An interesting positional slowroll that ultimately squeezed its way into a draw.

I think Hammer was right that Ding had a strong position, but it was only from the nigh unspottable Rook to B2 earlier in the game to protect the B3 pawn while C pawn kicks the knight out like seven moves later.

A typical world championship draw. Not very exciting, but interesting enough.

In that Tata rapid interview he basically admitted he barely works on chess anymore, which certainly shows in his classical games. Imo he got mindbroken by Sneedi cucking him out of the Candidates. Ding won the 1st game, but that's only to make it not a walk over, thank god.

However Ding is still far from being the favorite to win it.
He is still shaky, like seen today. He does not want to continue grinding games and take the easy way out.
Just make the position complex and there is a high chance he will blunder and choke.

Magnus has it in his head that classical time control standard chess is boring and too prep-heavy even though that's an entirely self-imposed problem of his own creation so he's much more interested in playing fast time controls and peddling freestyle chess.
Even if Alireza somehow became champion in the next few years, I think Magnus isn't going to be motivated enough to return to classical chess to qualify for Candidates, play through and win Candidates, and then try to win a Championship.

The meta Magnus is playing right now is fashionable because he's been able to make it work well for himself and hasn't been able to face a serious challenger in his lifetime with a rival meta. As far as I'm aware of, they'd delete art contributions to art threads (Why I stopped doing requests in the /tg/ artthreads entirely), and images of real Magic cards in the MTG threads.
It was the entire board, every single general. Lots of people used to post across several generals, so every general having all of its frequent posters culled means that even the smaller generals suffered.

What are your prediction for next game's opening?
For me, I listened to what Kramnik had to say, so I predict that Gukesh will play 1.e4 again, and Ding will play something other than the French. I would guess either 1...e5 or 1...c6. Most likely 1...e5, and Gukesh would likely play the Italian.
That is what I think.

I'd guess he's more likely to do an e5 line and see what Gukesh has cooked up there. It's harder to guess with Rapport doing Ding's prep. My assessment of this game is that the position was extremely unclear, and Ding made two key mistakes with not getting his bishop out faster, and rh5 later.
This wasn't Gukesh's game to win, he honestly played very loosely and inaccurately. But Ding absolutely lost that game. Ding didn't get outplayed, he played himself.

The problem is that, yes getting his bishop "Trapped' was a top engine line, but the follow through was this extremely bizarre bf7 jank that was really just not easy to spot. I think Ding had the right idea, but the right idea turned the game into an absolute fog that you just couldn't penetrate. Too much chaos created, at that point you're just moving randomly, and he made the wrong mostly arbitrary move with the rook, and took way too long to do it.

Interesting game still.

So now that the last three WCC matches in a row have turned into unmitigated shitshows, will we finally see some changes to this dogshit format? Don't care if Magnus plays or not, but with him out on top and undefeated the lineage is already broken anyways. Might as well make some changes while there's a chance.

My personal favorite potential change: require the champion to qualify for the candidates. If he qualifies, he doesn't have to play in it and automatically gets to defend. If he doesn't, the top 2 play for the new championship.

I think Gukesh just had a really off game 1 due to nerves. I hate to say it but I wouldn’t be surprised if the Ding collapse that everyone had predicted coming into this match does come into fruition. Ding’s lack of prep, mental fragility, one move blunders and time management/freezing issues were all on full display this game. I know a lot of us hoped he was playing ‘5D’ chess / was pulling off a best Oscar performance but I think he’s genuinely playing at a 2600-2650 level at the moment and that most likely ain’t gonna cut it over 14 games against an almost 2800 player who’s still improving.
