Finally finished the Kolosten chapter, and it left a mixed impression.
The story was great. I liked how everyone finally came together to kick Otto's ass, everyone was at their peak performance, Durandal being Kiana's sister legitimately surprised me, and the final boss fight was really cool. The only things I didn't like were Sushang (has to be the most pointless character in the entire game), Mei helping Kiana through a magic Zoom call, and Kallen getting saved anyway. Overall, a solid story. Otto's 15-minute-long walk to the tree would've made Kojima proud.
The gameplay was ass though. It felt like the developers looked at Genshin's huge success, went "hey, we can do cool stuff too!", and birthed the most boring fucking thing in the entire game. The sidequests are as numerous as they are braindead, the visuals look like a cheap PS2 game, the leveling system feels dumb and pointless until the last third, the enemies are weirdly tanky (making the sidequests even more of a chore) and the movement is complete jank (especially compared to the similar APHO, which plays smooth as butter). Thankfully, from what I've played so far, Elysium Everlasting felt like a big improvement.

Unfortunately for new bros almost all of Sushang's characterization was in an event with Susannah. While I actually like her a lot just bringing in a vn character with no foreshadowing was a stupid move.

I don't hate her, her "edgequeen with a good heart" persona in the Elysian Realm is pretty fun, especially when she interacts with people like Elysia, Felis, or Griseo who refuse to play along with her edginess. Her horns being a euphemism for her boobs also made me chuckle. I just find it fucking funny how Mihoyo dealt with her in that chapter

Dang, the whole Elysian Realm storyline was really good. Almost all of the characters were interesting (except Kaplas, he was kinda dumb), the drama was solid (especially everything to do with Pardofelis), and the gameplay was very fun, both the Realm (it's fun to see the first iteration of what became a staple in all Mihoyo games since) and Elysium, which was a huge improvement over Kolosten. I also loved seeing how Elysia slowly wore down Mei's edgetard persona and made her act like a human again. Although now Elysia feels like the real key person in Mei's story, and not Kiana, whose relationship with Mei was never shown in such detail and intimacy (the St. Freya chapters were all kinda barebones in that regard, except the Nagazora breakup). Kiana now has to become the next Elysia for it all to make sense.
The only two major setbacks were Miyuki Sawahiro popping out of existence at the worst time possible (although it made me check out the Chinese VO, which was neat), and the the translation being absolutely godawful. It was clearly translated by multiple lazy tards who didn't even bother communicating with each other, so there are issues like a thing being called different names in different places for no reason, typos in every other sentence, etc. Reading some of it was rough. I really expected things to get much better at this point (after all, other Hoyo games are translated perfectly fine), but no, it's just as shitty as it was in 2016.
But overall, an incredibly solid effort. At first I wasn't sure about the entire story taking such a huge, long swerve, but it was worth it.

Worth noting that the gameplay was based off a series of event modes that they had ran a couple times the year prior. The tower events were popular enough that they ended up being built off of to make the ER. I still wish we got the tower version of roza instead of delta's ER kit though. The spin was fun.

I understand that, I'm just saying how it feels. Kiana's and Mei's relationship was never all that deep. They were bffs straight away - Mei acted like a housewife and Kiana groped her tits in some early comics. Everything else was told in short flashbacks. We never saw them develop alongside each other because they started off developed, and then moved to angst (which ended up being a shitty idea the writers completely abandoned). Elysia's relationship with Mei is more complex, because there's far more of it.

There were a series of what were basically proto ER events where you went up a series of floors collecting buffs that improved older valks. These proved popular enough that they reran them a few times before finally turning them into a permanent mode in the form of the ER. Most of the early ER compatible suits were based off their tower version, although not all of them made it over as is(delta/roza being perhaps the biggest change since the tower version was based off the base S rank roza while the ER was based off delta's augment kit)

It's not about how hard she cried, it's about the buildup to it, or lack thereof. We never saw Kiana and Mei develop together in any significant way before they got separated by Otto. Mei was like a background character early on, even Fu Hua had more screentime in the game and manga. I saw Mei as Kiana's sorta-bland friendwife who mostly existed because someone at Mihoyo had a huge hardon for Saeko Busujima. And no, I didn't bother with GGZ, I have enough to go through as is.
Also, Mei's entire act in LotF was shit writing because it was all but retconned right away, but that's a different discussion.

The whole premise of LotF was that Mei has to "abandon" Kiana to "save" Kiana. The Herrscher of Thunder tells her that she will never see Kiana again, she suddenly starts acting like a renegade, and her only way forward is to ruthlessly chase after every Herrscher so that Kiana won't have to put herself in harm's way and kill herself while saving others like every other Kaslana.
Then, literally a single chapter later, Mei mellows out completely, hearing about Kiana fighting Herrschers doesn't bother her one bit, and she says she knows they'll reunite soon. The entire premise of LotF was blatantly abandoned, which drove me up the wall because I wanted to see some fucking development for Mei, not that shitty flip-flopping. At least the ER gave me some.

