When people say they "want to learn the matchup" they are not wanting to learn every single piece of frame data, all the frame data in the game is already on hundreds of websites so by your retarded logic theres no point in labbing in the first place when you can just look up the frame data of a move and then just perfectly learn how to counter any move right? its the difference between knowledge and experience, tekken is unique in the way you get placed in a variety of different situations due to the 3d aspect of the game
When people say they want infinite rematches to "learn the matchup" its to be able to learn the moment to moment gameplay of a character and the person using the character, how many times have you seen people in this very general say "ive labbed this move a hundred times and still get hit in an actual game" this game is dynamic (and quite buggy at the moment) so learning the perfect counter to one move in a single replay wont help you do shit
One and doneing is why so many drop this game congrats you beat a red rank by frame trapping and knowledge checking someone who for the last 30+ games only sees the same 4 characters, "just lab more" is the battle cry of frauds and cowards

i just can't seem to get a feeling for when i should contest and when i shouldn't. i try to backdash when i get hit but i swear most strings in this game move you so forward i find it very hard to disengage
that's really what i struggle with most. when i play with people that are more relaxed i can focus more on whiff punishing and thinking about what i'm pressing, but when i'm getting mauled by a jin or a kazuya rushing me down i just don't know what to do, every interaction feels like a coinflip and if i guess wrong i'm in the ground guessing again

what's a way to do that, literally tailored for you? watch a replay against a character you don't understand

that's a nice ideal regarding a system you never experienced. 7 was in fact the anomaly and in tag 2/6 you had ft1 delay netplay that was torturous, yet people emerged from that as good players (fergus, sephiblack, glaciating)

you labbed it but you didn't practice the counter-play to where it became muscle memory. sometimes you have to undo the muscle memory, because you surrender mental frames when you commit to a flash duck every time against dragunov's df1 on block, for example

so you get a sixth sense for when they want to go for another low you can interrupt and when you can't? kinda makes sense, and what you say is true i'm terrified of ducking because the amount of huge launchers i've eaten going like "okay they ran up to me, they probably will try to chip or get a jab in" and then bang i'm in the air

the game also feels so fast paced it's really hard to get a feel for what the opponent likes to do. most of the few games i win are usually 1-2 after i have some time to pick apart what they like to do, and lots of people 1 and done

sorry I had a stroke
he doesn't have much else as far as keepout tools go, but it doesn't get much better than a safe df2 (basically just electrics/long-range mid CH launchers like Jin's f4)

Yes and the ft2 system actively hinders you trying to do this. Ive friended people after a game where they just stomped me but no one ever accepts because why would anyone play a player match when you can fraud out another win and get your free 400+ points

A great way to learn that muscle memory is by actually playing the game and being in those situations but the current system incentivizes one and doneing since there is no reason to risk your points and gaining less then you would just leaving after the first win

Nothing is lost with an infinite rematch system not sure why you are defending a system pretty much everyone hates

agreed on that, i kinda freeze up and struggle getting my aggression going in people's faces. doesn't help that i keep fucking up the ws4 to DSS f1 frametrap as well and people just challenge me for free, but that's just poor execution on my part

another thing i feel happens to me a lot is i'll get two or three interactions (with slide or hitting rekkas) but when i fuck up i always eat a huge launcher and die in two of those

you learn the idealistic way to play the character, and then what you will run into in your own online rank bracket (in other words, gimmicks)
most players are a mix of both until god ranks, and plenty of characters get away with murder even there, and watching a character guide primes you on what their gameplan/common moves are

that's because the communication tools in this game are bad
I generally ignore those because you don't know if they want to talk trash or not, also I think the friend list caps out at like 100 anyway, so maybe they already maxed theirs out
if you want to play casuals, go to the lounge, there are purple cabinets there with players of all skill levels. and player match has a way to find open lobbies

at the end of the day it's ranked and you have points on the line, my point was they were learning even less when playing in that environment, they had to learn tekken with the limited tools in the game and from separate websites, you have the luxury of a good training mode

