Veil Ranger was my first playthrough and I was genuinely baffled by the complaints about spongey enemies - it was never an issue. Dunno if it's more of a problem on other classes.

I think it's a matter of people using the wrong elements on enemies, or trying to beat quests like the Champion ones too early.
On my mage run if I use elements enemies are effective too, shit gets tedious whereas even if they're a few levels above they still go down pretty fast if I'm using their weakness.
Beating the Tevinter champion was much more a challenge of surviving all the fucking blight and shocking dots he kept dropping on the ground on nightmare, than his HP bar being hige

Ah I did have that issue with enemies that resisted electricity but once I picked up on that I'd try to predict what I'd fight ahead of time and adjust my skills/party/equipment ahead of time. It was actually pretty engaging once I realized how much thought you could put into everything.

In my experience an archer Artificer.
Knight Enchanter isn't as broken as it was at launch but it's still really good. Champion is good if you don't want to die. Some swear by Reaver but I never used it myself. Assassin is very strong but I find it boring after a bit.

Because there is so much interesting stuff to talk about.
You could compare and talk about differences and shifts in the narratives between the games and their similarites and why so much that they tried to dredge up from DAO in later games worked there but doesnt work in Pissquisition or Veilguard.

But it is impossible to do deepdive into anything here because the the Solasfags get upset at you criticizing Inquisition when you explain to them quite objectively why the game is weak and why Solas is despite having so much time spent on him is a worse character than Loghain.

Its frustrating but I still havent given up.

Thedas had so much potential but I think in many ways the WoTs did more harm than good.
And part of it is the original writers being replaced and a classic case of "too many cooks".
Which isnt to say that the original writers where such good writers and whatnot, I think there probably was also skilled Tardwrangler involved who told them what works and what doesnt.
Someone who probably left after DAO which is why the overall quality of the writing took a nosedive or why there was no one skilled enough to properly write a character like Solas and he ended up the way he is.

And what comes to mind is a quote from the greasegoblin in Cisquisition about "being too big for your breeches".
Properly written Solas would have been a great and memorable character.
Instead he ends up annoying and retarded and the only people who love him are fujos, faghags and gays who wouldnt be able to spot good writing even if jizzed all over them.

And I am sure you are weirded out why I keep going back to Solas but Solas is handsdown the best example of that.
The parallels between him and Loghain are just uncanny and to big to ignore.
Difference being that they knew when to peace out with Loghain and the narrative never tries to convince that you he is the master manipulator.

In short, Dragon Age is an unbridled tragedy.

When Flemeth became a fan-favourite and they started to clean-up the narrative about elves.

I am replaying DAO and there is just such a stunning difference in tone between DAO and the rest of DA its uncanny.
One of the best examples being how the treatment of elves is portrayed and how Fereldens treat them (rightfully) like shit.

While in Veilguard black-actionman gives you a rant about human bigotry which we never even see.

Don’t have to remind me. I never really liked Dorian all that much. His story was definitely ham-fisted and I get that Gaider had wanted to write something that was based on his experiences as a gay man. But it was something that had been done before. I feel the same way. Especially when it comes to other factions like the Antivan Crows. I get it in Origins they only had so many resources to work with. So plenty of ideas never came to be. And as such certain groups never established a codified look to them. But I kind of liked that about the Wardens and across in the first game. They came of as a band of mercs/assassins working with what’s available. In the crows case it fit. Why feel the need to wear such elaborate outfits we see in Veilguard. You’re assassins, why give yourself away to a target with such garish clothes?

Ok so wait a minute. Dead Varric can comment on stuff happening in the Lighthouse like finding Solas' RD collection so does that mean it was actually Rook that found it and then just pretended like it was Varric who actually did it? Since he's not real it would only make sense for me if he would only make idle conversation about stuff Rook knows Varric would have already known about before he died and then just the other non-specific quasi-inspirational platitudes that he offers. I skimmed through VG as fast as I could since it was physically painful to play so I didn't even pay attention to the finer lore details. - Why are the "Old Gods" underground? What are their prisons? Who put them there and when did this happen? How did Elgar`nan and Ghil break them out so quickly? (There is a mural at the beginning of the game in which a group of elves pull a dragon into a hole using chains, so I really thought this would be addressed). And what exactly are their souls? Is it the Evanuris Soul, Lifeforce, Spirit?

- If Dumat truly was the most poweful Old God then why didn`t Elgarn`nan claim him? Were the fake tevinter god names and natures created by the Evanuris or tevinter? How cognizant were the Evanuris while they were imprisoned? Why did they stop whispering after the Magisters breached the city (perhaps it was actually the Fogotten Ones or Executors)? (the Evanuris ended up commiting suicide by goading the Magisters, so it wasn`t a very good plan.)

