Currently running "Halo 1 Mod" in the MCC custom games browser.
Ran for only 30 minutes yesterday and got a full lobby

After discovering you can adjust the scale of objects with scripting, I decided to scale all weapons and items up. Halo CE weapons are large. Don't believe me? Compare the size of an AR to a dead Spartan player model: the AR is half the size of the player!
I went in and individually scaled every weapon.
This is a first pass, not the final weapon scales (I can predict some problems), but scaling the weapons up goes a massive way to making the game feel more like Combat Evolved.
I also scaled the Spartan player model down slightly, which has a wonderful effect on the Anniversary maps. I've always felt Beaver Creek remake was weirdly cramped compared to CE and 2, and scaling the player down makes it feel a lot better to move around in, especially near the back of the bases.

Elites have been enabled if that's your preferred species. They have also been scaled down to match the Spartan player model size.

On top of all of this we have a ton of other changes I've described already
- Walk over Health Packs to pick them up (health packs also now work for Elites)
- AR gets infinite ammo to get it closer to the experience of having 60 rounds
- Plasma Pistol and Shotgun get damage buffs
- players can now pick up and carry 4 of each grenade type (this is different from just spawning into the match with 4 grenades, then only being able to carry 2 of each at a time: you can now carry 8 grenades total)
- As a solution for the Plasma Rifle hitstun problem, I've given players holding a Plasma Rifle a speed boost. In both cases, whether it's CE hitstun or this speed boost, you're able to run circles around your opponent while he struggles to aim at you. That'll be my current solution for that problem
- Plus: many more tweaks and changes to the gametype and player traits to make the game feel like Halo CE

Scaling objects, predictably, causes some problems. Health packs are comically massive, and this seems to be due to them only scaling up when actually playing in multiplayer. They did not scale in local custom games or forge so I couldn't tell if they were getting bigger and kept increasing the scale.
I'll put those back down to normal size.
Grenades are fun, the explosion effects are huge, and they always seem to scale properly when thrown by the player. However sometimes when they respawn they do not properly scale and stay at default size. This is not a major issue to fix, but it's something to put on the list of minor bugs.
Presumably this also happens with weapons when they respawn, but with weapons it's less noticeable visually.
All scaling problems seem to be tied to spawn sequencing, and might be solved by staggering the spawn orders of objects so nothing overlaps.

Most everything else seems alright.
Magnum bloom feels like it might be a bit high compared to CE, but it also feels relatively balanced, so it's something to consider before I tweak anything.
Forged layouts of maps, especially the symmetrical arenas like Countdown and Anchor 9 needs attention.

Had a great time with that. More to come.

I actually like the Bulldog, it reminds me of the Mauler. I'd rather the Heatwave be able to one-shot from its horizontal fire, because that mode is so useless otherwise. Just nerf its fire rate.
They tried to make the Banished guns more unique, but you got

I think people's problem with 5's rockets was that they were so generic-looking. The magnum and shotgun replacements at least looked like sci-fi guns still. 5's rocket was a green tube just like the ones used today.

With Halo 2 they literally just reskinned the AR and Magnum, then doubled the sandbox so the Arbiter campaign would have Covenant versions of all the main weapons.
Oh and they tweaked stuff for Dual Wielding.

None of this fundamentally changes the sandbox.

None of what you've described *fundamentally* changes Halo's weapons, or its sandbox.
Halo was only *fundamentally* changed with Reach, with the addition of sprint and jetpacks which changed the way maps were designed, and with the addition of the loadout system which fundamentally changed the way the game was played.

I think it's mostly an apples to oranges thing. High Charity and the Long Night of Solace supercarrier are 2 completely different ships that serve completely different purposes. The only other time we truly get to see the inside a carrier is in CE and very short cutscenes in 3.

What I noticed this session: Still getting inconsistency with the item scaling for grenades: grenades that have been picked up will respawn at the default size.
Players have discovered the intended trick with the Plasma Rifle. With the speed boost + the Plasma Rifle's shield shredding capability (using only the default 100% damage) you can quickly shred someone's shields and get close enough to finish them with melee. Also saw players use it to shred shields, then switch to Magnum for a headshot: the speed boost having the other intended effect of allowing the player to dodge an opponent's attacks more effectively. Plasma Rifle was always the best weapon in Halo (for a secret reason) but it's got a very interesting niche in the Reach sandbox now.

