I have nothing going on in my life. Not depressed or anything, just kinda stuck as I learn to deal with a longterm injury and retrain for a new career. I had thoughts of making my own shitty little Musou clone since I have al this free time.
Just wonder if any anons here might care to play it if it actually got finished. I can't really do anything fancy since I am just one(1) guy.
I probably won't even get started but here are the main points:
>Unity engine (or something else that can still do true 2D)
>Top down view, 2D sprites
>Movesets will be based on weapons/race combination.
>There will be some lore about how in bad times some people ascend to becoming living demigods of war. Your PC is of course one of them but there will be others fucking shit up too, make sure to stop them to help your faction.
>The game's name will probably be named after the above concept.
I have a part 2 for this but let me know if any of this is unrealistic for someone who never made a game before or if anything about this seems to basic/dull.

I would like to keep things relativity simple. It is a beat'em up first and foremost. There are strategy elements for making allies, collecting and spending resources carefully, and recruiting NPCs of talent into your faction. Also making sure you recruit the 'right' ones because some of them will hate each other or you based on personality types. They might betray you or break away into their own faction if their loyalty gets too low. But ultimately you should be able to fight your way out of even the worst station. Maybe there can be a hard mode where the enemy becomes unbeatable when their morale is max and your morale is very low.
In terms of campaign mechanics this is what I have so far:
>There are 'threads of fate' where certain special events will trigger.
>If one faction (the player's or an NPC) is dominating and already has half the map by themselves and everyone else are still small, a desperate team up in the vein of "Battle of Red Cliffs" will trigger. The outcome will influence how the second half of the campaign may go.
>If (A) the dominate force won then things will be great for them for awhile. But later there will be another event to still have an interesting end game e.g. a sudden usurp taking half the kingdom.
>If (B) The dominant force loses, they may either (1) balkanize if the happiness and loyalty of the faction was barely held together anyway, or (2) they just may be inactive for awhile and lose provinces to their nearest neighbors but the biggest factions in the coalition will take this chance to become aggressive and absorb or annex the less factions in the coalition, leading to either the final 2-4 majors factions of that campaign.
I have a bit more to add but I need to change browsers or something. Firefox keeps locking up on me for some reason. May need to switch to either Brave or Vivaldi.

The only thing I want to mention about campaign mechanics is that I want to avoid the thing of "The campaign is already over half way. The second half is just slowly crushing the remaining players one by one who don't realize it yet." And IMO that is fun sometimes. But I would like to come up with a special event battle that feels satisfying and have it make sense somehow.
I don't know how to describe the theme I would aim for. Just that it is overall more lighthearted and not dark and edgy with blood, guts, and grimdark suffering everywhere. But not 'cutesy' either. Best I can mention is that I want to have more nuance than the personalities characters in Dynasty Warriors but it won't be anymore graphic in terms of violence either.
Maybe it may have to be more 'silly' because I only have one real idea for a race/faction so far. Partially inspired by my love of the Yellow Turbans. It's not exactly the same though but the situation is honestly a bit fucked up if thought about seriously:

I tried the Origins demo. As someone who has somehow never played a Souls like before, I like the changes to the combat system, but the dodge seems a bit weak. Even if you land the perfect dodge, you just get whacked by the next attack in the enemy officer's combo, and annoyingly landing a perfect dodge doesn't neutralize their hyper armour. Maybe I just need to practise more, but the demo really throws you in the deep end with just the regular stage, let alone Lu Bu showing up at the end.
I'm really glad morale actually fucking matters again.

This may be a letdown but I can't see myself making a slew of characters unique in appearance and gameplay so they may all just be 'generics' outside of oddities like a dragon lord. It may depend if I exclude character death and keep the timespan of the game short. The movesets would probably have to be worked out as I make the combat (if I end up doing anything) but in general the aim is to be stylized/flashy and fun like in Dynasty Warriors. Spear users having spin attacks and slashes will be a thing. One thing I would like to do different is have mounted combat be fun and worth something. And with that have DnD style weapon counters, polearms have damage and general attack bonuses against mounted units, blunt weapons have bonuses against heavy armor wearers, etc. DW3 was my favorite in terms of intensity so I think it would be cool for peons to also have a full moveset with elite units having special attacks and able to execute stratagems on their own.
With full on fantasy there would be things like flying mounts, trained creatures and medieval-ish mechanical constructs (not necessarily steampunk). Using a weapon with certain elements can have a huge situational advantage such as fire scaring beast units away, lightning disabling constructs, wind being really good at anything flying based.
I can't really say anything about attack patterns or what the moves look like but I do know I would like to include...

