Theory: outside of CE the litmus test for whether a Halo game plays "like Halo" is if you can port Sanctuary into it and it plays well
If it doesn't you messed up something fundamental, because to me that map is the most quintessential 4 v 4 Halo experience there is

Match 2: Avenger on Bazaar
Match 3: Bandit EVO on Catalyst
Match 4: AR on Aquarius
No Secondary weapon starts
Bot Difficulty: Spartan (3 bots on my team, 4 bots on other team)
Team Slayer

_Match 1 and 2 had no issues, and we won by 15-20 points. The BR is just really easy to use, especially with the slower speed setting, but it's not OP, felt pretty good and didn't overpower the other weapons. You still wanted to pick stuff up like the plasma pistol and commando. Even the Ravager felt good to use with the slower movement speed.
_The Avenger in Match 2 reminded me of Bungie's Halos where you want to close the distance with the AR or SMG. It felt really good to use up close and pair it with a BR or Sidekick you can pick up on the map for longer distance fights. The Needler and Sentinel Beam are a step up from the Avenger so it feels right as a starting weapon that you might want to upgrade later.
_Match 3...I can't aim for shit, so absolutely suck with the Bandit EVO and getting descoped messed me up so I couldn't do much without closing the gap. The AI can also laser you the moment they peak out from a corner no matter where you are coming from, and I have really bad awareness on this map, couldn't tell where I was getting shot from and couldn't really see the enemy since they're all different colors and I turned off outlines. We ended up losing by 3 kills lol. Reminds me of Halo Reach BTB where you just get crossmapped from every direction the moment you stick your head out. It's not fun, but it's pretty realistic for DMR starts. This is how it ends up playing out in a real live match against humans anyway so I guess it's working as intended.
_Match 4 was pretty close, was having the same issue not knowing where the enemy team was at so I kept getting pinged from different directions/elevations. But it wasn't as confusing as on Catalyst, and we pulled ahead right at the end

And here's my analysis:
_Don't give Spartan difficulty Bots Bandit starts on big maps. They have aimbot with it. It's more reasonable on smaller maps like Bazaar where their accuracy more accurately reflects a good human player. AR starts on big maps also reveal the aimbot of Spartan difficulty with how they manage to land all those rounds at full auto. You can lower the difficulty to ODST level to reduce the problem but they might be too easy compared to a human player and they're a little less aware of their surroundings. But otherwise I don't notice much difference in terms of headshot weapons being OP. They're not more OP than the regular modes.
_The Bandit will always be good in the hands of a player that can aim, so the slower movement and inertia helps worse players close the gap slightly, but it doesn't make good players more OP since it still takes the same amount of shots to kill and they were already getting their shots in anyway. It makes the weapon more consistent for everyone else I would guess. I sucked at it so I still suck at it even with slower movespeed, nothing really changed. You just don't have to deal with the extra difficulty of faster moving targets and it makes me think twice about being too recklless and making bad decisions like runing out in the open without backup. But I think that's just an issue with the DMR/Bandit discouraging rushdowns. I don't like it as a starting weapon, I think it's too hard to use. I would prefer the BR or the Avenger as a starter. They're just good enough to defend yourself with on spawn, but you still want to pick up a second gun and maybe a replacement.
_And all those other guns we used to ignore like the Hydra and Ravager in 4v4 are way more useful on slower targets that don't zigzag like crazy. The slower movespeed and single weapon starts seem to encourage more use of the sandbox. I was always looking for weapon racks while playing this mode.

Last bit of analysis. Actually more of an observation. All the built-in 343 maps seem to work fine with these settings. Not much realyl changed aside from moving a little slower. The maps still play the same. There's no sprint, but the increased jump height and reduced gravity make it easy to navigate. even when trying to jump to different ledges or platforms. You might bump into the ceiling sometimes but it doesn't stop your forward momentum from what I can tell, and I didn't notice any difficulty getting to where I needed to go vertically. It's like the higher jump balances out the reduced horizontal speed so it's about the same, maybe faster in some cases since you can skip the clamber.