The players who joined stuck around for a while. I hope I am approaching the sauce that makes Halo CE gameplay addictive, although there is still work to do.
Again, the biggest issue: I wish for more players, to experience what a full 8 man lobby with these settings would be like.

Halo CE gameplay in HD, with the Bungie art direction touch, is something I've wanted since Reach. I spent a lot of time in highschool playing CE and came to really appreciate the sandbox. I think it's very hard to actually improve on CE's foundation, and besides Halo 2, I don't think any Bungie game (or 343i game) has really improved on it.
So actually getting this gametype to work is something of a fulfilment of a long standing wish of mine.

I also feel like, if I can get the game feeling like Halo CE for starters, then I can start really experimenting with the sandbox and getting creative.
Start small, just get this one thing right, then expand from that.

Ironically enough Bungie.net forums did have a pretty significant amount of whining, complaining and dislike for Halo 3 when it came out. People seem to think everybody just loved Halo 3 and were all jizzing to it day one. I know nostalgia can blind people to problems but Halo 3 people literally act like everyone was just jerking each other off for it. I think a lot of people like to rewrite history to fit their nostalgia dream.

Well, after hours of bashing my head against the proverbial wall trying to teach myself the proper syntax, I've come up with something that seems pretty interesting for a Halo CE style sandbox.

- - - Weapon-Specific Armor Abilities. - - -

In my current version of the Halo 1 Mod gametype, I have it set up so whenever a player is holding a Plasma Rifle in the primary slot, they get Evade. Evade is removed if the player switches to another weapon or picks up something else.
I'll be removing the speed boost from the Plasma Rifle: previously, the player got a speed boost while holding the Plasma Rifle in the primary slot as a solution for my as-of-yet not figuring a way to apply a hitstun property to players shot with a Plasma Rifle. The ideas was that, when a player is stunned in CE, it's difficult for them to turn, move, and track the player. The speed boost was meant to accomplish the same effect, but by buffing the Plasma Rifle wielder's speed instead of nerfing their target player.
Evade is a much more interesting function to add to the Plasma Rifle than a mere speed boost, as it makes the user much more unpredictable.

The potential of this script is big.
I could do things like
>Picking up a Sniper Rifle gives you the Active Camo ability or Hologram
>Picking up a Shotgun gives you Hologram or Sprint
>Picking up Overshields gives you Armor Lock
>Picking up Rockets gives you a Jetpack
etc.
(something I'd really like to do is give Hologram to a player who picks up the Active Camo powerup, but this seems difficult to accomplish - compared to the other examples)

In those examples, I'm imagining stuff that would pair well together.
Rocket Launcher and Jetpack would really let you rain down hell on people.
Sniper and Camo makes a lot of sense
Shotgun with Hologram could be used to bait people as you hide behind a corner
Shotgun + Sprint could let you close the gap needed to get a kill

None of these are particularly balanced ideas: but it's fun to think about

Maybe 2 has the superior 4v4 competitive gameplay, but 3 has the best overall gameplay when you include BTB. Not even 2 comes close to 3's BTB, and BTB is the most important mode in Halo because it combines the entire sandbox into one whole experience that is 'Halo'.

3 seems to just have a better baseline. There's less work required to mod it because the base mechanics, art style, physics, etc. are all great and don't require much modification. You can simply just add weapons, vehicles, and maps while leaving the default mechanics intact. Meanwhile Reach would take a lot more work to get it to look and play like 3, when I could just play 3 and add Reach's weapons/vehicles. What Reach has is a better Forge mode and Forge World, so most people are happy just with that and don't really need to mod it since they like Reach's base gameplay.

Models are mostly compatible between both engines, you can drag & drop stuff easily. The only thing that requires some effort is porting animations that don't exist in Reach.
It's annoying that people will stick with an inferior engine for nostalgia clicks.

The models are one thing, but to make Reach look pretty you'd have to basically recolor all the textures. The game was hand-built to look grim and grey. And to recolor it properly you'd have to manually tweak the textures for every model for every environment/skybox and adjust all the lights and contrast, you can't just turn up the saturation and call it a day. And with all that extra color, you'd have to re-tune the visibility of stuff for gameplay purposes.

There aren't that many mechanics I want from Reach so badly that I'd go out of my way to mod Reach to play like 3 when I can just play 3 with modded weapons/vehicles. I don't need loadouts or armor abilities. I don't want Reach's more sluggish/restrictive movement and controls. I don't want Reach's aiming system or lack of dual-wielding. I don't want Reach's art style. I just want Reach's weapons and vehicles. You don't have to change much about Halo 3 to make it fun. You can just add stuff to it. But you have to overhaul Reach to make it fun and pretty. Even if it has more features, most of them I won't even use, and will have to remove/disable a bunch of stuff just to get it to play like 3.

