And with that I think I'm done with Hakuoki. I did every single route in the first game and 6/13 routes in the second. I just didn't find many of the characters or style of writing that interesting to power through another 20 hours of terrible pacing and uneventful routes. I still had a lot of fun with the game but I would honestly only recommend doing the routes of characters you found interesting at first glance. Much of the game is pretty uneventful since it follows historical events so close for the most part that it doesn't allow much room for character arcs to veer off into something unique. You quickly notice that the game becomes a very basic flowchart of x historical event with x character depending on your route. The sequel broke some of that up but it suffered from having a bunch of terribly placed disjointed 3 hour routes for every character. This game really suffered from having 13 different routes but hey maybe some people like that kind of stuff.

The game had no "true" route really so it's hard to give a simple answer. Everybody "survives" in their good end routes. The caveat behind that is because Hakuoki plays heavily on super natural elements for a lot of its plot drama. There's a potion called the water of life which they drink which gives them supernatrual abilities in combat in exchange for their sanity and overall life span, typical chuuni powers. So basically everybody is destined to die if they drink the potion. It varies from route to route who drinks it but it's most of all the captains use it at some point or another, and it even gets messier because sometimes they do it in other routes and sometimes not which makes the disjointed routes not very fun to read. But anyway back to Hijikata, he drinks the potion in his route and despite surviving Ezo and being the last surviving member of the shinsengumi the "good" end leaves his fate up into the air. He and Chiziru are living alone in a happy ending but they both know that Hijikata can die at any moment. What makes it even dumber is that for some reason Saito was in a similar situation by the end of his route but he was given a convenient plot excuse of finding a magical onsen that can reverse the effects of the potion but Hijikata didn't get that in his. Just another reason why I found the routes dumb. >Is chizuru the one he gives the photo to? No, unfortunately there's no kino moment like that. Ezo overall is kind of brushed over very quickly. The entire chapter is maybe like 30 minutes long that doesn't even really go into much detail. Other routes where Chizuru is separated from the shinsengumi has hear learning much more about Ezo with it even giving you a day by day breakdown of how the invasion went. I feel that Hakuoki could have greatly benefited greatly from a unified true end kinetic route. Hijikata's was the closest we got.