I'm starting to think Forge might have been a huge misstep for the Halo series.
It's an awesome tool, but it's seriously degraded Halo matchmaking. Maybe it was Reach including Forge maps in matchmaking where the problem started. Should have just stayed fileshare and custom games.

Multiplayer maps used to be these really tight showcases of level design and art direction, where dev teams could really polish a small space to play well and LOOK great.
Some of the art direction, especially for maps in Halo 3 rival anything in the campaigns.
Halo Reach DLC maps, particularly from the Noble Map Pack and the Anniversary pack straight up do look better than most of the campaign, imo, due to Reach's weird muted campaign art direction - and they end up being some of the best looking maps in the entire series *to this day*

On the other hand, with Forged maps, generally the best you can hope for is a fun map layout; but I've never played a Forge map where the fun of its design fully outweighed its visual cancer.

Honestly, there's something to be said for having a limited selection of maps handed to you from on high, instead of this "fukken uhhh it's whatever the community builds/wants" mindset.
I think Halo 1-3 built up a lot of memories for people because of maps like Lockout, Beaver Creek, Snowbound, The Pit, Guardian, etc. the default maps, being the only maps people could play in Multiplayer - barring fileshare in Halo 3 or Halo Custom Edition.

This has nothing to do with how the maps play. Purely assessment of visual design.

>10. Danger Canyon - Halo CE
Was a toss up between this and Timberland, Timberland is a pretty peak Halo map in terms of aesthetics, but I think Danger Canyon wins out for me for having a bit more visual clarity. Timberland is kind of Grey and muted in its colour palette, where Danger Canyon uses brighter daylighting and there are less trees creating visual noise. In the end it's a peak Halo CE alpine map.
>9. Anchor 9 - Halo Reach
Great skybox. Great visual clarity. Great Ron Cobb style futuristic UNSC interiors. Biggest problem is the Halo Reach film grain, and the lighting is a bit bloomy. Without those problems it might go up 1 in the ranking.
>8. Cold Storage - Halo 3
Halo 3 is the peak of Forerunner architecture design imo. Especially for the interiors. Rich with interesting detail and mystery.
>7. Guardian - Halo 3
Pretty unmatched in terms of spooky vibe. Backwash from Halo 2 is the closest to matching it, but something about Guardian being set so high up in such a dark forest makes it really mysterious. Unusual to be so high up and still have a canopy so thick that there's barely any light.
>6. Beaver Creek - Halo 2
Fantastic contrasts. The orange canyon vs. the deep clear blue sky, the appearance of an arid climate vs. the creek, the sand vs. the foilage, red vs. blue, Forerunner structures vs. the natural environment: there's so much going on visually compacted into such a small space. As well, H2 Beaver Creek wins out over a lot of more modern maps for its crisp readability and visual clarity, thanks to the Halo 2 engine.

>5. Sidewinder - Halo CE
Something wonderfully desolate about the icy canyon, snow and ice fields, contrasted with the massive dark blue skybox. Seems like the air would be extremely cold and clean to breathe. Another clean design.
>4. Isolation - Halo 3
Similar to Beaver Creek, you get a ton of contrasting elements, but you also get Halo 3's visual polish on the alien structures, and the incredible skybox with the Milkyway in view.
>3. Snowbound - Halo 3
Crisp visual clarity, snow, beautiful skybox, and some of the best Covenant structures in Halo multiplayer for contrast. Cool Forerunner chasm beneath glass in the cave floor.
>2. Tempest - Halo Reach
Was a toss up between this and Valhalla, but Tempest ultimately wins out. Halo 3 has some motion blur at the screen edges, and the snow capped mountain/beach/alpine enviro combo of Valhalla isn't the most believable. Tempest on the other hand, does everything Valhalla does visually, without the flaws. Some of the best contrast of Forerunner structures and natural environment in the entire series. Incredible skybox, on par with some of the most imaginative stuff in Halo 2's campaign. It's a shame we didn't get more Bungie-designed Forerunner structures in the Reach engine. Tempest is really beautiful.
>1. Relic - Halo 2
The best looking Halo map. Halo 2 is a rough looking game. A lot of its maps are some of the best to play, but have some of the weaker aesthetics: possibly due to their failure to implement stenciled shadow effects.
However, Relic uses Halo 2's engine perfectly. It's crisp. The vast ocean and skybox make the map feel immense. The colour palette is soft and pastel, very easy on the eyes, despite depicting only raw elemental aspects.
There's something weirdly melancholic about the map. Its description says something about the structure being a Forerunner memorial warriors, but who would ever take the time to visit such a lonely island in such an empty sea?
Almost a painfully beautiful map.

