The game feels slower than rivals 1 and floatier which I believe is making me struggle to enjoy rivals 2. I loved rivals 1 speed and artstyle but so far my old main (orcane) feels so much clunkier than rivals 1 and clarien also feels clunkier. I am a bad player, but any tips to enjoy the game more? It's called a lower priority bandwidth policy plan. Basically what happened is that Team Aether downgraded their cloud service plan after the first month of launch. They wanted to give the impression of flawless lagless networking for the first month only, then leave you holding the bag with shitty servers. RoA1 pre-rollback was genuinely better than what we have now because it was P2P, which meant infinite service life, never relying on their shitty servers, and lower ping overall. They only use the rollback networking excuse so they can prevent pirates from playing the game. It's an extremely scummy and greedy move on the part of Team Aether, because it ultimately means an extreme degredation of service for their customers.

Also it's worth noting that rollback netcode can be done easily without the need for cloud servers. On Slippi, the servers are only used for matchmaking. During gameplay, the connection is entirely P2P. This means that Team Aether is 100% knowingly giving you a shitty laggy online experience purely out of greed.

I have seen so many complaints about the laggy servers and they havent responded even once. people are complaining about stuttering and lag everywhere I look. Seconding this. There is literally no lag whatsoever when I play the first game. In Rivals 2 however, every game lags. I've lost so many sets to rollback that I stopped playing ranked altogether. I'd play something more fun like teams, except with 4 players there's more lag than ever before, it's literally unplayable on every game mode. It wasn't like this before.
I wonder if they're going to buy the expensive bandwidth plan again when Etalus releases, so everyone thinks they "fixed" the servers only for a few weeks whilst more and more people drop the game forever.

Damn that sucks, I'm sorry man. I haven't played the game since November so I don't know what it's like now, but even back then I remember it wasn't great. Slippi felt so much smoother because it's always on 2f rollback, whereas Rivals 2 tends to fluctuate mid-game anywhere from 3-10 frames of rollback. Add that to the 6 frame buffer and the game is basically an Ultimate-tier lagfest.
On an unrelated note, I'm really happy that Melee has no annoying buffer and that people can't spam moves. It's a lot more impressive and fun when the game requires skilled players to pilot the characters correctly. Even if you're getting combo'd into oblivion you're like "damn they're good." The game truly is a marvel.

yeah its unfortunate because nothing works i reset my computer and router and i have ethern net wired connection. i even bought a brand new computer and gpu for this game even tho my old one plays rivals 1 without a problem. i was so excited to play the game and now its here and its just crap idk what to do anymore

I just played a ranked set against a fleet that took like 17 minutes which took as long as it did because he spent the entire game in the corner under a platform playing for whiffs or other gimmick shit. It was the most boring set of rivals of aether 2 ever played. Fleet was a mistake.

Sorry Meleefaggot, I know you don't know what zoners are because Melee only has "cool" characters, so I'll break it down in terms you can understand.
When a hitbox is so big it fills the entire screen, that is called "zoning."
When there are multiple of these moves on one character, it is called a "zoner."
When there are multiple characters like this in one game, it is called "good."

The random lag spikes on even servers where I have good ping are really souring my interest in the game.
From many of the posts in this thread it seems we’re all experiencing it. Playing with a solid 10 ping, then all the sudden the game turns to a slide show with a ton of rollback at a crucial moment and costs you a stock. What is the deal with these fucking servers?

NTA but I work in IT and that sounds exactly like what happened. There are multiple purchasable tiers for cloud networking, the cheaper tiers are intended for "business class" traffic only, aka not performance oriented. If the studio is bleeding money and players like what seems to be happening, then it makes sense that they would try to reduce costs, cloud server bandwidth is expensive as hell.

While it works against retards, Clairen gets a full punish from simply shorthopping the grounded variant, and can dash back fstrong the aerial variant.
>edgeguarding
You know what Ranno loves? Characters that can literally teleport to the wall, wall tech any edgeguard attempt, and then shit out a screen-wide disjoint to reversal any edgeguard attempt.

As far as I can tell, the only aspect of Ranno's kit that actually consistently works against a passive / reactive Clairen is tech chasing. I'd genuinely love to actually see the data of which moves kill which characters most frequently, because I guarantee that there'd be massive spike for Ranno dstrong killing Clairen.

Nah. Approaching will be stronger because right now walling with aerials and attacks is impossible to whiff punish. It will still be basically impossible to do overshoot or fullscreen approaching aerials because the stages are so fucking massive in combination with the characters being so slow, but it's still a step in the right direction.

For one, it's not that profitable overall especially with what is already planned, promised and in the works, for two that is extra work that amounts to a for free product since no characters to come are gonna be costing any money, for 3 the actual options for what indie games are actually popular and will actually keep people playing a genre they don't 100% enjoy with no sort of solo modes, extra content or as is fully active servers, is again not very profitable in both the short and long term.

