What? FFVII sold 330,000 in the first weekend in just the US. This has sold 40k less than that *worldwide* and in two months. A few weeks after launch in the US, FFVII had sold 500,000 in that country alone. It sold 3.27 million copies by the end of the year in just Japan. Dragon Quest sold 1.3 million in one day just in Japan.

So yeah, 289,000 worldwide in two months is bad, even more so when you compare it to what classic JRPGs sold in what was probably your day.

Back in the day a game could be made by 50 people in a year. Now it can take thousands of people several years. Naturally this leads to a massively increased budget, so a game that sold 500k in 1996 could be a massive success, while a game that sells 500k in 2024 could lead to the studio being closed.

This. XVI just always feels... small.

Visually very pretty and well produced, but despite roaming across multiple continents I always feel like there is barely anything to DO aside from like 1-2 sidequests per area and a then you continue the main quest. Hunts are not really side content, they are required to upgrade your gear so they are basically mandatory. There's no minigames or subsystems to speak of, which is actually really glaring in retrospect because you'd think that a base management minigame for the Hideaway would be an obvious include. Clive is supposedly the leader of this organization, but it never really feels like it. He always feels like he is basically acting solo while everyone around him drops everything to support him.

This crosses over to the next big weakness: the party sucks. Cid 1 is a cool dude and lends gravitas to the story, but once he is out of the game the party just feels anemic. Jill has no personality beyond being supportive of you. I literally cannot imagine what Jill does any time you are not in the room, she doesn't seem to have any wants or motivations of her own in the whole game aside from the one chapter of the story where she wants to kill the guy who enslaved her, which you were definitely going to fight anyway.
Torgal is a dog. He adds nothing, and frankly the fact that he is there all the time becomes harder and harder to justify as time goes on to the point that they have to make him magic to explain why he is not dead yet, which comes out of fucking nowhere and is baffling when it happens.
Joshua is, again, just supportive f you. The only thing he brings to the table is that he competes with Clive for messiah complex
There is no real character dynamic here, everything Clive could ever say just has the other party members respond with "And I agree with that" or "Bark". The fact that literally everyone in the core party knew each other as kids, was presumed dead, and turned out not to be is also weak.

The issue with FF XIII is that it's lifeless. No NPCs, no interesting buildings or landscapes, no shops besides the little orb, no minigames, absolutely nothing. It's quite literally just fight enemies > cutscene > fight enemies > cutscene which the occasional treasure chest 10ft off the path. Playing FF XIII doesn't feel like venturing into a new world. There is no sense of awe or wonder that we feel from playing other JRPGs. The linearity is just the small aspect of said problem.

FF4 is pretty great. Not a fan of having my party swapped around so much, but all the characters have been pretty good so it's not a huge deal.

I think Rydia and Cid are my favorites, but Tellah had a pretty great story arc.

My only other complaint is Paladin class felt like a huge downgrade. The cover ability was good for getting under leveled characters up to par, but I haven't used it since.

She's meant to be proving herself as a worthy leader but everything pretty much gets handed to her.
You're there to help her but most of the time so is everybody else, with other characters sorta just getting resolved on their own. Nothing even makes her really srand out as being unique except for being a Hrothgar, her personality is bland and her actions are just typical at best. Worst of all is that several other long-standing characters get pushed aside for her sake, to the point where she has more lines than every other main character combined, even though rhose characters are present to a degree.
The english VA is a scapegoat for a character who's just bland and uninteresting but is still being pushed as the next 'big' part of the team.

Nothing, outside of maybe a fee for putting them on the e-shop. Another reason could be that it'd be a bit weird to just drop them on there randomly.
They even updated the PC version of III a while back to push it closer to the PSP's standard.

Im 99,9% sure that those things being good or bad news doesnt depend on DLC existing or not, but the quality of them.
Remake DLC was good and it was training for the ps5 hardware, and no rebirth DLC so they can work on part 3 is also good news.

In reality it only sold around 2.5m with 500k being unsold stock laying around that would then be discounted to bargin bin prices or given away for free, and it still couldn't hit 3m sold, even counting the 200k pc sales it STILL hasn't sold 3m to consumers.