I'm not against it, it's just deathmatching would not fix the core issues

This may just be my personal view but from what ive seen most people play the same characters in pretty differing ways, maybe in top GOD ranks there is a "right" way to play the character but not everyone is attempting to be some top 0.5% player they just want what they feel is a fair and even match (which is very rare in tekken to begin with unless you are top ranks) so when you have some feng or alisa fraud just running you over and you want to actually learn how to deal with all the shit they are throwing at you, you have to go and do homework vs playing the actual game and using trial and error to learn what you are doing wrong, people learn differently.

tekken is a fairly unique game where as things like fps skills translate pretty well from game to game a headshot is always a headshot.
Learning how to perfectly EWGF and KDB will provide you with you with little to no help in a game like smash (yes it is a fighting game) or something like marvel. Fighting games are pretty diverse, but skills do translate like reaction times and learning high low mix ups etc.

yes? why do you expect to win against someone at the same skill level (your rank) if they know your character but you don't know theirs
feng and alisa are a very good example because they have so many ways to cheese but it never falls off, they remain cheesy even at the highest level of play - so it's imperative that you learn how to fight them early
"trail and error" will take way too long especially in modern tekken where you can't tell what's a mid from a high and sometimes even a low (feng's qcf1)

it's more limiting, but why shouldn't a ranked system have a limitation? why should I be able to freely pick and choose, leave when I want, and then rematch someone I keep beating
I would be in favor of being forced to play a ft2, and if you have to quit early, you surrender points

as a former top 1% league player the main difference is that in league and other games you can learn just by playing the game and in fact that's the best way to do it
in tekken you're going to have to spend a lot of time in the lab practicing things by yourself. the time commitment it asks of you is a lot more akin to learning an instrument or a hard skill in the sense that there's this time you need to dedicate where you will be having pretty limited fun (since you aren't playing the game but really more like studying) just to have fun actually playing the game. this drives lots of people away because it's a time commitment most people aren't willing to do for a videogame that will change significantly in a few years anyway (or hell even a patch from now)

the gameplay loop is different too. games like dota or league have downtime and i can check out things on the internet while walking to lane or recalling or stuff. here i get knowledge checked by a character i haven't played against and i have to go to training, find the string, lab the string, and then pray i get the same character soon so i can see if i can pull it off ingame. this is also enjoyable in its own way but i can see why people dislike it

As a general rule powerful moves are powerful because they are heavily punishable when blocked (8 fucks with this via heat dash making some moves safe which is dumb but that's an aside). If you don't punish it then they have no reason to stop and think twice instead of spamming it. Don't be afraid to duck if you think a low is coming (you have recognized a pattern). But yes eating some lows is not bad, mids are a lot scarier. Don't forget you can also sidestep besides backdash. Block a quick poke? try sidestep

Anyway, at your rank you just need to play more and watch more like way more, there's no substitute.

The game comically broken was its one saving grace and actually made it fun. It used to be kusoge. Now it is just kuso. It was never going to be a serious competitive title like Tekken 7 was for most of its lifespan, but it could have succeeded as a party masher. That went out the window when they nerfed Heat Burst into oblivion, though.

Its the opposite, post-T7 there was a large pool of intermediate level players who could play semi-decent Tekken and were ready for a more complex, challenging game like Tag 2, assuming reasonable balance and netplay. H&M consistently misdiagnose why Tekken is doing well/not doing well. The only good decisions they make are by accident.

Tekken 7's story didn't matter at all when they made such a big deal about 8's story being serious and now we're just back to watching Heihachi and Kazuya beating each other up for another 7 years

I may be a Tekken fan but objectively speaking this game is as perfect as fighter can possibly get – online matches are found in seconds if not milliseconds and run like clockwork, controls feel intuitive and fluid, ingame tutorial actually explains the basics of fighting games like frame data, characters and environments look lively, vibrant and most importantly discernible, even losing in SF6 doesn’t feel as bad as in other FGs to me because of everlasting feel-good vibe permeating the game. It’s a perfect entry point for anyone even remotely interested in this genre.

