the icon for a chip damage kill in Street Fighter Alpha 2 was a block of cheese. That said, Garou:MotW also has chip damage KOs, so it's not that far out there for them to return.

Honestly this is like 95% of my dream game idea.

They're showing his Real Bout death for the umpteenth time. You can see the same South Town horizon in the background and Terry's wearing his FF3/Real Bout hat. Shun, Meiten, Antonov, Luong and Kukri being the only ones to survive is more than most fighting games bringing back newcomers. Most of T7's base roster went poof. Only 3 characters so far in SFIV/V have appeared in more than one game. It's not that people want newcomers, they want to see progression. I don't know why people say gamers play new fighting games for newcomers because an empty idea isn't a stable one. Every legacy fighter is like 9/10 veterans because they want to see these characters progress and change (not drastically, over time) which is why it feels like whiplash when an old character suddenly looks different or plays different. They might as well be newcomers in that case. The original MotW2's newcomers don't really look that interesting in hindsight it just seemed like new for the sake of new, which MotW already was and only got lucky compared to SFIII by putting more effort into what a "new generation" should look and play like

I didn't. Sylvie AND Najd came back as DLC in S2 and were basically revamped from ground up to function almost as brand new characters. My point was more so that S1, the planned roster of KOFXV, brought back the handful of characters I said wholesale from XIV because they were initially the only ones that mattered in the grand scheme of things. In fact, absolutely all of them were relevant to the on-going plot. With Shun being the "Hero", Antonov being the last game's final boss, Luong being the only character to be tied to the Geese arc in KOF and Kukri being the one who brought Ash back means that they cut any characters that weren't mandatory to finish XIV's plot threads

But that does mean Sylvie was genuinely popular enough to be brought back on her own terms

The problem isn't that those characters are playable, the real problem is those characters constantly coming back in the lore so story progression isn't allowed to advance in a significant way.
Dead or Alive had canonically dead characters who were still allowed to be playable, why does there need to be a correlation of characters being in the roster and automatically being alive? Even Kazumi in Tekken 7 has shown that you could have playable dead characters even if she was only a flashback character.

It's likely because roster slots are always an argument in all fighting games since imagine going out of your way to flesh out and develop a character solely for them not to matter in the game's lore. Feels like a waste when you could add other characters instead. This wasn't an issue in older games when clones were just head swaps, but once games went 3D it becomes an issue when you're wasting your time designing clones. So characters like Ken and Akuma who only stick around due to their legacy end up differing further from Ryu, who himself is finally starting to no longer just be boring Shoto man and is allowed to have unique moves to himself too. It's also why we get other retarded decisions like not bringing back Sean and instead making a brand new character from scratch. Now Sean AND Laura likely won't come back because you'd have to waste assets on one or the other. All of the SNK Kyokugens are lucky to be legacy characters

Yeah there's a lot of overlap with comic shit issues regarding writers. No SF game has really had the same dev team, even SFII switched hands between the CPS-1/CPS-2. Capcom is only the worst example, the main reason Tekken has at least remained consistent is because Harada's been in charge of the series since Tekken 3. If you want dev/writer consistency you need to go to smaller games like French Bread. SNK willingly got people from Garou involved for CotW so there's a lot more consistently here than just getting whatever newbie randos they could to shit out a new Fatal Fury game which would've likely half-assed the Garou plot that they're focusing on right now

This is why KOF plot threads get dropped so haphazardly frequently. Orochi and the first two NESTS games were handled by the same team at least. Shit didn't fully go sour until the bankruptcy. Lots of the XIV devs were poached from Dimps like Oda when SNK wanted to make games again. You can feel a lot of overlap with how SFIV revived SF as XIV revived KOF in my opinion. You contrast XIII and XIV and XIV feels more quirky and trying to emulate the past as accurately as it thinks it can manage versus XIII just trying to turn KOF into BlazBlue for hardcore gamers despite its more generic roster. Now we're so far removed from the writers who were trying to make K' work, the fact K' keeps showing up in games is utterly baffling since they clearly don't really care about him. Comments from Ureshino indicate K' was just outright supposed to be cut from XII regardless

Funny thing about that. There was a story/settings material book for character concepts and story ideas that the writer took with him when he left after 2000. This is why nothing's been done with Ron (the remaining staff knew just as much as we did) and why Whip was suddenly now a clone of K's dead sister (something Ureshino made up when the og writer kept Whip and K's origins a secret for the presumed non-bankrupt 2001). 2001 was when it got fucked, probably also why Ash Saga is a quasi-retreading of Orochi.

