Their NEEDS to be a consequence for "Escaping to Checkpoint" for a Boss so it can't just be spammed.
Like you lose 10% of your total gold or something, which at endgame could be devastating.

poe2 has attacked this problem directly, it might not be perfectly balanced at launch but (e.g.) the Act 2 boss is literally an attrition boss with a couple of one-shots thrown in.

hardcore was never an intended gamemode, neither was ssf. they added those modes because nolifers were already doing those challenges unofficially anyway. the VISION has always been sc trade. that is what the game is designed for, and balanced around. it's ok to be mad as a hc player that your mode sucks, but that's your own fault for playing an unintended game mode. it was a mistake to give these people the legitimacy of a flag on character creation.

Most telegraphing is voicelines or an animation that is indiscernable from any other move until you've seen it at least once that you have to notice while dodging poop.

it wouldn't be. a bunch of players would learn the mechanics of all the bosses in softcore and the exact amount of gear you need to be safe enough, then just proceed with minimal danger.
a bunch would get stuck unable to pass Act 2 and just replay those acts endlessly.
a bunch would die with any amount of gear because they are bad at active gameplay and can't practice the bosses.

you've DECIDED that the above scenarios constitute "difficulty" in a gear based ARPG but really they're all self-imposed and that's where the warm feeling of playing HC comes from.

really if you wanted difficulty in HC you'd do time challenges, and even then RNG would be very impactful (which in non-timed HC you remove by grinding).

Just saw the interview with Jonathan about being able to instantly and easily reset the boss if you are over your head. Pressing escape and respawn at checkpoint is a logout macro with one extra step. Logout macros are completely artificial and break immersion. This cheesy mechanic fundamentally undermines the sense of reality and risk in the game. It should have been removed a long time ago, but but given PoE's design it sort of had to stay around. To worry about all the other "cheese" strats like portaling out of a bossfight, but leaving in the all time cheesiest of mechanics in the logout macro seems counter productive. Now that PoE2 has the ability to pause to stop DC deaths, logout macro needs to go.

we don't really know how deadly PoE2 is because no one's been overgearing. but a lot of the deadliness is in the form of attrition: i.e you can die in a bossfight by running out of flasks not because you got oneshot.

I'm not sure if the people asking for no-logout, full committment bossfights really realize how different it is to PoE1.

in PoE2 it's possible to fail a fight because you didn't have ENOUGH damage, i.e. you put too much into defense and run out of sustain. not similar to the poe1 HC experience with its no-interrupt TPs.

the ironic thing about asking for no-logout bossfights is that you could easily realize you were going to fail long in advance, and be stuck with your character slowly dying while you can barely damage a boss your build wasn't ready for.

Logging out should at least brick your map/boss fight like you died.
If that isn't the case HC will literally be less punishing than SC given how there are fewer one shots and HC players are black belts at pedaling.

Even in singleplayer games, if there's a hc mode that can be bypassed by closing the game sucks. People will tell you they beat the hc and then you find out "oh I just alt f4 a couple times" but still act like they actually did beat it. Looks like everyone is wrong. The pause is only there when the server detects latency of more than 100ms (rip thirdies, game perma paused) not when you hit esc.
If you alt+f4 you will re-enter exactly where you left.
So you need to press esc and restart at checkpoint before you die.

99.99% sure when Mark says checkpoint, For campaign its a checkpoint, and the map checkpoint is outside the map. And for bosses, since you arent allowed to portal in and out, I would assume they thought of this and it just makes it so you cant reenter when you choose "return to checkpoint" otherwise you get the cheese that people are suggesting in this thread, but it would be such an insane oversight that I doubt it works that way at all.