I like the look of Complex. The lighting effects are a bit harsh, some of the texture work is questionable (the ground texture on the hill with the little rivulets looks odd to me), but I like the colour palette, the UNSC architecture is kind of cool, I like the alien trees, and the skybox is nice.
Skyline is also quite a nice map, mainly due to its excellent skybox. The map itself doesn't look fantastic, but the skybox is really top notch.

Didn't bother to play Halo 5, but from what I gather, I think I like the look of Plaza and Fathom/Riptide, esp. for being visually inventive.

Infinite I particularly like Recharge, Forest, and Forbidden. The latter two of which I think might be some of 343i's best work.

Ironically enough, the move to UE5 is a step in that direction because it's easier to mod. Too bad neo343 is 100,00,000% guaranteed to screw up by using deferred rendering and it will require you to run at 4k to get 1080p forward rendered clarity. It's way more of a drain on hardware if you care about a clean image.

No. This is non-negotiable. If sprint is in, it screws up map design and the weapon sandbox. Even the lack of strafe inertia in infinite is due to map and weapon sandbox design. Since 5, AI enemies can snipe you with basically every weapon, which pushes even PvE combat to longer ranges, destroying the combat triangle. Like anyone with a brain has been saying since Reach: Go back and use 3 as a foundation for everything, while taking hints from the other games that don't overstep how 3 plays. Even something as basic as making weapons like the BR slightly less prolific throughout the campaign so it's more of a weapon you have to use wisely instead of a weapon you default to, making it feel more different from PvP. ODST makes the Carbine a more rare weapon and the BR doesn't exist, so you can't just use one weapon for everything. It's better than 2 and 3 in this regard. Then, in other levels, make it so you can use a power weapon a lot if you manage ammo properly. CE does this throughout some levels, like The Truth and Reconciliation and Assault on the Control Room. Both of these levels have Sniper ammo throughout them. AotCR has rocket ammo throughout the level as well. The Storm in Halo 3 also has 4 Sniper Rifles spread throughout the level.

It's incredible how much thought and care was put into the Bungie games compared to the 343 games. And I don't think it's possible to get that again because contractors don't have the time or pay to worry about details. I know that at least this much is not exclusively a 343 issue, it's a corporate bureaucracy thing. Microsoft is so incredibly retarded because they force business practices that are horrible for creating art.

This is one of the few times Halo Reach improved Halo. For the Flood to come back, there needs to be a complete overhaul of their behavior. They're simply not as fun or interesting to fight as the Covenant in their current form.

The infection forms chould be given silly voices like the Grunts and speak English and be sassy or cowardly. The combat forms could be given classical zombie dialogue ("Braaaiiinns", or "Lord Saddler..." or "¡Mierda!", etc.). Also fix the special Elite Flood's shields. The flood carriers could be very friendly and approach you and just want to be friends but then accidentally blow up when you get near. The Tank Pureforms could be conceited and talk down to you in a posh accent, and when they transform into a turret they might act shy or embarrassed like a moe anime girl.