Having rev guard, hyper defense, jd cancels, low/high dodge attack makes me happy. The game has a lot of defensive machanics which is really rare nowadays since the focus is always rushdown. The damage is quite high tho since it's a fatal fury game so that's probably why.

There's not inherently a problem with games focusing on rushdown at the top, the issue is BRAINDEAD offense. Mindless mashing/constant RPS is not interesting at a top level deeper offense is far more interesting than the deepest defense but it's not common for a developer to have a game end in high level offense.

That's fine, COTW at least from a baseline is looking to be a much more pleasant game to play with the absence of drive rush-esque mechanics but expecting a huge exodus from SF6 to COTW is unlikely, what might happen at best instead is just a huge overlapping playerbase and in the best case scenario both games just co-exist with each other.

I think the big thing people are missing with the CotW gassing right now is that the major difference is CotW is offering variety and more in-depth mechanics that require learning fundamentals and most SF6 players do not learn fundamentals because all they have to do is get lucky with Drive Rush and then muscle memory their practiced combos. That's why it's so popular, the homogenized roster of shotos/rushdowns benefit the most from this while the older legacy characters that don't function without combos are left in the dust. I have no idea why they keep bringing back Dhalsim when the fucker is never allowed to be good

Is it really progression if you cut all of your old characters out for new characters entirely that have nothing to do with the old characters, or vaguely are related like shit with Sean/Jamie? The fact they cut concepts for a new Art of Fighting team and Mary/Yamazaki from base game just to avoid "too much Fatal Fury" only to release some of the shittiest, least played, least liked and completely forgotten newcomers in the franchise is really a move. We really could've just gotten Team China, Official Invitation and the new Kim Team and I think people would've been fine with the newcomers. Especially since most of who I listed were the characters that came back in XV anyway

Modern is an absolute pain and honestly an advantage at every level of play below the 1700mr+ range in sf6, and majority of the playerbase is going to be below that equivalent line in COTW.

The intermediate folks especially are going to be the ones suffering because they'll be at the level of play where the loss of feints & brakes won't make a difference since they won't be doing the optimal stuff anyway. It's their fault for not mastering the games advance level defense & combo mechanics on day 1 so they can fight the macro users. XII could've just added a proper tiered super meter and I would've been happy. I still don't understand the hate for that game. I like how adventurous it was mechanically and the hate for critical counters, a depleting bar that was empty after 10 seconds and capped out at about 70% with meter, was always overblown.

XII was the straw that broke the camel's back stretching their shit as thin as it could and snapping as a result. There was no reason to make XIII a sequel when it actually was the finished game. Even then, they shouldn't have finished a story arc with a brand new engine and graphics system because it ended up being the main reason almost every plot thread was dropped or rushed

If XII was decided on being a reboot rather than a sequel that would've helped alleviate the development issues significantly. Honestly I feel like they should have just bit the bullet and gone 3D instead and revived Fatal Fury with the HD 2D sprites but where we're currently at right now is fine, I like the end results. It's hard to argue with that, and it's my understanding that it released when it did purely because they were desperate for the return on the work they'd put in up to that point. Like "release now or there might not be a company to release the game later" sort of thing.

Truth be told the wacky ass planned KOFXII roster is definitely inferior to what we got in XIII, let alone XI's radicalized roster of SNK deepcuts. I think the core issue just stems that the sprites were not a good idea because it cost us so much personality and character in the gameplay for pretty visuals which is so surface level appealing. It doesn't help it's probably the most homogenized KOF since the Drive system really just encourages pitch perfect combos and as a result anyone without sauce is just robbed of potential usage

I'm personally only crying over Adelheid, Oswald and Momoko being cut. All for completely different reasons

The beta is going to have a offline tutorial mode and I suspect most ppl will just use that as a ghetto training mode. But since the beta is open I plan on making a room and logging into it from both my pc and console and practice that way before playing online. Rooms should have a online training feature.