There are more reasons that could be listed but the decision to suddenly turn rivals into an everyone game isn't really all that worthwhile, it's the very reason workshop existed since Dan knew people would want more stuff but that he likely had no real interest in doing tons of other random indie characters. All of this also ignores the fact that there would need to be compromise to each indie game involved as well as a possible royalty; the effort to give isn't realistically rewarding or that good for Aetherstudios

you are describing discord fighter after discord fighter here, nasb's 9k wasn't just melee players, it was also a multitude of casuals who played because it was nick related and wasn't a slop game but it died off fast because the thing was just incomplete over all and didn't have much of a retention cycle, nsamb2 did even worse despite actually fixing most of the issues with the first one.

If you look at the chart, the long term of both a year down to a month can show you just how bad it went not long after release as it stopped going up and just stayed down because those melee players went right back to melee not long after the first month's release.

I'm not gonna fix what isn't a problem, as said if I actually want to talk other places exist, this is the minority of the group, I loose nothing letting this ship sink as that is for the best. I'm going to be real. I had way more fun playing NASB 2 than this game. NASB was not a bad game, nobody bought it because of NASB 1's sins, thus the online died quickly.

God melees neutral is so fucking good. How did they do it, anons? It was made 20 years ago and it wasn't for modern day compfags but its so perfect. How did they manage to get literally everything right? It's like some dev from the year 2050 came back to 2000 to create this game. There is no other explanation for this game turning out the way it did. The ONLY Thing this game gets wrong is only making like 14 characters tournament viable. That's it. Maybe the 2050 dev just didnt like those characters. Many have tried to emulate the genius that is melees design and they have all failed. Many have tried to do their own thing but better, and they all failed. The only game that even comes close is pm, which is only a brawl mod. No real game has EVER come close. This game is genuinely a masterpiece. I am in awe at how good this game really is, it's here right in front of me and I still can't believe it. This goes beyond striking gold, This is... otherworldly... I can't put it into words, this game is just.... it...

The more I think about it, the more I seem to arrive at the conclusion that Melee was a gift from the future. Perhaps the coders and designers were agents sent back in time to give us Melee. Perhaps the coders and designers were unknowingly provided Divine Vision to See the gift from the future. I don't know how it happened, but Melee was not of its time period. It is an Out of Place Artifact. There have been several attempts to replicate Melee's greatness, and no game has ever been successful. Melee is simply too good to have been an accident, which is the current story, and instead it must be some sort of Divine Intervention or gift from the future for us to have received it in 2001. Melee is actually the endgame of platform fighters, literally from the year 20XX. It is the Apex platform fighter that is eventually created, but it was sent back in time in a sort of time-loop, because without Melee being made in 2001, we couldn't have the eventual Melee (Apex of all platform fighters) made in the future, in year 20XX.

I just wanna say that initially when this game came out the netcode/connection was just fine. For like a month or maybe longer I can't seem to find a good connection at all. I'll play like maybe 7 games online and maybe one of those is decent. The others feel like I'm stuck in movement and getting jammed up in my inputs.
I'm hardwired in Have 200 up and 50 down Drivers are up to date
Nothing about the home setup has changed since the launch of this game
I'm in MI and I have connection limited to those in Chicago (which is closest to me)
Coming from ultimate I was really looking forward to the online experience
Is this an issue for a lot of people?

I think what's particularly frustrating about the deteriorating online is that the devs kind of just haven't even acknowledged that anything is going on. It would be nice to know that they're hearing us and trying to work with their server hosts to figure out what's going on. The most we got from them was after the Azure patch but things were going wrong well before then and continued to get worse after.

Dude, same. Even with good ping, im almost guaranteed rollback frames once a match. The closest server to me for some reason gives me the worst ping. Im a scrub and dont mind getting steamrolled on but it can be really disheartening to have to leave casual matches from high ping and feeling like I cant perform to my best ability at the least. Going from practicing in the offline modes to having to deal with random rollback makes me super unsure if I’m punished for a bad choice or punished for some kind of lag.

The numbers for active players have been going down pretty steadily since release. I know it’s early but I am admittedly worried this game won’t take off like many of us thought it would. Top players and mid/low level players are starting to get sick of the game flow. Theres constantly less than 50 people watching ROA2 on twitch. I want to see this game succeed more than I can say but even though it’s still pretty new I’m not sure if it will grow the way I expected, or even last much longer at all. But I’m curious to hear everyone else’s thoughts

I play fighting games with my friends at least once a month. Rivals 1 was very popular with our group years ago, (i have over 800 hours logged in it just from starting it up) but rivals 2 went down like a fart in church. my group has played it about 8 times since we got the game, but everyone is upset for 3 reasons.

1. Your momentum is much more strict than rivals 1/melee. (almost as bad as smash ultimate cuz you do have some feelings of being glued to platforms or hardcoded combos)

2. The cutdown roster is fucking pathetic. Its missing a lot of characters that were in OG rivals even before workshop. Absa and Sylvanos' absence is fucking retarded and the team should have prioritized porting every character forward.

3. The more "wacky" or arcadey things are gone. The new CSS music is fucking awful, basically its a basic drum beat. rivals 1 had two badass CSS musics, one of which i listen to at the gym unironically. The music on the stages sucks too. I ripped the songs from the unity files and they sound like shit. Its amazing how much the soul has been sucked out, it sounds like generic slop from the bad crash bandicoot games. More of the fun stages from rivals 1, like the lovers of aether stage/the tutorial grid, should make a return and have good music. Right now the stages are shit, and we basically mute the music now and play other things in the background, something we never did for rivals 1.