That's nothing new. Halo modders have always been tremendous fags when it came to sharing information. Back in the Custom Edition days, people used a utility to encrypt their tags so that no one else could use them.

A bit ago, posted about figuring out a way to do weapon-specific armor abilities, where a player gets a specific armor ability only with a specific weapon in the primary slot.
Went ahead and attached each Armor Ability to a specific weapon and tested it.
It was great in theory. One of the most exciting things about this system: you can essentially carry two armor abilities at a time, if both weapons you're holding have armor abilities attached, which would open up huge potential for strategic play. I'm imagining trick montages where a player juggles himself in the air swapping back and forth between a weapon with the jetpack ability and the sniper. Or a player using a weapon with hologram attached to it in combo with a shotgun, swapping back and forth between them.

The problem is, if an armor ability is placed on the player every time you use a specific weapon, and say you're swapping weapons, it resets the Armor Ability energy.
So, in other words, a Hologram user can spawn infinite holograms. A Drop Shield user can spawn infinite drop shields. An Armor Lock user can instantly reset Armor Lock to use again, etc.
So the idea is kind of a bust for now, until I can figure out a limiting factor. I might be able to apply a timed trait to a player that disables armor abilites for several seconds immediately after equipping a new armor ability.

Besides this, I've come up with another interesting idea: essentially a weight mechanic.
Currently, players with a Sniper Rifle and/or Rocket Launcher in either the primary or secondary slot get a 75% movement speed debuff, to simulate their character carrying the heavier weapon.
I haven't implemented it yet, but I've got an idea to hit the player with a 50% speed debuff if they're carrying BOTH rockets and sniper.
On top of this, I can place Sprint on the player if he's carrying both a Magnum and a Plasma Pistol: make the player able to sprint with the lightest weapons.

I really like the distinction between the automag and carbine, and having way more hunters and drones makes running around with the noob combo all game less reliable. In Firefight, the Mauler is a great close range weapon... Until Tilt kicks in, that is. It's also great in Floodfight.
The AR is a good weapon in Firefight if you have the additional guns turned on. It's biggest advantage is its massive number of mags it can carry (10+ vs about 4 with the SMG).
Even with the BR turned on, the Automag is THE headshot weapon.

The biggest wet farts in ODST are the Spiker, which isn't particularly powerful compared to the other auto weapons and the Brute Shot which has absurdly low ammo pickup, even without Famine.

Half the reason Halo offends some people even to this day is because you can't kill everything in 0.5 seconds at all times. Their entire concept of an FPS is instant or near-instant kills, and because Halo isn't like that, it makes them upset and think it's a "bad" FPS. I like the halo online maps more than some base/dlc maps for this exact reason. It allows more weapons to be used compared to bigger maps like standoff where two sides are plinking at eachother until someone steamrolls with a scorpion or warthog.

I liked the campaign and that you can play against bots in customs. 343 was also nice enough to let us remove sprint and clamber and even adjust the movement acceleration. It's scuffed and the aiming system still sucks, but you can almost get Infinite to play like classic Halo. Almost. Infinite may be a lot of things but at least it's not Halo 4. (Although Halo 4 has a much better aiming system and snappier controls)

I miss 5's weapon variants. Sure, they were all lazy reskins but they still offered something to play with. Infinite only has 1 lazy reskin per weapon, and most of them function identically to the base weapon.

If you want to argue 4 is uglier that's fine, but I would deposit that 5's visuals are just 4 cranked up to 10. The dynamic resolution is really REALLY bad as well, even on PC. Some textures will literally look ps1-tier at a distance at times.
For what it's worth, the 5 beta looked better. Someone else can go into better detail on it than me, but the lighting and shadows was significantly more advanced than what was in the final game.

Getting into minutia of Halo CE gameplay with my mod.

Decided to use my healthpack system to apply Active Camo and Overshield properties to other objects in the world, that could be affected by physics.
Settled on the Active Camo armor ability and the Armor Lock armor ability objects.
Currently in my gametype, when you touch the Armor Lock item, it deletes itself and 2 layers of overshields are immediately applied to the player (ideally would work out a way to get the overshields to charge instead). I've also used the super-shields script to, instead of creating a flame effect, change the player's armor colour to white - so you get a visual indicator of overshields that can still be used with camo (so camo can be used with overshields and not have yourself given away).

