I have a question of a somewhat legal nature. In North America you can get away with an M rating (17+) for light nudity, especially if it's just tits. Genitals can more easily bump it up to AO (18+), it's a gray area. However keep in mind that a lot of games that get away with it are from big publishers, who may have more connection to the ESRB to ensure they get an M rating.
An M rated game can be sold on consoles, but not an AO rated game.
Other regions tend to be more strict.
If you sell only on Steam, you don't need an agency rating at all, you can just use Steam's rating thing which is less strict.

Note that rating boards and Steam tend to be more strict toward anime artstyles and underage characters.

easy choices are getting taken leaving only high hanging fruit most can't get. look at all those games with the white and black protagonist in a colorful world. makes work so much easier while the designs for the character are so simple that the only way forward for new devs is to make more complex designs. now add a bit of woke npc devs and you end up with stuff like top right. both on the bottom look like hipster or western art.

That's the problem with the /v/ one. As a gamer I'd assume you guys are trying to get me to buy your games. I can't draw
I can't make music
I can't make 3D models
I can't program very well
but I see gamedev as a way to give some kind of self imposed balance to my life, with nobody forcing me to do anything
I'm focusing on programming right now because I'll be able to use that in other domains as well and I might take some weekends to practice drawing later on

Realistically, nothing really changes. Some MS-paint style card and idle games get upgraded to AI art instead. Maybe some AI porn games. If you're a beginner programmer, AI act as a decently helpful interactive personal tutor. That's about it.

It's C++. Basically, I had a vector full of all my enemies. All the enemies were also added to a quadtree. I deleted an enemy from the vector, but I was NOT removing it from the quadtree, which is why it crashed. I'm not sure why the crash doesn't occur in release mode.
The fix was to make it so that all the enemies are added to the quadtree every frame, and at the end, clear the quadtree. The reason I wasn't doing this before is because many of the enemies are completely stationary, so there's no reason for them to be added and removed each time.

I do grocery shopping once per week, usually takes one hour. When I was working as a contractor and lived in a hotel I had to make groceries every day, but my hotel was very close to my work and groceries were much smaller and took less time, like 10 minutes max.

Well that's probably why it's slow now, you want to add enemies to the quadtree when enemy is spawned, and remove it when it's despawned/killed/whatever.

Hey guys tell me what I should add next! I've got some code I can reuse for most of this stuff.

1. Lasers (pew pew)
2. Click on something and use a popup menu to do stuff (like maybe orbit for example; will take some extra work but I have some of the code already, don't think I could have it ready before DD ends).
3. Console with a custom interpreted programming language to interpret commands.
4. Turning is something that takes time. There is acceleration when you hold the key and deceleration when you let go. Something that would be neat would be to have a way for a ship to path to a coordinate without taking the easy way out. It has to use the same controls as the player.

Let me know what you think. I think I might try for number 4 first and then some of the others.

Yeah, but because of the quadtree code, doing so isn't exactly trivial. And plus, since some enemies move, they have to be treated specially, which is just a pain.
I think I'll keep the fix in. I got the quadtree code from this article, and with the fix, I'm now doing it the way they recommend.

Well that's probably the issue since you copy pasted the solution it may not fit your use case, with my 2D physics code I just have Level::addEntity functions and Level::removEentity functions and then I can just send it off to the physics world like pic related and then that just calculates the cell index in the partitioned space to erase an element from a list, which is quite cheap. I can add/remove/query 100s of entities in microseconds in debug mode.

Actually, looking at the Java code you linked, you already have the insert method in that code which can be used to dynamically add entity to the physics world when creating an entity, you just need to add reverse-logic and just calculate the index again with getIndex method and do objects.erase or whatever.

Still blocking out the dungeon, also started working on the event system today for both opening chests and general repeating events like when you get locked into an area fighting an enemy, or initiating small cutscenes. I forgot that I wanted to enter the steam couch co-op fest with this game, but it's at the start of feb. Which means I would need a demo completely finished within a bit less than a month...extremely tall order, but I know it would really help me with wishlists, so Im going to work like hell to have a demo ready, even if it's only 15 min or so.

