Anyways the goal is to have more health than the opponent. But even comparing it to combat sports plenty of fights go the distance and are still decided by judges based on points. So in FGs case the health is basically the points.

That's what you don't get. Chess is fundamentally different to spectator sports as its rules have been built purely around genuine competition. It is not a spectator sport, it is a real sport. The arbitrary need to declare a victor is a concern of spectator sports not a concern of true sports.

you have to be a world level pro to consistently beat anyone above 1600 mr in this game. brianf thinks hes worse at this game and thats why he drops as low as 1700 mr while it may be partially true, i think the biggest factor is that mid level players simply cannot beat scrubs in ranked in this game consistently enough. only the dozen or so pros who are miles and miles beyond any other player can hold 2k mr in the west permanently. any mid level player might touch 2k mr but they will swing wildly because random 1700 shitters will drive rush at them and wake up parry.

last season sfv was the closest. after the new management took over sfv, there was a very gradual increase in the power level of crmk over several patches. technically karin had crazy damage on a crmk confirm way back in season 2, but capcom slowly buffed a bunch of other crmks and ultimately it culimated in luke in season five doing retard damage from his godlike crmk. everything before sfv was more like crmk xx fireball and only on shotos and those games were all so kookily it wasn't really meta relevant anyways.

SF4 ranked matchmaking was faster than in 6 and that game was stuck below 1000 players on steam at all times when it was current. At 1500 SFV I never ran out of players unless I played at schizo hours like 4am.
It also really doesnt help when its mostly just japs mashing.

At some point you have to admit that you only use the player number bludgeon to make the game look better than it is, because its really just the only metric that doesnt make it look ass.
Doesnt matter if the game has 5000 or 50000 people online. It sucks.

It depends. 2/3S(chun not withstanding)/4 that was generally not the case. They COULD sometimes start a combo off a low but it was generally an unsafe cancel. Knowing when you could use these and get away with it vs when you should use a safe buffer with lower reward was a huge part of good gameplay.
In SFV you could do it but it was a genuinely difficult hitconfirm.

The incentive is MR and yes. There are like 80,000 people above 1500mr just this season which is unthinkable for a fighting game. The claim that SF6 is going to die any day now because there's no shiny SUPER MASTER rank for key jangle retards is fucking laughable. Basically UMA wasn't some complete rando shitter like how crabbas say, but he also wasn't some hidden god like Arslan Ash which is how sixers try to sell him.

He was a very good player (I think he said he grinded 10 hours a day) with solid regional results, but never performed well a majors or in previous SFs. He got extremely lucky with how the tournament played out, but he also beat two really strong players.

With capcup, Uma was expected to make top 8 winners side given who he played. Look who won the the Evos, Angry Bird, Mena, and Punk, all players with multiple major wins and high consistency. That's cause Evo requires the players to beat like 6/7 top players in a row.

Point based Capcom Cup was best, it does have a minor flaw by favouring sponsored/wealthy players who can afford to go to many tournaments.
How to solve this?
Do the World Warrior events and sponsor the winners of these regions to go to all the different Capcom Cup events to earn points.

The best solution is a offline leaderboard like before + qualifiers from a world tournament.

The world tournament would be made up of the online WW winners, then you could have top 4-8 from that tournament make it into Capcom cup proper, and make them the bottom seeds.

It solves everything, there's a proper tour, it's well seeded, and godlike players that can't travel can still qualify.

TWT format is better, but still flawed. The regional qualifiers are just filler that wastes a day because they are just going into losers anyways. Plus the LCQ winners get screwed since they go directly into losers as well.

If you are put into losers before top 8 it's essentially a death sentence. It's extremely rare for those players to go on and win the tournament.

You can literally just have a mix of them both. Hell, make capcom cup bigger if you have to and straight up include more spots if you need to. There's arguably more competitors who make sense being there than there are slots at this point anyway.

Ideally they'd do 4 and a half characters, something like Li Fen or Bosch being a Luke/Chun clone-ish character to pad out the releases, while adding a bit of SF6 flavor to the game

You can play just about any fighter and still find matches easily considering the fact MOST fighters are 1 on 1.

It all starts to make sense when you realise that because SF5 started out as such a dogshit game, the only way to go was up, and in addition the only people who didn't leave and abandon it were the true shit eaters, so of course they only had good things to say about it because it would have been hard to fuck it up further

Meanwhile in SF6 because it has an actual playerbase who didn't just abandon it year 1, you get a good variety of opinions and actual discussion about the game

In 20 years there will probably be no Jive but people are still playing SF2 and SF3 today.

there's no financial incentive for me personally, but there is for people ("influencers") who decide what the rest of the "community" plays, and they are either in it because the tournament scene is artifiically propped up by monster hunter world money, or because they can't criticize the game out of fear of repercussions

Season 5 jive is easily the best SF at high level

2: pure kusoge, even if you banned Vega there's still horseshit unblockables, random stun, constant slowdowns, and vortexes

Alphas: 2 has custom combo and and 3 has v-ism, the two most kusoge mechanics in SF history. I've never seen people play alpha 1 in tournament, Clayton says it's better than 2 so maybe.

3s: Dominated by two characters at top level, both which are fine with stalling to build meter and in general playing like degenerates. Yun Sa3 is insanely retarded.

4: Vortexes, DP fadc, retarded characters. Compare a 4 match to 5, whiff punishes are much less common, hit confirms are much less common. What is more common are the players doing mickey setups and neutral skips. Yun and Elena both are top tier degenerate characters.

6: DR is retarded both in neutral and from buttons, throw loops, PP, extreme homogenization, damage is too high, gameplan is button DR into corner rape.

Jive: Peak SF, huge emphasis on hit confirming and ground game, varied cast, but nothing game breaking, no vortex, no throw loops, just clean oki and heavy neutral play. Hated by the community, which should tell you everything