I have also figured out a way to create weapon-specific quick camo.
In Halo CE, certain weapons cause active camo to return to the player quickly, while other weapons have camo that returns slowly.
The way I'm handling active camo as a powerup is to have the player pick up the active camo armor ability. The using the armor ability is disabled, but the script checks if the player has it in his inventory: and if he does, the script checks what weapon the player is holding in their primary slot. Then traits are applied based on the weapon: "good" or "best" camo.

If everything works as planned, a timer will delete the Active Camo armor ability from the player after 50 seconds.

I went back and watched some footage a month or so ago. The constant pinging and alarms from the shield bar and other aspects of the Hud were almost ear-piercing. The prophets bane was also almost blinding for how bright it was.

That's a pretty clever way to handle quick camo, I didn't think to use different camo levels(that could each have their own regrowth rate) and checking what weapon the player had active. I don't know how many custom traits you're allowed to apply to players, but hopefully I can spare an extra one in my own gametypes. It wouldn't be exactly like CE, but that's a really good starting point.

Tried to do this by checking the speed of all weapons and items and applying the effect once if the speed was greater than zero, but this had the comedic effect of only working on weapons in the player's hand, causing the player himself to be pulled upward randomly at sometimes lethal velocity.

Turns out Bungie generally had no problem with Ensemble making a Halo game as their sunsetting project. They didn't even restrict them from using Master Chief in the game. That was a decision that came from Ensemble themselves.

I'm using this in tandem with map mods, so the two camo levels are identical except for their recovery time. Quick camo is something I've wanted to do since the start. Disregard the colors, I was using them to test.
Have you thought to implement momentum-based melees? I'm not sure how they'd behave with lunge, but Megalo does keep track of how fast you're moving.

Have player damage resistance set to 50% and player health set to 150%, plus modifiers on each weapon to reduce damage on a per-weapon basis.
- AR gets 90% damage, which should feel like a small buff
- Shotgun gets 110% damage, which should feel roughly the same as the 125% buff with normal damage settings
- Plasma Rifle gets 100% damage, which should feel like a medium buff
- Needler gets 50% damage which should significantly nerf it (just trying to be true to CE here)
- Rocket Launcher gets 110% damage which should be felt as an increase to the explosion radius (this can be toned down if need be, but CE rocket launcher is powerful)
- Plasma Pistol gets 50% damage (overcharge should work fine, but this should bring it closer to Halo CE's effectiveness. Reach default PP is pretty good)
- Sniper gets 100% damage which should hopefully buff it to be able to make it kill in 2 body shots

The reason to do all this, adjust the damage table to 50% damage resistance and 150% health multiplier, while individually tuning all the weapons, is specifically to buff grenades.
This is a convoluted roundabout way of doing it, but hopefully it will pay off.

It should be noted that, in previous testing, at 50% damage resistance with 75% weapon damage output feels like normal values: just with deadlier explosions.
They seemed too deadly, but I overlooked the health multiplier: setting the health multiplier up a little should hit a sweet spot.

There are no peacekeeping factions in Halo.

There is no reality where this happens because Halo 3 is the way it is directly because of Halo 2 being the way it is. Extremely rushed Development of 2 led to a more laid back development of 3 where some plot threads just fell through the cracks.

Halo 4 should have been about Arby chasing down a bunch of Covenant Remnants, and they jump to a Halo Ring this comes as a shock to Arby as it shouldn't be here. The UNSC overwhelms and attempts to board the Collum of Months. The captain suggests that everyone should evacuate while he does an emergency landing. From here Arby must fight through the covenant remenants, and the sentinel augmented UNSC forces. The UNSC has these new Forerunner weapons that are supposed to be way better in lore, but they fire slow projectiles in game for gameplay reasons, the Elite forces under Arby have hung up Covenant weapons because the Logistics to operate them were too expensive, and have taken up new equipment manufactured that are hitscan in game. Eventually Arby blows up the Halo ring by overcharging the reactor of the Collum of Months and escapes.
Halo 5 should feature a subplot where Master Cheif is woken up by the UNSC and told to go after the leader of some interactionists, but the instructionists have the monitor from the Halo ring Arby just blew up, and he tries to explain to John that humanity is doing bad things, and eventually Master Cheif pushes through his ONI brainwashing, and he and Arby will team up in Halo 6.