>Blocking, dashs, jumping, and dodges will be a standard.
>At least one anti-guard move to punish hurtling.
>All movesets will at least have a 4 hit change, a guard-breaking heavy attack, an air launcher (knock over ledges for massive damage), a knockback attack, a parry/counter attack, a midair attack chain, a ground slam attack and the ability to stab knocked-down units so lying down is not safe for them either.

Hey new recruits! Want to try out the older PS2 games? If you have at least an up to date midrange PC they emulate well on PCSX2! They have not even been in print for over 10 years, they're so different that they don't even 'compete with their new stuff,' and they are not sold digitally anywhere (a few Japan-only exceptions) so there is no moral problem here. Get them before the world powers fucks over all emulation forever!
And if you're someone who tried emulating them forever ago; disc swapping now works! There are still some graphical oddities and weirdness but that is just par the course for 99% of emulation. Remaining PS2 hardware are failing and their discs are rotting and buying used games can be oddly expensive without a guarantee they even work, so you might as well try this free method first. They even have all the manuals (for the USA versions at least).

The bad:

Cutting back SW4s roster is a pro, some of the worst newcomers koei have ever done, the sengoku era fucking sucks because if you have a big roster about 60% of them just have nothing to do

DESU, I'm actually glad DW Origins is cutting down the roster too. I'd rather have 10~20 well designed characters (both gameplay and design/writing wise) than 90+ characters where more than half of them are literal whos designed only to appeal to waifu/husbando fags, like the entire Guan/Zhang cluster fuck. We were fine with just Guan Ping and Xingcai.

I have nothing against Yinping herself, but I dislike how she got a deified form in WO4 over, I dunno, some from the third kingdom of the Three Kingdoms. The fourth deified DW character should've been SSX, and I'm not even a big fan of her.

I agree, but I know roster cuts are one of the main things musou gamers tend to complain about.

Either way, I think SW5 was pretty fun. Nobunsga felt really good to play as, especially his adult version, and I love this game's take on Imagawa Yoshimoto and Hisahide Matsunaga.

Ping in his own story in 5 survives Fan Castle and has a grudge match against Lu Xun at Yiling (since Lu Meng isn't around for Ping to directly get revenge), but admittedly that's it. Then 7 added Xing and Suo, so Ping has nothing to do even if you go ahistorical. At least with Xingcai you later have the angle of her as Liu Shan's wife/babysister.
To be fair, Guan Xing and Zhang Bao from the beginning would've made more sense.

It's a little funny to me that Li Dian getting paired with Yue Jin has made him show up earlier than he or even his dad should appear. He shouldn't be appearing until around Guandu

Perhaps, this is probably the most likely but I'm not sure it would have been so straightforward

From most to least certain, I'd rate it Jin > Wei > Wu > Shu
Jin's hypothetical existing is basically a formality: they win not much later anyways.

Cao Cao would have been in a very advantageous position winning at Chibi, but the allied forces would likely continue to resist as long as the political capital to do so remained. It wasn't even his last major invasion attempt on Wu, as the battles of Ruxu in 213 and 217 were both pivotal defensive victories for Wu but much less dramatic ones than Chibi.

I think Hefei gets a lot of focus because it was such a monumental blunder for Wu, but it wouldn't have been a game changing victory for them. Invading across the Yangtze was still slow and painful both ways, and Cao Cao was already operating under the assumption of it falling.

Fan Castle has so much going on it's hard to speculate. Where do you even start, like does it just entail Guan Yu surviving and forcing a Wei retreat? A hostile Wu would still hold Jing behind him. I don't think this is majorly impactful unless you go with a version where Guan Yu is unimpeded in the siege and Sun Quan sits back unwilling to commit to attacking Shu. The loss of Hanzhong and breach of the Central Plains in such a short time would undoubtedly stir dissent internally, especially with Cao Cao's death shortly thereafter.

IMO the most interesting what-if would be Zhou Yu seizing Jing ahead of Liu Bei and initiating the Two Kingdoms strategy, though I question if they'd have the manpower to stretch out to Shu and without Liu Bei's familial connection easing him into power there.

