Halo 2 needs a hell of a lot of work to fix the campaign, while CE's campaign was already nearly perfect. There's a reason why people were so disappointed/confused with 2 on release. It introduced a lot of cool ideas but the devs didn't have time to flesh them out or properly balance the difficulty or give it the Bungie polish it deserved, plus so many things were cut that it's a skeleton of what it should have been. Even the art style is missing. The modder also completely reworked the health system, and now he has to rebalance everything according to that new system, practically remaking the game almost from scratch because every single encounter needs to be reworked to accommodate it. And there's no way he's gonna get it right on the first round.

Compared to simply just tightening up the already in-place system with CE, CE's mod was a just a rebalance. 2's mod is practically a remake with a complete overhaul of some of the core mechanics. And he's gonna be testing, redoing, and retesting a lot more too, so expect the QA process to eat up even more time. The game is going to feel very different compared to the vanilla version. He's never been this ambitious with any of his mods, and I'd rather he take his time with it instead of rushing it out like how Bungie was forced to rush it out, unfinished and unpolished.

Wonder what version of Cortana they're gonna go with.
Since the VAs are getting older, I'd imagine this is also the time to replace Cortana and Chief's voice actors. They'll probably recast all the other characters if that happens. It's not gonna be the same.

He does have a few rebalance mods under his belt and he's almost halfway through this one. I think if this was his first mod, then yeah I'd assume he would burn out real quick. But I don't think he'd embark on this project if he wasn't confident enough to do it in the first place. He's got a clear vision for it it seems, enough to make dev vlogs about it to put his thoughts and plans into place and stay focused. He's got a sizable community cheering him on and giving feedback too, so I think that helps.

Jen Taylor's not that old so Cortana doesn't need to be recast.
Downes however has one foot in the grave, and Keith David's pretty old too. The rest of Halo's OG cast hasn't existed in 15+ years so recasting them wouldn't be as much of a shock.

Don't remember. Sometime in the last 4-6 years

Genuinely can't decide between 1, 2, and 3. 1 kinda has the coolest gameplay, because it's got the best AI and the most interesting gameplay scenarios (Silent Cartographer and Two Betrayals stand out). 2 definitely has the best story and presentation. I love it's mid-00's Breaking Benjamin stuff and Chief at his best. Arbiter stuff is neat. Most imaginative locations. Halo 3 definitely has the best campaign level in the whole series: The Covenant is epic. Halo 3's warthog run is also arguably the peak of the series. Halo is never going to top that high.
Honorable mention to Reach for Nightfall.

Didn't watch. I respect them for asserting that it's its own spinoff timeline, instead of pissing all over fans, asserting a new canon, like Disney did with Star Wars. Some of the action seems ok. Not sure about the character drama. Doesn't seem to have what interests me about Halo.

I agree and here's why: Sometimes I hug my pillow and imagine I’m talking to Agryna for multiple hours. I feel an inhuman sense of relation to this character that I’ve projected my emotion and love onto due to my own fear and lack of companionship.

The idea that I might have someone I could love in the way I love this fictional character is all that has kept me going and it’s a horrible, horrible reason that’s perverted by my own selfish wants. I don’t deserve someone like that and given what I’ve seen so far I don’t think I’ll ever find someone like that. My mental state has deteriorated over the past several years and my perception of reality is warped to the point where she literally feels real to me. On December 9th, 2022, I’m going to kill myself and finally be removed from this schizophrenic hell that I’m slowly being sucked into.

Anyways good for you fellas that a new MCC update coming out, that sounds wonderful!

Meh. It's certainly better now though than it was at launch lol. I think the best part about it is the armor customization (the microtransactions suck balls, but man some of the armors look really cool and I can spend hours playing dressup with my Spartans) and the fact you can play with bots (which is like a built-in difficulty adjuster for multiplayer, especially because Infinite is way too sweaty)

Great. It doesn't need frivolous updates from 343. The modding community can take it from here. Really looking forward to all the future mods and new customs.

Yuck. I don't even like the action scenes or CGI. It doesn't look like Halo. I prefer the live action Bungie trailers for 3 and Reach.

More Halo, less of.../hg/'s...well.../hg/ness, if you will. The game isn't even dead yet the shitposting/derailing is way too wild. There's so much variety of things we can discuss and argue about yet it's like /hg/ is the designated porta-potty. Actually dead generals of actual schizo games are better at staying on topic than here. The Sonic and Undertale generals are more well-behaved, for example, despite those communities attracting the more flamboyant and theatrical types of passionate fans. Halo seems like such a normie inoffensive corpo product in comparison so I don't get why they're drawn to this game in particular. It's a bog-standard slow-paced sci-fi arena shooter. You'd think it would be more chill.

The rules on it just got updated recently. I remember seeing a sticky about it a few weeks ago or something, and remember there specifically being a limit on it and how it's used. Like you can say it at random once or twice, but then saying it again has to be used in a manner where it makes sense to use it, like in a quote or something. That's what I understood at the time when skimming through it. Like you can't just spam it anymore.