Actually I'd say The Covenant are more similar to Jews than Christians. Ostensibly, Judaism and Christianity are pretty similar(disregarding the whole Babylonian Talmud stuff for now) with the one big difference being that the Jews did not accept Jesus Christ as the son of God, and they killed him and his followers for it, which is not very different at all from what the Covenant is doing to Humanity(I don't need to explain this similarity to you).

Hah, I crashed the game with it. Tried variations, and just got stuck on a black screen when the map loaded.
Might have been an obvious mistake, but with the game crashing: hard to tell what went wrong.

I switched instead to script that checks for an object's speed. At values over 0 and 1 I use current_object.push_upward() on an object.
This has been more promising, but funny.

Seems like it should be really obvious, but I haven't figured out how to have something happen only once, and if it has happened, check for whether it's happened, and not have it happen again.
With the first few variations, I would get infinite upward momentum on objects immediately after they spawn, so all the objects not under a roof would fly out of the map. This was funny if you could grab one.
Then I tried turning off the upward push effect if the object speed was greater than 3. This works, you get a pulse of upward momentum as soon as the object starts to quickly slide (pushed from a grenade explosion) which then turns off until the object reaches speed "2" again (whatever speed 2 actually is).
You've probably figured, the effect is re-applied when the object decelerates.

This results in eternally bouncing objects, which is kind of hilarious to watch - could serve as a foundation for a gametype all its own, "popcorn weapons" where players have to chase weapons around the map and grab them out of the air as they bounce around. The effect is also transferred to a player holding a weapon with the effect on it.

So then I tried using a 1 second timer at a rate of -1000% and turning off the effect if the object is at speed 0 or 1. With a few extra steps (including a second timer, in a way that's complicated to describe) this kind of actually works. Except objects that don't come to a stop will bounce unnaturally until they reach speed 1.

All that to say, I have no idea how my script that attached downscaled fusion coils to every frag grenade would have worked. Sorry

I've only been testing this script on objects I give the forge label "weapon"
But I have forge labels for both grenade types, which is necessary for another part of the script (forcing player grenade inventory past the default limit of 2 per type, so players can carry 4 of each grenade).

So the same upward momentum script could easily be applied to grenades, and this would present less of an issue because...
I'm not sure how grenade health is calculated, they explode if they take damage from headshot weapons, but I'm going to try to use the "kill" script on grenades that go flying, after a half-second delay.
What this should result in for the player, what the player will see, is you toss a grenade into a pile of grenades -> the grenades go flying upwards (in a more dramatic way than Reach's usual physics) -> after a half-second they explode ... which should look like Halo CE's chain grenade explosions, ideally
This all hinges on whether or not I can actually trigger a grenade explosion with a script

Decided to just play Halo 5 since I already had it and why not. Why is it that it didn't have that many less games than Infinite customs and why was match making just more fun and vibrant? Infinite should be much better than Halo 5 yet it's hardly better and that's with Halo 5 having a huge handicap.

He might be referring to the body type C spartans. Plus you can use male or female voices for any body. And then there's also the different coatings/flag colors you can pick to represent that community. You can sort of already do that in MCC and even older Halos, but back then they hadn't come up with those colors yet. In 3 you could have a female voice but the body type didn't change so Spartans were pretty uniform in terms of their models. There's definitely more emphasis on identity though, especially since they want you to buy coatings and stuff combined with the current political climate, so you technically do have more options to customize your Spartan even if you do have to pay for them now.

If you wanna hear a funny story, I haven't seriously played XBOX for 10 years. How did I end up back on halo?
I played Destiny for an entire decade and had fun the whole time. Don't hate it one bit. Then a mysterious shooter showed up in my life and then it left. That mysterious game was the most fun I'd had in a decade. It made me realize how much I was just "putting up" with something like Destiny PvP.
I saw my friends in another state and played some Infinite for the first time in 3 years. It felt like that mysterious shooter. I was back at home.
I went home and bought an XBOX the next morning. I've played about 800 games of Infinite since. I'm home.
I have no problem with other games like Destiny or COD Overwatch 2 or even >>507543264
, I can call all of em good games that are balanced, fun, and exciting. I just don't have the taste for them right now. I am on Halo, back home on Halo, all because Mystery Shooter came and went.

The characters were a hard sell and the first impression was cosmically misaligned. Most shooting games are about hammering nails through your cock. Concord had none of that. the ttk and balance and speed was about on par with Infinite, and that's why I play Infinite so much now