I think I was able to make a much faster workflow than SNK, but is only 80% of the SNK quality, but like 0.0001% of the cost.

KOFXV really was just a side project to them lmao. We're probably gonna see all the pop vets like Mary, Yamazaki and Duck eventually then. I'll be generous and suggest CotW will tone down the season passes to 4 like the rest of fighting games for no reason that'll be a cool 30 characters minimum. There's not too much I'd really want back for Fatal Fury so once all the essentials are in I think this will definitely be SNK's magnum opus without contest. Only thing I really hope is they nail the story since that's really the only part they probably could fuck up at this point

Smart Style hasn't been explored at all at those event so this beta is very important for SNK to get feed back for it so it actually ends up being a true alternative control scheme like Modern in SF6 rather than some handicap mode that can't be used past the lowest level of play.

Because Modern takes away utility. There's literally no reason to use it when Drive Rush is more encompassing of a mechanic. If you practice your combo strings and then win the coin flip, it's an automatic win. Modern is just for lazy people or people who don't have the time to learn the game because they have to get back to work/school in an hour

So what? No dev is using that standard to evaluate Modern. Like Modern doesn't have to be the majority of the playerbase to be of importance, all it needs is to have a non trivial amount of users and play a factor in sales which it has done for SF6. About 1/4 of the player base for the game is Modern and SF6 success in Japan is in large part due to Modern, that's a massive success story especially compared to every previous attempt in the genre to offer a simple input option. To dismiss all this because the legacy controls is still the majority is beyond retarded, only an absolute fucking idiot would even think like that.

But normal inputs are Level 1, which means they have better frame data and can be canceled into super.

Taking a look and englishwise, it's pretty dire.
There are some fansites that translate some of the material (one does in-game stuff, another does miscelleneous tidbits from guidebooks), but until somebody in the west passionate about SNK lore decides to do something about it, you'll probably have a better time looking into the Japanese side with an online translator or something.

Check out Mad SNK Project if you care about English translations. Only goes up to Fatal Fury 3 but outside of Garou, SNK more or less fell the fuck off in general after 96 so they at least listed all the raw game stuff and self-hosted

It's a bit of both. He obviously doesn't try to use many of his actual assassination moves on his brother so that's a good deal of his arsenal that he just doesn't pull out but the main thing is that Andy gets really excited when fighting Terry, like genuinely borderline bloodlusted. Just feeling his brothers hand on his shoulder made him shiver with the urge to hit him with everything he had and he had to go jogging to cool his head off. Andy's at his best when he's calm and collected and focused. He's even stated to be able to easily wipe the floor with guys Terry loses to. But against Terry, he just gets overexcited and it prevents him from drawing out his full potential. He's like Ryu but if the Satsui no Hado came fucking with him specifically when he's fighting Ken.

Ah, thanks for the tip. It's such a shame that largest site of SNK info is literally filled with stuff of just one Mexican guy making shit up. Considering that the fandom wiki is the first (and usually the only) site that pops up when searching for anything SNK-related, newer non-Japanese speaking fans are gonna get absolutely fucked in the years to come. I've already seen people get confused over Vanessa's husband being alive or dead in the past, but the scale of this is much worse.

What Japanese wikis are available? Most fansites from the 90s and 2000s are long gone by now, and the few I could find are very sparse with info with only the basics. Hell, Japanese wikipedia even links to the English wikipedia in some cases due to lacking it's own pages, and English wikipedia also suffers from "inserting-shit-from-Chinese-manhua" syndrome (the SvC Chaos page literally has the plot from the Chinese manhua listed as the game's plot while the Japanese wikipedia page doesn't).

It's unfortunate, but unless the mods come back from their smoke break or somebody informs the masses, its a lost cause. I looked on T*tter to see if anyone is talking about it and it might just be a troll trying to win an argument by their headcanon in, which is crazy to think about.
I also remembered that the OP has a backup for the official KOF site and if its the one before SNK killed it to replace it with the new portal, that should at least have most of the team stories up to around 13 or 14 on it, though I don't think I took a deep look at it.

