I see limited value in training very hard puzzles that take 15+ minutes to solve. I tried that once and made no improvements over the course of four months. I went back to easier puzzles I should be able to get in 5 minutes mostly. That helped more. If i compare the tactics i actually find in games vs the ones i solve in puzzles, the complexity gap between the too should be so massive. So very slow increase in puzzle difficulty is the plan.

Taking that long is bad if you can't think of a single idea that might work, but if you can already "sort of see something" and you just need to calculate things precisely then these hard puzzles can be a great training tool for visualizing patterns several moves in advance

the danish is comfy as shit bros. Unless you play into it black is always pretty much just worse. You only need to memorize one long line if your opponent decides to be cute. Every move is really intuitive and 9/10 times your opponent will straight up crumble under the pressure.
It's just brute force calculation.
Any other sharp gambits that heavily railroad your opponent into playing them if they want to keep their advantage that don't require a lot of theory?

That's exactly what I do. I give myself 10 minutes and try to see the idea (this helps with time management) I find "something," and then I see if it works by calculating the possibilities. I mean, I like doing puzzles, but yeah, they are getting harder now.

I tried to play with a novelty set like this once. It's surprisingly hard to calculate when the piece type isn't plainly obvious from all angles. Towards the middle game I stopped looking at the board and tried to do all calculations in my mind.

This doesn't sound like something that actually happens
Maybe adults who do a bunch of tactics, get a high provisional rating (like 2200 tops) and then decide that their 'true strength' is 2500, but of course they won't play and prove it because of cheaters etc.

It's possible for midwits to do well in academic or "intellectual" careers purely on the back of studying, the reason that doesn't translate to chess is because chess is both a science and an art and there's too much room for intuition. You can convince the world you're not a midwit through career and education but not through chess, if you actually are one. Stepjan's main problem has always been that no matter how much he studies theory, once he's actually over the board he just doesn't have that extra something to see good moves on his own, and starts making random "reasonable" moves.

I generally agree with this but it depends on who composed it and what kind of thought went in to it. If you play the chess com daily you're going to run in to a lot of feel good garbage composed by their resident hack. He loves creating problems where, with best play, you win material and a clear advantage. Instead he sets it up so it's just mate in 3. I used to play the daily every day there. The hack composer stole my time on too many problems, calculating long lines and checking for complications only for the puzzle to just roll over and die when I actually put moves on the board.

I complained about this several times in their comments section. An army of apologists always converged to explain that actually composing like this is acceptable, is not lazy, my time is not being wasted because calculating all that stuff was good educational exercise, and that com daily puzzles are truly peak quality at all times.

See here this is a good composed puzzle for advanced beginners and low intermediates. It's 1300 tempo (around 1800 lipuzzle or so), nothing wild. Satisfying. You solve it in a minute or two and you think "that was slick".

It was said in the context of adult improvers and even then I think most gms are above average intelligence, not super geniuses like popculture portraits them but fairly smart, for example magnus seems like the ultimate normie but he has a godlike memory and seemingly very good business sense, Fabi comes across as very rational and objective if you listen to his podcast
I wonder why you picked those names specifically though Giri acts like a clown and we know very little of keymer outside of chess

I've played both. The Schliemann is more tactical, but a little less sound than the Open Spanish. If you like crazy positions, go for the Schliemann. Also another reason to go for the Schliemann is to avoid the Exchange, Anderssen, Wormald, etc, so in that regard the Schliemann is more forcing.

As far as gambits go, it's a fairly respectable gambit. Stockfish gives equality for black in the mainlines. A lot of lines lead to forced draws too, which might be why it's avoided at the top.

I was 1300 liblitz no rapid rating at the start of those 9 months and I had played chess on and off(mostly off) for a couple years very casually,when I say casually I mean never analyzed a game,never learned any opening, never even watched anything educational about chess,did puzzles rarely and in pure guess mode, just played blitz on my phone when I wanted to kill some time
I got serious about improving after he started writing blogs so I think it's a fair comparison

If you start playing at a young enough age, chess sort of compartmentalizes itself in your brain in the same way a language does. That's why why kids - regardless of their intelligence - are able to pick up and become fluent in a language through natural exposure.