Xrd has alot of heart, arcsys was desperate to turn gear into a million copies sold kinda series so thats why they changed so much. I think the game in retrospect was succesful because the competition at the time (t7 sf5) was flawed. The tower system and general battle mechanics arent good.

EVERY SINGLE TIME I try to interrupt I eat shit, EVERY SINGLE TIME I step I get tracked. EVERY SINGLE TIME I try to take my turn back woops random hopkick or evasive launcher. Everyone is just constantly throwing random shit in blue ranks that is unsafe but either has so much pushback I can barely punish it and even if I punish it who cares? I get my 35 damage punish then I slip up once and I'm in the corner vs heat opponent at 50% HP because every fucking combo does at least 50%.

Nina is overtuned but only at the highest possible skill level. If you are at fujin then you are simply lacking in skill like block punishment and spacing and your character does not matter at all. Learning frame data and when to press is more important at that level. I'm a tekken god nina main and can coach you if you post some replays.

I didn't pick Kazuya myself. All I wanted is to mash, have fun, do funny moves, even back in Tekken 7. Asuka, lobbies with friends, unblockables, grabs, laughter. Life was simple, and I was happy. And I went into the dreadful practice mode, the first time of my life, to look at Kazuya. It struck me like a lightning. Ten minutes later I was watching electric guides, how to do a helsweep, what is wavu. Mishima autism corroded me immediately, now I felt just how honest my gameplay must be. Ten more minutes and I did my first electric. A simple fool, not knowing anything I told my friends that I just did PEWGF. I was proud. Mishima pride flew through my veins. Everyone is a fraud. Every waifu is overtuned. This is real Tekken. Multiple times I've tried to escape Kazuya's grasp, tried playing Lee, Marshall, Paul, Lili, but nothing could satisfy me, nothing but landing that electric, getting your helsweep blocked and raging, feeling superior to all those lowly mashers. After all those years, and still... MAAAASKUUUU

depends on the situation
like if you are in neutral, you can probably ssl or swl all of those
if you are up close then since they are all very slow moves you can keep him at bay with your fast pokes and counterhits
if it's on oki you can choose to stay/roll on the ground so he has to start thinking about using ff4 or changing his timing
if you are heavily minus like after a heat engager then you kinda just have to take it but even then, if the connection is good you can try fuzzy duck the hellsweep since it comes out faster than the other two with immediate timing
also depending on the life situation taking the low can be valid, you also need to read your opponent's lifebar situation like how desperate would they be for a hellsweep if they will die if it gets blocked and so on
and ofc kazuya also has options to deal with your options to these situations but those layers are what the game is about

yeah sure sometimes you'll get swept and then he reads you in all the follow up situation perfectly and you get rolled
but most of the times if you are playing the neutral well and playing the wakeup mindgames properly it becomes hard for the kazuya to do that consistently
also blocking/stepping the sweep just once means (You) get the big combo to the wall, to the oki and you get to roll him

you don't just either stay down or get up, you sometimes stay longer, sometimes stay a bit and then get up to block the ff4, sometimes you wake up immediately, sometimes you wake up and swl to beat a delayed mix since he was waiting for your getup, sometimes you use get up kicks, sometimes hold forward, toekick, spring kick etc you have a ton of options to mental stack him and use depending on how your current opponent plays the situation but ofc you have to observe that and make your decisions based on that
also

+5 is nothing for slower moves, you can still walk the big buttons with that frame disadvantage if done on immediate timing
can even ch him out of them or power crush/hopekick etc
make him think how to use the frames, make him frame trap you instead of mix you

if it does, it's not a flipover so it'll push you away and reset to neutral which is small price to pay