- According to Solas, the Tevinter Magisters released a fragment of the Blight when they breached the Black City. That fragment grew beneath the earth and started the Blights that have swept across the world. Okay: Why did it appear underground? Did the Blight physically manifest or did it possess Lyrium or a Titan? Did it create Darkspawn from itself or was the Titans / Sha -Brytol involved? When DID the first Darkspawn come into existence? Did the Evanuris create Darkspawn before the Blight was sealed in the Black City?

- How and where was the Blight first sealed? Solas talks about (in the mural flashback) how the Evanuris seeks the magic of the Blight and how he has "sensed the breaking of the wards". Mythal is alive during this, so it definitely takes place before the Evanuris were banished.

You dont even need to be that deep into the lore to point out the gaping plotholes nu-lore created.

- If Elves were spirits that chose to become human why did only the Evanuris need vast amounts of lyrium to become mortal? In that particular regret it is implied that Mythal and Elgernan wanted to become mortal to lead the Elves better which would imply that there were lots of spirits that became human before the the Evanuris, why didnt they need lyrium?
Why doesnt Cole need Lyrium to become human for that matter and why did he become an actual human instead of an elf?
If magic was everywhere before the creation of the Veil why would they even need lyrium in the first place?

- Why did killing Mythal split her into many shards while killing Elgarnan and Ghil didnt? Why are they dead-dead? Shouldnt the same have happened to them?

And these are just the ones that instantly came into my mind.
I am sure if I sat down to ponder a bit I would come up with many more.

But again, these are the same issues that Inquisition already had. That game was also full of plotholes.

They need the lyrium to be stronger. Mythal says so in the regret scene. Spirits might not need lyrium to take physical form but the ancient elves used it to keep their spirit attributes. I remember Solas saying there wasnt quite anything like what Cole was. Maybe spirits using lyrium become elves and spirits not using it become human. Maybe Elgar'nan and the other just wanted to make themselves stand out physically when they built their bodies and everyone else followed and thats the distinguishing difference. Maybe Cole chose to become human because real Cole was.

I finally got the DAV artbook and shape language is what irreparably fucked Veilguard in my opinion. At one point they just went extremely overboard with it and lost the medieval fantasy aesthetic of the series. Bellara and her triangles literally made me nauseous. This problem was already starting in Inquisition but in that game the designs were much more sophisticated. What happened?

It first started in Trespasser, but the Inquisitor was able to stop the Dragon's Breath plan (= using gaatlok barrels to kill every important political figure in the south so the invasion would proceed smoothly).

In the first comics following Trespasser, we learn that the Qunari are actually making progress in Tevinter (they invade Ventus and other cities iirc) and Antiva, and their use of red lyrium-enhanced saarebas (a key point in Trespasser) is still maintained. The Inquisition (or what remains of it) collaborate with various figures, with Calpernia, Marcus, Dorian and others making an appearance in a very "spy-like" setting, focusing on the Qunari getting too bold for comfort (so Bioware was still deep in Joplin's development).

Then we got the comics with the elven squire and her Fereldan knight. These still followed the spy setting, with the squire infiltrating places, stopping Solas' agents from collecting relics and causing chaos, saving slaves etc.

Then we have the final comic, the one with Varric and Harding, and the quality drops, because it's clear it's the comic based on the new story we got in Veilguard: so it's just them chasing Solas like two idiots, helped by all the faction characters we will meet in Veilguard, adding absolutely nothing to the plot, the Qunari and Solas' agents completely forgotten.

Seekers abilities force it back out bringing back the reality. But the Fade provides and shows the way, always changing to whats around it. I think magic was the same before the Veil. I've had a hard time leveraging how exactly I picture the Fade and I think I think of the Fade as maybe a state of being. Like an invisible non-corporal fog. It occupies the same space as the waking world but slightly askew. They coexist and intertwine but are ultimately not the same. Solas says the Veil is a wound and there's some codex that specifically says it's not a net or barrier. So maybe the Veil is more akin to a distance or divide and places where it's thin are places where people/spirits/demons can just sorta jump over it. With breaches/rifts being more like wind tunnels that force them. Magic worked the same in that mages pull from the Fade but the Veil making it much more difficult for it to be reached, so it's no longer as easy as breathing and with the people being less capable of tapping into it naturally, the emergence of mages is more rare. I think the distinction would have existed before the Veil or Solas and the other elves wouldn't have had anything to leave behind or join.

Actually when I first played DA it reminded me of the feywild. I have a very very minimal understanding of d&d but that was where my first thought went.