I want to rant a bit.
Look I don't mind bringing Kiana back with a new battlesuit even if it's Chinese themed, mainly because she is my favorite character and it's been 2 damn years since her last battlesuit. I do also like the event.
Still everything feels a retcon.
1 year ago we got the anime chapter which gave a "closure" to Kiana with a song asking "Will we ever meet again" and Kiana ending the song saying "We will definitely meet again". It was obvious that Kiana was coming back someday even before this song but still, it hasn't been even 1 year since part 2 started. It feels way too soon.
Another thing is the "cutscenes" instead of the animated shorts. Hear me out, the cutscenes aren't bad, the animations for them are very good but still they lack a lot.
They are mainly made using the game character models(for Vita VS Sparkle and Kiana's cutscenes the textures have been upgraded compared to Sena and Songque) and this can cause visual problems in some frames.
The SFX for the last one was also very lacking. Except for the beginning, in the second half when Kiana plays the drums, we can't hear the drums being hit even though Kiana is strongly hitting them.
Animation wise they are very good, no complains about this.
I don't expect an animated short for an event but I don't feel like the last one was finished at all, mainly because of what I said about the sound effects and some frames showing part of Kiana's face and looking very weird. Are you telling me no one noticed that? Really?
Oh one more thing about the last animation, look at the NPC's. There is 1 type of NPC for 300 characters at least. If you watch it only once there is no problem because it goes so fast that you can't see them but if you re-watch and pause, it feels wrong.
Also for some reason Fu Hua Garuda has become Fu Hua's daily version of herself. I'm pretty sure this is because she doesn't have a "normal" new model and as I said the CGs are made using the character's game 3d models but still.

There are a few reasons to why Honkai impact keeps losing players and mhy doesn't seem to want to fix this.
1- The lack of animated shorts since part 1 ended. Needless to say the animated shorts are a big part of Honkai Impact's identity, they are big enough that a lot of players started the game after watching certain if not all the animation shorts(as a reference I started HI3rd after I saw Shattered Samsara in CN when it came out, I already watched the previous animated shorts but the release of that is what moved me the most and made me hype for the story, in that way I survived the beginning of the game because there was a level cap at that time)
2- The UI(for everything). This is a problem HI3rd has had for the longest time, it's just not player friendly, specially for beginners since once you know what to do then it's okay but for new players it's just too much info. I do think there are ways to make everything more interactive if they make maps with every bridge and for example for the hyperion mhy could add "rooms" with each room being one thing(for example 1 room being full of pictures like Mario 64 and each picture being 1 chapter)but, another room for equipment, etc. This is just one of the ways I thought of and I thing it's still better than make the new players know "this icon does X, that icon does Y"
- The old models are very outdated(characters the most but maps and landscapes too). I understand that mhy doesn't want to rework on them but this is the truth, HI3rd was their first 3d game so it's very normal that mhy has improved a lot a long the way but you can see the difference even between part 1 beginning and part 1 finale characters. And the ones that notice this the most are new players, who see that and lots of them think "this game is not for me"
- The yapping at the beginning of part 2's first 3 chapters. This is very deadly.

- Whatever is going on with the Memokeeper and the strong force she talked about to Kiana.

The trailer goes like this. First scene Acheron at a bar and then we get a flashback of first three minutes of Acheron and Kiana daily life together. Kiana actually calls her Mei senpai. They attend a festival together and camera angle shifts to Kiana's face from Acherons pov and from the lighting of the fireworks and scene immediately switches to a more darker atmosphere where Acheron and Kiana are sitting together. Then their planet gets attacked. Kiana runs off to fight and Acheron screams at her to stop but can't give chase because so much debris and smoke causes her to lose Kiana. Then we see our Acheron travelling across planets getting headaches about remembering Kiana with no face. The side effects of her abilities have dulled her taste senses so when she's sitting at a bar she's approached by a memokeeper who starts distracting Acheron with conversation while trying to peak at her memories. Acheron immediately grabs her wrist and is visibly angry. The memokeeper laughs and tries calm her down and reveals Kiana is alive. Acheron is shocked but then says "then my memory wasn't.. ". Memokeeper tells her Kiana isn't the same anymore and can do something about her memories and senses as they will get worse with time. She gives her the planet name and Acheron decides to journey there and find her.

Maybe this explains why Swan was beat up because this has happened to Acheron before.