The Flood are no longer scary or novel in current year, so you can't approach them from a horror angle. 'Scary' areas in games don't age well because their novelty is quickly worn off after the first playthrough. Horror works when you know very little about the monster. But once the monster is revealed it's no longer an effective scare tactic. This is partially why the Flood levels are such a slog to play nowadays. The devs always treated them as if you were supposed to be afraid of them and it slowed down the pacing.

So rather from a horror angle, approach them from a gameplay angle instead. Think about how the Flood can behave in ways that the Covenant doesn't. Make them fun to fight and not just mindless mobs that rush you down and overwhelm you. Create a grenade or equipment that you toss out and it converts some Flood to your side by cutting off the Gravemind's control. Make it so that the Flood drive more erratically while in a vehicle so it's not just like a normal human or Elite driving it. Make their firing patterns/aim more chaotic and accidentally shoot each other.

I hid behind the destroyed Frigates/debris and took shots from there behind cover. When you get to the corvette section, take cover right next to the engines and do the same thing. Gonna be a slog but you'll get through it eventually.

I like the Halo 3 terminals where it's more like I'm looking through the logs of a long gone alien race. I don't really care much for the new ones with the cutscenes. The text/log versions feel more mysterious and sometimes cryptic and you use your imagination to fill in the gaps. The cutscene versions give away way too much information.

Aside from the poor lighting/shadowing system that makes it looks like stuff is floating and not making contact with each other, there's no inertia. You go from zero to max speed in an instant, but now you can really see it in third person because of the animations. Some Halo youtubers that played the early access demo have taken notice of this and have pointed it out, so maybe they can get 343 to fix it. You can actually fix it yourself in a custom games match. The settings are accessible to everyone, so it shouldn't be too hard for 343 even if they're feeling extra lazy or want to play the whole red tape game to get it through their approval system. The work is already completely done and the UI for it is implemented into the game , they don't even have to polish up anything. They literally just have to change the following 2 settings to anything less than the default:
>FORWARD/BACK ACCELERATION SCALAR
>STRAFE ACCELERATION SCALAR
They can set both of these to 50% and call it a day. There's no extra work involved. But at the earliest it will still take about 1 months for approval, 1 month for implementation, and another month for QA testing, and maybe they'll hold onto it for the Halo 3 Anniversary update. (No Halo 3 Aninversary, just some Halo 3 Forge maps in Infinite and a Halo 3 armor shop update).

I’m disappointed I didn’t own Halo 3 when it first came out. I played it with friends and had some Halo parties but i was not able to own it and play it online. I really missed out on the initial hype of the game when it was massive and everyone played it. My parents did not buy me M rated games. I like playing through Halo on legendary with several skulls turned out. I grew playing Halo 2 and didn't play the others until I got the MCC a couple years ago. I think Halo 2 on legendary is fine with the exception of the Regret Fight and the beginning and prison section of Gravemind.

I bring that up because I believe that Halo: CE is probably one of the hardest Halos and it's not even close. I was trying to play Truth and Reconciliation and it's just waves of enemies all the time with few checkpoints.

Halo: CE is also my least favorite Halo. Three maps are just rehashes of three different maps and there's a lot of repetition. Like the entirety of The Library and the halls of T&R.

What you do on Truth and Reconciliation is you use grenades to blast that covenant turret back into the entrance area and you get into the turret once it’s back there. That way all the waves of enemies will funnel themselves into the cramped canyon hallway and you can just blast them with the turret. I did this because I literally could not beat them legitimately on legendary.

