I have very few nice things to say about DA2, but one thing I miss from it is the party dynamics of everyone being a spiteful, antisocial cunt towards each other. Especially Isabela's needling of Aveline. Could you imagine anyone in Veilguard weaponizing their teammate's dead spouse completely out of nowhere just to get a rise out of them?

There is just a shitty song in "Old Tevene" (or so the subtitles say) in one of Neve's quests, it lasts less than thirty seconds and it's barely memorable. That was probably the "tavern song" the devs said they liked when they were asked whether there would be new tavern songs like those in Inquisition. Lying bastards really tricked us.

And Lich is an old tevene word for a corpse
And that song in the tavern during Neve's quest was 100% tevene

There is also very little elven, except for some lines from Ghilan'nain and Solas' first lines when he argues with Elgar'nan. DAO and Inquisition were full of elven text, they even hired a linguist to create the conlag for them. I remember how people tried to translate the poem found under a pillar in Skyhold, the Emerald Knights' ruins, the lullaby found in Trespasser and another poem Bioware published in the second lore book for YEARS. Veilguard deals with elven gods, there is a map set in Arlathan, and yet it didn't give us shit. It feels empty as fuck even in this regard.

Anyway the elven language is not real or even a language it's some cipher shit that has no actual grammar. Even in the game it says that the interpretation of elven is based on literal vibes. One of my favorite DA2 bits is if you take Anders and Fenris along with you to the conclusion of Merrill's companion quest, they unite for the first and last time in the game to berate the living shit out of her while she's having a breakdown. In DAO you can pretty much become in unkillable god, but you don't play it for the gameplay. DA2 can be a bit more challenging, the gameplay improved imo.

Party members aside I'm wondering how much flavour there is in each Rook faction choice, I played a Grey Warden and actually enjoyed a lot of the writing/choices you could make when available, but GW is such a big part of the story compared to the other factions.

I think Grey Warden gets the most reactivity which is right considering the story and their importance in the series. I've seen multiple say that Mourn Watch has the most unique interactions including racial ones that are specific eg dwarf mourn watch. Lowest are lords of fortune and shadow dragons which is surprising considering how Tevinter focused the game is.

Origins has the classic CRPG charm and combat I really enjoy, best story. Its only drawback is the middle section drags.
All the companions are remember-able and I still remember a lot of the side quest clearly. I've played it 3 times start to finish.

Veilguard other than some poor writing and the darkspawn looking goofy has no problems, the levels are well designed, and combat is snappy and doesn't feel dragged out (unless you play on highest difficulty but that is on you).
Most of the bad writing stops after the first 4 hours, except the whole Minrathis/Treviso blunder, suck it up Neve/Lucanis.
The lack of ongoing world state sucks ass but I was honestly never happy with how they did it in previous games with the most interesting choices taking a back seat to the vanilla common choices, the awoken and old god baby been practically blaring examples. Played through once doing a second playthrough now.

If we had gone straight into Veilguard from Origins I would feel differently as it is a pretty big mood shift but we didn't we had Inquisition and DA2.

Inquisition has so many fucking problems to the drawn out pacing to the ignoring of world states. To not been able to agree with Sera at all, Gaspard did nothing wrong and is the better ruler for Orlais future but no lesbian murderers one of which attempted genocide because of her gay guilt are totally better.
The collect quests which are bullshit long. Not been able to change out of your goofy ass pajamas until 1/3rd though the game. The platforming map areas are so tedious and so are the massive empty maps. The Hinterlands, the starting area been so stupidly big.
I still enjoyed Inquisition, played it twice but its negatives are so big its just not a well designed game at the end of the day.

DA2 although a great story they did change Anders and Merril a lot from their first appearance which I think is worth mentioning with people screaming about lore. The combat is just awful. I've played it once, but a 2nd playthrough I lost all drive to continue because the Arishok fight is impossible unless you're playing a warrior. Tried a few times since but great story not the rest of the game is too poor to rate it higher.

I mouth diarrheaed bit, sorry.
I've read all the book except Last Flight which I found tedious as hell to get through. They're all good but Masked Empire and The Stolen Throne are my favourites.

Yeah it doesn't make sense to me either. Looks like they tried to do a fantasy New York city with big pointy skyscrapers and neon magic lights. I prefer the old concept art of it which had an ancient, almost falling apart, feel about it but still feeling very imposing due to the scale.

I am curious about something. How was it possible to make Titans tranquil at all? The Veil didn't exist back then so how can you be cut off from the Fade? There was no seperation meaning you are in contact with magic at all times. It's why Elves were immortal. Anders bringing in a piece of the Fade was enough to temporarily restore Karl's emotions and the cure to tranquility is being touched by a spirit. Wouldn't any attempt at tranquility be undone instantly?

I don't think they were cut off from the fade, but cut off from magic completely which was a natural part of the world then. Titans seem to be innate magical beings in a symbiosis with the world. They form the earth itself, the dwarves then were in a symbiotic relationship living off the titan and the titan was using the dwarves to look after them. Making them tranquil probably started polluting the world and Solas, when creating the fade, gathered up all the blight and locked it away.

It's not trying to be some weird abomination of CRPG fused with APRG for starters, it's just a straight up decent ARPG that ticks the right boxes for me, fluid combat with meaty hits. Leans more towards KH-style combat with simple combo chains with some modifier keys/finishers and not Bayonetta-style with a bagillion different moves obfuscated by memorizing 20 different key inputs. Skill tree is decent enough, I've only done one playthrough with melee so I'll have to see how varied it can be on another go round.

The "combo" system isn't even that important, at most it's just a bit of extra damage and time slow down, which you can achieve with a single skill or with runes anyway.

My only complaint would probably be that the block indicator isn't always reliable but I found over time that reading an enemies attack animation was usually better.

Agreed. Kirkwall feels as much of a character as anything else in DA2 and the art design of the place feels very oppressive, uncomfortable and both big and small. Minrathous looks like a fun place to go for a party with all its bright lights and other weird shit.

Okay, i finally got the grip, stopped fucking around with different characters and managed to finish the game doing every single quest.

Recollecting my first years in Kirkwall, I have to agree. Getting lost was commonplace. The city was a sprawling mess.

The mason showed me a plan of the city, and my heart skipped a beat. There were patterns in the intersections, back alleys, and boulevards. Some magisters believed in the power of symbols or shapes. In the oldest parts of the city, one can make out the outlines of glyphs in the very streets! What manner of magic is this?

Inquisition's the only DA to have an actual memorable score in my opinion.

It's more like a licensing sort of deal. By hiring Zimmer's studio to do the soundtrack they're legally allowed to say the soundtrack was made by Hans Zimmer, even if Zimmer never composed a single beat for the whole thing. They sort of did this back with ME3 where they got Clint Mansell to do the soundtrack. Mansell is talented and highly competent in his own right, but I would say the same of Jack Wall, whose prior work on ME had been universally lauded. But Jack Wall wasn't a big famous Hollywood composer.