I just realized something. In retrospect, the reason why Mei's character development felt so shitty is one chapter in particular - the one with Owl and Ana. And I have a theory on how it happened.
MHY wanted Mei to become an anti-hero who violently pushed Kiana away and needed to find her way back step by step. But the Chinese players must've started shitting on Mei for being a bitch, and the writers got spooked by that reaction (even though it should've been anticipated and welcomed). So they decided to get through Mei's "journey" ASAP, and squeezed it into a single chapter where Mei basically encounters her own mirror in Owl - an overprotective asshat who's ready to "become a sinner" for his Herrscher gf, which only gets both of them killed because Owl was deaf to Ana's wishes and blinded by his saviorfagging, so nothing of value was achieved. Mei looks at the corpses, silently goes "oh shit, he's literally me", and right in the next chapter, becomes Kiana's snarky (but totally trusting and loving) long-distance gf. And that's the shitty part - the story is so rushed, you'll blink and miss Mei's entire "character journey" from LotF to New Atra because it happens in, like, 5 minutes, and everything else instead focuses on Raven and Elysia's gang. All because someone in the writer's room couldn't handle Mei being controversial for 5 minutes.

They didn't get flack at all. The sentiment was either bemused laughter or good riddance. Almost no one used it anyway and it doubles the work they would have to do for in game cutscenes. There is also no way in hell they are going to do two separate animations if those ever come back.

To be entirely honest, this sort of thing was more than likely the reason he was removed to begin with. With the game shitting itself it's an easy cost saving measure to cut him. Not to mention the (futile) attempt to turn troonseeker into an actual character is one much easier done if you only have one character to work with.

I won't believe that unless I see the numbers from MHY themselves. People always say "no one uses the male protagonist" in these games, and yet male protags always end up being the mainstream option, simply because most players are dudes who want to self-insert, while female protags exist in memes only. It's most obvious in Genshin, where Stelle is all but forgotten at this point, even officially.
The real reason has to be cutting costs on voice acting. VAs are expensive, and the dev team didn't even spare the cash for Miyuki Sawashiro to dub the entire Elysium storyline after she came back because they could get away with it, that's how frugal things are. From Dawei's perspective, HI3 is a legacy project like GGZ, they have three far larger games to support.

No one ever uses the MC in endgame Genshin content, he's entirely worthless. Bringing that up as a statistic is like arguing that Billy is totally a viable character in ZZZ because some autist on /vg/ managed to complete the Tower with him for the meme. I don't get why HI3 didn't use 2.0 as an opportunity for a proper overhaul of everything. Remove the decrepit systems (the low-res startup popups alone make the game feel ancient in hard-to-describe ways), simplify the grind, simplify the leveling, update the gacha system, trim the UI, tie the new story tighter to Star Rail for that audience to come over, give newcomers cool old S units for free (they're getting replaced entirely with 2.0 units anyway), optimize the controls, make modern console ports (especially the Switch, this is the one fucking Hoyo game that could handle it), make the 1.0 storyline easier to read by implementing the manga properly instead of sprinkling in old website links out of fucking order, update some of the oldest models and characters. Then relaunch the game, calling it something like Honkai Impact 3rd Reborn, and rake in the cash.
Instead, Part 2 somehow only makes things worse for the newcomers by dumping itself on them from the start while they're still untangling eight years of legacy crap, coded like the finest Italian spaghetti.

Yeah, nah. Even right now, it's still the worst addition to P2 story, it just feel so tacked on.
I can somewhat understand not pushing harder the manga and other supplementary material in the main story harder, most people don't want to start reading a manga when they're in the middle of playing a game, but they should at least clean up the site where they host those. But I feel like they kind of want to remove these manga from the story, but they really can't since it removes too much flesh from the cast if you do.

No way in hell do you replace RM. Replacing FF for a lingsha DPS comp is definitely a thing but for standard teams going TY/RM/LS/DPS is absolutely the way to go unless you are going sustainless.

Like I said, LS DPS is a thing. I consider that a completely different team though, primarily because making your sustain also your DPS allows doubling up on supports that usually only happens with sustainless. It's definitely a good team, it's just a different one entirely.

The point is that putting E0 FF in that team makes it slower in aoe content. All those characters are E0S0 too and my DDD is only S2. I am sure people will catch on in a week or 2. I was planning on getting FFE1 but that now seems like a waste.

Honestly, it's a good scene. My only issue is that, for some fucking reason, Mei is absolutely not allowed to emote. Kiana is laughing, crying, reminiscing, and Mei just... talks, agreeing with Kiana, and giggles sometimes. Turn the waterworks on for once, come on. Cry in Kiana's embrace, shout how much you truly missed her, how much she matters for you, and then she would respond in kind, and then you laugh together. That's how real people would act.
There's stoic, and then there's just wooden.