I know there's that grenade skip to get to the top floor but I like playing through as the game intended. Once I rescued Keyes and he kept running to the front I gave up. I get that there are difficulty spikes but I don't understand how anyone can think CE is anywhere near the most difficult Legendary, let alone on the level of the bullshit factory that is H2 Legendary. Chief takes more bullets to kill, the plasma weapons are the most common ones in the game and are very powerful, the CE pistol and shotgun exist as by far the most powerful "main weapons" in the series, and CE's 4x frags are by far the strongest in the series too.
In T&R you get a 64 bullet sniper to work with (and ammo pickups littered across the level once you drop below 24 ammo) and every non-Gold elite dies in two headshots at worst. Unless you're using the sniper on grunts it immediately unbalances every encounter in your favor except for the boarding battle. The boarding battle is best finished by liberal grenade usage/prediction for the mobs, AR usage for the camo elites, and sniper usage for the majors/golds.
Sure, you have less options to cheese encounters as the Elites are actually agile and the plasma pistol overcharge tracking is nerfed, but you also have less incentive to do so because of the sheer amount of utility you always have. As far as level design goes the Gondolas in H2 alone are more than a match for CE's wave sections. Rocket Flood are terrible but they're nowhere near as bad as infinite range hitscan beam rifle jackals in H3 let alone the absurdity they were in H2.
In general CE rewards playing aggro more than any other Bungie game (except maybe H3). The game is at its hardest when you lock yourself into some terrible positioning and enemies exploit cover against you. A good example is the first defense section in the second mission. If you allow the Spirits to drop all their enemies you're in for a tough, protracted battle. But if you run right up to the dropships and kill/nearly kill the elites with plasma nades right as they drop to the floor, you're given opportunity to press the advantage.

The idea of hooking up a bunch of consoles together with friends and have a big battle in an open battlefield sounded so cool and I missed out on it. But at the time I was kind of a hater, siding with Nintendo's Game Cube. I was really looking forward to Turok Evolution because of how big they were hyping it up in magazines and stuff and that it would completely blow away Halo. Well...
...Anyway, fast forward to the Halo 2 E3 demo and that's when I started getting hype. And then I got an Xbox and got to play CE. The upside to your situation is that you have access to so many mods and you can just install them with a click of the button. You also have every game available and can play them whenever you want. There are custom servers. There weren't customs servers back then. You had to meet online or already have friends to play with. You also have big team heavies playlist which I wish we had back then. I think they introduced them later on console but I had already moved on by then.

I think they're just not used to CE's run and gun style. It's more open and the game wants you to be aggressive, but Halo 2 trains you to play way too safely. So when you're forced into an unexpected situation in CE like being surrounded or without cover maybe you might panic/hesitate and try to look for cover when in fact you should be charging them head on. Remember that Elites in CE have much better movement. 2 Elites are so slow and predictable and they don't charge after you or try to make themselves a harder target to hit. What makes Elites so strong in 2 is simply that Chief is so weak. Everything about 2's combat is slow. It might be the slowest Halo (campaign-wise). CE's movement and pacing is just way faster.

The thing I remember hearing is that original pre-XBL Xbox had something called Xbox Connect. A local network that allowed any Xbox plugged into a local ethernet cable to connect together. So for example college people could play together in different rooms.
I'm not even sure if that was actually real or not but the idea of it sounds comfy.

Also, you know where the Covies land at the lift. Use grenades, which are either a squad wiping nuke or a squad wiping EMP.

This. In 2 they're so nerfed to the point of almost being useless outside of the shield damage so maybe if you played 2 first you would overlook them in CE. But in CE you can actually use the plasma rifle as a primary weapon. And the plasma pistol is almost as OP as the magnum for campaign. And they both have such good range too. Their primary fire just rips through shields and does plenty damage against flesh.

For aesthetics, if I were to do honorable mentions, or actually rank every map, Damnation would be high tier.
Biggest reason Damnation didn't make my top 10: it's supposed to be a Covenant map, but like with Chill Out it's barely distinguishable from a Forerunner map like Hang 'em High or Derelict.
I guess in general most Halo CE maps are too visually abstract for me to consider them top 10 map asethetics material.

The CE Anniversary playlist for Halo Reach is quite fun.
All at once it makes me nostalgic for Halo CE, the last years of fun I got out of Reach, and the last time I was still really optimistic for Halo in general: still excited for the future.
Please consider making it permanently accessible.
Additionally, please consider removing the DMR on Beaver Creek and replacing it with a Magnum, officially fixing the Active Camo spawn on the Hang 'em High remake where the powerup clips through the floor (weird quirk of Active Camo spawning - I have to account for this in forge as well), and adding some additional maps to the rotation.
I'd suggest Anchor 9, Tempest (or Typhoon), and Powerhouse, edited to have Halo CE weapons and vehicles only. Where appropriate (like on Tempest) maybe only have objective game modes (KotH and CTF) to account for the larger map size. Tempest is very "Halo" to me.