Since everybody here can’t drop actual spicy takes to save their lives I will. Halo Online/Eldewrito before the 6.0 update was better. Turning it into essentially a 1v1 Halo 3 port was a mistake even if we got MCC on PC out of it. This highlighted that the Halo fanbase seems utterly incapable of meaningfully iterating on the OG bungie gameplay without doing the same mistakes as 343 did. Sometimes even worse (See the halo X in halo Y meme).

I've got a bug in my CE slayer mod and I'm losing my mind trying to fix it.
Rockets started feeling like shit at some point. The explosion radius seems way too small compared to default Reach settings, meaning you tend to need either a direct hit or 2 rockets to kill someone. An indirect hit would leave a player with about half health every time, and this is while the player is standing within normally lethal explosion radius.

I had a system for applying different traits to a player depending on what weapon they were holding, in order to adjust damage for weapons individually.
Even with rockets at 300% damage, it still takes 2 shots to kill a player at a range where it would normally only take 1 with normal Reach settings.
I set all damage resistance settings to default - had been using damage resistance at 50% to buff grenades, and then set all damage output settings for all weapons to default. Still got the bug.

Noticed I had a respawn trait setting to set damage resistance to 150% for 3 seconds on respawn, to give a small buffer against getting killed at spawn. It shouldn't have affected anything, but I turned it off anyway.
Still got the glitch.

Set player damage resistance to 50%.
This worked, rockets seemed to work as intended. Or rather they seemed too powerful, but at least it wasn't underpowered.
I exited the game, tweaked a few things in the gametype that should have been totally unrelated to player damage/damage resistance, and the bug came back.

I have a few systems in my script to check the amount of shields a player has, in order to check when to apply different levels of the plasma weapon hit stun effect, but none of that should be affecting player damage resistance, or boosting shields or health.

I'm at a loss. The rest of the gametype is almost feature complete, but rockets not working as intended is a big deal. I've tried everything obvious I can think of to fix it.
If it comes to it, I might have to re-create the mod line-by line

tried to play h2 coop with my friend yesterday but it kept immediately dc'ing both of us from the session as soon as we loaded into Sacred Icon.

we loaded into Cairo Station to see if was a connection issue, and that worked just fine. we both loaded into Sacred Icon in singleplayer and that also worked just fine, so it's not one of us being unable to load the level. we both verified files, and all of them successfully validated with nothing missing

I also get consistent co-op disconnects on Halo 2, albeit not on Sacred Icon.
I think the netcode is just fucked and can't properly account for players loading the map at different speeds or something.

Tie between SPV3 and Ultimate Firefight Series, the breadth of content, variety and replayability for both of these is so good.

After that there are two amazing missions on the Ark tbf, but then there's a shitty one and the finale and that's it. Plus the plot was wack, gravemind jobbed so hard. That whole thing was forced. No one asked Franky or whoever to turn Cortana into the enemy. She was perfectly fine being an AI in my head. Even that 7 years lifespan was totally arbitrary. why not make it 70 years, or 700 years? I don't care if Bungie thought that up first or 343, but the way Halo 4 and 5 treated it was too forced. It was just unnecessary drama for the sake of drama. Halo 4 completely ruined the story of Halo. They messed up the Forerunners, the Prometheans, Didact, everything. And as for 'Why bother putting it in then if it doesn't do anything', same reason why armor customization is in the game despite it not affecting the actual gameplay mechanics, because some people think it looks cool. I think sprint looks and feels stupid in Halo and I don't like how it negatively affects the gameplay, but I'm not gonna complain if they implement it like this. We're already really close to it being like this in Infinite. They just have to nullify it completely and remove the slide mechanic.

Ultimate Firefight Series is great because it's so lively and you don't feel lonely when playing it by yourself. Normal Firefight in Reach/ODST is kind of depressing by yourself after a few rounds, but in Ultimate Firefight there's so much variety and you can build up a nice little army and then it becomes a proper battlefield.

I always switch over to this if I can't find any matches on BTB/Heavies, or if matchmaking is really kicking my ass all day. It's really comfy. Just make sure to avoid Heroic or Legendary by yourself because it's impossible to keep your team alive at that difficulty, and then you're just gonna be running away and running out of ammo for the rest of the wave.

You don't, lol. But it does help if you have a bunch of Elites and ODSTs around since you can equip them with Hammers too. I usually treat that wave as a 'reset'. If you happen to have a transport hog or something, jump into that along with the power weapons you want the moment you hear the warning about hammer brutes. That way you can at least have a few survivors with some guns to give them on the next wave. You can easily rebuild your army in a couple waves so you're not gonna be without them for long, especially when a boss wave starts. Then the game will send you spartans with rockets and stuff, so don't worry too much. Your hero units will be fine on their own ad revive themselves after the wave, so prioritize extraction for the units that can't revive.

Honestly, I enjoyed reading the Halo 3 terminals. They were really mysterious and it was fun trying to imagine how the Forerunners might have been like just from those journals/messages. Combined with the music it was just so good, Halo 3 has a very mysterious aura for me because of them. And it wasn't in your face compared to how Bungie themselves treated the Covenant or 343 with the Forerunners by giving us way too much information.

