>>502670098 The writing maybe. There was a part early on where Neve and Bellara were talking that felt very modern, idk how to explain it. Took me out. But mostly Rook. Maybe it's just the culmination of Rook's constant grin, the jokey but safe dialogue, the goofy hands on hip pose. Buffy was a show for teens though and this writing kinda feels like a game for teens.
Thing is the driving force for me watching Buffy was Spike and the hate/hate relationship he has with Buffy that turns into love/hate and eventually love/love. Which half paid off through the last couple of seasons as we saw him grow as a character and then the eventual series finale. The driving force for me in this game is seeing how Solas' plans played out, how he came to be as a character, how the team moved to stop him, and how his story ended. Everything other than that I would've considered bonus. And that less than paid off.
I'd say that the game companions are definitely more likeable than Xander and Willow though. Both Buffy and Rook have some crap friends. If Rook is everybody's therapist who is Rook's?

But she looks like an ugly male with feminine facial features barely visible, and that undermines the conflict of her biology and her feel.
I don't know why did they decide to go with ftm yet made her look like a man. It makes her more like those women who are so ugly they decide to troon out.

The use of vocabulary in Veilguard is terrible. Sometimes the characters sound like protagonists out of a YA novel, and the gap between this game and the previous ones is even more evident when you hear Solas or Morrigan talk, followed by Rook's or a companion's remarks. I'm not saying Origins, DA2 or DAI were literary masterpieces, but there clearly was someone who knew some basic English behind their dialogues and lines. Veilguard is full of people who can't put two basic sentences together.

So how much is Red Lyrium talked about in Veilguard? I just realized that Red Lyrium being spread across southern Thedas during Inquisition could have helped explain why it was devastated so much during Veilguard if the Blight super charged it to spread like it was Tiberium.

I don't doubt the Mourn Watch cares for spirits, but it was heavily implied they were also using them to build their prestige and keep getting funds - it's basically a cult revolving around funerary rites, and it's a shame Bioware also sanitized it, together with many other concepts introduced in past games.

Same in Inquisition, with Bull chafing under some rules, but believing the Qun to be a good thing for many people, his friend Gatt saying the Qunari saved his life and gave him purpose, while Solas sees it as a prison, as chains that stop someone from flourishing as they wish ("A farmer can't hope to be a poet under the Qun" banter). You were given the chance to form your own opinion on the matter.
In Veilguard we have the Antaam (all bad), the Butcher (with whom Rook can't sympathize), Taash's mother (very strict, clearly depicted as a figure Taash should respect, but not follow, because her ideas are outdated), the frail Qunari seamaster who was traumatized by the Antaam, a random Qunari dude in the Shadow Dragons hideout aaaand... that's it, the Qun is bad and they are even following the gods, so go kill some horned guys.

Instead we got Varric and Harding, two people Solas knew very well, hiring Rook, who's already famous in their field, automatically prompting Solas into digging up info about them: he tells you this during a Fade conversation, making the whole "people he doesn't know" premise completely useless.
Lucanis isn't really a god-killer, just a mage one, so even if the Evanuris are powerful mages, it doesn't make sense to put the entire weight of the mission on him, especially when Rook can say the Evanuris aren't "simple mages" like those Neve is used to.
Taash is a random nobody from Rivain with a good knowledge of normal dragons, but she herself says she has no idea how to fight blighted dragons. Also for some reason we went to Rivain instead of Nevarra, a country famous for her strong dragon hunters.
Davrin, Bellara, and Emmrich make a bit more sense, even though Bellara just offers some random mythological info about the gods and fixes an eluvian once; Davrin doesn't really have a solution for the new Blight; Emmrich forges the fake blade at the end, but that's it. Neve and Harding are in the team because they witnessed Varric's death and have a personal reason to fight, but even then, why should Neve care about a dwarf she doesn't know well who just hired her for a job?

There was such a good part in The Dread Wolf Rises where Solas is screaming (in verse) at these magisters about how they will never bind spirits again or he will fucking end them and this magister is smugly thinking "Uh what a hypocrite he clearly bound all these demons and sent them to attack us.