People could block swords with any melee attacks.
No bleedthrough meant that 10% shield could tank a sniper round and leave health untouched. This was controversial.
Bloom on precision weapons was too much to deal with for a loud contingent of players.

It's mostly to reduce RNG and promote more player skill. So, guns that require more manual hard aiming you'll see more of. Guns that are more newbie friendly and full-auto with strong aim assist tend to not show up. So yeah, it ends up being a more boring version of the game. So, I've been tossing an idea around in my head for a while.
Big problem I'm facing with custom game gametypes: until the lobby fills up with at least 2v2, any combination of 1v1 or 1v2 is likely to cause joiners to quit. It's a huge hurdle to getting a session going. You have to reach that 2v2 mark for people to stick around.

As a host, I think I'm *just* tryhard enough to drive away people looking for extremely casual, mini-game, or social stuff. I don't consider myself anywhere near a competitive play level, but I still drive away people because I'm like ... actually playing slayer, which I guess some custom game joiners don't expect? On the other hand, I sometimes get players who are at a skill level well above me, who quit out of boredom: usually because it's just me or me and some other average player in the lobby, and the higher skill level players stomp for a few rounds then leave.

Tried to mitigate the skill-gap issue with King of the Hill, and that actually does work well, lower skill players can get the upper hand in a match by playing the objective: but it creates a new problem where at a certain point if a team gets a huge lead on the other team re: time on the clock, it's impossible for the losing team to catch up in a low player count scenario. Then the losers want to quit again.

Anyway the idea is this: I guess I'd call it something like "Training Weights Slayer"
Has anything like this been done before?
The idea would be that the leading player (in FFA) or the leading team would be hit with handicaps: lower damage output and damage resistance.
Ideally it'd create a risk/reward feeling for the leader(s), you have to play better if you score high, because a high score gives you handicaps, but would also make worse/more casual players feel like they have to sweat less.

Has this been done? Is it a good idea?

This only applies to spartan IIs. IIIs were suicide units designed to be thrown into meat grinders the UNSC couldn't afford to waste time on, and IVs are just regular people augmented to be closer to IIIs but are still a far cry from IIIs, much less IIs.

If I decide to play it safe, something along the lines of Rubberband Slayer would probably be best. I'll probably switch to that if I end up needing to.
But I'm getting attached to "Communist FFA" because both sessions I ran prompted tons of people to join and prompted THE MOST chat use/trash talking I've had in any of my gametypes.

Thanks to the joiners for the last Commie FFA session. That was pretty fun!
Open to suggestions re: balancing.
Also had some new ideas for a version of Halo 3 Escalation Slayer which would play very similarly. Probably will call it "De-Escalation Slayer" I'm kinda eager to get away from Reach eventually just for some variety, so will probably work on that next.

No, but the closest I can get to something like that is Easy difficulty, which is what I play. If you play on Normal or higher, enemies become too tanky and your allies go down really quick and then you spend the rest of the wave running away, so I think those difficulties are balanced for co-op with human players. Easy feels like Normal with the regular enemies and feels like Heroic when the bosses show up.

these guys kind of arent great at halo 2. are these old MLGs but like the ones who would sit on the bench incase one of the good players had a bad hotpocket or something. The Carbine in H3 sucks. It's less accurate than the BR while either matching or being slower than the BR's TTK and having less kills per mag. For something that is a map pickup, there's no reason to ever go for it when you have a BR already.

I can understand their thought process to an extent, even if I disagree with it. It's one of the basic Invasion guns, meant to mimic the AR. It's worse stats are meant to balance out with Elites being stronger than Spartans. But it's a dumb decision when the AR was nerfed going into Reach and Spartans get a headshot weapon by default.