And for how much we shit on 4 and Franky for ruining Halo, we did get Halo 4 Tana. So...that's something, if nothing else.

Man, I used to go onto Halo 3 matchmaking and immediately get invited to Jenga, Halo on Halo, Fatman on Chubby Stadium, Ghostbusters, Duck Hunt, Left4Dead, Quantum V2, Smear the Queer, Poopchute, 30 Days of Night, etc. Then ODST, then Reach was just a level grind. There was little controversy and Firefight is rightfully fondly remembered.

I like how the "canon" reason for there being no Elites in ODST is because the Brutes in Regrets fleet had super secret orders to kill the Elites.

The reason why we don't see brutes on Delta Halo is because Regrets sent all his monkeys into the Sentinels meat grinder to find the Sacred Icon. Notice how there are no Elite corpses in the first part of that mission.

Earth not having Brutes in H2 can't reasonably be explained lore wise. Something something gameplay/lore segregation.

While The Banished are overall more fun to fight, part of me has to realize that The Storm era Covenant is objectively more realistic

Banished literally are just "OH YEA REMEMBER THE COVENANT....THIS ENTIRE TIME THE BANISHED EXISTED AND WERE JUST AS POWERFUL" Based off Halo Wars 2. Yet somehow there's no mention of them in 2/3. However Storm makes sense on a lore level.

Halos writing in general since the end of 3 is in a “damned if you do damned if you don’t” situation. It doesn’t matter if the Storm covenant was written “realistically” as people were mad that you fought the same aliens from the OG trilogy again. Even though making new ones would probably lead to a whole new list of problems (prometheans) like new weapons that would either 1 be to similar or the old ones or 2 be to different for people to want to learn. (See people raging over the storm rifle replacing the plasma rifle).
And if you brought the old factions back it leads to halo wars 2 problem of making 3s ending redundant. I remember people baseding out over the flood coming back even though the flood coming back made firing the halo at the end of 3 redundant.

Playable Elites, specifically the Arbiter in Halo 2, is what gave us the overly redundant sandbox that is still plaguing the series. The campaign would suck if you had to gun down other Elites with no headshot weapon, so they needed to introduce their own rifle and sniper. And it only continued from there.

I've come to dislike the carbine, mainly for its affect on the campaign. In CE you could dodge and weave elites plasma weapons and needlers, but in 2 they gave some of them hitscan, which makes them much less fun to fight.

Although even elites with plasma rifles in 2 are much harder to dodge, but that's besides the point.

I don't like that either because it completely goes against a design goal of CE. The AI were meant to have slow projectile weapons because dodging bullets is more fun than being hit by something you can't even see until it impacts.

AI in Halo 2 track you really hard, they did it on purpose because you could effectively circle-strafe Elites in CE and not take damage.

The splaser is an awful weapon that has a terrible effect on btb.

On maps with 1 on each base, it effectively makes vehicles at the start of the game death traps, and on maps with a central splaser, which ever team gets control will usually just snowball into complete map control.

The counterplay is a joke, since all the guy with the splaser has to do is aim the laser pointer into cover/the ground before pointing it at the vehicle at the last second. It's just acts as a one shot hitscan weapon from anywhere on the map.

H3 has way too many maps with it, I'm glad Reach toned the amount (plus 4 shots vs 5).

After having played tons of CE (95% ctf) and 2 btb on MCC, I think 3 has my least favorite btb of the Bungie games. Doesn't help that on MCC half the maps are those shitty sandbox ones, but even still the balance is just off.

Reach has paper mache vehicles and dmr cross mapping, but it feels less snowbally than 3, and as long as you aren't retarded and run out into the middle of the map, you can usually avoid getting cross mapped. Also think the btb map pool is better.

CE ctf is peak (btb slayer is a mess due to spawn system). A big part about what makes it so fun is the teleporters, which I feel are missing from modern halo. Most CE btb maps had tons of them, which made more routes viable to run the flag. Vehicles were pretty weak though, mainly just used for transport aside from backwards scorpion trolling.

I don't think any halo ever got the vehicle-infantry balance totally right, but I do think H2 was the closest. The rockets were pretty OP in terms of tracking, but not nearly as dominating as the splaser. Plus all the vehicles were strong, including the banshee which didn't need the banshee bombs. Also had a great map pool. Sucks that's it takes ages to get matches nowadays. Everyone is playing 3.

Halo 3 vehicles are really hard to deal with unless you have the very specific hard-counters to them, in which case they're useless. Being a warthog duo is one of the easiest things you can do in that game to rack up high sprees, just as long as you don't lose laser control.

That’s sadly a side effect of higher graphics fidelity and them being more “grounded” and thus have to be more realistic as actual locations that can exist in the halo universe compared to say a floating forerunner box in space like the CE maps where.
I wished we got more Covenant aesthetic MP maps personally.

It's even okay in H3. People still manage to get decent vehicle plays even when the enemy has the laser. Exception being Standoff, which sucks monkey cocks.
Also, learn to count your laser shots. They are very audible in H3.
