The only reason Im not going to say "yes 100% they are fine and fixed all issues with diagonals blah blah blah" is because I dont know shit about internals nor have I done any real tests, but in my anecdotal experiences yes their stock for the last year have been good shit, way better than their older controllers (I had a couple of those basic SNES looking ones)
Personally I will one million percent vouch for the 8biddy Ultishart though. I have clocked in hundreds of hours on it by now and its ace. Get one that comes with 2.4ghz, and I think all versions of it work wired USB so you dont have to worry about any weirdness with that

Anon, he has been playing Melee competitively since like 2008. I think anyone who is primarily a Melee/PM/Ultimate player would have a significant learning curve for any non-GC controller, especially the long time oldguard pros like mang0 and m2k

Why are you being so antagonistic for no reason? I didn't say he can't learn it. I don't think that he'd say he can't learn it. He just has a shit ton of experience using the Gamecube controller and personally I think the Gamecube controller has fantastic ergonomics. An extra button isn't everything, and I don't like the way non-GC analogue sticks feel for Smash games.

blast zone shrinkage is definitely needed. floaties live too long and some sub-archetypes of floaties (like multi jumpers or floaters) will always just have great recoveries. Walljumps are ok, its just that you can use X recovery option -> wall jump which refreshes your secondary recovery option -> do whatever the fuck you want -> etc.

The thing is everything that happens offstage being broken made sense in rivals 1 because you couldn't grab the ledge. Now it just makes rivals 2 like smash ultimate, which is the most lame boring thing the game could've done. They need to hard nerf recovering or remove grabbing ledge again.

If Absa releases and I can't carry people into the blast zone with 3 sick toes, that's when I will officially quit the game. What? At what point in the game do you see somebody stop moving and wait there with asdi down ready and piss jugs full?
Even if you're unable to edgeguard the guy your character most likely has something to set up for stage control or you can get iframes by parrying their recovery option or grab ledge and threaten them. And thats only for ledge guarding. Also post rank.

That's not the issue. Zetter can make it back to stage if he has a clear shot even if he's at the blastzone. The problem is you barely even get nudged to disadvantage state when someone hits you *while* you're offstage. Even if mang0 nation gets an epic for the win read offstage it barely does anything for them.

On keyboard how do I down air while off stage without spiking myself
I could slow tilt when I was on controller and usually not kill myself but I haven't the slightest clue for keyboard. On stage I can do it fine for the most part but the second I try off stage I delete myself every time

Your dair is a hitbox twice the size of your character on both side of your both and will with any part of the hitbox even if the perosn is directly above you. That's already too much. Fuck you, you don't get anything more

"Spacies" are notoriously dead off stage, but running off stage for a shine or a bair to secure a kill is also an integral part of playing a spacie. That's what this game lacks. The risk/reward ratios for everything is just so fucked up. There is never any reward because everyone just lives forever. Even approaching has no reward, it's just all risk.

In my experience, she just usually chooses to set up on stage, so I can't really comment on Maypul, but sitting on stage and waiting for the opponent to get back because if you try to edge guard should not be rewarded so much more than going off stage to chase an opponent who is theoretically at a disadvantage (they're off stage and are tasked with recovering)

Yes, because its always better to be at advantage on stage than go for a risky option with shitty hitbox aerials.
Playing both characters and having your oponent offstage does not mean they should die, it means you fucked up your oportunity to kill them or you just wanted to push them off. Each character is so different and has different disadvantages and advantages. If you want a character with good offstage killing potencial, there are characters that are better at it than others.

Correct. I agree with you. They are absolutely at a disadvantage though, and if you chase them it shouldn't be so easy to get reversal'd. When you are off stage, you should be afraid if the opponent begins chasing you and fishing for a kill. Instead, we're in a weird game where somehow the aggressor who is at an advantage is more likely to lose in an off stage scenario, and that really shouldn't be happening, no matter what character it is.

Maybe there can be one character that has a god tier recover that you can't edge guard, but every single character is like that. That's not okay. That's not fun. That's not sick.

one, he repeatedly precariously leaps below the ledge to try to edgeguard. zetter does not have good options for this. forward air requires a sweetspot you probably aren't going to hit down there, neutral air they'll probably fall out of, back air sends them nowhere, and down air can just be wall tech'd. it fails, over and over, and sometimes he even dies for it. but he keeps trying regardless.
two, he outright refuses to grab no matter how much his opponent clearly enjoys shield grabbing his aggressive approaches.

Nothing is stopping you from fishing and threatening an oponent with a spike with both characters, but its a mixup. But if theyre offstage and not dead and youre playing maypul/zetter, it means you fucked up your best kill chance. for example: Zetter stupidly strong cancel into smash or tether nair followup as maypul.
Saying that all characters has godlike recoveries is just fucking wrong. look at both of mentioned character recoveries. Slow, weak, predictable. Without walltechs they would die everytime they go offstage.

The modes have misleading names. If you queue for Casual you will run into any rank. If you queue for Ranked the game won't throw diamonds and masters at you unless you're platinum. Don't worry about the number, just play there and you'll find easier opponents.

Not them but I'm in a similar boat. I'm fine with losing and I'm fine with learning things over time, but unlike most games, there's fuck all feedback for improving in this game. In traditional fighters I could literally just spam and see what works, even against good players some things will work more consistently. Eventually I can make it consistent. In this I don't even get a chance to play. DIng doesn't even feel like it works yet it's supposedly the only thing stopping me from exploding. Half of the time I feel like I succeed it's barely replicable, it might as well have been luck. If I compare this to any other game outside the fighting genre, I can look at guides and quickly implement them even if it takes a while to master them. In this game everyone feels like they've been playing for a year so nothing I learn matters. It's simply not fun. I'd rather play something that feels like it respects my time or at least gives me an environment I can try to play catch-up in.