It's even worse: the wiki's admins and jannies are on the ESL Mexican's side. He's edited the wiki so much for the past five years that they automatically assume he's always right and will revert any changes anyone makes to the ESL's edits. I've even seen the ESL revert edits the admins make themselves, even the ones where the edits the admins make that are factually correct and they take it like cucks.
None of the fandom admins (or the Mexican ESL, for that matter) know Japanese or have access to any Japanese material other than a few websites (which they never check) so they don't even know what's true or not.
But yeah, I also think it's a lost cause. I've seen people outside the wiki mention trying to edit the wiki and add info from official sources but have long given up because they know it'll be reverted back to headcanon shit. Most non-Japanese speaking SNK fans are too lazy to check sources and just take it at face value because there are barely any scans of the countless books or magazines that are easily accessible. Since there isn't an alternative to the fandom and see that there's already a lot written up there, the masses jist don't care even if you alerted them.

To be slightly more generous towards him, he added most of the fanon stuff a couple years ago and now spends most of his time editing galleries and attempting to write descriptions but fails since he's not good at speaking English.
Most of the fanon stuff, from what I remember when I checked out the wiki a couple months back, was on pages detailing the KOF sagas or the various Teams. One example being the Rival Teams page listing people who weren't officially stated to be in a Rival Team. I call the admins cucks because I distinctly remembering one of them revertimg one of the changes someone made to the Rival Team page removing the non-rival team members. If you go on the pages now, there's an "Alternate" section he's added to most of the Team pages to stop people from removing them though he added a little blurb saying that the Alternate teams are the "true story".
The character pages were the ones he touched the least, thankfully.
He'd also have a habit of taking info from dubious sources, like various mugen sites, although it's been so long that I don't remember what he specifically used other than stage names since a couple of different mugen creators back in the day would make up stage names and I'd find those same names on the wiki, typos and all.
Don't know of it's changed since, but I remember looking at the page history and seeing multiple people attemping to remove them but having those edits reverted. I only remembered him today because I went to a page for one of the games and it was just so awfully written that I assumed that someone used an earlier version of ChatGPT to write it only to discover it was the same guy who added a bunch of fanon shit to the wiki years ago.
I also noticed that he loves putting the names of the games in bold which looks so awful. If you ever go on the fandom wiki and see a bunch of words in bold for no reason then you know he's edited the page lol

Adding onto this post since it hit the character limit, but I just did a bit of searching on Twitter and found another frequent SNK wiki editor express frustration at the wiki admins since they keep reverting his lore-related changes since they have no sources but leave up shit from the ESL who rarely, if ever, cites his sources other than "because I think so".
Secondly, a Japanese SNK autist I've been following for a while, @kof_fengmin, thinks that the SNK wiki is so bad that whenever there's a translation issue for some of the newer games he just assumes the translator took it from the SNK wiki since not only is it full of made up info, but he's even found that some of the Japanese itself is wrong (though I think most of it has been corrected by now)
I guess it was no secret the wiki was terrible and that I was just out of the loop for so long.

Yeah that doesn't work because the key part of KOF's main rivals is that they are in that sort of 'anti-hero' camp and not full villains. The Orochi team are just villains, and the Special Invitation team has Kukri, but he's never been a real rival to Shun'ei, and his team is literally just a bunch of randos compared to past Rival teams that have a clear connection (95: Hired by Geese, 96: Iori and Orochi shit, 01: NESTS, XI and XIII: Trying to stop Ash, XV: Isla). Hell with XV, Krohnen is now more of a rival than a villain, starting to get to Iori tier (Just less homosexual)

They're revealing the DLC in March, so we should be getting the last few next month. And no, there being a beta wouldn't/shouldn't matter. It wouldn't make sense anyway. Why would they not reveal characters because of a beta? That's literally just more advertisement and would also attract more people to play said beta. Though this is SNK in 1999+24 we're talking about here. They can take actions that just don't seem understandable to most.

Maybe the beta has Kain and that's why they're taking their sweet fucking time. He seems to be the character that they're the most focused on, especially given he's the last Garou character in the audio teaser