Round one guns for elites in Invasion were absolute shit. Smart players quickly grabbed the human guns as quickly as they could or grabbed Needle Rifles.

The Plasma Launcher is still pretty good, but it's not as dominating as it used to be. Complete garbage against fast vehicles though. Still fun to use against infantry. People NEVER expect you to use that gun on them.

You can't carry vinyl around with you, so it's not very versatile.

Had a sad sack session earlier where one nice anon joined and stayed for a few matches but no other anons or randoms stuck around. But was reminded in that session about the Plasma Rifle. The whole Elites-Only Bangheilios gametype actually started around the idea of simulating being an Elite in Halo 1.
The Elites in Halo 1 only use Plasma Rifles, Needlers, Energy Swords, and I think maybe some of the spec-ops Elites on The Maw use Fuel Rods. So this became the Conk Rifle, Energy Sword, Plasma Rifle, Needler, and Plasma Pistol sandbox: plus the Active Camo powerup and Plasma Grenades. Stuff the Elites use.
And this idea was mainly inspired by a conclusion I reached several months ago about the Plasma Rifle being the most fun gun in Halo series. Bangheilios is not actually about sangheili furshit at all I just lean into that for the shitpost. There's a GDC talk by Bungie's sandbox designer for the original Halo game, where he talks about the Plasma Rifle in fine detail, and how it's one of the most finely tuned weapons in the series. "Fun to shoot and fun to be shot with" - which is crucial for both single player and multiplayer design.

This recent Commie FFA gametype has also been fun, when I've gotten full lobbies.
Been playing a lot of Halo 2.
The conclusion I'm getting to is instead of seeing Halo's base gameplay as the casual Smash-Bros style party game I think it is, maybe I should lean into competitive and try to bring some of my philosophy into a fully competitive gametype.
Maybe that's just what people want.

Of course the casual custom games are going to be very casual, but I guess I personally see Halo's base gameplay (especially Halo CE's base gameplay) as casual itself. It's not meant to be played competitively imo. It CAN be, and more power to people who play it competitively, but I personally believe, and I think everyone kind of implicitly agrees, that 343/Halo Studios chasing after competitive gameplay and the competitive scene was the wrong direction for Halo.

Actually a lot of my motivation for creating these gametypes comes from a bit of Masahiro Sakurai philosophy about intentionally frustrating competitive play. He wanted Smash Bros to be something anyone could pick up and play and have a fun time with, and the competitive scene that developed around Melee was against how he saw the game: as a party game children play on the couch with their buddies. He's had to walk back some of his intentions due to fan demands, but I remember reading about how with Brawl he intentionally made design choices to frustrate the competitive scene.

So with these gametypes, not to sound pretentious or anything, but I'm trying to find the soul of Halo.

My gametypes are too sweaty for the people who play desert bus or castle wars or social servers or whatever else, but they aren't competitive enough for a competitive player.
But I guess I feel like the real fun I've had with Halo, on its own terms, sits somewhere in the middle of those extremes. My memories of 4v4 Blood Gulch at lan parties, sitting on a couch with friends, cheering when we got the flag into the getaway warthog ... it's so hard to get anything like that experience in Halo as it's played today. It's either way to sweaty or way to casual.
I am hoping people will eventually grok what I'm trying to do.

It's simple really. Anything where guns, grenades AND melee are effective. Those are the pillars of Halo. Also remember that Halo has always been a party game at its core.

Plus the tripod leaves out vehicles, which I also consider to be integral to Halo's identity.
And then there's all the more ephemeral art and story context that makes up Halo's identity.

All of the problems of precision weapons would disappear if we just nerfed magazine size across the board, players should be punished for missing shots with precision weapons. It was never the damage these made the pistol in CE OP, it was the absurdly forgiving amount of spare ammo it had that could theoretically kill a whole team without reloading.