Not what I asked. I'm not retarded, I can identify almost everything my opponents are doing with the exception of Clairens because I just can't understand her schizo animations half the time. The problem is that there's just no way to fight someone at my skill level to test what actually works and then work my way up, the level 9 bots in this game are worse than the most bottom-tier dogshit I've fought in ranked that somehow even got me a few wins.
I can identify what I'm doing wrong; I've played competitively in a lot of fighting games and general brawlers, it just feels like everything other people do lands while mine doesn't, and eventually it gets to like 160% enemies I just can't finish whereas they always get off a perfect offstage spike combo or some shit on me at 70%.
I just want to know at what point I'm meant to encounter people who actually look like they started the game in the past couple weeks. Because so far I'm doing what people told me and running it down in ranked until my elo is dumpster tier, but reasonable enemies I don't have to bring out Lox for and cheese the fuck out of are nowhere in sight.

Platform fighters are more freeform because of their mechanics, which makes things take a little more time to specifically practice and implement, but still.

you guys don't know how much worse this game used to be during the kickstarter beta LOL. he's a playtester, so no doubt he's contributed directly to the balance just by being involved with the team, but he also protests the strength of certain characters in the best way possible, by going to tournaments and showing just how stupidly broken they really are.
>solved ranno's reaction tech chase completely and farmed the ladder only using grab, which led to the grab rtc lockout
>won multiple tournaments with wrastor dominantly and is the reason for his double jumps getting nerfed, jab getting gutted, and slipstream only activating on hit
>got maypul's rewraps nerfed and is the reason lily wraps are an execution check now

i do think mang0 is right about some things but recovering really is not one of them. if you're seriously complaining about spikes being ineffective because of WALL TECHING you are just choosing not to engage with the game or learn your character's offstage options i'm sorry.
MOST characters in this game are capable of initiating deep edgeguards that extend past the range where a recovery to the wall doesn't matter. it's not surprising to me that players don't immediately know how to capitalize on something so foreign to smash, but this is the only point where i'm genuinely telling you to try harder.

Recovery options in rivals 1 makes sense because there are no ledges to grab. Those same recovery options but on a game with ledges turns the game into smash ultimate. It's not bad because there's something wrong with it. It's bad because it's boring and lame. The game needs to not be boring to survive. You should not be able to recover for free in this game. Being offstage is supposed to be a disadvantage stage and it isn't in this game. Can I just "git gud"? Sure. Will it be fun? No. Mang0 is pushing for this game to be more fun and you should be on his side on his recovering complaint. You'll 100% thank him if his demands are met in the long run.

This kind of highlights one of the major flaws with the dev's approach to game design. Instead of reworking grabs and/or the character, they slap an unintuitive band-aid on it and move on to the next thing.

LMAO, you know, maybe being a zetter player is why mang0 and a lot of others feel edgeguarding is impossible. he shares a lot of dna with traditional spacies, so it makes sense that you would aim for the optimal edgeguarding box FOR spacies, which is relatively close to the edge, and that's why wall teching can be so problematic.
he definitely has options though, dropping from ledge and shining is pretty effective in this game because you can jump cancel spike out of it, but you can also drop from ledge to send out invincible bairs that combo into walljump sweetspot fair.
his deeper options involve down b predominantly, because he can jump out of the move after traveling a certain distance. you can also abuse his great aerial mobility to make charged shine combos lethal from relatively far offstage.

i just don't think "characters recovering for free" is a judgement call that week 3 rivals first timers should be making. it's true that every character has a strong recovery, but edgeguarding definitely exists, and every character has strong options that you don't know how to utilize yet.
it's easier to learn how to recover than it is to learn how to edgeguard, and you aren't punished for having subpar execution like in melee, so i can understand why people think this. i just think it serves no one to tunnelvision on something when your only frame of reference is an entirely different set of mechanics.

Correct. Any good platform fighter will always be described as "Melee, but with easier tech and different characters, and possibly more balanced". If your game cannot be described this way, it's not a good platform fighter.

Currently, Rivals 2 can be described as "Ultimate, but with PM tech"

This thread, even from the demo week, has always been complaining about the same things that mang0 complains about, because we're all playing the same game, and ever Melee player is able to distinguish exactly why this game doesn't feel cool or sick like Melee does. idk, i think devs would like to keep the general strength of mechanics relatively high while limiting abuse.
a grab rtc lockout is completely fine to me, and even then they DID rework grabs AND the character on top of that. you've probably never seen or heard about the grab rtc lockout for that very reason.
pummel and spummel 50/50 is just dan's killer instinct brain at play. i doubt it was even based on anything besides being an interesting mechanic and removing the need for any mashing in the game, which is an accessibility thing.

Im an all around smash player so I'm used to not EVERY move being very good but... it would be nice if fleet's downB was good for anything besides a super unsafe last chance recovery option. kind of an awkward shot angle, and very laggy so I dont find it useful for ledge traps and I dont see top players using it that way either

You should probably just watch or read some basic movement guide because you really sound lost. You should just focus on dashdancing (dashing side to side without initiating the turn around animation, you can use this in place or hold to one direction more than the other to move to your opp) and WDing (literally just hold left or right, jump, airdodge). at least wavedash on and off platforms. Once you get the hang of it you'll start seeing the ways they can be applied into your matches.