Nah they don't move, they're static, you and the enemy are locked in that space, prevented from leaving the parameter until you die, or the enemy(or enemies) dies.

Would it make any sense to have stat based combat in a first person RPG something like Daggerfall? So stuff like the game rolling to hit, evade, block instead of adding action elements into it. I was wondering what if you embrace the RPG side of it instead of making it some mismash where both intermingle awkwardly. Oh yes that is important. I hate it when you just swing at the enemy and get no feedback on if you hit or miss. I think I'd solve it with a combination of sound effects, visual effects, animation and an optional combat log of sorts. I agree that missing feels bad but that's mostly when the game's combat is that sort of weird mix of action and RPG where you have a chance to hit but you're still trying to move in combat to optimize not getting hit. Daggerfall and Morrowind were really bad about that. What if you could give the player the expectation that the combat is going to play out like an RPG, not like an action game. I need to prototype it to see how it feels.

Cinemachine is an official unity package, it's just modular so you don't need to download it if you don't need it. I do agree it's retarded to put into beginner tutorial, since beginners should make their own camera logic from scratch to truly understand the mechanics of it.

e.g. there's also bad games that nobody cares about, and there's bad games that have a hidden promise, like "this will be the next sims game", or "this will be the next city builder", which plays with people's feelings.
ofc this can mean both total rage at you for playing with peoples feelings, or it can create total gratitude, because people feel like you care about their demands and try to solve it.

i think the reason why rich people keep getting richer, is because they approach making something differently from a desperate poorfag.

For the most part they were what I expected from seeing them in the thread.

in godot, I have a node2d as the root of my main scene, is there a way to expand a gui control to cover the entire window without having to use a script? obviously controls can be configured to fill their container, but there doesn't seem to be like a top level container representing the window itself that can be filled

like say I just wanted one button that takes up the window and automatically resizes when the window is resized

I'm aware that I can just add a container and script it to change its size on a resize callback, but I'm trying to cut out unnecessary scripts if there's a way to make the engine do the work

I have hundreds of games, I don't buy any indies unless they're at least -75%, often more. The ideal for me is -90% in a bundle. 20 dollars indie game is rarer than a white crow, and you need to have strength of Shovel Knight, Hollow Knight, Darkest Dungeon or Blasphemous to sell game to masses for that initial price.

Because it's difficult to do research to make sure things are in public domain. I don't have a dedicated lawyer or whatever to do that for me.
For instance I can search for the 9th symphony of Beethoven and find something and think it's OK to use because Beethoven died like forever ago right? But it might be some arrangement someone did just a few years ago, and original arrangements are entitled to copyright so I would actually not be allowed to use it.
So it's challenging to find a reputable source that can attest for something being in fact public domain
As for art it's ambiguous whether a photograph of a public domain work is itself in the public domain or instead if the photographer is entitled to the copyrights of it.
Wikipedia says that is allowed in the US: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Image_use_policy#Public_domain
But that doesn't mean in other countries the same wouldn't apply. In particular in the images of ~200 year old paintings I've acquired from Japanese collections come with notices that say you need to message the owner to ask for permission when using in commercial products.
Naturally they can claim anything and it's a different matter whether what they claim or not is backed up by the law but I don't have a lawyer, I can't afford to pay a dedicated lawyer and I know nothing of Japanese law

For these reasons it's often easier for me to paint something original than to research something public domain to use.

I’m still pretty early on in working on my major long term project but have been stuck on figuring out how to actually start. I’ve tried looking at godot because I heard it was marginally easier to use but was so confused I became discouraged from it, gave unreal a glance too because I was told it’s got similarities to blender (which I’m much more familiar with) but I still don’t know what I should be doing first or looking for.

When you export a Vector3 variable you get this neat interface in the editor to change XYZ values. Is it possible to write a custom export that looks the same for those QRS values?
The entire thing looks like it's just three integer exports squished together in a single row, but I can't find a single thing in the export docs about putting multiple exports on a single row like this. The closest is exporting under a category, but that still puts every export on a seperate row. Is it even possible?
Alternatively, is it possible to change the name of XYZ to something else?
