Some anon put together a dot plot chart a while back. It's a loose correlation with a lot of variability. Blitz has more data and more regular participation by stronger players so that's a better benchmark to use. Com blitz rating -200 = fide rating is sorta close for a lot of people (not IMs and GMs). For lichess that's about -300 unless you're over 2000. Very rough estimate.

If you were to enter an open tournament and they asked for a rating estimate, you could say 1500 and that would probably be at least somewhere in the general realm of the players you would be evenly matched with. Classical is different, mind you. You don't really know until you do it and find out.

This. One thing i've learned playing OTB is that when time is low in classical it's a completely different thing than just playing blitz. You have tons of understanding and analysis already in memory from spending all that time thinking about this one game. And a super GM certainly can analyze 999x better than a shitter like me

You hold off on it until it is essentially a given.
If you are offering the draw early in the game you are telling the opponent "I know you know how to play this correctly and we both know it results in a draw" if you defer the offer until the end it is because you don't think the opponent is going to know how to navigate it perfectly and you could secure the win, but you either misplayed and lost that advantage or they DID know how to navigate it.

The walls will never happen because whoever moves off starting row first is going to get captured by the mirrored pawn. Pawns on a/h are never undefended by rooks.
There is variance in there I'll give you that, but it ends up being the same issue we have now - players can see the inevitability of the gamestate before it arrives and avoid it, resulting in the same paradigm that draws thrive in.

The only way to argue this is via the wishy washy skill argument. Caruana has better tournament results and higher rating. Hikaru has one extra win over Caruana in classical and he's much better in the head to head matchup in rapid/blitz otb.

I prefer to rank by results and for that reason think Caruana is clear #2. By some skill level measure they are very close to equal.

The other frontrunner is caruana, but nakamura has his number. he currently like 4-0 against caruana in the past years and had the best classical performance rating in 2023 (I think outperforming even magnus), beat him again in candidates 2024, and I think every tournament they've attended together since he returned to professional in 2022 nakamura has either won it or placed higher than him. This is not to say that caruana isn't doing well or a top player. in fact I wouldn't say it's like a surefire 100% better, but at the end of the day it's a numbers game and I would most likely put my money on naka.

Ding playing games with time is going to come back to bite him hard eventually. Nonsense. That's actually a 1900 (lichess) rated puzzle if you can believe it. The motif is uncommon and it's something I think quite a few experienced players are getting wrong in the challenge modes like puzzle storm. The disgusting part of it is that white certainly thought during the game that e8=Queen stopped the mate threat. If I blundered a game like this I would be mad about it for days.

Ding's prep was kind of hairy for the Nepo match as well. I assumed at the time that since it was leaked (their anonymous lichess practice games) they had to scramble last minute to through some alternate ideas together. No leak this time but it still looks pretty, uh, scuffed, so I guess that's just how Ding operates.

Com's UI is horrible. It's clunky, the analysis board lags if you try to quickly cycle through moves with engine on, there are clock bugs that have existed for years with high profile controversy and still never fixed. They use severe lag compensation for third world countries such that the thirdie basically always has more increment than you do. Everything on the site is constantly demanding you pay money for features all other sites do better for free. Instead of fixing any of this they spend all their time adding gimmicks and bells and whistles and confetti on top of the garbage pile.

Neat. I play that version of the KID that Rapport played for white sometimes. For me it doesn't work out well, my king never seems to get to a safe square and there is always trouble. It's all because of that h5 move black has available, it's not hard to find, black doesn't need to know it ahead of time, and it's a problem. It's technically fine, the opening has plans for this if you castle instead of h4 but it's all very uncomfortable to the point that I question why i'm even playing this difficult to play thing that isn't even good.

Centralize queen

Yeah you can play the Italian or Spanish. The Ruy has a lot of different variations that Black can play. The Italian does not have as many and more often gets similar positions, I think.

If you start with the Italian you may get a sour impression as even your beginner opponents will have some trap or trick prepared or know a few moves of main line theory. I think this is why some new players bounce off the game as being too memorization heavy. If you just want to get the pieces out and play an ordinary game that doesn't get too messy too soon, d4 will work fine. However, you must learn the tactics behind all of the e4 traps anyway so avoiding it initially can slow your development.

If I had to do it all over again I would start with the king's gambit. Sharp, dangerous, serious game starts move 2. It would have saved me months of wasted time trying to play "safe".

Even if you manage to snatch the d4 pawn or be up more material than that the position remains highly precarious and surprisingly complex even at very low levels. White can easily drop three pawns and be equal because it's up to black to find the precise moves in order to not get miniatured. And from a programming perspective and Scala enthusiast it’s one of the most efficient backends I’ve seen. There’s a reason why it feels so much better to play bullet on lichess than dotscam.