Chirila is a very strange case for me in this regard. To me he presents as a standard dude, kind of dude I might work with or attended some elective in college with. Not particularly smart or notably stupid. Social. Attractive. Line of girlfriends over the years. Then I try to parse this with the fact that Cristian is a GM. A weak one but that's still a fuck hard title to get. Standard dudes don't make GM. His closest peer is probably Aman Hambleton and, at least to me, Aman has more of the subtle quirks I expect of GMs. Aman is a little nutty if you dig past the presentable exterior. Even further to the point, Chirila somehow stumbled in to a position as second for one of the strongest GMs of this generation. How did he even get that job?

It's like this guy just succeeds over and over by accident and lucky circumstance.

For every kid that became a GM, there are millions who didn't, so to say "just start young" is BS. A guy at my club started playing chess at 4 years old and his rating topped out at 2100 FIDE. His parents wanted him to become a champion, but he couldn't even get a CM title. He had coaches, trainers and all sorts of other resources. According to people like you, he should be world champ, right? It's just as easy as starting as a kid..

What the FUCK is up with this shit? Everybody I checked had rapid ratings multiple hundreds lower than mine, like at least 400 lower yet they were BTFO'ing me even in positions I know well (compared to them anyway) I played the Ruy four times and every time a different opponent put their knight on d4 once I put the bishop out. Is it cheating? Or super autism? Explain this shit.

You gotta practise to get better at blitz. Blitz is less about calculating full lines and more about making intuitive moves. You do obviously have to calculate a little bit, but you can't sit there and calculate for almost every turn like you can with rapid. As a general rule: if someone has a better faster time control than their slow time control ratings, they're probably not cheating as it's a little bit more difficult to cheat at bullet, for example, than it is to cheat at rapid. This is the opposite of what you see with people like lordbentham who has a bad blitz rating, but a good rapid rating.

It's checkmate in 2 but 50 moves were played without a capture or a pawn move meaning its a draw by "the 50 move rule". With even one more move, hikaru would have captured the rook, resetting the 50 moves, and its mate on the next move. But it's automatically a draw instead, even though the opponent is being checkmated on the board

It’s not a controversial rule. The longest endgame to win is knight and bishop vs king which I think can be done in 40 moves or so.
Bishop and rook vs rook is an objective draw, the player just got in trouble in the end

Day two of playing superblitz because I love being tilted and it's won by a new account with under 900 blitz rating. A great addition to the guy who won yesterday who had 2000 bullet rating, 1200 blitz, and 900 rapid. I'm convinced blitz isn't even chess at this point, it's just watching some youtube video and memorising it and playing it as quick as you can because there's no way you can be literal beginner tier at rapid yet 2000 bullet or 1300 blitz, even if it is lichess.

Fide rules say:

9.3 The game is drawn, upon a correct claim by a player having the move, if:

Meaning that you could claim draw at any point during the game where the preceding 50 moves satisfy the rule even if it's been more than 50 moves without capture or pawn move, but once there is a pawn move or capture, the counter gets reset and you can't claim draw anymore.
It's not like illegal moves where the position can get reset to the state before the move because not claiming a 50 move draw (or a threefold repetition) isn't illegal.

What do you think about Stoyko exercises?

Alice lost. :( She tried to go for a perpetual that didn't work. It went off the rails right here where b3 was the only move to hold a draw. Very hard to find with seconds on clock, letting white queen but then b2 anyway because white has no useful checks with either queen. Black promotes a second, white trades for it and it's even with black having an outside passer on the a file.

The wisdom of it would be more questionable if there were any detrimental outcomes to this whatsoever for him. Will he lose invites to future tournaments? Nope, his presence is money for organizers. Will he face further sanctions from FIDE? Nope, he's well within the rules to pull out of tournaments for any reason. Will this damage his reputation in some nebulous way? I don't think so.

I'm lazy and have terrible attention span, I have to force myself to read a couple pages a day and as soon as I stop for a few days I can never bring myself to start again, I most have done it with a dozen books
Most recently(this summer) I've tried Silman's Complete Endgame Course up to the class C Part and the first 6 chapters of Chess Strategy for Club Players, I can't say I remember much of either
I'm 2000.rapid and 1800.blitz but I get carried hard by tactics, I feel my strategy and endgames are low 4digits level

How did you work with it? Yesterday I played through the first three games but outside of the mating patterns in game 1 and 3 and the idea of weak color complexes I wasn't able to remember much. I was able to win a game based on the latter afterwards though which was nice. Comparing my moves with the masters' multi-purpose and more precise ones was the most enlightening aspect to me when playing through the games.