The 2 new characters, fleet and the republican elephant guy, aren't fun to play. Lowkey my group wouldve been more satisfied with a OG Melee 2.0, where they just did more characters, added little effects, and did more official workshop packs. We wouldnt even care if they charged an upcharge of like 10-15 bucks for it. But rivals 2 needed hella more work before release. It needs more love/DNA from its past.

Since the game has release I’ve been noticing more rollback happening during matches. I took a break from the game over the holidays and now I’m hitting 100-200ms during games. My selected regions cap out at 40ms. Pretty much makes the game unplayable when my opponent is teleporting everywhere lol
Has anyone else been experiencing this? Or have a fix?

I backed this game on kickstarter. Really disappointed in the server performance. When the game first dropped it was a spectacular experience and I really enjoyed myself. Now I can't even play with a friend on the same server without lagging/rolling back mega balls. (Funnily enough, he doesn't lag on the same server)
Makes the game unplayable.

This is where you got it wrong. That post from /h/ talking about Hmofafag is directed at him, it's not about Botfag. Botfag is another spammer requester (they both share alot of traits in how they act) who goes as for back as 2019 at least, and while Botfag also spams many boards, they are currently putting alot of their focus on the /vt/ drawthread, so other drawthreads aren't getting as much "attention".
Hmofafag spams mostly human male and female anthro requests and does not consider himself a furry and hates fur on fur with a passion.

Can someone technical please explain why these servers suck so much? What does the ping with the 45* mean verses a ping with 50 and no *? my internet is hardlined with 900mbps up and 50 down. I cannot for the life of me understand why they are so consistently bad. Is it other players? Do we both suffer if their game is lagging? Does their game on wifi matter? I have had matches that start great, 40-50ping (2,3) delay. That will then spike when the other play gets a hit (3,5). Often it's mid match and I'm winning, then I can't get a hit in the rest of the game and lose because of it. Why is that? It becomes a mash fest and DI doesn't work so it's just sloppy ass whiff punishes.

People underestimate how good parry is at the rank most people are playing at, especially against "zoners". Every time a Fleet or Zetterburn player is zoning you out by spamming projectiles, they're just giving you free i-frames. Every projectiles with the exception of Ranno's is slow, with a big, lingering hitbox. It doesn't matter what you do before or after, just hit the parry and enjoy your free 2 seconds of invisibility.
It's probably worse in diamond and masters where people actually have really good punish games.

Makes perfect sense to me. The people who obsess over player counts are obnoxious no matter what game it is. Any game that peaks at release, dips, and then quickly recovers with nothing happening (new character, new DLC or expansion, etc.) is a freakish anomaly. Dipping is the name of the game.

It's doubly meaningless because Rivals 1 exists, and was much less popular than Rivals 2, yet is limped along for years until it became relatively popular in its niche.

i have only had a handful of truly fucked-up experiences with the online in ~80 hours, and it's always the same thing: my ping starts spiking like crazy out of nowhere and won't go down. it's like someone hit a lag switch or something. that's happened three times. other than that, it's just the usual 1-4f of rollback, which is fine. 4f is where i start noticing rollback, but it doesn't impact my play. 5f of rollback is where the anomalies start manifesting and it gets annoying, but i haven't had it happen since i opted out of the toronto server.

I keep having this issue where the game gets the ping wrong to certain servers. Like im from the PNW but it keeps claiming that my ping to the Sao Paulo Brazil server is better than my ping to the Seattle one, which is not true at all when the match actually starts and I get horrible ping. Its not easy to get around, because it keeps resetting the servers when I start the game.

This is where I'm absolutely convinced this is a server issue and not a me issue. I've seen the game roll back as my opponent is bread-and-buttering me to death which actually results in me getting saved when it rolls back to before the combo began. It's hard to think my client is actually ahead of what's on the server if I'm actively getting accurately comboed by the opponent and both of our pings are in the low 20s and no spikes. This wasn't as common right after the 1.03 patch but then started getting consistent a few weeks ago and a lot of other people are seeing it too.

Actually, I did decide to pick up Rivals 2 again because I noticed the new event. I went into training mode to brush up on my skills and thought "Wow this game feels fucking amazing why did I drop it."

Went into netplay, immediately got paired against a mashing maypul. Watching her just throw out random low-risk moves and getting punished for trying to punish the mashing, where I just had to basically stay back and poke her massive constantly active hitboxes. It was such an unfun fight I literally quit mid-match. No wonder the person impersonating me finds melee preferable.

it's not even the input delay / lag that kills it, although it's definitely a significant factor. the game is simply designed to have a low skill ceiling and skill expression, despite making concessions to make the game "feel" superficially faster. it's anti-competitive by design. the irony being that this design philosophy directly resulted in the game's extremely degenerate meta - where safe aerials, safe / good OoS, and having some sort of projectile are everything, and 90% of the cast is essentially irrelevant.

pretty fun party game with friends, though.