I think the Blight being the severed dreams of the titans is really lame. I would have much preferred a lovecraftian explanation where it had mysterious and unknowable origins even for the ancient elves who then, classically used something they couldn't understand, and unleashed horrors upon the world, to the point that the only solution was for Solas to lock them all up and their city into an entire dimension just so it wouldn't spread. And because of the magisters, it spreads anyway.

The way things stand now, the Blight is really boring. The solution to the problem is simple, bring down the Fade and reunite the Titans/dwarves with their dreams. But we can't do it so now we just have a shitty, annoying and boring problem in our hands forever.

The worst part about it is that I see it as uniquely millennial-writing-ism. The millenial-writer urge to explain fucking every mystery away is baffling.
Its like these people do not understand that if they want to offer a resolution to a mystery they have to compete with years if not decades of fan-theories so either you come up with something super creative and unique and mind-blowing or it ends up as something much MUCH worse than what fans imagined.

The backlash to Drizzt is a fairly recent thing. People used to love him.
Personally I just like the side-characters and while Salvatore sucks at characterization I always thought he was really good at describing and visualizing fight-scenes.

The only reason I bothered trying BG3 was because I looked at the gameplay video and Steam and thought it looked enough like Dragon Age that I would love it. I also don't care for D&D and that game still made me feel like a kid again with how into it and how much fun I had with it. It deserves the all the hype.

Personally I think that "dark fantasy" is a bit overrated but if you enjoy it, more power to you.
I am Fan of the Forgotten Realms and there are some really good older books there.
Just tell me what you are looking for and I might give you some recommendations.
Also if you plas BG1 get the NPC mod.

Currently I am on a bend of reading older scifi/fantasy/horror stuff like Algernon Blackwood and man, no wonder Lovecraft felt inspired by this guy. Say what you want but it takes some amazing fucking writing skills to describe such a feeling of dread when essentially nothing happens and its just the main character shitting bricks.

There are some good RPGs out there if you are willing to give them a chance.

BG1 with the NPC mod is solid.
BG2 is gold.
The recent Pathfinder game has some of the best and worst writing in a game Ive ever seen at the same time.
Pillars of Eternity has no romance but really well written plot and partymembers even if the setting feels a bit.. disconnected and tryhard.

Planescape: Torment will forever hold a special place in my heart due to how good the writing is.

What are your favourite books? No surprise but outside of RPGs and VNs I mostly read. I'm open to anything as long as it's an adult writing style, has good female characters and is not y/a slop. The problem with dark fantasy in current year it's that it's all y/a, imo. Nobody has been able to do it like GRRM or Dragon Age and both series are extinct. But I'd like to try out other immersive worlds.

Interesting, I never heard of him. What book are you reading? Personally I've recently been getting into 70s sci-fi reading some Ursula LeGuin books, her shit is so fucking good I have no idea how Dispossessed or Left Hand of Darkness have never been adapted into anything.

Hmm.

I would say the Finder's Stone Trilogy is a guilty pleasure of mine.
But then again I really like schlocky pulp-fantasy which FR is.

Fafhrd & the Grey Mouser are also pretty old books but if you want Dark Fantasy its essentially what coined Dark Fantasy.
Same goes for the Thieves' World Books.

If it comes to good female characters I would recommend the "Songs & Swords" Quintet about Arilyn Moonblade set in the Forgotten Realms. (Starts with with "Elfshadow)
And the Finders Stone Trilogy featuring Alias the Sellsword. (Starts with "Curse of the Azure Bonds")
You could also try the Dragonlance-Series.

Thank you anon, I'm adding them to my reading list. Forgotten Realms lore looks kinda daunting desu, the fact that there's no codex in BG3 really throws me off. I looked it up online to see if there was a wikia I should read or something and people say if you don't know it to give up and not even try. I'm thinking the 70s and 80s is where scifi and fantasy peaked, it's all been downhill from there.

Well thats because Ed Greenwood is rather authistic about it which, in my eyes, just makes it more interesting.

But generally I feel like nowadays people have a weird approach to lore where they feel they need to know every tidbit to understand the setting which isnt really necessary.
The books/games do a good job of introducing you to what you need to understand about the story and if this makes you curious enough that you want to find out more about a setting that is good thing in my eyes.

Thats because people are lazy and dumb.
Again, you just need enough to understand the story.
BG3 makes a bit of references and nods to the prequels but its all just mainly memberberries.

Oh definitely.
The Hugos and GRRM had a hand in killing contemporary fantasy and soreading "weird-fantasy" which has this weird seething hatred for anything Tolkien or inspired by Tolkien.
