Eeeh, it's not clear. In Inquisition we learn all the Evanuris had these "foci" (the magisters from Tevinter even copied them, Dorian says), used to enhance their magic and powers. A mural in Trespasser heavily implied these orbs were made out of lyrium, or maybe of Titans' hearts. You can also find a fuckton of them hidden behind a wall in the library, next to Sandal's diary.

The new writers probably decided to add one more step to Solas' old ritual by reusing the lyrium idol, so now the new canon seems to be that Solas created the Veil using his foci + his dagger (one of the mage specializations in Veilguard makes you fight with a dagger and orb, after all). First he tries to unlock his orb, since recovering the blade is definitely more complicated, but is too weak to do so -> Inquisition happens -> the Orb is broken -> Solas has to go for plan B: recover the idol, cleanse it from red lyrium, enter the Fade, and restore the old world of the elves. It seems the Orb would have made things much easier, while the blade is less powerful/doesn't allow him to physically enter the Fade as easily as the Orb could.

I'm surprised there is even still discussion about this game considering it is essentially dead as of veilguard. The nu-writers destroyed the existing lore and characters to make a blank slate world through which they can push their own shitty characters. Not even Solavellans were spared, having their elf inquisitor be turned into piece of cardboard with zero standards who does nothing but pine for Solas and want to be with him despite the fact that he kills Varric and did everything for his actual true love, Mythal. The sales tanked, the reviews aee abysmally bad and Bioware aren't even trying to salvage it, instead trucking right along to ruin their last great IP Mass Effect. Dragon Age is a dead world with no future and the sooner you accept that, the better

I would say Varric is better at helping someone make a choices than convince other to change their opinion. His big moments were him convince Hawke and his brother to work together and convince Cole to be more human. He works better when he tries to steer people who are indecisive than people who're already make up their mind.

Yeah. I could not believe my eyes at the end of his quest when he asked to leave the party to spend an evening in a more pleasing way, and instead of something romance-related he went to the Lighthouse to drink his fucking coffee. You can't even excuse it with "ooh but he can't flirt, he can't express his emotions because of the trauma, it's rook's fault" FUCK OFF. Go and see with you own eyes how he talks to Neve and about her when they romance each other.
I could write an essay on what I think went wrong, but I won't even bother. The game, and its characters, are not worth the effort.

I'd argue having the companion who hates being touched and gets PTSD from sex with the PC suddenly having a casual fling with someone else isn't well done. Inquisition was handled a bit better though it helps it paired up the least popular romance options.