Could work, in general I think for Jin as a faction to fight for or against, they need more enemies, right now they don't which is just Koei being half assed and trying to do everything in one game rather than have two different types of DW's, The classic 184-234, and the Jin era of 235-280.

famitsu interview doesn't have a ton of new info, mostly early dev snippets

I hope the stage events are as infrequent as the ps2 games. In DW8 there was some scripted event being shit out every 30 seconds and most of them was stuff the player had to do or allies wouldn't progress etc. I didn't like that at all.

origins is more PS2-like in its stage design, they even outright said it's not like 7/8's linear stages. sishui gate is a perfect example which is probably why they chose it for the demo. you can ignore everything on the map and immediately rush the final army, you can even do it in a way where you save the 3 officers that die to hua xiong. if yuan shao is delayed long enough, another officer like gongsun zan or even han dang will set up the final charge instead.

another good example is guandu, where instead of wuchao being a mandatory objective to progress the stage and story, it's instead a gameplay objective that's constantly shitting out reinforcements to zhang he's giant army, but you're free to ignore it and try winning the battle a harder way

I wish the AI was dynamic, but sadly the demo shows it's just like all the previous mainline games were they just follow their scripted routes. By dynamic I mean if an ally is struggling, other allies who are free could decide to go and help them, or if the main camp/commander is struggling surviving allies could pull back and try and defend it. These actions could be dynamic AI decisions made depending on whats happening in the battle, i.e not hard-scripted events.

I guess this is more of an "Empires" thing, but after all this time I was hoping the main series could be updated with these kind of AI advancements to make the battles more dynamic. This would also allow them to remove some of the outdated artificial difficulty were they basically make your allies suck to try and add some challenge, instead of just making the combat the challenging part.

Allies being useless in non-Empires Musou games largely comes down to morale management. The older games did a poor job of emphasising how important it is, nor did they give the player good means of managing it beyond defeating officers and taking bases ASAP. It didn't help that some games have stages where events heavily rig morale against you, with DW4 Nanman Campaign being the most blatant example.
As for Origins, morale seems to snowball too easily in either direction, but I'm putting that down to the demo stage rather than a fundamental issue with the gameplay. We'll see how it goes with the full release. My main concern is that they front loaded the game, and phoned in all the bosses after Lu Bu.

Nightowl and Mussang Base have both said Sishui Gate is more of an outlier with regards to morale, particularly because of the swing from Hua Xiong and Yuan Shao charging out immediately. Mussang's been doing daily non-spoiler impressions and talking about morale lately, he says that when you play a map smart, Origins has the most reliable allies in the series, but things can fall apart fast if you neglect your allies where they're weak or ignore high courage enemy officers. He joked that someone who practiced killing Lu Bu over and over on Hero in the demo may still just end up getting killed by a bunch of generic Yellow Turban officers if they have no tactical sense and let all their allies die.

They're prioritizing officers who were mostly active in the pre-3K era, and Man Chong's notable feats are mostly after Chibi. Shu lacking officers is probably why they ultimately opted for Xu Shu over Cao Ren and it sounds like Cao Ren will likely be one of the playable officers in an Origins 2 to compensate.

Yoshimoto went from joke fighter to Nobunaga era Lu Bu, while other characters like Shingen, Hisahide, and Motonari went from friendly grandpa, japanese Dastardly, and kindly scholar to more serious villains and/or antagonists. Giving characters like Dong Zhuo and Zhang Jiao more threatening characterizations since they are among the big enemies faced would be appropriate.

Block with L1. You can move while guarding to remain facing in the same direction, but you won't actually block incoming attacks unless you remain still. You also can only block attacks from the front. I think some of the other games have abilities that let you block attacks to your back, but those don't exist in DW5 in particular.

For older Musou games, some character stories make more historical sense if you treat that character as a hybrid of their parent(s) and themselves. Like how SW1 Yukimura spends more time fighting his father's battles than his own.

This will make the guys who are not playable if they're going to be not playable at feel more like you need to talk of individuals instead of looks who just minions with a unique design In this game. especially for those who are just started with Dynasty Warriors Orchard.

I'm of the opinion that, if WO were to continue, they should go full in on the mythology concept and drop the DW/SW crossover aspect. That part just doesn't really have anywhere else to go after WO3, with WO4 feeling like it had to try and justify its existence.
