So far, I've worked out that doing something like Bg6 forces black to play Bxf6+
although I don't know what's the follow up from there so I don't think that's the right way to start, maybe something similar though.

There is a clear level of hard puzzle that acts as a brick wall to me. It's around 2000 chesstempo level. The kind where i still don't immediately get it even if shown the entire solution. Then when i do get it i throw up my hands and say there is no way i would find that with an hour to burn in a classical game if told on that move to look for a win.

This makes me sad as I know players rated around 2000 fide can solve these puzzles pretty easily given 15 minutes. I'm too stupid to get better.

You were probably missing an idea of what the general flow of the game looks like. Those youtube videos are good to get a sense of what the players are trying to accomplish move by move. It's a lot of pawn structure, piece development and improvement, controlling specific squares and open files. If you're new and you don't quite get how that works, it's definitely going to be a boost for your rating like you said.

I assume it's the pin on f7 with tempo against a8. White's also sorta threatening to win back material with Bxf5 and Bxh7+ if black doesn't do anything, so that might be more potential tactics. Crucially Qb7 doesn't work because black can't trade after Bc4 because then white would win the exchange back.

Ding plays like he wants out right now. not enough that he is going to retire for good, he might still play here and there, but the WC format really does feel like a chore for anyone involved. he is much less vocal than Magnus but his actions are talking for him, with the lethargy/depression showing in his prep, otb, time management, attitude. i truly believe that the WC format has always been rigged by the USSR to stack odds in their favor by analysing slurpfests 24/7 with their "superpower" 100+ group of turboshitters. to say the least, the entire format clearly doesnt favor the stronger player, as the candidates itself can be wintraded, and the wc is only 14 games of slow chess which is a low sample size to see who plays better chess on average.

It's a tense boredom. Ding is kind of playing like he's trying to hold a lead despite not actually having a lead. I don't understand what Gukesh is trying to do. I think Gukesh is playing honest chess but Ding is stonewalling by forcing draws forever so no real games can happen.
The game 6 queen trade off 2x was blatantly retarded and showed what Ding is up to. Magnus being the people's champ is putting a damper on the whole thing but Ding is playing like a rules lawyer type and people HATE seeing that at this level of competition.

What Ding is doing is "smart" but ultimately cowardly and people want to see him play to win when he wont even when he has the advantage.

If you don't have the deep understanding and intuition, earned from experience, that allows one to be good in Rapid and Blitz, you shouldn't be able to be World Champion. You shouldn't be able to become WC just memorizing openings and calculating lines really quickly like Gukesh. The World Championship should include Classical, Rapid, and Blitz in equal measure.

I agree with you, but the ability for them to be decided completely in classical appeals to tradition. And I think there's some merit in that, too.
So much of chess these days is rapid and blitzslop. I personally prefer faster time control games, but for the world championship, the old style feels appropriate.

Personally, I say throw out increment altogether and make it G60 or G90. The openings are usually blitzed out anyways and 2-3 hours is sufficient for a complex middlegame before trading down into an endgame scramble.

You're using 2018 era arguments here. The meta already changed. Games are leaving well trodden theory much earlier on average than they used to because of the way engine assisted prep has evolved. Now the meta is to prep the hell out of some rare sideline or novelty that isn't objectively great on the bet that your familiarity with the resulting positions will make up for any suboptimal aspects of the direction you've chosen to take. That's why you're seeing both Ding and Gukesh play something completely different every game. It was not common to see WCC contenders go for e4 d4 c4 and Nf3 all in the same match.

I do, but I'm saying that you're exaggerating a lot by making it seem like modern chess games are just copies of each other before ending in a draw when really it's more like they follow established opening theory for 10-15 moves before introducing a new idea that they hope will lead them into a middlegame that gives them an advantage.

This is why before playing my first move I take a few seconds to take a peak at their ratings and performance history. If I see anything suspicious, I just abort and block them. The report button is a farce anyways, I stopped using it a while ago. I haven't played a single cheater since adopting this new method of filtering opponents.

You have to be a streamer or pro for the report option to even connect to a system.

The current pro strat of going deep on the 4th or 5th best line hoping the opponent doesn't know that line is LITERALLY the gimmick used when cheating using an engine lol.
